[RBW] Bike stereo

2013-02-10 Thread Benedikt
I've been enjoying music from my smart phone in my jacket pocket going to
and from work. Loud enough I can hear it (when there's no traffic) yet
still allowing me to hear what's around. I decided to step it up just a
little.

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose brake lever question

2013-02-10 Thread BSWP
I had these out for a 20 mile ride to the Bay and back through the
foothills today. It's pretty nice having eight inches of straight taped bar
(I cut off an inch), with the brakes set close into the center. I can grab
out wide, anywhere along the tape, and have several good positions with
hands resting on the brake clamps, and I also found a restful spot for my
hands at the very center of the bars. Glad to see RBW is bringing these
back.

I suppose anyone can make a drawing of whatever bike/car/motorcycle they're

without permission on the internet. The text on that page states the work
was done "for Rivendell Bicycle Works", which implies that the images are
authorized. Not cool. Also..they're lame.

[RBW] Re: Riv wheel set....

Sounds great, Charlie.

I have two sets of rich built wheels for my Hillborne. One that uses
cassettes and one that is built on Rivy freewheel hubs and dyad rims. I
really love the freewheel one. Rode that set all last year and never had
one issue with them, even use the wheels as trainer duty this winter. They
are just great wheels and haven't needed a truing or anything.

I have to check on using a generator hub for my Roadeo. I do believe that
may be the route I go with the wheelset.

[RBW] Tandem Sizes

Front: 54 cm C-T
Rear: 51 cm C-T

Note that I usually ride a 56cm frame, but this tandem fits me just fine. It

[RBW] FS: Santana Tandem

2013-02-10 Thread Eric Norris
There's been some talk on the list about a Rivendell tandem, so ... Not a Riv
tandem, but the next best thing. We are selling our Santana Arriva tandem--a
fantastic machine handmade at the original Santana workshop in Claremont, CA.
Fillet-brazed by hand (not Tig-welded as they are now). Purchased from
Santana's home shop, the (now closed) Bud's Bike Shop in Claremont.

The photos speak for themselves:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/campyonlyguy/sets/72157632736391821/show/

A few details:

Fillet-brazed frame of custom-drawn Columbus tubing
Investment-cast cro-moly fork crown
Special Santana bottom brackets with eccentric front
Campagnolo 7-speed Record Ergo levers
Sugino cranksets
Arai drum brake, actuated by Suntour bar-end shifter (for use as a drag brake
on long downhills)
Handbuilt 48-spoke wheels
Sealed bearing, high-flange hubs
Includes seats, rack, and rack trunk
Pedals not included
Original Santana-branded stoker bars included, if you want them

This tandem has been used, but very little. The last time it was on the road
before taking these photos was about three years ago :-( It needs a home where
it will be ridden and appreciated.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

Asking $1,000, and local pickup in the Sacramento, CA, area is preferred
(although I will be happy to pack and ship it for the cost of shipping).

[RBW] Re: "Aero" cable routing for bar end shifters

2013-02-10 Thread Phil Bickford
I can't remember being entirely satisfied with that setup myself. Two
things you could try:

-cross the front and rear cables before the downtube cable stops to
eliminate that last tight bend coming off the bars.
-use campy cables - they are slightly skinnier than standard shimano
width.

neither of which is going to be magical. Your asking for an un-natural
act, after all.

Ouch. All of your customers that I have met have been really nice folks, so
this sort of thing is shocking.

Riv has, for better and worse, an outsized presence in the virtual world of the
Internet, bike magazines and trade journals. Back when I used to read bike
mags and newsgroups and bike web sites a lot (my goal is to read about bikes
less and ride more, although I have only accomplished the former much to my
waistline's chagrin), I would see Grant quoted or references 100 times as often
as the CEOs of Trek or Cannondale. Grant has a particular set of viewpoints
and ways of running his business and those create some resonance that more
"normal" bike manufacturers don't get. Trek and Cannondale etc. get product
buzz; Grant gets "velosophy buzz." And that may make him (and by extension
Rivendell) more of a target for resentment and getting smeared on the interwebs.

[RBW] Re: More Riv Posters?!?!?

2013-02-10 Thread grant
A bit of a surprise. Dan Blackman is a talented artist, and I found out
about him when I toured the Pointer Brand factory in Bristol, VA--when i
was on my book tour. I liked the work he did for pointer, contacted him and
talked about posters. He and Dave were talking, and I/Dave too THOUGHT we
were clear about what we wanted---INFO-graphical posters that told the
story of the bike via symbols, graphs, pie charts.

We were to pay him about $4,500---I think that was the figure--for six or
seven posters, with a KILL FEE of $1,000. A kill fee is what the artist
gets if the project goes south for any reason. In our case, the posters
were taking a direction we didn't expect and that didn't seem to be
info-graphical. So we nipped it in the bud, so we thought, paid the kill
fee, and that should have been it.

It it is suprising to find that the posters continued. I don't know what to
think about it, really. It never occured to us that it would go this way. I
like to control any-and-all impressions of Rivendell, because there's a
certain style that I want associated with us and the bikes and all. But I
don't think we can stop anybody from doing that, legally---and if we could,
I wouldn't bother or go to the expense. It would be so unpleasant, almost
mean, and we have our hands full already. Plus it's not like Dan Blackman
is the enemy, either. I wish he hadn't, but he did, and I hope he makes a
little money off them and then they sort of fade away.

Re: [RBW] Re: RivReviews

2013-02-10 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I've been on the receiving end of negative commentary resulting from a
combination of unreasonable expectations and apparent miscommunication. A
recent one was a minor dispute/misunderstanding over a Brooks B67 that went
missing (my fault). I resolved it by offering the customer either a
replacement, refund, or store credit. He said store credit was ok, and left.
The whole transaction seemed friendly and positive - heck, we'd known each
other for years and I considered him a friend. Then a week later, on a public
forum, I see in bold letters JIM THILL IS A THIEF followed by a tale that was a
twisted version of the way I recalled it, culminating in my theft of his
saddle. I tried to communicate my desire to make good several times, but got
vitriol or silence in return. It's possible that Riv tried to appease this guy,
too, but he wasn't hearing it.

Re: [RBW] Re: RivReviews

2013-02-10 Thread RJM
Riv always answers the phone for me and I got my Sam Hillborne frame within
a week or two. I don't know how long the Roadeo will take, they said it
will be a couple of months so we will see. The wait on that frame isn't
bothering me that much at all. Every email is answered quickly, like within
that day, too.

I understand if something falls through the cracks too. I mean, if they are
selling 500 bikes a year among who knows how many other packages, I can
understand something getting forgotten. I hope if the dude is for real,
that a reasonable solution is found. I am suspicious though, based on the
severity of the review, which really isn't a review on the Hilsen anyway.

I try to make as many reviews that I can and judge the products fairly.
Haven't made one on the Hillborne yet, but I should and have been meaning
to write one up.

The Sam Hillborne is the only one that's easily legible, and does look
good. It has a nice blend of bold font use, and abstract planetary graphic
elements placed to side, leaving enough room for the text to show through.
The others are hurt by letting the art block out the text.

The dude may well be semi-justified. After nearly 10 years as a happy Riv
customer, I'd be lying if I said that delays on frame orders are uncommon. Most
of us realize that "it happens" and give Riv the benefit of the doubt. I'd also
be lying if I said that Riv was batting 1.000 with returned calls and emails.
In fact, if I really want to communicate with Riv, I've learned to email, then
call, and, if needed, follow-up with another email or call. As a person who
deals with fairly high call/email volume, I get it, and it's ok with me. So the
guy's frame is later than estimated by perhaps months. He calls or emails once

two sides to every story, but I don't necessarily think that this review tells

[RBW] Re: "Aero" cable routing for bar end shifters

My wife's Atlantis came with shift cables routed that way & works as easily
as the shifting on my bike (cables only under the tape to the brake
levers). I always use Teflon coated cables (Aztec maybe?). Both bikes
have the regular Shimano housing but there may be something even more
slippery out there.

[RBW] Riv Camp in Dreamland

2013-02-10 Thread Liesl
Hey friends, I had the craziest dream last night and thought you'd all get
a kick out of it. As I told Patrick over lunch, I often have dreams about
being at Riv HQ. In real life, I've visited HQ probably half a dozen
times, may be more, so I know what the real place is like. But in my
dreams, it's always some big cabin/old hippie farmhouse type of place
between the edge of the woods and a meadow. There are wooden boardwalks
running through it and open-air wooden picnic tables with cardboard boxes
that are a Riv treasure-trove of old saddle bags and leather bits and all
the things I imagine are at the garage sale. It's always like this, and
sometimes I talk to Grant or Keven about bike models and it's always fun.
Oddly, I have this dream with some regularity. But in last night's dream
there was a twist!

Riv had a camp, kind of like a Girl Scot Camp, that was in redwood-covered
hills in some dream version of Marin County (I lived in Sausalito for
several years). The topography was like the steep hills over the ocean as
you drive highway 1, but again it was a redwood forest and it overlooked
the bay instead of the ocean. A bunch of Riv folk and friends, including a
dream version of Jenny Riv Chica Warrior West (whom I've never met) were
inviting me to ride up to the main building. On our way up, they were
taking great pride in showing me their recycling program which had its own
building with some sort of dreamland recycling contraptions and various
bins for compost and aluminum and plastic bottles, etc .

I woke up at this point and just started giggling, wishing that we could
all visit my dreamland Riv Camp. I think it would be great to have a Riv
Jamboree there.

Do you think these dreams perhaps gave me an unfair advantage in the raffle?

Okay, thanks for letting me share as no one else would really appreciate
this little story like you all.

I just kept the regular housing and cables since they seem to do fine for
me.

Also, I don't use the plastic housing cover that gets mounted at the base
of the bar end pod on the bottom of drops. I just run the housing from the
bar end and then tape the bars.

Re: [RBW] Re: 40/24 double mod on Bombadil

2013-02-10 Thread PATRICK MOORE
You mean "shorter", right? -- and that only if you use the outer and middle
positions. If you simply remove the outer, there is no need for a new bb at
all since normally a middle ring is centered on the cassette already. (In
my case, I had a triple biased toward the left to allow me to use the outer
(46) with all (7) cogs; when I ditched the 46, I moved it back to the
normal "triple" position with the middle -- now outer -- once again
centered on the cassette.

Re: [RBW] Re: 40/24 double mod on Bombadil

2013-02-10 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I call this sort of gearing "subcomact" and like the switch to 38/24 on the
Fargo (from a 46/36/24 triple). I lose some of the intermediate gears but
have the same range and, more important in this case is that when moving
from smooth, flat surfaces to sandy, hilly surfaces I don't need to switch
between outer and middle. I simply swapped a 38 for the 36 and a bash guard
for the 46.

I switched from a 7 sp (for Big Apples, 16-18-20-22-26-30-34 or suchlike)
to 8 speed (ditto: 13-15-16-17-19-22-26-34). It would be even better with 9
speeds and a 22-25-29-34 progression (Big Apples), but not so much better
-- for my purposes -- to be worth the hassle of seeking out the needed
spacers and cogs. I gear slightly higher and somewhat closer for the Kojak
wheels: 12-13-14-15-16-18-21-26.

I moved the spindle to the left by a couple of mm so that the chain tracks
pretty straight between the 17 and 19 t cogs (65 and 58" gears; on the
Kojaks: 15 and 16 t, 69 and 65").

I should also have mentioned that all of my bikes are outfitted with the
V-Brand
Keven's saddlebag. I like them for several reasons, not the least of which is
the very visible reflecto band that each has sewn onto the front (or,
functionally, rear-facing). For most of pannier use I use the very excellent
Swift Industries bags, each of which also has reflective sewn-on bands.

[RBW] "Aero" cable routing for bar end shifters

2013-02-10 Thread Minh
This is a question to the folks that have routed the cable housing for
their bar end shifters 'aero' style where it runs up the length of the bars
and exits the tape at the stem. I did this recently and it feels like
there is a lot more friction, i was expecting some, but it's a lot more
difficult to move the shifter, is this normal? Or is there a trick to how
to route the housing? I've tried to get the bend around the drops as wide
as possible, but it's still a pretty tight curve (i'm using noodles),

I love how clean the routing is this way--and the fact that it makes front
bag mouting a lot easier, but the feeling at the shifter is concerning,
thanks for any tips!
