Stick it out, Tom. This group is a wealth of knowledge, freely shared by a wide range of riders and riding styles. [RBW] Re: La Ruta Loquitica (The A Little Bit Crazy Ride)
Terrific write-up, Anne. I really enjoyed reading your perspective on this adventure. I've really got to do some riding in that part of the world sometime. Cheers, Shawn M. Seattle, WA (Fremont) On Wednesday, August 7, 2013 6:26:32 PM UTC-7, Anne Paulson wrote: Every time I read about one of Manny's adventures, I think to myself, Wow, that's too hard for me, glad I didn't do that one. But Jim Warren asked if I were going to ride this one, and then I wanted to reward myself for finishing up some programs, so somehow on Monday morning, there I was at the Mountain View train station, waiting to take the train to San Francisco and adventure. You dudes with all that upper body strength don't have to worry about this, but I was worried about even getting my loaded bike onto Caltrain. The bike cars I'd been on in the past have four very steep steps you have to carry your bike up. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to do that. (For good reason, as I found out the next day.) But, happily, the bike car that arrived was a different sort, where the rider just had to lift the bike up one tiny step. And, at nine in the morning, there were a whole bunch of cyclists waiting to do just that. As there were also a whole bunch of cyclists already on the train, embarking resembled a game of Bike Tetris, with bikes and riders crammed in the aisles, and much shifting at each station. Fortunately the other cyclists were patient with me and my difficulties maneuvering a bike loaded up with rear panniers in the cramped quarters. By the time we got to San Mateo where Jim Warren was to board the train, the herd had thinned and he was able to find a space with no difficulties. Once in San Francisco we went on to the Ferry Building and Pier 1 to meet up with the famous Manny and the other riders. The Ferry Building is foodie heaven; we stopped there for a bite to eat, and to get some provender for the ride. Manny pooh-poohed the idea that we needed food, but was overruled. I had awoken early to finish packing, ride to the train to take the hour and a half trip-- breakfast was a distant memory by that time. We proceeded through San Francisco, over the bridge (which sucked, as usual) and down through Sausalito, where we stopped at a bike shop. Sadly, none of us could fit in the handsome wool tweed riding breeches that were on sale-- perhaps no other riders could, either, and that's why they were on sale. We continued on to Mill Valley, for another stop, to meet another rider, for a cheese and fruit snack and for purchase of more food, some to eat then, some to bring, plus various beverages of an alcoholic nature. Manny pooh-poohed the idea that we would need anything for breakfast, saying that we'd have a downhill trip from our campsite to the Pelican Inn where we would be able to have coffee. I like coffee at breakfast but I like breakfast food as well, so I nevertheless brought food, as did others. When you read the description of the next day's ride, you will notice that there were no places at all to get food. So, if you are on a ride with Manny, it can't hurt to bring extra food, as indeed he always does. Now it was time to start the dirt... and the ride was pretty much all dirt from then on, until we got back to the Bridge the next day. We started up the east side of Old Railroad Grade. The trail was fire-road width, not too steep, but the surface is sharp pointy rocks. I was glad I had installed the Marathon 1.6 tires on the bike, but realized as I jounced around on the rocks that 75 psi was way too much air. I kept letting out more and more air. On our way up, we met up with our last rider. Now we were seven, with four Atlanti, Jim's Hunqa, a Hilsen and another fine non-Riv entrant. Of our four Atlanti, three were the original green (mine is purple) but only one of our forks was the original color: we had a kaleidoscope of green, purple, orange and blue. Odd. (And I'm sure Manny will have pictures to prove this.) At West Point Inn, at the top, I was thinking that the climb would have been iffy with narrow tires. But then, who should arrive at the top but a fit-looking Bridgestone RB-3 (?) rider on narrow tires. Clearly, this dude was a skilled rider to be able to navigate the rocky surface without getting pinch flats. We all stood around for a while appreciating each others' bikes, then descended to the campground. The campground seemed oddly wet. Hmm... I didn't think it had rained, but our campsite was muddy. Oh well. We set up camp, and stuffed ourselves with various cheese, bread, sausage, fabulous pastry and other good stuff people brought. And then it was dinner time, but having eaten all that other food, I didn't feel like eating the sandwich I had lugged up there. Manny made a little fire, expertly, as it began to get dark. There was much talk around the fire,

Re: [RBW] Re: Furious Freds, anyone? Racing Ralphs?
This reminds me of when I made snow tires with machine screws through the knobs on my old mtb tires. Wouldn't it be really great if folks just demanded large supple smooth road tires so we don't have to go to these extremes? Oh wait - the Compass 26 2.0s are exactly that. So, I was thinking of a more *MTB style or Nitto Bullmoose bar* to be a bit more upright. Re: [RBW] Trying to decide on handle bars for my Hunqapillar
I have bullmoose on my 58 Huqa but this converstion really wants to make me try Albas. I love the Bullmoose looks and the riding position but when riding trails and single track I get terrible numbness in my hands. That's something I've never been able to avoid on any mountain/trail bike. I thought by getting the Bullmoose bars up high it would go away but no luck. Noodles and Mark's bars on the Homer and Roadeo are great with very few hand issues. I've never been a cockpit fiddler (mostly because I'd rather ride than tinker) but I may need to try Albas. [RBW] Re: Trying to decide on handle bars for my Hunqapillar
Albatross bars are excellent on my Hunqapillar and I ride a lot of root, rocky, and steep single track in the Colorado Rockies. You can look through my whole photo stream, but here are two pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/32311885@N07/9360335191/ (there are a set of pics there showing the whole climb, at about 12,000 feet. Doesn't show much in the way of rocks and roots, but gives the idea) http://www.flickr.com/photos/32311885@N07/9422980161/ Set up the albas so you have a climbing grip at the top of the curve (similar to the hoods on drop bars). This works great for climbing, and removes some of the extra leverage you get from the ends of the bars, so you aren't unintentionally steering. When descending, I stay at the bar ends both for the brakes and the more upright position and leverage in steering as I thread through the rocks and roots. I can't speak to the Bosco bars, but the only possible way to improve on the Albas that I can figure would be the bullmoose boscos for the increased stiffness (which hasn't been an issue, but I can see the benefit). For reference, I've ridden (and LCG'd, lowest common gear, pushing the bike) sections of the Colorado Trail (single track mostly) and the Great Divide Mountain BIke Trail (forest service roads) with full bikepacking gear and love the Albas. Here's a Hillborne that looks pretty sweet: http://endlessvelolove.blogspot.com/2012/01/albatross-handlebar.html On Thursday, August 8, 2013 10:58:56 PM UTC-4, Ozonation wrote: I'm trying decide on *Albatross - or other -* bar for my Hunqapillar I currently have Sam Hillborne with moustache bars and it's great, but would not mind some more hand positions. I was thinking of trying *drop bars* on the Hunqapillar. And Rivendell even features a rider on mountain trails using what looks like an Albatross bar on one of its videos! [RBW] Re: Any last suggestions before I have to throw my Bleriot in a dumpster?
If you almost never use the drops on a drop bar bike then right off the bat you should raise the bars an inch or more, until the drops actually are in a usable position. I'm gonna make that recommendation even for someone with no back pain. Seems silly to waste a hand position. On Wednesday, August 7, 2013 6:49:00 PM UTC-4, Michael wrote: I am about to give up. Tearing my hair out. Aaargghhh Would appreciate any ideas you all might have. Got pushed over by a car last fall. Low speed accident. Ever since, low back hurts when I ride this bike. My other bikes are fine. My body is fine. MD says back hurting ain't from the accident. So it is something with the Bleriot. Frame is in alignment. Checked by 2 shops. Rest of bike checked out ok, too. The rear rim did get bent, but I got a new symmetrical (not off center) Synergy rim replacement that is true. Been replacing structural support components lately in case something got bent that isn't visible to the eye. Like bars, stem, saddle. Back still hurts. Tonight I will swap out the seat post. The last thing I can imagine would be new cranks/drivetrain. But I really don't wanna spend the dough unless it is possible the crank arms were bent in the accident. The bike just fell over as I bailed onto the hood of the car. And bike cranks look strong, so I doubt they are bent. At least to the eye they look good. Pedals measure equidistant from top and sides to crank arms, so they aren't bent. Any ideas? I am getting so frustrated and don't want to have to give up riding this beautiful bike. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Trying to decide on handle bars for my Hunqapillar
I started with Bullmoose bars on my Hunqapillar. Switched to Albas for a bit but found them to be too upright for my riding style. Too much weight was on the seat and there wasn't enough stretch. I found that most of my riding was on the curve of the Albas and not too comfortable. Then I lopped 1.5 inches off the ends of the Bullmoose and went back to them. They are great for trail riding and all around riding. I highly recommend them. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. The 18-toot freewheel was changed to a White Industries 16-18. A 22-tooth White Industries was put on the other side of the flip-flop hub. The chain length is set so that the following combos can be used: 42/16, 42/18, 42/22, 32/22. The bar stem was also changed from a 11cm to a 7cm. It looks like you're in like Flynn (whatever that means)!. I just heard about the source of that idiom on a replay of Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me on NPR. It's most commonly considered a reference to Errol Flynn, who had a notoriously easy time with the ladies. When you effortlessly accomplish something, you are in like Flynn. Google it, it's pretty entertaining stuff. There's one variant where in like Flynn means you effortlessly did something bad, and not only succeeded, but you also got away with it, unpunished. That also refers to Errol Flynn, who had to go to trial for his exploits with an underage girlfriend. He was acquitted, which added to his notorious rep. One of my mottoes is, If it's worth doing, it's worth doing badly. People sometimes get afraid of doing something because they won't do it well, but that is letting one's perfectionism get in the way of living one's life. Just because you can't ride like insert fast bike rider's name here or paint like El Greco or sing like Pavarotti or cook like Thomas Keller doesn't mean you shouldn't ride, and sing, and paint, and cook. Re: [RBW] Re: La Ruta Loquitica (The A Little Bit Crazy Ride)
Let me make it perfectly clear that on the ride no rider uttered one word of deprecation that I was the slowest (at least in my presence). Not one syllable. I called the initial post La Ruta Loquitica because there was much talk during the ride about whether some of the riders ought to do the randonnee La Ruta Loca: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1759191 The thing to notice about that 200K ride is that it includes pretty much everything we did in our trip in two days, and a whole lot more off-road stuff too. Which the rider is to do in one day. That should give people a good idea of the strength of some of the riders on the ride: they are very strong indeed if they are considering doing that route. And I hope to hear a recap here, if some of you guys do decide to do La Ruta Loca. It's one of the things that I love about this group in general as evidenced in the write-ups here and in my experience with riders in this group: there are all kinds a speeds, skills, styles, strengths...you name it... and no one is belittled. [RBW] Re: Tires/Wheels for new Sam Hillborne
Two concerns: Tire height and tire width. *Tire Width:* RBW says that the P45 Longboard fits tires up to 45m wide. *Tire Height:* You have to think about the *height* of the tire and being able to have enough clearance to sandwich the fender and brake arms between the top of the tire and bottom of the fork crown, and will there be enough clearance for the brake arms to move without them smushing down on the fender. Now, running a 35 tire should be able to get you more space vertically between the top of the tire and the bottom of fork crown, if a 40 doesn't work. So you could mount the fender further away from the brake arms if more space is needed so they do not contact the fender. That is the only benefit I can think of to having a narrower tire. Other than a narrower tire looks cool. For instance, both my 52 Sam and 55 Bleriot have their P45 Longboard fenders mounted as high as they will go under the fork crowns in order to accommodate my 650b x 42mm Marathons (Sam) and 650bx42mm Hetre tires (on Bleriot) with my Tektro R559 brake calipers on both bikes. I have about 1.5 mm of space between the bottom of Tektro brake arm and the fender on the Sam with marathon. The space grows as the brakes are applied. It is tight, but works great. Brakes do not touch fenders, and their is plenty of clearance for the tires. About 3mm of clearance between the Bleriot Tektro R559 brakes and the fender with Hetres. Plenty-o-space. (BTW, the Marathons are called 42mm and the Hetres are called 42mm width tires by their manufacturers, but both measure 40.5mm width on synergy rims at 55 psi). -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. ..can you once again remind me again the bicycle policy on the Pacific Surf liner? When you book your ticket you also need to add a bike. There's no charge but it reserves space on the train for your wheels. Amtrak's policy on the Surfliner is 6 bikes total per train BUT since it's new enforcement has not been stringent. I've used them 2X since it started had a bike reservation both times. A random twist that may occur is type if equipment. If the train is made up of the newer, double deck passenger cars, look for a blue bicycle logo on a car toward one end or the other. You can just wheel your bike on that without removing panniers. Melanie I happened to have this set-up on all 3 trains we used on our tour. BUT if the train is the older, single deck cars, they have steep steps up into the car. If that's the case, you need to corral the conductor (he'll actually be looking for you if you have a reservation) and LIFT your bike up to the floor level of the baggage car, about shoulder height. I can't do this with any amount of panniers. Same drill getting off. The conductor has to go into the car and hand your bike down to you on the platform. This was what I encountered on both trains I used a couple of weeks ago, and it was in Ventura that I found out about it. dougP On Thursday, August 8, 2013 9:10:03 PM UTC-7, hsmitham wrote: Gentlemen, Working on my Amtrak return trip. Hello Hugh and So Cal Rivers, I found this on the Pacific Surfliner schedule PDF I downloaded... Bicycles: Most Pacific Surfliner trains have racks for six or seven bicycles located in the “cab car”. Starting June 1, 2013 these slots will be available by reservation only. Passengers must properly secure bicycles in racks. For some departures and on Thruway buses, reservations will not be available and only a limited number of bicycles can be carried. When space is available, unboxed bicycles may be put in the bin under connecting Thruway buses. Amtrak disclaims liability for loss or damage. Passengers connecting to Trains 2, 4, and 14 will be required to check a bike in a bicycle box available for a $10.00 fee. The operative word there is *Most*. I don't know if their reservation system prevents overbooking the six or seven bicycles or not. Rephrasing Doug, the Hi-Level Surfliner consists are the one's with a cab car that has slots for our bicycles. The single level consists have the baggage car in the consist. I, too, would be challenged to lift a fully loaded Riv bicycle to the level of the baggage car. My contingency is going to be to pull the large Sackville saddle bag and Barsack from the bike and carry them on. BTW, the Hi-Level (term from the Santa Fe Railroad) are not necessarily new. Some of them are conversions Santa Fe El Capitan cars that date from June 1956. I rode the El Capitan between LA and Chicago a number of times and enjoyed the experience. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-4oho_TW0Gpo/UgWj0hmiBnI/AAw/kwdK1ZkEvFo/s1600/800px-Sante_Fe_Railroad_El_Capitan.jpg Samuel Hillborne bike recon mission for tomorrow is going to be to ride down to the Solana Beach transit station, find a time between Coasters and Amtraks (not busy), and chat up one of the station agents as to the notion that certain train numbers consistently run a specific type consist. I figure we'll ride the single track in the mid morning and figure on a couple of hours then pack up and head North to Irvine to catch the train back to Burbank. I have two choices 1:40 pm or 5:49 pm those that are heading North any thoughts? Also spoke with Curtis and were meeting in Irvine around 11 am just thought I'd mention it. Doug, can you once again remind me again the bicycle policy on the Pacific Surf liner. Thanks in advance. Looks like I'll need to let my beard grow in order to ride with you guys! So with a bunch of 1100 am arrivals... what's your agenda for the afternoon before heading down? I could certainly be on the Surfliner that arrives at 1100 am. Is there some nice lunch spot with hand crafted ales nearby? ~mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Cracked Ramboullet
My Rambouillet (only road bike) has now been gone for repair going on 8 weeks and I was told a couple of weeks ago that the bike had been shipped from the frame repair shop to the painter. When I found out that the bike had been shipped to the painter I asked if it would be possible to pick it up in Sacramento (bike was repaired there and I was going to Sacto for the day) and Riv said that it was in Chico with no mention of the fact the painter never acknowledged receipt and was not answering phone calls so they speculate that he might be on vacation. Getting the whole story took numerous emails. Unfortunately, I haven't had a very good experience dealing with Riv. I rarely received repair updates unless I constantly emailed them and the final straw was the painting. Other lacking customer service was at the start of the repair when Riv said that they would send the bike to Bernie Mikkelsen for the repair and a few days later Riv said the bike would go to Steve Rex. When I asked for a clarification Riv responded that I could go ahead with Bernie if I chose but Steve Rex is dependable. I wouldn't question their recommendation, so why turn it into a selection on my part? Riv also asked at the beginning if I had another bike to which I responded I did not and no offer of a replacement so why ask? However, after complaining directly to Grant about the painting I got an offer of a replacement bike. However, no direct response from Grant. Offer came from an employee. Riv is a small company so why wouldn't Grant respond himself? I'm pleased that Riv stands behind their products by doing the repair for free, but the customer service was somewhat lacking. Re: [RBW] Re: Ma Petite Betty
Thank you for that, Pudge. I am going to try to sign up and get my foot in the door at the Rivendell Box Art group. I hope Cecily does so as well, as hers is very cool. I had my Sam redirected to the UPS store and got some raised eyebrows over that artwork in the store. The artwork was a surprise to me and I got a kick out of it. It was a cool personal touch. Now, I wonder. Who is this person, or persons that does/do this? Wonder if we could get Kevin at Riv (he posts here) to tell us and roll over on them . I would like to express my gratitude. Or is it to become an inexplicable part of the Rivendell bicycle magic? I am admiring Cecily's restraint at this point. Once I opened my very well packed Sam in the foam and bubble wrap, there was no way I was not going to start finishing the build. Re: [RBW] Re: Cracked Ramboullet
Maybe a free repair on a 10 year old bike isn't top priority, but be that as it may If I was dealing with a customer I would let them know the deal from the get go. It also would have been helpful if one person deals with repairs and whatnot from point if contact to finished product. Just not sure if that's possible with a small scale operation like Rivendell.
