[RBW] FS - 1 pr nearly new Big Apple 60-622 tires, $65 shipped

2013-02-19 Thread Andrew Letton
All this talk of Big Apples reminds me that I have a pair of 60mm, 700c Big
Apples that I'd like to sell for $65 shipped in the continental US. (Or $55
picked-up in the San Jose/Santa Cruz, CA area.)
I had them on my 60cm Bombadil, (with 60mm Berthoud fenders) and they fit fine,
but I realize I want/need knobbies on that bike. I rode them for no more than
50 miles. No cuts, no flats. The mold flash is still on the tread.
Photos here:

cheers,
Andrew

[RBW] Re: update RCWS24O

2013-02-19 Thread Manuel Acosta
I applaud the wonderful folks at Rivendell. Going beyond what any bike shop
would have done when it comes to accommodating for a huge campout.
For those that aren't familiar with planning any bike related venture (any
adventure for that matter) for any size group it can be daunting. Not only
do you have to worry about the many different people of different skill
levels with different backgrounds on this trip. You have to worry about
their whole experience of the event, if they are having fun or if they are
miserable. Not to mention in the back of your mind you have to think about
how the weather might be, or what happens if people are late. On top of
this you have to plan the whole thing using nothing but filmisiness of the
interweb.
With all the stresses that included in the planning, it's hard to remind
yourself to have fun.

With that said. I'm positive. In fact I will bet a handstand push-up that
this little shindig event, no matter what happens will be a blast. And in
advance I want to thank all the lovely folks at Rivendell for all their
hardwork and dedication.

Now lets go camping!

[RBW] update RCWS24O

2013-02-19 Thread grant
After a month or so of fair weather we had rain today, and it snowed down
to about 2,000 feet on the mountain. For us, that's noteworthy---not super
rare, but worth a trip to the end of the building to havagander at the
mountain. But down lower it rained, and the good news is it stopped late
Monday afternoon and the forecast is for no more rain thru the wknd. But
even with today's we-Keven-and-I are concerned about the muckiness, and I'd
rate the likelihood at 50/50 right now. On Friday Keven and I'll ride out
there mid-day and check out the rideability, and Plan B (and we'll have a
Plan C, also) is a real campground that you get to this way (all paved)

35 minute flat ride from RIV to park entrance. Thick traffic for 8 minutes,
then almost none, and a lot of it on a bike path
6.5-mile 2,000 ft climb on the road to the ranger station. On a loaded bike
it may take 2 hours, but more likely 1.5.
about 2-mile descent to the campground, maybe 20 minutes (it's not a pure
coast)

Sunset is 6pm, and if we leave---well, have lights. We'll stay together, so
don't sweat that part.

Plan C is to be determined, but Plan B's 6.5 mile climb is more of a
challenge than a joyride, so we'll figure something out. Just---be flexible
and stuff like that!

I get it, tho' Halls is north of downtown, away from where UT's campus
is It'd not surprise me in the least to have someone want to meet up on
campus, take it for a test-ride, and not come back

I'd suggest stopping in at RiverSports, Greenlees, or Earth Traverse, see if
they'd post up anything there in regards to it. West Bike would be good, but
too far out; TVB, maybe, and maybe Harpers.

Wonder if it came from MSL, actually.

I saw Jan Heine (or at least I swear it could have been him) on Green Lake
Way this morning (7:10am?) in Seattle on my commute. I tried to catch him
at a stop sign to said good morning.

That man is very, very, very fast. It was fun to see his bike IRL too. He
was at the Starbuck's intersection and I still had 400 yards to go. He was
off like a flash once more.

In any case, it was inspiring to see an experienced cyclist out doing their
thing.

[RBW] Re: Wtb 27" tires

2013-02-19 Thread RoadieRyan
Gotta disagree with the "very few 27" tire options" argument, I have fixed
up about a dozen old 10 speeds in the last couple years and there are
actually plenty of options.

For the most part you have 3 sizes to choose from*:

   - 27 x 1 1/8 a 28c equivalent
   - 27 x 1 1/4 a 32c equivalent
   - 27 x 1 3/8 a 37c equivalent

If you check out Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_pg_1?rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3A27+inch+tires&keywords=27+inch+tires&ie=UTF8&qid=1361308978

you can see lots of choices.

You can find them from Kenda, Panaracer Pasela, Michelin, Schawble, Avenir,
Cheng Shin, Sunlite, Vittoria, Continental etc. I personally like the
Kenda K40 a great looking gum wall and good bang for the buck.

*note you can also find 27x1 inch a 25c equivalent but those are actually a
bit rare - Panaracer makes one.

Re: [RBW] Re: Looks like a nice 48cm Sam Hillborne

2013-02-19 Thread Peter Morgano
When someone is selling a "like new" or "brand new" bike like this I
personally always want to have at least some back story. The frame has a
paint scheme from 3 years ago, as best I can tell, the gold decals on
green, so maybe it was at the store that long or maybe its been languishing
in a basement but price is a bit rich either way for a 3 year old bike with
lower-middle components (ex Oryx brakes-20 dollars for a set brand new).
Maybe it is the NYer in me but $1,500 seems like a better price.

Re: [RBW] Re: Back to that doggy backpack

2013-02-19 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Thanks for the responses so far. I did try to introduce him to it by
tossing in bits of food (he would whine, approach from all sides
except the open top, then finally work up his courage to dart in and
grab the morsel. I also left it in his basket, under his bedding, for
two weeks. He was still terrified when it came to getting inside.

The statute of limitations on the return is running out: do y'all
think, given the above, that there is still hope?

Maybe I should smear bacon grease in the bottom

[RBW] Riv Chicas on Pine Tar Soap

2013-02-19 Thread Liesl
Okay, I just have to query all you women (yes, women as opposed to men
reporting on their female significant others) out here on the list:

1) Have *you personally* tried Pine Tar Soap? If yes, proceed to #2! If
no—try some and then respond to question #2!

2) If yes, did you:
  a) love it
  b) hate it
  c) middle of the road
  d) Other: _

I am asking because I personally love it but constantly see references from
men whose women partners reportedly hate it. I love it, my female partner
loves it, my 30 year-old hipster daughter loves it...So I just wanna know!
I know not everyone is fer it, but I think there are women swimming
up-stream on this one, meaning they like it.

Note that it is the Official Soap of the RCW Tribe, Minneapolis Clan (of
course this doesn't mean everyone has to use it, just have an opinion about
it)

I had been dragging Dirk around in a trailer and he hated that. Then I got
the pack and it seemed to calm him being next to me. The only time he goes
in the pack is to go to doggy daycare or the dog park. He now gets excited
when I bring it out. Speaking of which... it's a beautiful day here in
Portland. i think we'll head off to Chimney Park.

I think Jim offers great advice.

[RBW] several (big) Toyo Hilsens

2013-02-19 Thread Leslie
I was chattin' w/ Steve Cheers at MSL (Mountain Sports Ltd in Bristol, VA),
and he mentioned he still has several Toyo Hilsen frames on hand I
think they'd like to move them out as part of spring cleaning, maybe make
room for newer frames (they happen to be one of the few Riv dealers
around).

Steve said has a 67 and a 61 as 700c frame/fork sets, and also a 56 in
650b. As these are Toyo frames, that 67 is a pre- 2TT so if you want
to build up a single top-tube 67

If you happen to not be into building up your own frame, would rather have
a built bike, he also has one each of those same 3 sizes as built bikes,
too. Typical Riv builds.

Steve's email is " steve AT mountainsportsltd DOT com ". The phone at
MSL is (276) 466-8988 .Site is : http://www.mountainsportsltd.com/

There's also one newer W'ford Hilsen, it's a 59, is built up. (Have to
admit, I've eyed that frame several times, but, can't quite justify an AHH
to go w/ my Ram... at least not yetand I don't want to ask them to
unbuild one, either)

Oh, one other worth mentioning they have a green 56 Sam, that's a
single-top-tube frame thing about this frame is, there is a dent on
the downtube, so the price on it is a bit lower

If you have questions, you can ask me, I'm glad to help, you can email or
PM me if ya want; but I'm not a MSL employee, feel free to just get ahold
of Steve directly

Is there a way to can set it up so the dog can crawl into the pack on his

Gradual introduction of new things combined with rewards is best for high
strung pets. Leave the pack open and put something familiar to him in it --
towel, chew toy, etc. And then reward him with a treat when he approaches
the pack, gets in it, etc. Once he's comfortable getting in the pack on his
own, try picking him up in it and rewarding him for that.

Not quite so off topic since one reason for buying the Timbuktu pet
carrier backpack that someone recommended is to let me carry my dog on

RE: [RBW] An afternoon well spent

2013-02-19 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
VERY glad you're feeling recovered and ready to ride - and that you have such a
great bike on which to take your rambles. It's a beauty!

Subject: [RBW] An afternoon well spent

Back in September I was hit by a car head on while riding my brand-new-to-me
Rambouillet. 3 broken vertebrae, 100+ facial stitches, and months of rehab
later I am back riding on semi-regular basis. The Ram was destroyed, but with
the help of Grant and Mark, I ordered a new Roadeo. It was delivered a couple
of weeks ago, and I used the holiday weekend to build it up. So, with a glass
Famous Grouse scotch, two Macanudos, and Pandora playing, I headed off to the
man cave to play. Here's the build list and a pic of the result:

Roadeo in AHH blue (with DT bosses and hour glass rack eyelets)
Nitto Technomic stem
Nitto 115 bars
Nitto Crysal Fellow seat post
Chorus brifters
Chorus RD and FD
VO Gran Cru brake calipers
VO Gran Cru crankset (48-36)
VO cages
Pacenti PL23 rims laced to Record hubs
Record chain
Wheels Mfg 13-30 cassette
Brooks Imperial saddle
Panaracer Paselas (until the GB Cerfs arrive)

I took one very cold, but very happy ride here on Long Island this afternoon.
It rides a little more sprightly than Ram. Pure fun. Thanks for reading!

My 12 year old son rides a Bontrager MTB. He has no clue how 'cool' it

Just make sure he understands how UNcool it really is if it gets stolen or
trashed... (My son frequently rode to his buddy's house on my Salsa Ala

[RBW] Re: Wtb 27" tires

2013-02-19 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
The economic turmoil in 2008 caused a 27" tire shortage. I source tires from 5
or 6 different distributors, and nobody had any 27" tires of any kind during
the summer. NYT had a 27" tire review in the style section that year, a nod to
all the old bikes coming out of hibernation. After that, the 27" tire market
blossomed. Now every major tire maker has at least one 27" offering, from
Gatorskins to Paselas to Kenda knobbies. For my money, I'd probably get Pasela
1-1/4" or some Schwalbe whitewalls. I don't see any good reason to convert to
700C. Not that you need a good reason, of course.

Arent you basically asking to "re-invent the wheel" as my 9th grade math
teacher would say? We already have a system for measuring reach, its called
a top tube, either actual or theoretical. With so many variants of saddle
postition/types/setback and variations of bars, stems etc it would be quite
the exercise in futility to try and work out the best postion with such a
random set of numbers. Just take the Riv measurements on the site and
extrapolate them on your current bike, or go to a bike shop and get a
fitting done with the measurements from the Riv site. Otherwise it is just
gonna be a morass of results.

I was happy with 27 x 1 1/4 Gatorskins on my pre-Grant B-Stone [Riv content

problem. Picture proves it happened: http://tinyurl.com/av9uqa7 We moved
them onto my wife's Raleigh mixte when we sold it to a friend, and she is

Anyone have a 52 and can measure saddle nose to bar tops at clamp just to
see if it is ballpark reachable for me?
I cannot imagine I would need a smaller frame than a 52.

It's true the selection is limited, but a Pasela is a rather
satisfactory tire, actually a good bit above "mostly basic" and the
Pasela is available in 27 x 1 1/4". If you're looking for a cheap
solution to keeping that good old bike on the road, it's a lot cheaper
and easier to not replace the wheels -- until such a time as they
actually need replacement. When that time comes, it's smart to explore
how easy a 700C conversion would be -- and that varies greatly: a simple
wheel swap and brake pad relocation for some, but for others a great
huge hassle involving relocating canti posts or hunting for long-out of
production brakes with mega reach.

[RBW] Re: Wtb 27" tires

2013-02-19 Thread Ron Mc
Pudge, my old Raleigh has the Weinmann 750 rear (650 front), and my pads
are bottomed out in those on 27" rims. It doesn't even have the 4mm pad
adjustment that would be enough for 700c. Not that I'm complaining, in our
30-mi ride last weekend, my 30-y-o Zeus hubs on Rigida rims were
out-rolling every other bike in the group.
But in the end, tires are a bunch cheaper than a wheelset.

Also - Kenda does make a 35 (27 x 1-3/8)

http://www.westernbikeworks.com/product/kenda-k40-street-27-inch-road-tire?http://www.biketiresdirect.com/product/kenda-k40-street-27-inch-road-tire?utm_campaign=products&utm_source=google&utm_medium=base&gclid=CNC4xrzHwrUCFQYGnQodC2UAyg
these are cheaper than cheap...

Today I decided I needed to try the one bike approach. I often drug out the
S1one from the basement for errands but I need more than one gear on the
weekends. For me that one bike would be my Saluki. However the fit has bugged
me for a while. So I looked at the fit in photos that I liked best on my two
previous bikes and jammed my seat (B17 imperial) forward in my VO seatpost and
lowered my bars. Instantly more comfortable and felt like I had better pedal
connection and power. Sometimes ignoring the groupthink around fit can be
helpful. This more aggressive position is helping me "just ride" more and lose
weight to look good at my pending nuptials next year. Go me!

-self congratulatorily in Philly, Justin

Ps: not selling the s1, unless its an even trade for a Yves Gomez, Betty Foy or
other Rivxte.

RE: [RBW] Wtb 27" tires

2013-02-19 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
+1 on the general concept of considering a wheel size change. I believe that
you can often move from 27 inch to 700C without changing anything else (brake
pads can slide down a few mm in the slots); the shift to 650B is harder, but
DiaCompe 750s (sold by Riv, and not too expensive) will reach, and usually not
even bottom out the pad in the slots. I reno'd a Motobecane Super Mirage into
a nice porteur style bike, but bought new 27 inch wheels (the old ones were
shot), and have regretted ever since missing the opportunity to grab the vastly
greater array of tires in either of the above-mentioned sizes. There just
isn't all that much in high quality, wider 27 inch tires.

The bike is for sale because it's unridden. my time on a bike is either on
custom Riv or the ANT purchased from Jim at Hiawatha. I am located in Atlanta
GA. Shipping across the country is probably under $200. I can handle paying the
bike shop to pack it. Unused material goods bug me to no end. I am not a
collector, lover of extra stuff, hoarder, tinkerer, or "maybe one day" kind of
guy. Would love to sell to here as dealing with eBay/craigslist buyers seems to
devolve into haggling which I loathe. Great bike, low price.
