[RBW] Re: Phone mount

2013-07-19 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
I usually get that kind of thing from deal extreme. The phone mount I got
from them works fine. Cost about $5 shipped to Israel. Took a while to
arrive but no other issues.
I thought about using it for GPS but my phone battery runs down too quickly
for that to be practical and I'm not interested in a dynohub at the moment.

[RBW] Uncommon recomendation

2013-07-19 Thread Steven Frederick
Not something I do often, especially in this group, but I'd like to
recommend Riv'ers pick up the Tour de France issue of Bicycling magazine.
Good article about the joys of going slow by a Grant fan, quotes him, even
has a brief interview. And it drives home how injurious going hard all the
time can be.

I can identify with the author because I also spent my early years as a
club cyclist trying to hang with the fast guys and ended up with strained
tendons, knee issues, etc. Grant's philosophy helped me move away from
that style of riding, though I'm still sometimes more aggressive on the
bike than my fitness warrants. And it still hurts me...

[RBW] Re: Century ride training for the un-racer?

2013-07-19 Thread Neil Prendergast
One point to add to all the great stuff above: flexibility matters. There
are some good suggestions for stretching in Just Ride.

I had a heck of a time on my first century with my lower back, just because
I probably did not have enough flexibility in my legs. I was smart enough
to have my handlebars at saddle height, but not smart enough to know that
comfort was more than that. Fortunately, that ride led me into yoga. Now
I'm much more comfortable, pretty much for all day in the saddle.

If I were "training" for that first century again, I would start doing
stretches that would open the hips, loosen the hamstrings, stretch the IT
band, and lengthen the groin muscles. Your lower back in mile 80 will thank
you. When I ride anything over 50ish miles, I usually spend about ten or
fifteen minutes somewhere stretching. I feel as refreshed from that as I do
from ice water and real food. Forward folds and pigeons are pretty good
stretches.

Re: [RBW] Century ride training for the un-racer?

2013-07-19 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
Hi Michael,

Well, if you want to ride longer distances, then you have to put in either
time or intensity.

I think the Unracer way of doing it would be to take longer and longer
rides working up to a 50-miler. The short on time method would be to take
your 10 mile commute and pump up the intensity and get your heart rate up.
There have been studies showing that 30-minutes of intense training was
worth 2 hours of endurance training, but that's probably getting off-track
of where you want to go.

--There is a very important strategy I use for the doubling your longest
distance strategy (50-mile longest for the 100-mile event).

I find my "go forever" pace. You are spinning comfortably and your body
feels like you can do it forever. Stick to that pace no matter what.

When you start the ride, people's adrenalin is flowing and even the unracer
can get caught up in the excitement and the next thing you know, you are
going too fast and are getting tired 25 miles into the ride.

Start the ride in your own bubble and find that internal pace where you are
comfortable and feel like you can maintain forever. That forever pace is
going to slow down as your ride continues, but stick with it and you'll
finish...

Good luck!
Toshi

Lots of different suggestions here, not all consistent with each other, so
I'll throw in my two cents.

In my own, personal experience, long rides are more mental than physical.
If your brain is confident that you can handle the ride, your legs will
usually obey. Usually.

If you are under 35, reasonably fit and active, and riding at least short
rides (let's call 25-ish a short ride) regularly, you can probably bang out
a hunny. When I was young and fit, I generally kept a tradition of
starting the season with a hundred mile ride, first time on the bike. On
the other hand, if you're 55, flying a desk, and not riding much, well, it
may be more of a challenge.

What's your current idea of a long ride? You've got all the way until
October... build your "trainng rides" (hey, old habits die hard) until
you're rolling at least 50, at least once a week, with other rides
scattered through the week. Or maybe just do random rides here and there,
and enjoy the adventure of not knowing -- if you finish, that'll actually
make a better story.

[RBW] Re: Century ride training for the un-racer?

2013-07-19 Thread George Schick
But PB, isn't that the time that the road race is being run on the same
course? I didn't think you could get away with that. Also, get out there
too early and none of the rest stops are really to resupply you yet. Plus,
you miss the opportunity to inch along -2mph for the first several miles of
the tour while sandwiched among the other 10,000 riders :-)

One thing I did learn the hard way after riding in my first HHH was to use
a Camelback. There are plenty of rest stops along the way so that you
really don't need the extra water capacity of the Camelback, but the first
3 rest stops are so packed with riders lined up for food, water, and
port-a-potties that you can waste 30 minutes or more just waiting. The
Camelback lets you go by without getting caught in all that mayhem.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Large Front with AHH?

2013-07-19 Thread William
Christopher

Are you using a 700c Hilsen or a 650B Hilsen? I have a Nitto Big Front
Rack and I have a 650B Hilsen, but I have never installed my Nitto Big
Front Rack on my 650B Hilsen. But, if it would be helpful, I could
probably mock it up and take a photo for you. Let me know. If your
Hilsen is 700c, then I won't bother because it won't help you.

Regarding your fender hardware, there are a number of different things one
can do. You could run one long bolt through the fender stay and the rack,
but you want to get the load-bearing rack as close to the fork braze on as
possible, and stack the fender on the rack, not the rack on the fender.

The other option is to attach the fenders to the rack. In the photo you
see there are a couple different holes where you'll bolt the rack to the
fork tip. One of those holes is actually threaded, so you can bolt your
fender clip to the rack in that hole.

[RBW] Re: Are fenders necessary for a Pacific NW tour in August?

2013-07-19 Thread David Craig
My wife and I rode the Washington and Oregon Sierra Cascades Route a few
years ago. It rained a couple of times. We could have easily avoided riding
in the rain by cowering in a restaurant or by staying in camp. Every year
is different in the mountains. There are climatic standards, but year to
year it could be wet or dry. Whether you use fenders or not ultimately
depends on how much you care to tolerate picking little bits of gravel out
of your hair.

Could I offer some unsolicited advice? If not STOP READING HERE. : )

I can't imagine touring on 55 BB's. To each his own. I much prefer 50
Schwalbe Marathon Supremes; They're much lighter than BB's and they work
just fine for the Sierra Cascades Route - even on the optional dirt
sections. Also, if you're riding a Riv with 700c's you might find as I did
that larger tires don't fit well in public trans bike racks or in Amtrak
boxes. On some tours, we've made use of public trans buses that run between
coast towns and in larger cities. We've found this approach to work great
when we'd prefer not to ride in traffic or when one of us is ill or injured
and we'd still like to make some miles. I once spent a bus ride really
sketched out with my Bombadil precariously bungeed to the front of a
coastal bus. Traveling is so easy with the Amtrak boxes that require
minimal disassembly that we've used that mode of travel many times. I've
since switched to a 26r Long Haul Trucker so that I can run big tires and
have a slightly more compact bike for public transport. Using public
transportation might not be in your plan, but it's a nice option that is
facilitated by smaller diameter tires. FYI, my Atlantis fit just fine in
racks and boxes with 37 and 40 mm tires.

If you haven't already considered it, don't bother packing a full sized
spare for the big tires you are running; it takes up space unnecessarily
for Stateside touring. In thousands of miles of touring in the US, I've
only destroyed a couple of tires unexpectedly. Every other tire problem
gave me plenty of notice. However, large, 700c Schwalbes are far from
common in LBS's. So, do buy a full-sized spare (I've found that Schwalbe is
often out of stock on some tires.) Leave it at home packaged and ready to
go with someone reliable. In these days of 2 day and overnight shipping,
you can easily have a tire sent to a bike shop or PO. When I was touring on
700 c's y wife and I packed just one spare between us - a 32 or 35 mm
Pasela to fit her Heron and my Riv. We never needed to use it in a total of
6 to 8 months of touring. If I had damaged a tire, I simply would of run
the small tire on the front and the large tire on the rear until I could
get a replacement.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Large Front with AHH?

2013-07-19 Thread David Craig
Christopher

I mounted a Nitto Front on an Atlantis without any eyelet braze-ons and
used it for touring a couple of seasons. I used the p-clamps and mounted
the fender to the rack using some spacers. It worked out fine. You'll
likely need to use the clamps on the Hilsen since, as I recall the braze on
eyelets aren't in the right place. You could try these:* *
*
*
http://tinyurl.com/k4k8rgh* *"Tubus mid-fork eyelets."
*
*
They look good and are stable attachments, but they might be too far back
to hook the rack to. I recall that the rack mount slot doesn't quite match
up with the fork and still allow a level rack top. I think an overall
better solution for the Hilsen - sale be damned - is a Mark's rack paired
with a Tubus Nova rack. It's a practical approach that works great on my
Long Haul Trucker, although I actually use a Tubus Duo for the lower rack.
Most of the time, I just use my rear rack and the small front. I really
like the looks of the Nitto large, but I never liked the unnecessary bulk.
In my opinion, the small rack and the tubus are much more stable under load.

Thanks for the tips folks. I've got the rack on order, so we'll see how it
works. Mine's a 700c Hilsen, born last year. Actually it's 360 days old.

I was hoping I'd be able to use the brazeons, but if not, that's okay. To
be honest, I've been waiting for the hub area racks (like everyone else
here), and I just got impatient.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Acorn Handlebar Bag, any color

2013-07-19 Thread dougP
Ryan:

I have Rivendell's Hobo bag & it's somewhat larger. As Steve pointed out,
it's taller. Acorn lists 4.5 liters capacity & somewhere I recall the Hobo
at around 7 liters (excluding the pockets). The Hobo will hold 2 750 ml
wine bottles but that's max. It is tall enough to just barely handle a Fed
Ex letter envelope; maybe the zipper doesn't close though.

My Hobo is now a saddlebag supported by a rear rack. When it was on the
front of my 58 cm Atlantis, it sat on a Nitto small front rack, so it's
quite a bit taller than the Acorn looks in their photo. Thinking back, the
Hobo tended to flop on the handlebars & I couldn't work out the
handlebar-to-D-ring connection to my liking. It's deep enough that
something heavy like a lock can get it to swinging easily without
additional stabilization.

FWIW, we have a couple of Acorn bags & like them a lot. They are well
thought out & well made. Since you're familiar with this one, maybe hold
out for the next run? Another option is I think Frost River (?) has one
similar to the Hobo but there's something goofy about the pockets being on
the wrong side.

[RBW] Re: Bleriot headset question

2013-07-19 Thread William
It's just a dust seal. It'll keep some of the yuck from getting down your
steer tube. The worst thing that can get down there is sweat. If you drip
sweat all over your bike, then maybe try to hack a replacement. If you
don't, then don't worry about it. You are correct that it's not a 100%
water tight seal. If you park your bike in the rain, it's getting wet down
there with or without the ring.

[RBW] Re: Newly built-up LongLow

2013-07-19 Thread Don
Ah! What a pleasure to see my bike after your build. You did a wonderful
job. She look beautiful. That bike took me from San Diego to St. Augustine
in 2005. It was absolutely flawless. Outside of that xcountry ride I really
never rode it all that much. I got into vintage British bikes. I hope you
have many pleasurable years of riding. Thanks for posting.

Luckily Julia and I just ran into Chris who let me know that this is actually
happening. I hadn't seen the replies come through but looking forward to
meeting some of you. We may get there a little earlier to watch the tour if
anyone is so inclined.

Warmly,
Adam

[RBW] Re: Nitto Large Front with AHH?

2013-07-19 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi cc,
There's an old thread from 12/2008 (Subject: "HELP - install Nitto Big
Front Rack"):
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rbw-owners-bunch/hm48Y3aiEl4

But... it could depend on your particular build. It seems like some
production models change ever so slightly, which means YMMV.

Anyway, the relevant text:

Hi Everyone--

Just to provide more supporting information, I tried to fit the Nitto
Big Front Rack on my 700c A. Homer Hilsen today and was unable to get
it mounted using the mid-fork braze-ons. I was told, however, that
the rack fits fine using the braze-ons on the 650b models. It sounds
like 26"/650b are ok but 700c is problematic.

Bummer.

[RBW] Re: Need shoe recommendations for riding.

2013-07-19 Thread Mike On A Bike
On the minimalist end of the continuum, I'd recommend the Vivobarefoot
"breatho" model. It's super lightweight, grippy (lugged sole), breathable
and very comfortable for walking. I know lots of people like a stiff shoe
for cycling, but I find this "barefoot running" shoe to be perfect as it's
sturdy enough for riding and yet feels like the least restrictive shoe you
could get. I use them with the thin gripster pedals and love the setup,
never ever slip.

They seem to be pretty well made as I've had a pair for 9 months and they
still look pretty good. I've tried several patagonia models, Chacos,
Chrome, et. al., and I don't feel like I could find a better shoe, and by a
good margin.
