Nice. It makes me want to visit Colorado with my bike. And that's a lot for a Vermonter to say in autumn! I'm always amazed by people who avoid riding on dirt roads. Just as your photo essay shows, they provide the best combination of beautiful views and light traffic. Glad to read that your recovery is going well. We're just back from our Block Island trip. [RBW] Re: Platform/Spiked pedals question (gripsters, grip kings, etc.)
I like Grip Kings a lot but not without spikes. I bought a pack from Riv, drilled holes, and screwed them in. Transformed the pedal into something much more useable and very comfortable. I like the VP Vice that Ocean Air sells (very similar to the Thin Gripster from Riv; Rob has a great comparison article for which someone below already provided the link) but find shoe selection is important as the platform is more or less flat. The pedal is also not as wide as it could be because the inner edge comes right to the crank. With wider shoes (for me Chacos and 5.10s) this has meant my feet have been forced a little further outward than I'd like. I have come to prefer the Wellgo MG-1. It's a bigger platform than the VP, but not nearly as thin, uses a traditional pedal wrench thus does not come as close to crank arms, and it's a little concave. I find the shape better for me. I say this with all of the usual YMMV, IMHO, and so forth caveats. There are so many great choices out there and what's been most important for me is seeing the wonderful benefits of flats over clips, especially, in my case, for mountain biking. Good luck, Christian On Sunday, September 28, 2014 1:47:06 PM UTC-4, lungimsam wrote: Thinking about a platform pedal. Does this mating happen with the gripsters and grip kings? Are the spikes removable if desired? Or is it easy to shift the foot around without having to lift off pedal to adjust? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Platform/Spiked pedals question (gripsters, grip kings, etc.)
I used the grip kings for a year without pins, and then I bought the DIY pin kit and spent 15 minutes drilling and tapping the pins in. What a revelation! It's got the lateral grip akin to being clipped in with none of the downsides. I can even ride relatively hard in flip flops now. I love the combo of grip kings and pins. I have the Grand Bois version of those tires--the Cerf Blue--on my Giordana. I haven't put as many miles on that bike (my Riv and my KOM hog all my time), but I've had a wonderful, flat free experience as well. Note: I'm a cautious rider but these tires give me a level of confidence I have not experienced before. These are the Cayuse Pass 26mm tires - I know, not nice and wide like our Rivendells will accept, but that's the size that fit on my non-Riv bike and so I bought them back in April. I didn't know what to expect for longevity, and actually had some misgivings about the whole supple casing, extra light, not very thick tread. I'm used to getting 4,000 miles out of tires, mostly Vittoria Rubinos in the past few years. And I've always chosen tires with advertised built-in flat protection of some kind. So, ok, I put these tires on my bike on April 8, then went to Tennessee and rode 400 miles on some chewed up, barely paved rural roads (as well as decent paved ones). I've ridden about 10 miles on gravel, couple of miles at a time (because it was 'there') and the tires handled it well. I've ridden hundreds - really, thousands of miles on the pot-holed, chip-sealed roads of rural Virginia and Maryland and another 300+ miles in Maine. The tires now have 3,281 miles on them. I examined them carefully a few days ago (with an expert witness) - and the rear is showing some wear in the center with the cross-hatching now worn off, but the front still has visible cross-hatching on the center. Now, since I admit to being a little superstitious, I want to say the following carefully, kind of roundabout, you have to read between the lines - I've never taken the tires off the rim since installing them!! I've helped several riding companions with flats though while riding my Compass tires. I mean - we're talking 3,281 miles! The tires are really comfortable, seem fast (how to tell? I'M not fast in general...) as in rolling up to speed faster than the Rubinos, corner, descend very confidently. I have about 67 psi front, 72 rear. If you have a bike that needs narrower tires, I highly recommend these. Riv-content: the bike itself is very Rived-out: Riv handlebar tube, Sugino crank, canvas tube seat bag, Deore rear der. like on the Bleriot, same cassette chain as on the Bleriot. [RBW] Re: Platform/Spiked pedals question (gripsters, grip kings, etc.)
I have thin gripsters on both my Rivs, and also have velcro hoops on the pedals, a recent addition after many miles of riding with only naked pedals. I have probably found the perfect setup, for me and my riding. The velcro loops can be set on the loose side of snug, so my shoes can easily be repositioned, and slide out without any drama, but also hold the shoes in generally a good position on the pedals. I can lift up if I so desire, and I can also flip the pedals over and ride without the loops on my shoes. As to the spikes, they work well on my shoes - which are bald shot-putting shoes with stiff soles, the best cycling shoes I've yet found that aren't SPD or cleated. Good grip in the rain, too. And the gripsters really are *thin*, I had to lower my seats after putting on these pedals. The grip kings might work for some people, obviously they do, but for my taste they're quite too thick and lack required contact spots outboard of the pedal axle. - Andrew,, Berkeley -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Platform/Spiked pedals question (gripsters, grip kings, etc.)
At San Antonio Sicolvia yesterday, my daughter got tired of her MKS city pedals with half-clips on her utility bike. So I'm going to be upgrading her to thin gripsters. For my size 13 ice skate feet, I prefer the length of the grip kings on my upright utility bike. On Monday, September 29, 2014 10:36:17 AM UTC-5, BSWP wrote: I have thin gripsters on both my Rivs, and also have velcro hoops on the pedals, a recent addition after many miles of riding with only naked pedals. @ Jim: My iPhone has been my only camera since I got my first one (the second version), and they have now improved the camera to such a degree that there are very few times I think I wish I had a DSLR I hauled everywhere with me. It handles macros amazingly well as well as being much improved with low light situations. I am very impressed with iPhone 6's camera. @ Michael: Vermont gets amazing colors -- I've never been out east for autumn but love seeing photos. Perhaps someday! Our window of aspen color tends to be fairly brief, but is extended by variations in altitude and micro-climates, so you can squeeze 2 weeks out of it if you time the spots well. @ Hugh: It was amazing to get out and ride, almost like normal. I still feel things a bit and can't run down trails, but I've been running up them for about 4 days now. Still, I'm amazed at how fast the healing is happening -- a real blessing! Remember, you have to keep the altitude number in perspective based on distance. Three miles vertical climbing in 200 miles is pretty spread out.
