Re: [RBW] Re: Sunday: wind, sand, sun, cold.
Speaking of a sub 65 more-than-58 gear: is the overall width of a 9 speed Shimano cassette (backside of inner/big cog to outside of outer/small cog) the same width *overall* as an 8 speed cassette? If so, I can add a 18 between the 17 and 19 without losing one on the high or low end. [RBW] Re: Front Rack ideas
I have really enjoyed the links and references on this thread. Throwing out a usage consideration, though. It's entirely possible to live two weeks out of a 25-lb. pack. So, messengers notwithstanding, what is a real-world capacity requirement for a front rack? For me, a min-sized front rack, 11-liter rando bag with Bertoud decaleur covers all my foreseen needs. Certainly not the biggest bang for the buck, but convenient, and even classy. Re: [RBW] Re: Sunday: wind, sand, sun, cold.
Thanks, Steve. Actually, I want to know if the inner and outer rear derailleur travel limits will remain the same for the 9 speed as for an 8 speed. If so, that means I can convert my Big Apple wheelset to a 9 while leaving the Kojak wheel an 8, and yet not have to fiddle with the rd limit screws. I should have been more clear; I do know that the 9 will fit on the same freehub body. You are considering going from an 8 to a 9? Piece of cake. If indexing, you need a new shifter and of course a new cassette and chain. If you have a friction shifter, are skilled enough to make it work, and do not plan to go index, all you need are the chain and cassette. Contrary to what Shimano said at the time, derailleurs and chain rings made for 8 work perfectly with 9. -- - Patrick Moore, Albuquerque, NM, USA For professional resumes, contact Patrick Moore, ACRW http://resumespecialties.com/index.html - -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Los Angeles Urban Solo ride.
Actually the best riding are the dirt roads that cross Sawmill Mtn near the top of the Ridge Route or Fish Creek canyon that crosses over to Warm Springs. I've done many loops and rides in those areas over the years, many on my rigid Bridgestone MB2 and later on my Hillborne and Ram. ~mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] 4 struts on a Mark's rack on a Betty
Since my wife carries a lot more than 4.4lbs in the Wald zip-tied to her Mark's, I'd like to add two extra struts from the back eyelets on the rack to the mid-fork braze-ons. I don't have the extra two struts that the Mark's came with, so I was going to order two 16.5cm bent Nitto struts from Riv (I know I need to order the nuts, too). But looking at a couple of photos of Riv staff bikes (Miesha and Brian), I notice that they used 4 straight struts and attached them both to the outside of the hourglass mounts on the fork. I was imagining attaching the bent struts to the inside part of the hourglass mounts, and would think that might be marginally more rigid/sturdy. Any reason why I shouldn't? Is there not enough room for brake clearance (Tektro 559s)? Does it look ugly? Any other thoughts? What about using the two short straight struts on the rack's rear eyelets, and getting two long straight struts to connect to the dropout eyelets? Has anyone done that? Do you like it? Is it sturdier? I know I should just call Riv, but it's too early there, and too late here (Thailand) to stay up another 2 hours. Thanks! [RBW] Re: 4 struts on a Mark's rack on a Betty
Hi Gernot, There was an earlier discussion on alternative installs for Mark's Rack (including your question on struts to dropout eyelets): https://groups.google.com/d/topic/rbw-owners-bunch/5waTg7bA4co/discussion I'd just try it out either way. Attaching both struts to the outside eyelet (like Miesha's) is a simpler installation than one strut inside, the other outside. I don't think it will make it more rigid/sturdy, but maybe someone's tried it and can chime in. If the intended use if for 4.4lbs, you may want to consider a different rack (like Nitto Front Rack, porteur rack, Paul's Rack, etc.). Shoji, thanks for the link to the previous discussion. I did search the group before posting (honest!) but poor keyword choice, I guess. [RBW] Re: 4 struts on a Mark's rack on a Betty
Well, I am still up, and Mark got in early to WHQ, so Rivendell is putting a couple of previously cut straight struts into my order (thanks!) along with the bent ones I ordered before I started rethinking all this. I won't get them for a month or so (Thailand), but will report back on straight struts vs bent mounted to the inside of the fork braze-ons for all of you waiting with bated breath. :) FWIW, Mark's answer was that they simply hadn't tried using the bent ones on the inside, but that he thought it should work. [RBW] Re: Front Rack ideas
Not sure how the 25lb pack thing is relevant. The OP said he wanted to carry a case of beer on his front rack. I have a Soma mini front rackhttp://store.somafab.com/somialfrra.html, with a Wald 139 zip tied on, but it is too short to clear 38mm tires and fenders. I have it p-clambed to my current bike and that works ok, but feels more wobbly than if it were bolted on, I think. Is there a way to extend the legs? I was thinking of a connector between the rack and eyelet, but I think a joint there would be prone to flex with weight. 2. The Mark's rack would be great in theory, but expensive and only is expected to take 4.4 pounds. 3. Anyone had any experience with this dutch rackhttp://www.dutchbikebits.com/index.php?route=product/productpath=38product_id=187? They sell it in the US herehttp://rollingorangebikes.com/front-carrier-steco/. Shipping/importing makes it pricey. Pros - sturdy as heck. Cons - a bit overbuilt? Damage to headtube? 4. Thishttp://twosixteen.com/fivetoedsloth/2010/10/top-racks-and-mid-fork-bosses/review of racks says Rivendell's are higher than others. True? 5. Reading that review made me look at this Blackburnhttp://www.blackburndesign.com/racks/front-racks/mtf-1-front.html. Anybody used that with Riv mid forks? 6. I looked at Jenny's Hilsen on the staff bikes page and she said she used this Sun-Lite QR rackhttp://sunlitecycling.com/product_detail.php?short_code=QR-TEC+Front+Rackcl1=RACKS+FOR+BIKES- I'd rather bolt it than use up the quick release, as it would then no longer release, quickly! 7. General considerations 1. Price 2. Weight (not of the rack, but capability - I usually throw my work bag in there and sometimes up to a case of beer - 20-30lb) 3. Can I attach a front headlight? I am loving the BM IQ fly RT from Peter White. 4. And of course quality and longevity, but I have had basic cheap racks last a long time in my daily commute needs. 8. I think the new Sam's have two eyelets on each side up front, which would probably have solved everything! Other suggestions? [RBW] Re: Los Angeles Urban Solo ride.
Hello! This is my first post here. I've owned my Hunqapillar for nearly a year and love it! I ride fat Duremes on my Hunq and did a stretch of 6-8 snow on a steepish fire road I regularly ride. Walked it up, rode it down. Any tips for keeping the brakes from freezing up so they just glide over the rims? It was 15˚F and the scary part was the ineffectual brakes. Pumping and hard braking kept them mostly functional after a few ice glide times. The powdered snow just gets in there and reduces friction a lot. http://www.flickr.com/photos/32311885@N07/ With abandon, Patrick On Sunday, February 24, 2013 6:56:55 PM UTC-7, Mike Schiller wrote: Yes, for that ride the knobbies will be fine.I need to get something like the Dureme or Little Ben for touring. ~mike On Sunday, February 24, 2013 5:38:59 PM UTC-8, dougP wrote: Mke: That came out great looking. How does the quality -- gauge of the metal, design and quality of the fittings -- compare with Honjos or Berthouds? [RBW] Re: Mixed Terrain Mt. Tam Loop
There are so many options when you roll up onto Mt. Tam. We ascended Railroad Grade from Mill Valley, then picked up Hoo Koo Ee Koo Fire Road, which brings you around to the east face of the Mountain. I will say that it's the east face which provides the steepest pitches. HKEK terminates at Blithedale Ridge, and you could either climb (briefly: steeply) Indian Fire road which (after a good climb) connects with Eldridge Grade (which can drop down to Lake Lagunitas or climb to the East Peak of Mt. Tam. We descended via Blithedale Ridge, which can be reasonably hairy - especially mid summer when trail conditions degrade. It's generally steep, loose, rutted and off-camber, especially at the top. We dropped down, then climbed up towards Corte Madera Ridge (still technically on Blithedale), then followed Blithedale down towards Mill Valley. It had probably been 20 years since I followed that all the way down (used to divert up CM Ridge), and led us down one exit early - which put us into downtown Mill Valley rather than over by the Golf Course. - J On Sunday, February 24, 2013 3:04:04 PM UTC-8, Manuel Acosta wrote: I saw these. For some reason, I've been daydreaming about the Ridge Route area myself lately! It's hard for me to motivate to take a bike ride that involves a car, though, especially since I share one car with my wife and kids. Nice to see your photos of the LA River path, Hugh. I rode that path for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and it's great to see the LA River actually start to look like a normal river in places. Attaching both struts to the outside eyelet (like Miesha's) is a simpler installation than one strut inside, the other outside. I don't think it will make it more rigid/sturdy, but maybe someone's tried it and can chime in. [RBW] Re: Front Rack ideas
Minh, I personally don't really like front loads, perhaps because I've never tried it on a bike optimized for it. I've tried baskets. rando bags. even the platrack/slickersack combo, but I particularly dislike the way the front wheel flops over as soon as you put a load on it. The only thing of substance I carry in front any more is my dog, in a wald basket strapped to a CETMA rack. Since he's small enough to fit in the basket, he's also small enough to lift up after I've straddled my bike and stabilized the bars to load him in. It's a pain, but I don't have to do it that often. -Pete in CT On Monday, February 25, 2013 12:23:34 PM UTC-5, Minh wrote: Peter P. He mentions in the original post 20-30lbs (not sure how a case of beer equates 20-30lbs but he did mention it). I read a mixed set of motivations here, you can find an affordable option like the blackburn, but if you're the type of person to think what-if down the road, i suggest just going with the pass stow, the paul's etc to settle that lingering doubt. if deep down you want one of those go for it. PS. have you actually carried 20-30lbs on the front of your bike that high? i have a nitto big front and don't even try to carry that much! 4. Nice photo of the Pirate Hunqapillar, but I'm probably biased seeing as it's my bike and all :) It was a good ride, though the police swarmed our whiskey stop and broke up our afterparty before anyone finished the ride. It's almost like they knew, somehow...hmm... I suppose after poaching the ride (respectfully... we're not really very good pirates) for 8 years it wasn't a huge surprise. We decamped for Seattle for an ad hoc afterparty at South Lake Union... What Andy didn't mention is the 'Hilly' bit: about 4000 ft of climbing, up to 8.5% grades. Good times! Re: [RBW] Re: Budget Riv? Still on the horizon?
I think in 2011 their idea was to start with the ca. $1000 Sam Hillborne frame/fork, use less expensive cromoly tubing, modify the geometry so you could span most PBHs with three sizes and then not paint the bike at all to get to $700. The buyer would spray paint the frame for a few dollars to make it look old and increase its theftproofedness. On Saturday, February 23, 2013 6:52:32 AM UTC-8, Fullylugged wrote: Materials, labor and transportation costs plus the profit margin added equals the price you pay. Rivs like the Romulus were killer deals but for one reason or another, could not be maintained. Rivs have good paint jobs and you could shave money there by doing something skimpy. As it happens, it wouldn't reflect the Riv ethos with micro thin paint or clunky tubes or robo-welded joints. The limited market for this type of bike (lugged steel, built for comfort and usefulness) prevents Schwinn-like mass production so no savings there. A used riv is your best option for lower price, probably. [RBW] Introduction
Hello! I've posted on a few threads, but thought I should officially introduce myself. I bought my Hunqapillar early last Spring, and have been delighted ever since. Due to brain injury, I have constant neurological vertigo. I was amazed to discover that my bludgeoned brain (see www.MindYourHeadCoop.org) and related proprioception via going barefoot had reached a point I could actually ride a bike. After testing out several and getting a feel for what worked and what was more challenging, I settled on Rivendell for it's hearty stiffness and go anywhere I'd be willing to ride capacity. I ride either barefoot or in leather soled moccasins on wood platform pedals Grant had laying around. Last Spring and Summer, I was able to ride a number of S20Os as well as 9 days on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Trail, going from central Colorado to the New Mexico border before a loud motorcycle overloaded my brain on one of the few short paved sections. Having the Hunqa has opened up personal transportation for me (besides walking and running), and I love riding it just to ride, or to trail heads and running from there, as well as camping (since I can't carry weight above my waist, it opens up going bikepacking my with daughters -- a real delight!). [RBW] Snow Riding Tips
Living in the mountains of Colorado, snow is a riding reality at least 6 months out of the year. While I generally avoid the major roads when it's snowy for not trusting drivers, I do ride in our wee town, which includes a short fire road to the town water tower and a few trail heads. The main issue I've encountered is brakes that get powered snow under the pads and then fail to grip the rim well. Any tips there are greatly appreciated. I've found wet snow not to have this issue, as it acts more like rain on the brakes. I ride fat Duremes and have cantilever brakes. I'm looking at getting a frame powder coated and I want to get the orange used on the Quickbeam. I asked at Riv and they said they didn't have a specific code for the color. [RBW] Expressing gratitude for efficiency in shipping packaging
Even though I'm local, I do sometimes have Rivendell ship orders to me. Like most of you, I'm a fan of the packaging efficiency. It was fun on the S24O this weekend to hear Jenny's thoughts about it. She thinks hard about how to get all your stuff SAFELY inserted into the smallest box possible. She talked about pack-jobs that turned out so well that she sought Robert out to show him before taping it shut. I also learned the secret that if you want to make any packing job much harder for Jenny, add a poster. She's straight up varsity at what she does. Anyway, as it turns out, I had the need to order a few things from somebody other than Rivendell, and the box was waiting for me in my cubicle this morning. The box was huge. I went through the mental list of what all I had ordered. I opened the box, thinking that they must have accidentally sent me something large, but no. The fill fraction inside was just very very low. My items were not fragile, which is good because this box miserably failed the Riv Chica Warrior West shake test. My items were all there, perfectly intact and undamaged, so I'm not complaining, but I am also not exaggerating when I claim that the box Jenny would have used (or fashioned) would have had one sixth the volume of the box I received. The extra space was consumed by three sheets of crumpled brown paper. I don't know whether the quality of the packaging saves me money or costs me money. I don't know if it saves or costs Rivendell either. I also don't know for sure whether there's a huge reduction in materials that go into the recycling bin (although I'm pretty sure there is a reduction). What I do know is that it borders on art, getting a package from Rivendell, and that's pretty rare and pretty cool. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Hey Rob,Jim Warren from Palos Verdes here. I have some interest, but too many bikes at home already. I know you want cash, but you don't by any chance have any interest in a nice MB-2 from 1993, do you? If that were something you had wanted, we'd have a pretty good trade+cash possibility here. (We could also both avoid shipping when I come up for the Ventura ride!) I'm thinking it would be MB-2 plus cash for the Roadeo (obviously.) Re: [RBW] Re: Los Angeles Urban Solo ride.
@ Bryan, I've been thinking of the O.R.R since I saw the article Doug mentioned in the Los Angeles Times. I've ridden the LA river a few times and I always enjoy it. Good sights. I understand the idea of getting into a car to go ride a bike seems unseemly. That said the public transit system here in SoCal is woefully lacking. I want to ride for a day in Long Beach I need to ride 15 miles to the Gold Line in So Pasadena then catch two other trains total time 120 + minutes one way. I would love a Metro station out my way say a station up to 5 miles distance. I think the ride to Cullver City is doable then ride the Ballona Creek bike trail to Marina Del Ray. Yeah and what you say about riding the streets of Los Angeles definitely builds some kind of character, hyper vigilant character. Nice to see your photos of the LA River path, Hugh. I rode that path for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and it's great to see the LA River actually start to look like a normal river in places. Jim - I lived for a number of years in Milwaukee, and I do miss the character building riding during the winter. Re: [RBW] tanaka fenders
I'm with Franklyn regarding the Tanaka fenders. I've got a 26x60mm set on my Atlantis and it took an hour or two to install, *after* I gathered all the necessary hardware and tools (spacers, drill, etc). It's not hard work, but one needs to be patient and knowing the tricks of installing metal fenders help. It is worth repeating that unlike plastic fenders, metal fenders should be installed without built-in stress. As for your questions, the gauge of the Tanaka fenders are similarly *lithe*like the Honjos. The finish on the fenders isn't bad at all and are mostly indistinguishable from the Honjos (or at least I couldn't see significant differences). The design and quality of the fittings, however, are noticeably worse than those from Honjo and Bethouds (I don't have experience with VO fenders). Unlike the Honjo, the Tanaka stays are dull and stain easily. The Tanaka daruma bolts, although stainless, also aren't in the same league as the Honjos; it's like cast+plated vs. stamped parts, if that can be an analogy. Actually, I don't mind the length of the Tanaka fenders. Yes, they're shorter than Honjos, so fender flaps are mandatory. But they're short enough such that I can actually put the bike on Euro style workstands because the front flap can bend easily. With Honjos, I have to use a standard Park workstand. Although standard Park workstands are fine, I prefer the Euro style workstands as they're more stable. Same thing with roof racks. Fork-clamp racks become an option if you don't have long front fenders getting in the way. Finally, they're nice enough and cheap enough that I'll be getting another set for my LHT. I think that's probably the best endorsement - a repeat customer. On Monday, February 25, 2013 8:47:40 AM UTC-8, Patrick Moore wrote: Great, thanks.
