[RBW] Re: My stolen Rambouillet

2014-12-10 Thread ascpgh
What a complete drag. Individuals who steal bikes really upset the balance
of the world when they do that so it shouldn't be surprised by the ire and
response their acts elicit.

I second the photographed SNs of my bikes for universal access.

I hope it surfaces soon, will troll the CL here.

[RBW] Grant is a marketing genius

2014-12-10 Thread William R.
I agree! And he's building up a lot of great anticipation. How badly do we want
to see all of these new items! Also, in Daves email sent yesterday, he mentions
four bikes that Sam H. Is going away in support of: Appaloosa, Clementine
(assumed affectionate nick name for Clem Smith), Buffalo and Roadini? Is
Roadini another affectionate in house nick name for the Roadeo? But why would
the Sam H need to get out of the way for Roadeo?

[RBW] Re: Grant is a marketing genius

2014-12-10 Thread iamkeith
The July 28, 2008 Blug entry mentions this, along with a few other pending
models (I thought I'd seen the name before, so did a quick search). These
were initially described as "still-lugged-steel but less expensive frames,
not to replace but to supplement" the rest of the lineup.
http://rivbike.tumblr.com/knotholearchive

In addition to a less expensive mixte, in an "*indescribable greenish*"
color and limited sizes, to be called the Betty Foy, "*a singlespeed that
might be called the Simpleton*," and a "*Bleriot-Hilsen-Saluki kind of
frame called the Sam Hillborne... an all-around road and light trail frame,
touring compatible but not super beefed up for ultra-loads; and for
sidepull or centerpull brakes and tires up to about 41mm wide. Four sizes,
with 6-degree upsloping top tubes, to fit riders from about 5ft 2in to 6ft
5in*," it mentions "*an Atlantis-type bike that might be called the
Buffalo*."

The Betty Foy idea clearly morphed into the Cheviot, and is less expensive
than the 'other' Betty Foy/Yves Gomez. The Simpleton is obviously the
Simple One and a replacement for the Quickbeam, but that one was
inexpensive to begin with. And the Sam Hillborne stayed pretty much true
to intent, as a less-expensive alternative to the Hilsen . So maybe the
Buffalo will be pretty much as anticipated too, as a less expensive
alternative to the Atlantis?

On the other hand as we now know, the Appaloosa will be quite a bit
different than originally intended. So it could just be a good name, that
they're attached to, for something entirely new. Do they trademark these
names once they think of them? Would be interesting to know, in light of
the fact that this particular Blug entry was titled 'loose lips sink ships."

If the Buffalo is indeed to be an Atlantis-type bike, things are sure
getting interesting all of a sudden. Along with the Clem and new
Stretch-Hillborne Appaloosa, this might actually make THREE new bikes with
room for *fat* 700c tires!!![Grant, if you're listening, PLEASE make
one of them in that elusive in-between size, equivalent to a 56
Hunquapillar or 59.5 Atlantis, etc..!]

Yes, can someone draw a little chart to index the names with the most
obvious characteristics?

*We have some neat bikes coming up in the next 18 months. That’s how long
it takes. We may take preorders on the Clem Smith Jr,. but not yet. The Joe
Appaloosa will be so neat, and the H. Buffalo, also.*

Patrick Moore, who may well be covering already covered ground here, but

Re: [RBW] Re: Daring to wrench on my Riv's?

2014-12-10 Thread Patrick Moore
I store mine clockwise. No, I mean counter clockwise. Wait a minute.

No, really, a few months ago I finally took a deep breath and completed the
pegboard system that I started in, I think, February of 2004. Now all my
little wrenches, allen combos, pliers, drivers and so forth are in full
view on the board. It's not perfect, but it certainly beats groping in a
drawer for the 13 mm when you've got at least 1 1/2 sets of metric and
English combos plus the ratchet set plus other impedimenta all tossed in
together.

As for the drawers, they were long organized: top, bike specific including
puncture stuff. #2: wrenches. #3, drivers and hammers and pliers and other
miscellanea. #4: drill and dremel and jigsaw and some odds and ends. #5:
paint and wood finishing tools (I don't do a lot of that; just ordinary
house maintenance.)

Loose allens still in a small drawer in a small table top chest, Dremel
tools in another, the rest crank, chain, brake, and other parts. Nuts,
bolts, washers, rivets in a smaller drawer chest. (Both chests cheap
plastic; don't get ideas of fine woodwork here.)

One of the great frustrations of working a summer for Stevie was that all
the tools were just dumped on a big workbench. Of course, he had so many of
each that it wasn't that hard to find what one needed, but I missed my own
organized workspace.

[RBW] I heard you should not post your serial numbers online.

2014-12-10 Thread lungimsam
There is talk here in a few threads about posting serial numbers of your
Rivbikes bikes online.

As a musician, and member of music forums, I noticed that when peeps posted
pics of their instruments, they blacked out all or most of their serial
numbers. When I asked why they did this, they replied that if you publicly
show the serial number, and you don't have proof of purchase of the item,
anyone can come out of the woodwork and claim it is theirs.

So you all might want to think twice about posting your serial numbers and
making them for all to see, unless you have the proof of purchase.

I don't know if this really is an issue to worry about but thought I would
pass along what I was told on the musician forums, in case someone would
really be bad enough to contest ownership of your Rivendell in court. I
doubt they would win, as you would have witnesses and old pics attesting to
the fact that you have ownership, but you could avoid a possible headache
by keeping the numbers private, except for giving them to proper
authorities, though hopefully that will never be needed.

[RBW] Reconsiderations

2014-12-10 Thread Patrick Moore
1. Flighty handling of Ram when climbing steep hill, seated butt back, with
heavy rear load. I complained of this earlier, then realized that I am
simply not very used to climbing steep hill seated far back while pedaling
in a low gear. I am inclined to grab the bar in tight fists. Relaxing the
grip makes control much better.

I daresay a low trail design would track even better, but then it would
exhibit other qualities I don't care for. At any rate, it's no longer a big
deal.

2. Downtubefrictionshifting, particularly 9 cogs: I find Silver bar end
shifters delightful with a 9 speed cogset, misaligned as the ramps always
are. I found dtshifting similar cassettes somewhat less precise. Then I
realized that I'd simply forgotten my dtshifting skills; once I got back
the habit (as I have with bar end shifters) of shifting decisively, instead
of tentatively, the Silver dtubers shift very well. I still like the
control of BES better, but the dtubers work fine, especially since I don't
shift much anyway.

Y'all were waiting for this information, were y'all not?

Patrick Moore, who thought so, as he twiddled 26 rear biased lbs up a very
steep hill in the 38/26 granny today, and who defines twiddling here as ~
60 rpm.

[RBW] Re: Reconsiderations

2014-12-10 Thread Patrick Moore
One more consideration: The Ram is for it's intended purpose and niche a
delightful bike. I fret about lighter gauge tubing and a more sporting
geometry, but hell, 9/10 of my riding is the sort of errand riding I do
today: turning grocery or PO runs into nice detours. A bike that handles
elegantly and pedals briskly and liveli-ly unladen yet that can carry 35 lb
for short distances with at least modest aplomb is, in my own narrow little
world, the ideal bike.

[RBW] OT: best Mac for sophisticated Word Processing, for the $?

2014-12-10 Thread Patrick Moore
My 17" MacBook Pro is getting on for 5 years old. It's a trooper but I am
wondering about eventual replacement once this one reaches the point where
it can't work well with the latest Word or Mac OS and ditto Illustrator.

I am pretty sure that, soon, I'll no longer need a portable computer for
work, so a laptop won't be necessary. The principal considerations will be:

1. Can handle the latest Mac version of Word. (I would like to bury Word
and piss on its grave, but my work requires Word and only Word. Open Office
don't cut it.)

2. Can accept if it doesn't come stock with 4 GB of Ram.

3. Costs as little as possible.

I had a very satisfactory Mac Mini (Thanks, Ryan) but gave it away to a
friend; it also was 2010. Is the Mini a good candidate?

4. Available used if possible.

I think my optimum desideratum would be a used -- what, late model Mini?
(Something stationary) with an iPad or clone to replace laptop and Fire.

Whatch'all think?

[RBW] ISO Bay Area frame builder

2014-12-10 Thread BSWP
Well, my preferred route to a new custom touring frame fell through. Can
any in SF Bay Area suggest great builders who do lugged steel frames? I'm
tall enough that I don't fit most stock frames, and but also want to
incorporate some specific design ideas that point to a custom. Things like
Rohloff IGH with reinforced rear frame instead of bolt-on torque arm; also
braze-on centerpulls, and internal wire routing for lighting. Nothing
crazy... ;-)

Thanks,

- Andrew, Berkeley

[RBW] Re: OT: best Mac for sophisticated Word Processing, for the $?

2014-12-10 Thread Deacon Patrick
The most power for the money (aka value) is the iMac. I'd suggest picking
whatever specs work best fore and if ordering from Apple getting the RAM
upgraded to the max.

However, another consideration, and one for me that is primary given my
visual issues (nystagmus from the vertigo) is the retina display. That iMac
is pricy, though I'm not sure how it compares with the MacBook Pros with
retina. I don't need a large screen and I write in Scrivener, so power is
not my primary concern. The retina display makes a huge difference for me
when looking at the screen for more than a few moments. With it, I can
write for hours. Without it, I last about 15 minutes (though that was
before my current MBP, which is 18 mo. old).

With abandon,
Patrick.

Are you thinking of the coaster-brake version of the Rohloff? Or do
they all require a torque arm? Either way, I believe the dropout
triangulation is to address hub braking force and not usually the
location of attachment - that'd be more along the lines of a "slotted
tab" (if you wanted to avoid the lowly band clamp).

Kind of a modern spin on ze classique fronch cyclo-campeur perhaps?

10 years ago, with, admittedly, stock and relatively close-ratio cassettes,
I very happily shifted 10 speed cassettes with Retrofrictions. In all cases
the lovely 7400 series Dura Ace rds (well, actually, the 13-27 Fargo has a
very nice Nashbar road rd -- forget their trade name).

OTOH, I've happily shifted 9 wide-ranged cogs with Silvers and PowerRatchet
BES with long-cage, old, XT rds.

It'll cost about the same as a custom Riv frame , won't last as long, but

Thanks, eflayer and Joe for the builder suggestions, I'll check 'em out.

[RBW] Re: ISO Bay Area frame builder

2014-12-10 Thread BSWP
Thanks for the link, that comes close. But I was hoping for as close to RBW
geometry as I could, with either vertical dropouts and a single-cog chain
tensioner, or semi-horizontal dropouts (but those make it harder to fix the
torque arm cleanly). Not really interested in bolted-on rear dropouts. I'm
happy putting an upper limit of 42mm on the tires, too. Ample rack mounting
points, yes. That dang ugly Rohloff shifter, I have an idea to mount it on
the stem, instead of out end of the bar.

[RBW] ISO used, wind-blocking, UV blocking, decent quality cycling shades

2014-12-10 Thread Patrick Moore
Does anyone have a pair to sell cheap, or to trade? I happily use cheapos
from the hardware store or from the grocery store rack, but the True Value
ones don't fit well and the carousel ones break easily.

Brand name or lack of it no problem. Just conservative look, UV and wind
blocking, decent hinges and nose pieces.

Prefer *not too dark.*

The optometrist who checked my eyes at the 1 and 2 month (left and right
respectively) cataract surgery post op dates said that UV exposure risks
macular degeneration, which sounds bad even if I have no idea what it is.

Thanks.

Patrick Moore, who regrets selling his flip-up Rudy Projects.

You may be looking to move away from a laptop, but I would recommend
the 11" MacBook Air. You can pick up a refurb 11" from Apple for
$769, and it includes a full warranty.

Of course, the screen jump from 17" to 11" may be a bit much for you.
But...you could always connect an external.

[RBW] Re: OT: best Mac for sophisticated Word Processing, for the $?

2014-12-10 Thread LF
Hi Patrick,
I just traded up a mid 2010 mac mini core 2 duo for a mid 2011 core i5,
both via CL (craigslist). I upgraded the RAM to 16gb & added an SSD (solid
state drive), so it now has 2 internal hard drives. Then set up both drives
as a "fusion drive" -- that the mini "sees" as one hard drive. A few tools,
some patience, the directions on iFix it, and Bob's your uncle. Nice 27
inch screen. Runs all modern OS and programs very well. Much faster than
the 2010. Doubt you could find more bang for yur mac-buck. An i5 with 8gb
of ram should be just fine. (get a 8gb stick rather than 2 X 4gb, so you
can get it to 16gb later if you want).

The 2011 and 2012 mini comes in i5 or (server model) i7. Both are user
upgradable re Ram and Hard Drive. Neither has an optical drive, but those
are readily available for not much money. The 2014 mini is not so easily
upgradable, as the Ram is soldered on to the logic board.

As usual, back channel if you want.

best,
Larry

part 2.
In the Mac tablet world, the best value tablet today is the iPad mini
retina (ipad mini v2). Used for $200 to $250.
