We're at the date-setting stage, so chime in. 9th is off the table, and
23rd doesn't look good, but the rest of the month is available.

[RBW] OT (for goofball content): Bosco Bars daydreaming

2013-02-16 Thread Scot Brooks
I was just visualizing having some Bosco Bars and all the various hand
positions, and I had a little revelation; they look big enough and long
enough that I could really easily and comfortably put my feet up on the
flats. As obviously unsafe as that sounds, I'm definitely going to try it
if I ever get a set. Not sure if an extra "foot position" counts toward the
versatility of a bar, but I'll let history decide.

That also just made me realize that while people talk a lot about how
different bikes handle a front load, I seem to recall that giving somebody
a ride on the handlebars of my BMX bike when I was a kid was a piece of
cake, and that's *gotta *be 50 or 60 pounds at least. The Boscos would've
given the comfiest ride ever to one of my BMX passengers. If Riv ever does
a frame raffle again and I win, I'm gonna go for a
peg-provisioned-Bosco-BMX and really riding like a kid again. I wonder if
Rich can make me some sweet mag wheels...

Wonderful mix of suburbia (lot of that in So Cal), rural horse country &

quality miles. I'm glad the Atlantis is an easy bike to push. Almost on a

Is it possible to send out an advanced group that is sure to get to

or of riding in the dark on dirt that I've never been on.

[RBW] Re: A bike to grow old with?

2013-02-16 Thread Michael Hechmer
We actually went with a custom tandem for retirement. I call it my
Rollex. Since retiring, I find I have less need of a bike that will carry
a load, like the Atlantis. Touring is more often on the tandem and always
inn to inn. We take the canoe when we go camping. I now ride my
Rambouillet more and rarely my Ebisu, which is set up for carrying loads.
However I still ride a lot of dirt roads, in fact more now that I don't
commute into town, so find I still want wider tires than the Ram can handle
for those kind of rides. So, unless you plan on lugging a lot of stuff
around, I would suggest the Rodeo. Put Jack Brown's on it and you'll be
fine on dirt or pavement. If you actually see yourself touring then the
Atlantis is a great choice.

BTW, I just purchased my second Riv bike, the beautiful Saluki recently
offered here. It should be delivered on Monday. So now I will have a fat
tire Riv for the great dirt roads (although tres muddy today) here in
northern Vermont.

[RBW] Re: Speaking of merit badges...Association of Caffeinated Wheelmen

2013-02-16 Thread jinxed
I made a call to get pricing and time quotes. The sales rep mentioned
prices had increased since 09, and he was not even going to mention because
I would "choke", but he was going to see if they could keep it closer to
original than the book pricing. He's supposed to contact me Monday or
Tuesday.
I* could *go with a cheaper style, but would prefer to keep the high end
cloisonne. They are just so hefty with the antiqued brass and baked enamel.

Once I have solid info, I will create a new thread with a link to some sort
of order process.

[RBW] Re: Staff Bikes - Mark's Bontrager

2013-02-16 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Really cogent points about Keith and his place in recent cycling history.
Thanks for mentioning them.
A few of his posted "rants" are still findable via the web. A lot
disappeared after the acquisition. But, "The Myth of KOPS" is also superb
and relates significantly to GP's rider placement ideas.

I'll help to nudge this thread off-topic a bit by echoing the idea of the
early '90s bikes by Bontrager and Bridgestone to be nearly perfected
examples of mtb design. At that time, 63mm was "long travel" in front
suspension, and 80mm travel forks were for Downhill Only. The long
wheelbase bikes which Ritchey and Fisher put out at first were modern
cruisers, and had some truly compelling aspects and others which were not
so much. Only a few pushed beyond that design tenet and created the
shorter wheelbase bikes of the early 90's. Those MB's, Privateers, P-XX
bikes were designed for rigid forks and lucious trail manners.

When suspension became ubiquitous (the age of RockShox Judy...) design
shifted again - chasing behaviours warranted by bikes with a hinge in the
middle, or a fork which moved through 4 or 5 degrees of front end angle.
Different parameters henceforth, but for a glorious few years, rigid steel
frames designed for nice meaty tires.

Yeah - they were spec'd with 150+ mm level stems and dead flat bars, but
luckily that stuff is changeable.

[RBW] Re: A bike to grow old with?

2013-02-16 Thread Tim Tetrault
I think I agree with James that your two best fully functional bikes would
be the Atlantis or the Hilborne. They consistently get mentioned in the
"only one bike" debate as good choices. I also agree that when you get on
in age the Betty would do you well, if riding well into old age is a goal.
I think most of us would be delighted with the versatility of the Betty
Foy, even if step-throughs aren't yet our thing.

Re: [RBW] Midwest Rivendell and Country Bike Rally, June 1-2

2013-02-16 Thread Eric Platt
There are a couple of hotels in Preston. Country Trails & Inn is on the
north side of town and is good. There is also the Trailhead Inn which is
next to the Root River trail and looks adequate, although I've never stayed
there. The town has a grocery store and one or two restaurants, although
the best one is at the top of a really, really steep climb north of town.
The Forestville area is about 14 miles away. The Old Barn campground and
resort are about 10 miles east of Preston and is on the Root River Trail.
They have a big campground and restaurant and a hostel. Never stayed there
but ridden by it a lot. (For those who know the area, it's the resort next
to the big rock cut west of Lanesboro on the Root River trail.)
