bikes, I caught the C&V bug and bought a Craigslist Miyata. And then a
Univega. And then another Univega. And then an Austro-Daimler. Each bike
had its good points but wasn't quite right, so I sold each at a modest
profit. If you factor in the time I spent cleaning and wrenching, the
profits were losses. But I had fun and I learned. Finally, I learned enough

[RBW] Decent $500-$600 off the shelf bike???

2013-04-10 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I'd suggest your sister walk into any Trek or Specialized dealer, and test ride
a few. Chances are, she'll be better off doing her own shopping than listening
to any of us snobs. "Low end parts" don't concern me. Many of my customers and
I have had many happy miles with various Alivio, Sora, and Tiagra components.
Anyway, a $600 hybrid is likely to have mid-level Deore-ish parts. Plenty of
high end Rivendells running around with Deore hubs and derailleurs.

the KHS flite is the low cost bike I picked for my ~20 something daughter,
steel frame and fork and fits some big tires as Nick mentioned. I swapped
out the stem for something shorter and put on some narrower bars. I'm

[RBW] Re: Decent $500-$600 off the shelf bike???

2013-04-10 Thread Nick Worthington

Lot's of good advice here already. Additional 2-cents: Missing Link in
Berkeley is having their annual "Trek Fest" sale - might be something
there. We had a used Bikes Direct Daws as my son's first road bike - was
decent, but had the aforementioned low end parts. He currently has a KHS
Flite 210 - kind of their entry touring bike. Takes bigger tires - have
32's on it right now, and it looks like it could go to 35-38's. Lot's of
braze-ons, on a tig welded steel frame. Usual low-end parts, but we've
been upgrading over time.

And, if you're interested, we have an REI Diamondback hybrid that we'll
sell you real cheap. Kid outgrew it, but he's ridden 60k rail trails on
it. 19 in frame. Rivish set up.

[RBW] Re: 2 person National Mall Ride Sunday

2013-04-10 Thread Dave Johnston
The girlfriend and I also went to DC on Sunday to ride around in the nice
weather. I thought the monument area would be too busy for bikes because of
all the Cherry blossom watchers, so we rode the Capital Crescent trail
instead to "Kenwood" an old neighborhood outside Bethesda that has lots of
older larger cherry trees which turned out to still be in the bud stage.
The trees were a disappointment but the ride was great. The girlfriend rode
her new to her 1993 MB-3 that I built up over the winter with Albatross
bars (used to be my MTB that I bought in 1994) and I rode an 1993 XO-3.

I'm not sure what the fountain area near the capital is all about but its
one of my favorite places in DC to take a rest while riding.

Re: [RBW] WTT: My B17 for your Flyer

2013-04-10 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Similar evaluation for the Flyer I used for a few months on a former
mountain bike: springs really too stiff for much cushion. I'm 175, so
medium weight. Mine didn't squeak, though.

I'd seriously consider a Thudbuster seatpost if I were looking for saddle
suspension. I liked the -- was it an early CODA? -- that I used some 20
years ago, but didn't like the squeaking, so returned it.

[RBW] Decent $500-$600 off the shelf bike???

2013-04-10 Thread bobish
What I've found on new bikes in this price range that's personally
objectionable are various sub-standard parts. The parts work OK but I'd like
something a little better (cranks, brake levers, etc). No point in replacing
the parts because the cost would quickly climb to where I may as well spend the
$$$ up front for something better. So personally, I'd look for used (surly, or
whatever else that's good solid quality and wide availability).

If you go for new though, the bikesdirect.com bikes (already mentioned) are
ones that have always interested me (great price point and style) but I have
never seen one in person.

Good all around guy, Kent, loves the Trek Allant:
http://kentsbike.blogspot.com/2011/07/why-i-bought-trek-allant.html

REI has some very nice bikes. If you're a member, you build up savings points
with purchases and if you can then find a bike discounted on top of it, you're
golden.

Giant bikes are usually well priced and pretty good quality at these prices. I
think they make bikes for other companies but sell basically the same bikes
under their brand as "house label" versions. At least that's what I've been
told. I had a giant MTB a while back and thought it was a really good value.

Same here on the other side of PA: Had to work overnight Tuesday and ride

Hi Michael,

Just something to chew on for you. I made the same swap you're considering.
Those springs are really stiff. If you're a lightweight, I don't think
you'll notice much difference except for some squeaking and an extra pound
or so of ballast. I just didn't feel like it even "took the edge off" for
me. Mine was stolen seatpost and all, and I swapped temporarily for a
plastic saddle then a B17. If you're a bigger guy, on the other hand, then
go for it!

You might poke around here: look at Road>Urban. I've seen the frames.
Tigged, old school design, Raleigh Sprite copies. They support wider tires,
and with modest adjustment, could handle more extensive racking.

[RBW] Decent $500-$600 off the shelf bike???

2013-04-10 Thread Scot Brooks
Hi Dustin,
A clever way to get a pretty decent touring bike, assuming she's and REI
member, would be to wait for one of those coupons where you get 20-30% off a
single item. These can be applied to the Novara bikes (REI's house brand). I've
heard pretty good things about the Novara Safari (retail $899 before coupon).
As a little bonus, it comes with a rear rack already, Conti Tour Ride tires,
and has eyelets for a front rack.

Re: [RBW] Re: April 7 SoCal Rive Ride in Ventura

2013-04-10 Thread Bryan
I'd be happy to organize a Santa Monica Mountains/Topanga State Park ride
at some point during the late spring or summer. That area is pretty close
to where I live. As you guys know, there's some great riding there with
lots of dirt and amazing ocean views. The trails can be a bit crowded,
though.

We might be able to fit in another inland ride in the meantime, before it
really heats up.

[RBW] Re: FS 64 cm Atlantis - custom blue

2013-04-10 Thread Swza
Hi everyone,
I went to check the bike out last weekend (I live in Denver) and I wanted
to let everyone know that if you are looking for an Atlantis you shouldn't
hesitate to pull the trigger on this one. The parts are all top of the
line and the bike felt great to ride. My wife sort of shut down the
purchase or I would I have definitely bought it, especially at this price.
There is a long scratch on the top tube but the bike as a whole is great.
Highly recommended.

[RBW] Spring arrives in Delaware!

2013-04-10 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
75 degrees at 6 this morning - my kind of weather! Headed out on my Homer with
a couple of my friends on carbon, and a fellow I had not met before who was
riding a pretty Moots that he rode cross country last year (he didn't know what
his bike was made of!). Beautiful loop on country roads from Wilmington out
into Pennsylvania mushroom country around Kennett Square. I was able to hang
with the fast boys for most of the 25 mile loop, and when I got dropped it
certainly wasn't Homer's fault -- I need a little time in the saddle after a
long winter. No pics, working too hard to keep up.

But then I put Homer back in the garage and hauled out the proto-App for my
normal 5 mile commute along the Brandywine Creek - which, as the picture says,
never gets old.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/8636761157/in/photostream Just about
a perfect morning, all in all.

Looking forward to riding the Delaware Water Gap with Bobby Birmingham and some
East Coasters this weekend - among my two sons and me, we'll be taking my
Atlantis, Rohloff Bombadil, and the proto-Appaloosa.

Large Trunk sack-$65 shipped. I bought this about six to eight months ago
from another list member and have yet to use it. So it must go.

are wrapped in brown cloth tape shellaced a few times w. plastic bar plugs
and have black hosing and brake cable attached. Might have to redo the tape
and length of cables/housing depending on frame size. These came off a 56cm
top tube bike w. stem placed at max height. The stem has one insertion mark
10cm above max line. Bars have some slight marks on sleeve. Very nice setup
and excellent cosmetically. Price includes shipping. $130

[RBW] Re: Saluki stuff

2013-04-10 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
When I first got my hands on a Bleriot back in the day, one of the first
things I tried was a 700c wheelset - just for fit, not for ride. With
47-57mm brakes and tires 700x28 or skinnier, it was fine. Got me to
thinking that the Riv 650B bikes are just skinny-tire 700C bikes with
longer reach brakes.
