[RBW] RE: Question on Big Ben handling

2015-01-26 Thread hsmitham
DS,

I mounted 26 x 2.15 Big Ben's on DT Swiss XR 425 hoops that measure 23 mm
outside diameter. I inflated them to approximately 35 psi and calipered
them at 53 mm. I rode them today on mixed terrain, road with some corning
and single track. They handled really well and seemed to roll fairly fast.
I still need to ride them on a bit steeper terrain which should be this
Friday. I'll update early next week.

That's what the kickstand is for. Use it and lean the bike against
something. The front wheel and kickstand hold the bike upright at an
angle, but give you room to remove the rear tire - that's the one that
always gets the flat, right??

A stretched out old sock (or two) works wonders...can be stretched over the

dropped into it to keep them together and from rattling. I usually have

packing and traveling. (Cheap cotton gloves also help deal with greasy
chains when pulling wheels, etc...

I am also interested in some feedback regarding Groody Brothers. They are
local to me and I've considered having them redo my recently acquired
Bombadil. The paint looks beautiful in your pictures. Groody Brothers
quoted me $200-$250 for a two color powder coat, application of decals, and
a clear coat over the decals, which sounded reasonable. I've seen some
examples of their work on local bikes and have been impressed.

[RBW] FS: Vredestein Fortezza Duocomp Retro, 700x25C, one pair

2015-01-26 Thread Anton Tutter
These are a nice set of supple, folding bead road tires that have been
discontinued. Not sure how long they were sold, but I got these a few
years ago from Nashbar and used them on a racing frame with tight
clearances (which I sold off recently). A very supple, smooth riding 25mm
clincher with classy brown side walls and fine file tread pattern (which
look a lot like the pattern on the current Compass tire line). Measure a
true 25mm inflated. Have about 500 miles on them, tops, never ridden in the
rain and never had the chance to get dirty. Never flatted. I'd happily keep
these if not for the fact that all my current bikes now fit at least 28mm
tires.

Reviews on Nashbar

.

$48 shipped CONUS for the pair.

Of course, if your bike has a double kickstand (one of mine does), none of
this is necessary because you can just leave the bike on the kickstand and
change either wheel. If the rear wheel is flat and the rear of the bike is
heavily loaded, you might have to toss some stuff on the handlebars to
weigh them down. For most everyday loads, just removing a wheel is enough
to change the balance to the other wheel. Nothing could be easier.

[RBW] Re: One drawback to flippin' your bike for roadside repair.

2015-01-26 Thread Doug Williams
Every Douglas Adams fan knows that:“A towel, [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the
Galaxy] says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar
hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it
around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta;
you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V,
inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars
which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a
miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in
hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or
avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a
mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't
see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and
of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.”
I always carry a small micro-fiber backpacking towel for all emergencies.
In addition to the above, it cleans greasy hands after touching the chain,
saves Brooks saddle during tire changes, and works as a bandage for any
wounds incurred.

Doug Williams
Don't Panic, and keep your towel handy.

[RBW] Re: One drawback to flippin' your bike for roadside repair.

2015-01-26 Thread dougP
Looks like the saddle question has been covered, so don't forget that
whatever's on the handlebars (computer, light, bell) will also come into
contact with the ground. Any bags need to be shut tight so the contents
don't escape (I rarely fasten the flap on my handlebar bag) and water
bottles tend to lose their contents, albeit gradually.

If you can remember to deal with all that in the heat of whatever repair
you are doing, go for it. I just take off whatever wheel wants attention &
lay the bike down. I'm a big fan of kickstands but it's been said that a
bike lying on the ground can't fall over.

2015-01-26 Thread Jim M.
I'd say that "heavy", "lively", and geometry don't mean much to someone
with little bike experience. If it fits, is geared properly, and is
attractive to her, she'll probably love it. My daughter's first and so far
only adult bike is a Peugeot UO-18 mixte, which could be called heavy and
is not even made from chrome moly. But it fits her, it's purple, it's
French, she likes that it's a re-use project, and it also rides well.

[RBW] Birthday Ride

2015-01-26 Thread Eric Norris
A good friend and riding companion turned 63 this past weekend, so we
celebrated with a 63-mile ride. Here’s the video to prove it happened:

Rive content: I was riding steel/leather/fenders/canvas/wool/32mm tires, etc.
Fully Rivved out, in other words.

Re: [RBW] My QR Fender QR'd

2015-01-26 Thread Bill Lindsay
I confess there was a secondary reason I bought the PDW kit. This is on my
Rawland Stag. I got a very swank custom fork for it. When I re-installed
my Honjos, the front stays were a couple mm too short. I ran 38s instead
of 42s temporarily, fretting massively on the idea that I needed to buy a
new fender stay. The PDW kit allowed me to correctly adjust my fenders for
42s. The added safety aspect was a bonus.

But...it's a heavy beast. Keep in mind that in 85 (and maybe 86?) the MB-2
was straight gauge tubing and it feels like it on the road (and when you
carry it up the basement stairs!) I'd keep looking for something a bit more
lively.

Where are you located? I have a small 93 MB-4 (for some reason BS went back
to a Japanese lugged frame that year for the MB-4) that I'd sell if you
were local. Full eyelets and everything with a "better" (to some) geometry
than the 85 you're looking at. I'm in PDX. Needs a cleaning.

[RBW] Re: One drawback to flippin' your bike for roadside repair.

2015-01-26 Thread John Phillips
You're not scratching your saddle, you're creating beausage, the patina of
love and use!

Or you can strip and spread your shirt down on the ground to spare your
loved one any discomfort.

Bonus points for each 10 degree drop in wind chill below 32F/0C, extra
bonus points if you use your pants!

Demerits if you drag your bike across the ground seat side down, or if you
change the tire in the mud, or a mess of cow patties.

I'd say, "Ready, set go!", but that would be racing.

Re: [RBW] Re: One drawback to flippin' your bike for roadside repair.

2015-01-26 Thread Eric Norris
I carry my tools, tube, etc., rolled up in a piece of canvas. I don’t usually
turn the bike upside down, but if I did I would put the canvas on the ground
under the seat.

Rivendell used to sell canvas squares, but I don’t see them on the web site
now. I bought some old canvas mailbags at the UC Davis surplus store a couple
of years ago, and I’m still well-supplied with great, used canvas.

[RBW] Re: MB2 as budget tourer

2015-01-26 Thread drew beckmeyer
thanks for the advice. unfortunately, dropping $2,000 is not a realistic
option for my budget... though that would be nice. my extra components are
mostly vintage, and would work most easily on another vintage frame anyway.

pudge,
that's good to hear/yours is great looking. i would also albatross it. i
think drop bars would be a scary deal-breaker for her. those pictures may
have just sold me.

tony,
im with you on the budget. unfortunately lm in los angeles and the bike
market is a little inflated. anything of reasonable quality is at least
250$... though occasionally someone has something they know nothing about.
i'd like to stick with a brand i know (miyata, trek, bridgestone,
specialized).

loading up with shopping, so maybe I'm simply past the limit of what a
single bolt can hold...?

Re: [RBW] My QR Fender QR'd

2015-01-26 Thread Bill Lindsay
Steve-buddy

It doesn't look like I do have any photos, but that's easily corrected.

In the meantime, let me describe how it works with Honjos, or any similar
aluminum stayed fender, held with R-clips to your fork tip:

Step 1. remove the R-clips entirely. Put them in your parts drawer
Step 2. Bolt the PDW kit piece into the fork tip eyelet where the R-clip
had been
Step 3. line up your aluminum stay next to the PDW kit and mark where you
need to cut it off
Step 4. Remove the stay entirely
Step 5. Cut the stay at your mark
Step 6. Re-install the stay, sliding the 5mm Aluminum stay into the PDW
kit, kind of trombone-style
Step 7. tighten everything up, including the tiny setscrews on the metal
part of the PDW kit

I'll post flickr pictures late tonight (unless I forget)

[RBW] Re: MB2 as budget tourer

2015-01-26 Thread Tony DeFilippo
For what you're describing I'd be looking to spend less than $150 for the
bike, even if it has components. Put the $150 'savings' into a powdercoat
in the color of her choosing... if she's like my Wife that'll make a huge
impact on the desirability and 'newness' of the bike. But recoating or not
I'd bargain hunt a bit, is your local c-list fairly active? Either that or
check out local bike co-op's as these 80's-90's mtb's are all over the
place.

One other thought about getting it recoated is that you can target a really
'distressed' looking one for even less $ and still come away with a sound,
solid bike.

I picked up a really nicely (rivish build) MB-3 for my wife last year and
it was probably the most used bike by her and guests in the past 6 months.
Her only complaint... the silver paintjob (which is in great shape btw).
Good luck, share some pictures whichever way you end up going!

Tony

You simply don't turn your bike upside down. "Pasadena style --
fuggedabout it."

I don't know about "racer style" -- if I'm doing it, "racer anything"
doesn't enter into it -- but it's no big deal to remove a wheel without
turning the bike upside down. As for an hour's worth of instruction
sort of thing, I've been doing this for over 40 years, long enough to
have gotten it to where I don't need Cliff Notes.

RE: [RBW] MB2 as budget tourer

I have that bike, reworked as a 2-speed city bike.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/6708087263/in/set-72157628383880621/
I paid $225 on CL for it 3 or 4 years ago, and it was in nowhere near as good
condition as the one you’re looking at (judging from the pictures). I love it
– lots of clearance, very pretty, nice relaxed ride (I’m not in the camp that
has issues with the slack geometry and relatively long top tube, but I’m
running mine with Albatross bars, which minimize the long top tube). I believe
the rear spacing is 126, but so what? You can cold set it, or you can probably
fit a 130mm hub in there without modification. But as far as that goes, why
not just overhaul the hubs that are on it, especially if you’re trying to
conserve $$$? The pics suggest either that the bike’s been well cared for, or
it’s been sitting around for 25 years. Either way, the hubs and likely the
whole wheelset ought to be salvageable. The gold ano Araya rims are cool.

But the real expert on all these ‘80s MTBs is Bobby Birmingham on this list.

Just buy the F&F and throw your parts on it. Boom she'll love you for it!

Re: [RBW] Re: MB2 as budget tourer

2015-01-26 Thread Tim Gavin
I second what Chris L said regarding geometry. The repack/klunker geometry
makes for a decent cruiser, but isn't as readily adapted for drops.

More aggressive "NORBA" geometry came a couple years later, around 87-88.
71 head / 74 seat tube angle is characteristic NORBA. My '88 Schwinn KOM
has that geometry and it rides superbly with drop bars and a dirt drop stem.

Unfortunately, those are the same years that the MTB manufacturers decided
to start making welded frames instead of lugs (much easier to update
geometry without the constraint of lugs, I guess), so finding a lugged
frame with better geometry is tough. I'd prioritize the geometry over the
lugs, but I'm lucky that my KOM has both.

And then a few years later, suspension forks (and the requisite geometry)
became the thing, especially for the top-end bikes.

The Trek 9xx "singletrack" series held out as steel and rigid for longer
than many (lugged til '93, TIG after), so keep an eye out for them. All
their catalogs are on http://www.vintage-trek.com/ (along with Fisher and
Klein), so it's usually pretty easy to date those bikes. I'd shoot for
88-89 and newer, rigid fork models.

That also puts you firmly into the 7-speed / 130 mm OLD era (circa about
89).

I had success in converting a 90s TIG-ed Univega Alpina 504 into a drop bar
gravel tourer for my girlfriend. The frame is full DB cro-mo, with good
geometry and tons of clearance. No lugs, but it is purple! She loves how
tough that bike feels without feeling slow.

Cheers,
Tim

[RBW] Redlands Strada Rossa Ride - March 21st

2015-01-26 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
This is not a Rivendell event per se, but it has grown as a direct
extension of the SoCal Riv Rides that have been happening for the last four
years or so. Most everyone on this list would be comfortable and have a
good time here! Not to mention, Rivendell bikes are the perfect all-rounder
type rides for this route! This is the second running of it, and the hope
down the line is to turn it into a known commodity for event rides and
fundraisers, similar to the D2R2. Be part of the early stage so you can
look back fondly and say "I rode that back in 2015!"

Most of the SoCal people that are coming in usually come down for the day.
Out of the area folks have options for motels, but we should be able to
find enough rooms, sofas, or tent space for you to spread out in for the
night. We're hoping to have a Friday night pre-ride party, as well as a
bonus ride in the foothills on Sunday. So really a whole weekend of bike
awesomeness!

It's also what I would consider a family/spouse/SO-friendly event. Riders
that aren't up for the full 100 or 50km can ride with you for the start and
then easily peel off back to town. Those not riding can wander about the
125 year old downtown, walk or ride through quaint Craftsman, Arts and
Crafts, and Victorian neighborhoods, catch a movie in the beautiful
Krikorian theater, browse the Smiley Library, or find a ready stool or
booth to spend the afternoon on. Some combination of the above should
accommodate just about everyone!

After-ride party on Saturday afternoon is family friendly, with a great
vibe permeating it.

Pictures from last year if you don't believe me:

Registration opened up yesterday. The cost is $35 which includes a year's

which normally goes for $25. That's a good
thing, and it goes 100% to getting more people on bikes in Inland Southern
California, and to keeping them safer and happier when they get on them!
This is put together and manned by volunteers, and all the income is going
straight back into the organization.

[RBW] Re: MB2 as budget tourer

2015-01-26 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
The only thing I can add is that the bike you are looking at appears to
have "Repack" geometry which is very slack seat and head angles and a very
long wheelbase. These bikes handle very differently than modern bikes or
even bikes from just a few years later. People seem to either love or hate
that old geometry and it seems that the latter is more common. If you are
trying to entice your fiance into bicycling, a bike with what many consider
to be "wanky" handling might not be the best choice.

OTOH, you may be very familar with the old MTB geometry and already
calculated that into your decision making.

Good luck with whatever you go with.!

RE: [RBW] Re: Tire Pressure Revolution

2015-01-26 Thread Doug Williams
Yes, even the folding Supremes are not THAT supple. But let me say that they
are more supple than many tires out there, they run very nicely. But they
aren't as supple as the Compass tires or their ilk. The strength of the
Schwalbe Marathon Supreme is that it is very flat resistant and tough due to
the Vectran belt. Other tires have flat resistant belts, but they are stiffer,
heavier, and (IMHO) not as tough. In order to get the same flat resistance, you
would have to run a much heavier tire.

So, to sum up...run the Marathon Supreme if you want a flat resistant tire that
doesn't weigh over 600 grams and that is more supple and runs better than most
other tires in the high 300 to low 400 gram range. The Marathon Supreme is my
favorite urban warrior and commuter tire because it is NOT a tank like most
other commuter tires. Don't over inflate it and it will ride comfortably
enough. Quite nicely...really! Just don't expect it to run like a Compass tire,
or Jack Brown Green, (or another thin sidewall, thin tread tire) of the same
width. If you go with the Supreme, my advice is to get the widest you can run
and keep it inflated to as low a pressure as works for your riding. Do that,
and you will be happy.

Doug

[RBW] Re: Tire Pressure Revolution

2015-01-26 Thread Jan Heine
The folding bead is lighter, but it doesn't change the flex of the tire,
since it lies against the (ultra-stiff) rim.

What makes a tire supple is:

1. Casing construction. Finer threads, less rubber, etc., all make the tire
more supple. Puncture-proof belts make it less supple.
2. Tread thickness. Thinner is more supple.
2. How far the tread rubber wraps around the tire. The tread rubber
stiffens the casing, so the less you wrap it around, the more supple the
tire.

Of course, all these factors need to be balanced so that you get a tire
that works in the real world. Different conditions require different
tires...

[RBW] Re: Tire Pressure Revolution

2015-01-26 Thread Jan Heine
There is lots more data - Bicycle Quarterly has published numerous articles
on tire performance:

http://www.bikequarterly.com/BQ_subject_index.html

The "sweet spots" are real – we did a statistical analysis to make sure it
wasn't just noise in the data – but they also depend on the road surface.
So unless you develop a system that allows you to change your tire pressure
as you ride (and somehow determines what the optimum pressure is for the
surface you are riding on), the take-home message is: "Don't stress about
tire pressure."

Re: [RBW] FT - Looking for Noodles and SA saddle

2015-01-26 Thread Jim Bronson
Item BH-5 in the Flickr pics, looks like an Albatross, is that
something you would be interested in trading?

I have a couple of SA saddles, one that was ridden approximately 180
miles on a 600K (at which point I had my Dad go to my house and get my
Brooks and bring it to me) and another that has never been ridden. I
also have a 44cm Noodle bar I'm not using, they're too narrow for me,
I'm using 46 and 48 Noodles on my fleet.

Also - would you be interested in trading the Periscope without the Midge bars?

[RBW] SP SV-8 Dynamo stock status per RBW

2015-01-26 Thread Jim Bronson
In case anyone is interested,

I tried to put an SP SV-8 dynamo hub in my cart this weekend on
rivbike.com and was unable to do so; the site said that the item was
out of stock. I see there are a few other options on the Internet for
vendors, but Riv's price is competitive with them, and I like to order
from Riv as long as it's not way more expensive than other vendors, so
I decided I would call first and see when they would be getting them
back in stock.

So I rang them up and got Miesha on the phone, who on a side note has
a very nice voice. She said the hubs were supposed to come in on Jan
1st but that they have not arrived yet, and that they are hoping to
get them very soon.

Cyclocross vs. Mountain (or Mountain/Expeditiion) production?

Both are about the rarest. I've heard rumors that there were less than 5
produced of the M/E - I had posted that same image of that one on the
undeveloped "Gen1" page -
http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/gen1/#mtnframe

Here's a Cyclocross model:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/cx/2007/cx025-anguslemon0407.html

I know Keven had a Cyclocross Model made as a custom - it was the Root Beer
brown one that I saw him race on a few times - but that was after the
Legolas run, so technically not the early version.

I had posted this list back in 2010 -
http://ramblings.cyclofiend.com/?p=442

John,

I have Marathon Supreme's and they are great tires...very tough and flat
resistant and much lighter than most other tires with the equivalent
toughness and flat resistance. Call it a medium weight tire with heavy
weight toughness. But, no...they are not "considered supple". Not the
stiffest tire out there, but not supple.

Yep, that's the Mystery Bike, also known as HS and Bosco Rubbe (or was it
Rosco Bubbe?). The Appaloosa name is apparently headed to a different bike
which will actually see production.

I didn't see the Appaloosa on your list (or is that technically the
Protovelo "Mystery Bike" you're talking about?). I'm referring to the big,
green bike Keven rides to RBW.

Re: [RBW] FT - Looking for Noodles and SA saddle

2015-01-26 Thread James Warren

Hi Brian,
We met last Summer at the Jamboree. I'm the Jim with the proto-2TT-Hunqapillar
with the same paint as yours.

Any interest in straight up trading the Green Brooks B17 Special for my SA
saddle, brown. We could each ship to each other, and handle our own shipping
costs separately. If the Brooks is still available obviously.
My SA saddle has little use. I'll get a photo this evening to make sure that
any scratches on it from the cupboard are not a deal-breaker.

Thanks!

-Jim W.

Re: [RBW] Re: List of RBW Bikes

2015-01-26 Thread Joe Bernard
I can't believe I missed almost all of the mixtes. I rode a red Wilbury at Riv
HQ, and dearly wish I had taken that baby home.

There's the Mystery Bike, too, which Pudge owns. 9 or 10 were built, which
qualifies it as its own Rivendell model.
