Deac, by definition a child can't be childish - only an adult can be.
A child's wants are innocent - that's how your father looks at your
bicycles.
Teaching personal sacrifice to a child at Christmas time is the opposite of
the gift message.

Re: [RBW] Re: Does anyone have a rack mount, battery powered tail light to sell or trade?

2014-12-18 Thread Will
Thread the wire through cable housing. There are several housing gauges
available. Then use these to attach to the frame.
http://www.vintagebicyclerebuilds.com.au/cable_accessories.htm

All of it is easy to do. The cable run along the rear rack is short. There
is no dangling. Looks good too.

2014-12-18 Thread Ron Mc
anybody who wants to trade up their battery light to a USB rechargeable,
quick, sell it to Patrick. Cygo Hot Shot USB light is great, and factory
sells a rack mount for cheap. Also, the cost and weight of big and bigger
USB battery packs is coming way down this year - these things were $80 a
year ago, and now they're $15.

True Christmas is the Celebration of OneSelf as Christ , the symbol of The
Perfect Self, I AM that I AM . Free from want, for all is Perfect and in
Perfection there is no lack, hence, nothing to want of. The meaning of
"Heaven on Earth" .

So truly, every moment is "Christmas" :)

the first 100 miles. In everything, she is an aggressive charger.

It is hard to have a discussion on differing points of view where someone
takes those differing points of view as a hostile challenge.

Cannot tell from that picture, but it appears the Fuji is a very small
frame with 700c wheels. This being a Riv fan site and all, hope you do not
take it wrong when I point on there are those - as in Grant Peterson - who
believe smaller frames are better designed around smaller dia wheel sets.

Frame design notwithstanding, assuming the rider fits the frame you depict,
reaching from the saddle to the spokes while riding would involve
contorting the body in such a way the loss of balance would create a whole
lot more safety concerns than fingers brushing up against spokes.

As Steve points out in his earlier posts, there are a lot of reasons for
people not to want to use DT shifters. Danger is not one of them.

I'm in Fremont but can grab the BART to Oakland, Berkeley or the city.
Would love to be introduced to some good rides in the area.

[RBW] Re: [BOB] Re: Does anyone have a rack mount, battery powered tail light to sell or trade?

2014-12-18 Thread Patrick Moore
Maybe I got the name wrong. At any rate, what I have now is dyno driven and
I want something battery powered. I have a German rear rack, 2-bolt battery
light on the Ram and would like something similar for the Riv (custom)
commuter. I was hoping to find something used.

The photo I included was from the Peter Jon White site and showed a dynamo
powered tail light similar to the one I have.

I have site #6 reserved at Sky Camp, for 26 and 27 of December. Friend Mark

I have no point of view on your daughter's bike.

I have a point of view on whether DT shifters are any more or less safe
than Bar End. My point of view is they are not.

If you are sensitive to point of view about your daughter's bike, I suggest
you not use it as an example in support of your point of view in a public

Re: [RBW] Re: Bay Area RBW meetup group? ride or camping?

2014-12-18 Thread David Stein
Cool, some really good initial interest!

I'll setup a group in the next few days and send the link in this thread,
lets shoot for a Jan 3 9:30 kickoff at Rockridge BART. In general, I'll
stick to the first weekend of the month, and probably post my regular
weekend rides in case anyone wants to join. In general, Sundays work better
for me (can start anytime on Sunday, but not before 9:30 on Saturdays).

If anyone has any thoughts or ideas for rides please share. For the first
few months I'll cross post it to the RBW group.

You can see my Strava profile for the type of routes I have been doing, but
happy to branch out for new rides! http://www.strava.com/athletes/272929

Bottom line is Lungimsam should certainly give DT a try. He may just like

I was reading the old posts in this thread and noticed this one again,
I too tend to click the bar-end with my palm as I hold the bar, works

Never done it before, and seems like the reach may make it more

forearms while pedalling and reaching down to shift at same time.

[RBW] Re: Bar end vs. down tube shifting... What's your experience...

2014-12-18 Thread David Craig
My current Hilsen has DT shifters. As others have said, I like the looks.
I'm also very comfortable with DT shifters so, even though I'm a tall guy,
I don't really notice any issues that would ever make me want to give up
style over function.

When I had an Atlantis touring bike, I used DT shifters for several years
before switching to barends. In those years, we were touring a lot and
using Amtrak to get to the start of our tours. With a big frame, I had to
remove the bars to fit the bike into the Amtrak bike box. Not dealing with
shifter cables made that a bit easier. I also started using v-brakes and
used a threadless stem adapter for the same reasons. Releasing the brakes
was easy and not having to deal with a quill stem made getting the bars off
super simple. I did switch back to barends on my last tour. I do find them
a bit safer and easier on a loaded touring bike when riding slowly, dealing
with strong crosswinds or in traffic on rutted city streets.

[RBW] Re: Bar end vs. down tube shifting... What's your experience...

2014-12-18 Thread Geir Bentzen
I have had all the the types of shifters mentioned up to now, and more,
over the almost 50 years I have been riding bikes. Truth be told, I like
them all when they work well. I think that is the core here; what works
well for you right now on the chosen bike? DT shifters worked very well for
me in the 1970s and 80s, but I chose bar ends for my Hunqapillar this year.
It's set up with 48 cm Noodles. I just don't want to stretch or bend, and
think I may be older and stiffer the next many (I hope) years too. On the
other hand I do love the cleanliness and elegance of DT shifters. No stray
cables! I have a bike with stem shifters, a 1976 or 77 Fuji, and for that
bike it feels great. The Nitto Olympic drop bars are very narrow making the
stem an easy place to reach. The set up I have the most doubts about is for
a Sachs 7 speed where I turn a ring on the handlebar. It often feels hard
and without a clear message to me about what happened back down there. For
mountain bikes thumbies are great. In my opinion you or some earlier
owner/builder built a personality into the bike. Get to know it before you
start changing too much and end up with a different bike altogether, and
don't overthink things that work. Brifters are excellent if you ride fast
and intense with full focus on staying at the right cadence and keeping the
speed up, then you need fast and frequent shifting. But how often do you do
that?

[RBW] Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires at 25,000 miles

2014-12-18 Thread dougP
Rivendell says Schwalbe tires last a long time & don't get many flats. One
of my high mileage touring buds can vouch for both claims. He got these
for Christmas 2012, and has had 2 flats since then. When the blue puncture
protection belt started showing thru one, he decided they'd earned their
keep. The outstanding performance motivated him to get another pair of the
same tire, bumping up from 26 x 1.5 to 26 x 1.75 size. He keeps accurate
records of such things and says these have 25,000 miles on them. I've
known him for a number of years and don't doubt him. YMMV.

Pictures prove they're worn out:

In the shot with my feet in the background you can just make out a spot of
the blue belt starting to show. It was worn down to that point at a few
places around the tire. Schwalbe's website lists the 1.5" width at 870
grams. We weighed a worn out one at 825 grams.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bay Area RBW meetup group? ride or camping?

2014-12-18 Thread David Stein
Here's the link, I'll do a cross post in the RBW group a few days before,
and for the first few months. Anyone is welcome to post rides and meetups
there. I'll post my regular weekend rides there as well in case anyone
wants to join (those are usually decided sometime Friday).

Tried to think of a LOTR name for the group, wife suggested Riders of Rohan
but those Rohan guys always freaked me out a little bit. Let me know if
someone has something.

[RBW] Re: Bar end vs. down tube shifting... What's your experience...

2014-12-18 Thread lungimsam
No bosses on my 53 Bleriot or 2013 Sam.
Pondering this for a next bike I may get one day to see if I should get bosses
on the frame or not.
I guess the only way I'll know is to find a bike with them and try it out.
I am perfectly happy with my bar end shifters now though.
