Re: [RBW] Re: More jewelry from Nitto

2014-06-05 Thread Matthew J
The problem with nylon, or using the King / Nitto without straps as a fancy
half clip, is the rider can flatten rather than get the foot into them when
accelerating from a stand still such as from a traffic signal.

The BG half clips especially paired with White platforms but also on such
diverse pedals as vintage Campy Record Stradas and MKS RX-1 is so natural.
Perhaps half clips not optimal for pure speed or beach cruising. I find
them very good for touring. They hold the foot in place well enough on
long stretches but allow me to quickly get my foot down when stopping with
a loaded bike.

Sure, could do the same clipless. But clipless means bringing a second
pair of shoes for off bike portion of my tours, something I really do not
like doing. Walking shoes take up too much space in the panniers for me.

I rode toeclips for 15+ years and I don't have problems with flattening the
cage. So I think it's a matter of what you are accustomed to and
proficient with. I see people struggling to get into clip-ins all the
time, so I don't think it's that different.

I still ride toeclips on my tandem. I like to wear normal shoes and
toeclips are the best way to ride with what you brung, if you want to be
attached to the pedals.

The rest of the time, I do ride flat pedals because I don't think I am
losing that much by not being attached to the pedals. Most of the time I
am able to keep up with all but the fastest rando riders on the long
distance rides I do. If I am not able to keep up with the medium pace
group, the foot/pedal interface has never been the problem. It's usually
not having had slept enough, eaten enough, drank enough, or something else
going wrong with the engine.

Re: [RBW] Re: RIV The Oregon Outback

2014-06-05 Thread Jim Bronson
SR-14 is busy? I didn't think so when I rode it, granted, it was on a
Saturday morning. As for the tunnels, there are buttons before each tunnel
you can push to activate warning lights to let drivers know that there are
cyclists in the tunnel. I left my taillights on throughout the Gorge
section also so that they would be lit up in the tunnels.

The only part that I found busy was the intersection of US97 and it wasn't
that bad. FWIW, we continued on all the way to Plymouth, WA, which was
quite a ways down the road, before turning north.

Taking SR-14 on the Washington side also affords you some excellent views
of Mt. Hood looking across the river, that you can't get from the Oregon
side.

That being said, if the powers that be extend the bike trail on the Oregon
side all the way to Hood River, that would be a real nice option.

If it were me, I'd stick to the south (Oregon) side the whole way to

can avoid riding on I-84 from Troutdale to Hood River for all but about 15
miles between Cascade Locks and Hood River. (They just completed a section
of the Historic Columbia River Hwy trail right around Bonneville, and the
state and other agencies seem to really be serious about completing the
missing link of trail in a shortish amount of time.)

Staying on SR-14 also means missing out on one of the best sections of the
old Historic Columbia River Hwy: between Hood River and The Dalles. The
Rowena Curves are pretty awesome, and you don't want to miss the chance
that the ex-mayor of Mosier taking a pic of you in front of the Mosier

If I lived in Portland, I'd just see if I could get someone to retrieve
me via car as Interstate 84 is right by Deschutes State Park.

Riding to Portland would be an option, the wind does not always howl
through the gorge, and it doesn't always blow west to east either. But if
you caught it on a bad day it wouldn't be pleasant.

Taking a route through the mountains would be an alternative if it was
windy. I would not want to take US26, but I know people do use bikes on
that route sometimes. It looks like there are quite a lot of National
Fores (NF) roads and other back roads looking at Google Maps, but I would
want local maps before deciding on a route.

I'm sure there's some Portlanders who have some cycling routes through
the mountains that avoid heavily traveled roads - Lolo Pass Road/NF-18
skirting the north and west flanks of Mt. Hood looks interesting.

nearest station would be Portland. If I remember correctly, the ferocious
wind blows up the Gorge, so starting from Portland, riding to the start of
the Oregon Outback and then riding the route south would make more sense to

My reference above is to using the nylon and King / new Nitto style without
straps. In my experience the straps themselves provide an assist to
getting into the pedal. Even with fairly thick shoes and socks the rider
can tell almost instantaneously whether properly in the cage or not.

Riding half clip without straps you really do not feel the clip until
putting full weight on the pedal. When hurrying from a traffic light on
crowded streets that can result in misplaced feet squishing the half clip.
At least for me this never happens with the BG half clips.

[RBW] Large Saddlesack space between rack and saddle loop

Hello-
I have 11 of space from the saddle loops to the rack on my AR. I'm wanting to
buy and run a large Riv Saddlesack there but I was wondering if that is too
much space. The specs for the bag make it seem that up to 9 is the max. Anyone
using a large saddlesack with more than 9 of air between the saddle loops and
your rack?

Thanks-

PS. I emailed Riv already and was told 'I don't know' in reply.

Maybe I just don't get how capitalism works, but the way I understand it is if
you make a commodity and supply is outpaced by demand then other suppliers
enter the market and stimulate competition. You can either increase production

Re: [RBW] Re: RIV The Oregon Outback

2014-06-05 Thread Shawn Granton
Yes, SR 14 can be busy. And there's quite a bit of tractor trailer action
too, which isn't fun when there is little to no shoulder. Traffic lessens
the further east you go, but the section between Bridge of the Gods and
Bingen can be gnarly. Plus, the Hood River Bridge is off limits to
cyclists, so if you are on the Washington side and want to cross, you'll
need to hitch a ride.

The counterpoint to the Mount Hood views from the Washington side is the
views of Mount Adams you'd get from the Oregon side.

The biggest deal breaker with the Oregon side is the unavoidable section of
I-84.

The only part that I found busy was the intersection of US97 and it wasn't

quite a ways down the road, before turning north.

Taking SR-14 on the Washington side also affords you some excellent views

That being said, if the powers that be extend the bike trail on the Oregon
side all the way to Hood River, that would be a real nice option.

Riding to Portland would be an option, the wind does not always howl

you caught it on a bad day it wouldn't be pleasant.

Re: [RBW] Re: RIV The Oregon Outback

2014-06-05 Thread Tim Gavin
Jan-

I'd also love a wider, supple tire for gravel.

I'm a huge fan of the Grand Bois tires (I run Lierres on my Riv Road
conversion and Cerf Blues on my Giordana gofast). I'm sure I'll love the
Compass tires that will replace them.

However, I'd love a Big Apple/Supermoto sized Compass tire! 26 x 2.1
and/or 2.35. I'm sure they'd be a hit in 700c sizes at those widths too.

For now, I really dig the ITS DJ Mk2 micro knobby in 26 x 2.1. It's a
supple, light, fast, wide tire. The micro knobs are great on gravel, and
the center block is reverse for faster on-road manners. This tire rides
suprisingly similar to my Lierres, but with the added cush of another 1/2
inch of width.

And it's out of stock. So please make a compass tire 2 wide. The 26 x
1.75 are a bit too narrow for me.

Thanks!

I also got my R-14 rack fitted with long struts so the Bosco-Mount can

Funny aside. After riding this guy for over a month I only just realized

the rest of the drivetrain new. The bigger four cogs are all perfecto.
Previous owner(s) must have lived in the smallest two cogs. For the time

and business problems there will be no long range loaded Touring. Sweet,
good steel ride with compliance and road feel. Surprisingly responsive with
the 26” AeroHeat wheels and the Soma Express 26X1.75 Crème tires – good
looks and good performance.

Re: [RBW] Chain Woes

2014-06-05 Thread Andrew Marchant-Shapiro
Ah, but chain cleaning (like tube patching and net mending) is a satisfying
art!

I wipe off the chain, then mix hot water with Dawn and Simple Green in a
plastic container, toss in the chain, agitate the h_ll out of it, then pour
off the liquid, wipe the chain, and rinse a couple more times. Dry with a
heat gun, then lube with something light (ProGold), wipe, and bag for a
week or so. Then wipe it down again thoroughly and lube with Chain-L.

FWIW, I have had one chain break in 45 years of riding, and it was on a
single-speed with a Sachs 8-speed chain and wasn't (IIRC) a removable
link. I *was* pulling a trailer with children at the time, so that may
have been a factor.

[RBW] Re: Someone here may be interested...

2014-06-05 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
There is no specific restriction on posting RBW bike ads found here and
there.

The post should be clearly marked as to whether the ad is yours, or whether
the seller is known to you. The intent is to reduce any kind of implied
recommendation, if it's just a faceless/unknown person selling the bike.
Many of us in this group have known one another (virtually) for many
years, and have a good sense of whose word they would take with no further
question.

Commonly, someone here in the group knows the seller, and it seems that
often they chime in with comments on the bicycle in question.

It also helps to reveal bikes which may have gone missing over the years.

hope that makes sense!

[RBW] Greetings from #20

2014-06-05 Thread jenny klug
This just in! Orders over $75 ship for F R E E !

Howdy from one of your resident RBW-shippers,

You hollered, we listened. Effective June 5, 2014, orders over $75 will
ship for free! It’s been a long time coming, and has required some trial
and error, but we’ve finally found shipping methods that work really well
for us. And for you.

Orders between $75 and $150 will ship via UPS SurePost. What the heck is
SurePost, you ask? It’s a collaborative effort between UPS and USPS— UPS
picks up our packages, delivers it to your nearest Post Office, and USPS
delivers it to you. It’s a pretty sweet relationship. And orders over $150
will continue to ship via UPS Ground (with the exception of larger,
high-value orders, like bikes and wheels and so on). As usual, if you need
your order more quickly, please feel free to choose 3-day, 2-day, or
next-day service when you checkout.

Thanks for all your patience and feedback while we’ve worked on figuring
this all out. Most shipping-related questions can be answered here
http://www.rivbike.com/Articles.asp?ID=39. Any other inquiries, feel free
to drop me/Jenny a line: jenny AT rivbike DOT com.

Keep the orders coming!

Your pal,
—jenny @ RBW

[RBW] FS: Bags Shameless Plug.

2014-06-05 Thread David Banzer
Hello! Sorry to iBOB listers for the crosspost.

I started making basic small bags and have a couple for sale here:
treetop.bigcartel.com

Short story and Riv content...
I tried to set my new Riv Redwood up as a front rack loaded rando style bike.
Affected handling too much for my taste. This coincided with finding some small
pieces of cotton duck and the great bag experiment started to outfit my Redwood
with bags that didn't rely on rack supports. Basically I wanted to split loads
between a saddle wedge and a front bag. The experiment continues and basic bag
making has become a fun hobby. I'll continue to make bags, some for myself to
test, some to sell to raise money for more bag-related tools.

Just a note as well. Custom bags probably aren't in my plans in the near future.

Input is welcome though! I'm going to design a rackless front bag shortly. Any
thoughts on front bags that attach to handlebars/stem-or-headtube?

Thanks,
David

Chad,
I can't believe I rode by without noticing your bike!!! I must have had
the tunnel vision going with the road being so crowded early in the race.
How did the Sam perform on the rough roads with your tire choice and
mustache bars? I was amazed at how stable the Atlantis was in the rough
stuff and how fast and far I was able to coast down the hills. The
vibrations from the stiff tires with too much air pressure really wore on
me towards the end of the race; I might wrap a layer of cork tape on the
handlebars to see if it absorbs some of the vibrations. Fortunately the
roads smoothed out for the last 20-30 miles. I am sorry to hear about your
mechanical problems; you will have to give it a try again next year.

Re MTB chain stay length: my 1990 MB-1 is much easier to pedal on long uphill
trails than my 1987 Schwinn Sierra, and the Schwinn goes downhill like a rocket
rail sled in comparison to the B'stone. Those two bikes are kind of at extremes
of chainstay length - I think the MB-1 broke ground with short stays and the
Schwinn is classic early trail bike. FWIW.

[RBW] Thread Thwacking

2014-06-05 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Hey all -

I just deleted the Nitto/Jewelry thread as it seems to have degenerated
significantly. I was going to just go through and pick off the posts that
were getting less-than-civil, but I'm working on a project today and simply
don't have the time to do so. Hence the big hatchet.

Apologies for the loss of information which might have been useful.

I'd ask that folks please remember that being a part of the discussion
means a polite and respectful tone in all posts. Somethings don't come
across particularly well through the written word. And as a final
suggestion, if you really have a point to make to a specific individual on
this list, perhaps that is better done directly.

Thanks!

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Roadeo, 58 Blue/White, Threadless $950

2014-06-05 Thread allenmichael
Help. I have too many bikes—too many Rivendell Bikes. I sold my Atlantis
but then bought a second Rambouillet and a Roadeo.

Here is a link to the craigslist ad. No pictures yet, but I will try to get
some up tomorrow. The bike has been well ridden (not by me) and has paint
chips and scratches.

I would prefer to sell locally in SF Bay Area but would be willing to ship.

The price is for the f/f/hs/bb, but I would also consider selling the bike
complete. Most of the build details are in the craigslist ad.

2014-06-05 Thread Manuel Acosta
So what I'm hearing is that theres two nights at China Camp (Saturday and
Sunday) then one night at Diablo?
If thats the plan here's some rides I can suggest.

I was planning on leading a ride from the Ferry building to china camp via
that Saturday morning.
Proposed route here.
http://tinyurl.com/kfh3edw

Sunday Morning China camp ramble

Do a Mtbing loop. hang out maybe go bike and fish somewhere. Sleep.

Alternative option For sunday after riding and fishing ( Take the ferry
back the the City, bart to Walnut creek shell ride stealth camp)

Monday Morning: ride to top'o diablo campground and camp.Ride dirt Tuesday
morning.

Just a thought of rides to expect.

Saturday seems doable. Maybe.
Sunday Riding can definitely happen.

Monday Riding is typical of the Tradition that is camping at Mt.Diablo

Let me know hows this fares with everyone.
I'm pretty sure we can just wing it too

As mentioned above, I've reserved a 40-person group site at China Camp for
 2 nights, July 12 13th. And because it's RBW's backyard, I've reserved a
30-person group site on Mt Diablo for Monday, July 14th. I assume there
will be some drop off of attendees, or even some informal camping in the
 backcountry for Monday.

Master wheelbuilder Rich Lesnik has confirmed his attendance, as has RBW
all around nice guy Vince Nivolo. More announcements of RBW folk will be
 forthcoming.

For planning purposes, now would be a good time to let me know if you're
really going to attend. The poll didn't exceed 40, but if we have many more
than that, we should get another campsite or two.

I have some volunteers already, but if you want to volunteer for something
(leading a ride, cooking, shuttling, moonshine distilling), let me know
 that too.

 cheers

What tires were you thinking of using for the route? The 1.9 smooth

the 3 tires on my Krampus seem like overbiking.

Jan Heine did the route, very fast, on smooth 42mm Compass Babyshoe

As mentioned above, I've reserved a 40-person group site at China Camp for 2
 nights, July 12 13th. And because it's RBW's backyard, I've reserved a
30-person group site on Mt Diablo for Monday, July 14th. I assume there will
be some drop off of attendees, or even some informal camping in the
 backcountry for Monday.

Master wheelbuilder Rich Lesnik has confirmed his attendance, as has RBW all
around nice guy Vince Nivolo.

(leading a ride, cooking, shuttling, moonshine distilling), let me know that
 too.

It depends on how bad the performance is on the remaining 10%. I've seen
the pictures of the Oregon Outback route, and I understand why a lot of the
riders wanted something wider than 42 mm tires. If I were riding that route
on 42 mm tires, I'd end up walking a lot. I'd give up a lot of speed in a
bike tire in order not to have to walk 35 miles.

On the other hand, 30% of the ride was on paved roads, where any
knobbies would slow you down considerably. It's no coincidence that the two
fastest finishers were on road tires (38 and 42 mm wide). My current
hypothesis is that wider high-performance road tires (if they were in fact
available) would be ideal for this event, but considering the currently
available options, I'd choose the same tires again if I was going for a

As mentioned above, I've reserved a 40-person group site at China Camp for 2
 nights, July 12 13th. And because it's RBW's backyard, I've reserved a
30-person group site on Mt Diablo for Monday, July 14th. I assume there will
be some drop off of attendees, or even some informal camping in the
 backcountry for Monday.

Master wheelbuilder Rich Lesnik has confirmed his attendance, as has RBW all
around nice guy Vince Nivolo.

(leading a ride, cooking, shuttling, moonshine distilling), let me know that
 too.

 cheers
 jim

[RBW] Re: So who owns a Cheviot now?

2014-06-05 Thread Michael

Wow!! That's a nice build! Has she ever had a Rivbike before?

I have been trying to get my wife on a Betty, and now a Chevy, but she is
content with her Raleigh.
I did get her on a B67, but she didn't like it, so back to the Terry saddle.
Oh well, I guess Riv's aren't every wife's cup of tea.

Now think how awesome that would be if you and your wife had the same PBHs.
Then you could ride all those RBW models. Let's see, a Chevy for her, a Sam
for me, a Homer for her, a Roadeo for me...

[RBW] Re: Praise to panaracer

2014-06-05 Thread Bruce Smitham
I just purchased Bruce Gordon Rock Rolls 700c X 43mm and I'm pretty sure
they are made by Panaracer/Panasonic. It's one of the reason's I chose them
besides the favorable reviews. I was looking into Surly Knard 41cm and some
Clements. I've been riding my 56 Sam Hillborne with Schwalbe Marathon
Supreme 35mm that have been working surprisingly well on dirt in Los
Penasquitos Canyon. I cant wait to try out the BG tires and will also use
them for a Catalina inner island tour with my bro's later in the summer.

I just want to take a minute to appreciate all of the amazing small batch

 distributed goodies.

[RBW] Riding the Columbia Gorge

2014-06-05 Thread Aaron Young
The 197 is actually a uphill bridge going northward, but there is a
sidewalk only on the east sudden of the bridge. I usually take the
sidewalk in both directions because th bridge is pretty narrow and long
enough for traffic to catch up.

The 97 is also open to bikes, it is narrow and has no sidewalks. It is a
bit shorter than the 197 though and the traffic is slower so taking the
lane isn't such a big deal.

Have a great ride. It's beautiful country.
