[RBW] Re: One Bike Concept
Having spent years with just one bike, and now owning three and building another, I can say I'm much happier with multiple bikes. I couldn't live without my Surly LHT, complete with mustache, racks, baskets, kid seat, etc for tackling long days around town with the family (me carrying most of the stuff). And now I couldn't live without my more nimble, far lighter, and much faster 650b rando-bike for pure pleasure riding. I think two is my absolute minimum. Any more just adds to the fun! Re: [RBW] Re: One Bike Concept
In the guitar world, there's the problem known as GAS - guitar acquisition syndrome. I seem to have the bicycle equivalent. I also tend to scatter some of them around the world, so that I don't need to put up with the PITA that is present-day air travel with bicycle. One of my bikes lives permanently in my brother's house in Switzerland and another in my sister's house in Perth, so that when I visit them I can indulge in my favourite pastime without any faffing around. Then there's my spouse, who rides as much as I do, but hasn't quite attained bicycle number equality yet, though she's getting there. And to round things out, we have the touring tandem and the go-fast tandem. Nick -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Horizontal Drop outs??? was: Bombadil v. 2.0 and new Fatty Rumpkins
You don't need a tensioner to use single speed or internally geared hub with vertical dropouts. You can use a ghost chainring - an old granny chainring will do the trick. Google the term to find some pictures. http://www.mtbr.com/ssfaqcrx.aspx#ssConversionsChainTension has useful information on various ways to tension a single speed, including the ghost chainring. In advance thank you for any advice. If you have modern cantilevers with an adjustment slot for the pad position, converting from 27 to 700c should be pretty easy, provided there is 4mm of adjustment available in the slot. The difference between 27 and 650b is 23mm, not 46mm (it's the difference in radius that has to be adjusted for). If you want to continue using cantilevers, you'll have to get a framebuilder to move the studs. Or alternatively, you could get another fork designed for the 650b wheel, and use a rear disk brake with a Brake Therapy unit that mounts off the existing cantilever stud (see http://2btherapy.com/bikes/brake-therapy-conversion-kit). That way you can still convert back to 27/700c by putting back the original fork and reverting to cantilever brakes. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Question 27 wheel conversion to 700c wheels and maybe to 650b
Why are you wanting to convert from 27 (630) to 700c (622)? It's not a noticeable difference. The tire/rim availability of 700c is the only real reason (and there would be a fraction more clearance with 700c), but there are various options for the old 27 (630) standard. Jensonusa.com carry a fair selection of tires and even have a budget price wheelset for screw on freewheel that works for 126mm spacing. I converted from 27 to 700c on a bike because someone sold me a cheap (but good) 700 wheelset, complete with tires. I must have re-spaced the rear triangle, but the brakes needed nothing more than realigning the pads. I could then run either 27 or 700c within a range of 126mm to 130mm with no problem as long as the brake pads were realigned each time. [RBW] Re: Question 27 wheel conversion to 700c wheels and maybe to 650b
My experience with 27 to 700c was yes, but not as easily as I had hoped. When I tried to mount a pair of Paul's neo-retros I found that the slot for the shoe wasn't quite long enough, but the original dis-compes, with traditional pivoting shoes could be positioned OK, just at a bit of an angle. I don't see how you could get to 650b without removing the studs. Then you could probably find a center pull which might work. If you can live with a paint touch up, this is not too expensive a solution. [RBW] Re: Question 27 wheel conversion to 700c wheels and maybe to 650b
I agree there are many good 27 tires still made, including Pasela TG folding bead - Nashbar just got a new inventory of these. Schwalbe Marathons and Contis at the other end of the weight and toughness spectrum. Also agree that you can't always make the swap. My rear centerpull, Weinmann 750 is just not quite long enough to reach a 700c rim. RE: [RBW] Question 27 wheel conversion to 700c wheels and maybe to 650b
Hugh: I've converted a couple of '80s Japanese 27 inch bikes to 650B (Nishiki Century mixte here http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/7161292749/in/set-72157627582881347 , Fuji Espree here http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/5053260214/in/set-72157624973250063/ ). The conversion made both bikes much more comfortable, and I think they look great. I used the Dia Compe Model 750 brakes that Riv sells to convert the Fuji; there was still a bit of room in the slots, as they're very long reach brakes. They stop well, nevertheless. On the mixte, I built a wheelset with Sturmey Archer drum brake hubs (on list member Bobby Birmingham's recommendation). They are really nice, stop beautifully, and look appropriate with an older frame , so are good candidates for conversions. The 3 speed rear is even spaced for old frames - 118 mm, if I remember right. I liked the result of this one so much that I'm working on another one for a charity auction, using another '80s mixte frame (a Fuji) and exactly the same wheelset. [RBW] Re: One Bike Concept
I've gone around in circles wanting/not wanting an extra bike in addition to my '03 Atlantis (the frame/fork cost $900.00 back then). A few years back, I was looking into getting a Riv Custom; even had a deal with my wife that if I road all year round and lose twenty pounds, I could order one up. Road the Atlantis year-round, even lost twenty pounds, I nixt the Custom because I couldn't justify the cost of building-up another bike. Recently, I've been lusting after a HIlson 650B but then couldn't justify the cost of building-up a new bike. Shoot, I was even contemplating the Rodeo just for its sportiness. Even though I can rationalize having a another bike, I end up choking on the extra cost. So, I ended up compromising, and threw some buck on spendy Paul brakes, Honjo Hammereds, a rondo rear rack, SON delux hub with LED light, and a Phil touring hub; all that's left is swapping out the Shimano BB for a Phil. Very spendy, I know, but the Atlantis is very smooth and comfortable on the road. Plus, now I have the bike that I've-always-wanted-but-never-could-afford. But, to honest, if the economy wasn't so upside-down-in-every-which-way, I get a Hilson or Rodeo and build it up with all the bells and whistles, and call it a day and go ride. -Steve DeMont Seattle -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Rivendell All 'Rounder price question.
I posted a reply yesterday but don't see it. I appreciate all who have posted their thoughts concerning my dilemma. I would say the majority (including my wife) say do not sell, I know it is a special bike but I didn't know it was so highly regarded. After a decade of BMX, a decade of Freestyle and a decade of Mt Biking (with a few road bike years thrown in) I sometimes wonder if the Riv fits in with my bicycle evolution. I appreciate it and believe in the philosophies, but I'm going to get another Mt Bike and keep the Riv for now and see how much or how little dust it collects over the next year or so. It may end up for sale on here at that time. Thanks so much for all the input. Kevin On Sunday, March 24, 2013 5:46:05 PM UTC-7, kevin spicher wrote: Hello all.. [RBW] Re: Question 27 wheel conversion to 700c wheels and maybe to 650b
I did a conversion on a Trek 620 a while back, the brakes couldn't make the adjustment. The REAL problem is that the brake posts are much more narrow on the 27 bikes and modern brakes are designed for the wider brakes designed after the mountain bike transition. Look more a pair of old smooth post Deore XT cantilevers, they work great. I highly doubt they'll drop low enough for a 650b conversion though. Honestly, I'd just stick with 700c so you don't have to do a conversion, I don't see a big point in doing 650b conversions unless there is no clearance in the original frame; a bike made with 27 wheels and cantilevers is likely a touring bike and should easily swallow some 700 x 35's. Check out this blogpost for a bit more information, not me but the same bike I worked on: http://nihonmaru.blogspot.com/2011/08/phoenix-project-shimano-m732-cantilever.html After getting a quality pair of 27 wheels I regret doing the conversion. I got tired of always stretching the drop out to fit the modern wheel (I'm too lazy to coldset). I have some beautiful phil wood hubs laced to 27 Super Champion rims, tubes, and wolber tires that is looking for a new owner. The bearings are smooth as butter and they roll true. [RBW] Re: Was Planning on Riding Some Dirt In Marin Wednesday - San Francisco ride idea
Gabe suggests a good couple o' routes - are you starting from the city? If so, you'll have to climb and ride a bit to hit Bolinas Ridge Trail. From Ridgecrest (Seven Sisters) where it connects with Bofax, it starts wet and sloppy, then gets rocky for a bit, then opens up and is more of a farm road/firetrail. Before it connects with SFD, there is a trail which drops down to the Cross Marin Path, which is the bike path that parallels SFD and goes to Samuel P. Taylor State Park. You can follow the path and then continue on an unpaved road all the way to Inkwells Bridge, which puts you back on SFD (and you can then head back through Lagunitas and Woodacre to Fairfax. You probably won't find Bofax on a map, but that is the Bolinas-Fairfax Road. Also, SFD = Sir Francis Drake Blvd 55's will probably cover anything you are likely to find on the mountain, though the top end of Eldridge Grade (where it connects with East Ridgecrest just below the East Peak Parking lot - not really on any route suggested here) is pretty rocky. There can be some pretty good climate changes in the bay area. Layers and a shell/vest is good. If you wanted to roll up RR Grade out of Mill Valley, then cut over on Old Stage Road, you can pick up the road at Pantoll Ranger Station. Head up Ridgecrest (which I think is actually Pantoll at that point, then cut left on (West) Ridgecrest when you get to Portrero Meadow. That would get you Bolinas Ridge Trail. Once you commit to Bolinas Ridge, you are on it for a bit until you reach the trail mentioned above. You could bail out onto Bofax Road, which will eventually drop you back down to Fairfax (after a climb or two - you'll drop steeply from the ridge to Alpine Dam, then continue around the watershed lakes, over another smaller ridge and then drop down past the golf course. Going through Fairfax, there's Gestalt House on (what becomes at that point) Bolinas Ave. Also Iron Springs Brewery on Center. Expanded natural foods store right there. You're probably an hour from the city at that point, via a well-travelled but not-always-obvious route. The cue sheet for the 200K from SFR is helpful. http://www.sfrandonneurs.org/route-archive.htm (the populaire and lighthouse 200K follow the same roads out of Fairfax.) Hope that makes sense. - Jim On Monday, March 25, 2013 9:24:37 PM UTC-7, James Warren wrote: My brother and I have been talking Bolinas Ridge or perhaps some Mount Tam fire roads heading generally north via dirt and then riding Drake to get back south this Wednesday. i had a similiar first generation 57cm Heron Tourer. as a loaded tourer it handled well and was quite comfortable. i never used it with less than 4 panniers, rear rack/bag and front handlebar bag so i cant comment on how it rode unloaded it did have a couple shortcomings. first, a modern loaded tourer doenst need horizontal dropouts. second, the fork crown could fit a 700x38mm tire but wasnt wide enough to accomadate 50mm fenders while pinching SKS 45mm fenders i sold the 57cm and bought a used second generation Heron tourer (Wayfarer i believe) which has vertical dropouts and a wider/stouter fork crown. it hangs on the wall unbuilt so i cant compare but it might be called into action this summer mike goldman warwick,r.i. [RBW] Saluki Shake Down Ride!
Today was a major transition day. I trimmed and mounted the bedroom doors, thus bringing an end to a renovation project that has occupied me since new years; cleaned my shop; put in an order for vegetable seeds; and took the new to me Saluki for an hour and half shake down cruise. Given temps in the hi 30s, I skipped the screaming down hill test. It is with very mixed emotions that I have to report that this bike is in much better condition than I am! The bike came to me with the 600 HS, PW bottom bracket, Riv wheels Pari Moto tires, Mafac levers, as well as a beautiful, classic Specialized crank, VO AL. fenders and racks Unfortunately, I needed to replace the Nitto Pearl stem with something shorter and decided to try a Mark's Bar. ( the jury is still out on the latter) I swapped out a nice pair of classic pedals for my White Ind Bruce Gordon clips, replaced a hi polish tektro brakes with my neo-retros, and Deore detailers for older campy Centaur Mirage. Early, Selle Anatomica saddle. As I was headed out, it occurred to me I should take some pics before this dog rolled in mud. My quick photography doesn't do it justice but the slide show comes closest to capturing the nice paint job. I think I will rewrap the bars with something more mellow, in cloth. https://plus.google.com/photos/110692344592863063357/albums/5859744561306659185?gpinv=AMIXal9g7EErBUEyUYKaPP0wgSM6C9TiKHn9Ni94wEiDyjh8RMWDjfgGWcn720PAA0GPAYPthzVhg3mwJy6o8itISEf6eD3NAZcYRv_LMkVKt8hCyyXWRU0cfem=1authkey=CM-RtYmyvOKvxAE Next I'm off on a road trip, alas without a bike. Re: [RBW] Re: Question 27 wheel conversion to 700c wheels and maybe to 650b
i will echo what steve says, measure! i made the same assumption a few years ago (still have the bike), and did the conversion because the existing wheels were chromed steel (in poor condition), the back was no issue even with short reach side-pulls. but the front fork had tons of tire clearance already, so switching out to even long reach side-pulls didn't work, i used a make-shift drop-bolt for a few years until i found a crazy long reach sidepull (~75mm ish) made by shimano which i'm using now. This was not an uncommon occurence as i think campy or dia-compe made machined drop bolts a long time ago. [RBW] This week's adventure.
Third week in a row that Ed and I got out for a ride and took in some new dirt roads. This week we went east to the Columbia River Gorge and Multnomah Falls. Once at Multnomah Falls we decided to climb up to Larch Mtn Rd via Palmer Mill Rd, a steep dirt road used by locals. The fact that it's dirt tends to scare away the tourist. We didn't see a single car on it. Towards where it intersects with a paved road we came to Brower Rd which is closed to motorized vehicles. We decided to explore it. Ed had ridden it in the summer a few years before in the summer. It intersects Larch Mtn Rd which climbs from Troutdale for 14 miles to the top of Larch Mtn. In the winter it's closed at milepost 10 and is covered in snow until May or so. As we rode up Brower we came across more and more snow. Against better judgment we continued on pushing our bikes through snow when it became too deep to ride. The snow was interspersed with snow free areas so we felt comfortable with keeping on in spite of us both wearing less than optimal shoes (Ed wearing Sidis and me wearing Sambas. We finally came out at mile post 10 on Larch Mtn Rd. Our feet were wet and cold, our brakes weren't really working and the road wasn't plowed. For the first couple of miles we descended in tire tracks which left dry exposed road. It was a bit sketchy but we survived. Once back in Troutdale it was a nice easy ride back into town after a stop for a V8 as I was having some cramping. I was worried about time but made it back into town with plenty of time to pick-up my dog Dirk from doggy day care. What a great day. I'll most likely ride tomorrow too although most likely a ramble through Forest Park and a trip to the library with some coffee drinking and reading in there somewhere. http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/sets/72157633101635902/ --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Homers new shoes
I highly recommend the Kenda Slant Six. Great all-round tire. [RBW] Re: One Bike Concept
I personally have a Hilsen which I've had since late January. I built it up to have just one bike that would do everything I wanted a bike to do, credit card touring, fitness rides, commute (which I haven't yet accomplished) and mixed terrain. I feel as though it has met all my requirements and am so amazed at it's mixed terrain capabilities, despite how much I love this bike I have BAS Bike acquisition syndrome and plan on building up a Trek 660 as my go quick steed and then I want to build up a Trek 850 as my Atlantis type camping rig. I personally rationalize my BAS as a healthy past time. I love bicycles and will continue to collect them. Heck if I had unlimited $$$ I'd have an Appaloosa like Keven's http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/staff3.htmand and a Bomba like Snug Harborman http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/8566366471/in/faves-pedalpusher61/ And what ever I could stuff into the garage. Believe me in all other matters I'm a minimalist you can ask the wife. I think it's difficult to have just one bike but if they aren't being ridden that may be time to unload. There you have my two cents, happy cycling with how ever many bicycles you have :) Hugh -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. What do you do if something breaks and gets tied up for a while waiting parts? I completely agree with Steve. When I was only riding recreationally, e.g., once, maybe twice a week and on weekends or holidays, I only needed one bike. However, ever since I started commuting a few years ago, I found that one bike is not enough. I have things break on both bikes at the same time and actually took time off work to get it to my LBS. He was kind of enough to fit me in and get it going. Then I had him work on the 2nd bike, so that I always had two ready to go. Yes, things break, so I agree that one bike is not enough! Last year on Aug 13 I discovered a cracked MA3 rim on the back wheel of my George Longstaff. I had the LBS build me a replacement with a new Open Pro rim. That wheel was delivered on Sept. 13. A week prior, Aug 5, I discovered a cracked rear rim on the back wheel of my MAP. I sent that wheel off to Velocity for rebuild; it came back on Aug. 24. I recently ran over my rear wheel when one of my bike fell in front of my car. Luckily, the only thing broken was my rear wheel now looks like a pretzel! The bad part is it was a recently build up Mavic MA2 rim! Ugh, I still have one more and am trying to decide whether to have the rear wheel rebuild with the same spokes or get new ones...:( It is a good thing I have 4 sets of wheels, but that Mavic MA2 with DA rear hub was one of my better ones, but it will be rebuilt! Good Luck! So for most of August last year, I had two bikes deadlined. Fortunately, I had several other bikes I could ride. And it's more than just having a spare in case a bike is deadlined. My bikes are all different from one another. I like to pick the bike most appropriate to the ride I'm going to do. Of six, only one of my bikes is really suitable for touring with panniers, for example. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
