[RBW] A flat? Really?
After about three years, tons of miles and finally some cracks in them, I replaced with Schwalbe Marathons with Soma Xpress tires on the Bleriot, and was treated to a smoother ride. But, about 80 miles into a club ride http://ridewithgps.com/routes/8050062 yesterday, I noticed my front tire was getting squishy and had a slow leak. That's the first one of those in several years! Thankfully, I remembered what to do, following the Scout motto, being prepared. I really like the Sugino cranks, so I'll be happy have one on the Bike Friday. It gives me yet another bit of common kit between the Bike Friday and the Hillbornes, sort of a spare part bin. I've already set up the Bike Friday to be like the Hillbornes in several ways: B17 saddle, Bosco-like bars (narrower) with bar-ends-on-thumbies, grip king pedals, schmidt dynamo lighting, nitto F-15, NR-50, and pannier rack... things on the way include love levers, motolites, and the sugino crank. if there were a way to add a double-top-tube I'd probably do it just to finish it off! It'll never ride exactly like the Hillbornes. I don't know how I'd fake the extra rotational inertia or narrower tires or controlled-ness (my Friday's stem riser does move about a bit). But it's already close enough to be the second most comfortable bike I've ever ridden. And, unlike the Hillbornes, I can take it on the train in rush hour, put it in my car quite easily, or travel with it on megabus. Now I'll never be without a multi-mile-capable super-comfortable bike! I set up a 36-48-58 set on a 110/74 crankset, in my case a Suntour XC Pro. Using the Sheldon Brown online gear calculator, this gave me a match to my standard bikes setup. TA sells (or sold, haven't checked recently) a 36 tooth 74 bcd ring; the largest you can fit on that bolt pattern, I understand. I paired it with a Shimano SG-X outer 48t, the one one they sold on their 110/74 MTB setups in the 90s. The new outer is a Sugino flat 58 tooth ring. Using bar end shifters, and Shimano 9-speed chain, if all shifts very well with a Campagnolo triple front derailleur. I'm using the version they sold for their 10-tooth jump 30-40-50 cranksets. I've found these particular fronts to be really versatile, they seem to work a little better under load and over a broad range than Shimano's road front triples. I think any good ramped outer from Shimano, better yet a TA Zephyr, will make a good middle ring. It's doing essentially the same job in the middle, picking up and dropping the chain to the smaller ring next to it. The question will be whether you are satisfied with a flat outer ring. Has anyone used the 46T Origin-8 chainring sold by RBW (or one like it) in the middle position on the RBW-sold Sugino crank (or one like it)? Any comments on how well it works or worked? If you got it to work well enough for you, was there anything non-obvious that you had to do to make that happen? So here's the deal: I have three bikes, two Hillbornes and a Bike Friday (406BSD wheels). The Hillbornes have the triple Sugino cranks sold by RBW. The Bike Friday came with a 130BCD triple crank, 52T/42T/30T. I got rid of the 52T chainring because I never used it; higher than I want in general. Replacing the 42T middle chainring with a 44T was an improvement in the overall gearing on the Bike Friday and leads me to want to try a 46T. However, as another goal I'd like to have the same Sugino 110BCD crank on all three bikes. My question above arises because I don't see any 46T-or-greater 110BCD chainring on the web sold as a middle ring. Some, including the 46T 110BCD Origin-8 chainring sold by RBW, are not described as being either explicitly inner, middle, or outer. I note that RBW's web-site says that its 44T chainring can be used as either a middle or an outer; it does *not* say that for the 46T. With respect to a given 110BCD chainring that is sold as a middle vs outer ring for a triple crank, what about the chainring makes it that way (instead of being position-agnostic)? In case it matters to potential respondents... the Hillbornes have 7-speed clusters in the back and the Bike Friday has an 8-speed cluster. Also, I'm uninterested in 9-speed unless I'm forced by product availability to go that way. Fortunately I have predicted the demise of less-than-9-speed drivetrains, thus making it very likely that

[RBW] CNC milled A.T. Fender Dynamo Taillight available to the public
As some of you already know if you follow my flickr stream https://www.flickr.com/photos/7516215@N03/, frame builder Tom Matchak https://www.flickr.com/photos/34156114@N05/ and I collaborated in the development of a threadless stem switch for controlling dynamo lighting systems. This turned into development of a growing line of generator-lighting based components and accessories, some co-developed by me and Tom, and some by either of us alone. These will be manufactured in small batches. We will be starting a web store to sell these under the brand Velo Lumino, but will be waiting until the stem switch is ready before the official web launch. I will also be offering the same installation hardware items that I use on my own installations in response. While we wait for the official web launch, I have my first batch of my first component ready to offer: the AT fender taillight. Available in raw machined and high polished finish (see below, installed on 54mm/650B and 43mm/700C fenders, respectively). https://farm1.staticflickr.com/514/18801246860_12625e5e1d_b.jpg https://farm1.staticflickr.com/348/18988912645_830f082261_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3769/18643304069_00a3eda343_b.jpg Full description and pricing below: *The AT fender taillight is a classically inspired generator-driven fender taillight made from CNC milled aluminum with state of the art electronics. The idea for this light came from the lack of attractive yet durable, high-quality taillights worthy of fine custom-built bicycles. There are plenty of taillights on the market, but they are all made from plastic, and often crack from getting hit in their vulnerable location.* *The AT fender taillight features the excellent Busch Müller Seculite Plus circuitry with bright red LED emitter, voltage regulation (meaning it won't burn out if powered without a headlight) and powerful standlight (illuminates at full brightness for four minutes after stopping). The housing is compact, elegantly shaped from CNC-milled aluminum, and available in either raw machined or mirror-polished finish (see photos above). The LED lens is also a reflector, so the taillight meets legal requirements -- most state bicycle laws require a rear-facing red reflector. The lens extends slightly past the rear edge of the housing to provide side illumination.* *Installs with a single M6 nut. Compatible with metal and plastic fenders. Easy one-wire hookup (for plastic fenders, see below). Comes with enough wire for a full frame run and all necessary hardware. The wire meets military aircraft specification, abrasion resistant and super thin, which makes it suitable for routing through tight spaces like the fender's rolled edge and inside the bottom bracket shell.* *The AT fender taillight is 100% waterproof (and in fact can be submerged underwater), has been tested to withstand the harshest environments, and is easy to install. And despite being milled from a solid piece of aluminum, it weighs only 50g; that's 1.5g lighter than a stock BM Seculite Plus with plastic housing.* *If installing on a plastic fender, a grounding strip is needed to connect between the mounting stud and the nearest metal-to-frame contact.* *Made in USA. 3 year warranty.* *Polished finish: $119 USD* *Machined finish: $109 USD* *Grounding strip for non-metal fenders: $6 USD* *Shipping: $8 USD CONUS; inquire for quote for international shipping* Payment by paypal. constant on is the German safety standard, which also requires head and tail lights. Therefore, Germany is one of the biggest dynamo light markets, and therefore most tail lights are constant on. Dunno if you could make a contant on dyno tail light blink. I'm sure you could, if you can do some custom electrical engineering. But I doubt it could be done simply. Is there some technical limitation, or is constant on just the way it's always been done? I would vote for a dynamo powered taillight that could be switched from constant on to blinky. Re: [RBW] Dynamo Taillights
Also, from what I've read, the German regulation exists because it is thought that blinking lights mesmerize drunk drivers, causing what I guess would be called target fixation. The main benefit (in my mind) of a blinking light is that it saves some battery, which is of course not an issue with a dynamo light. The Busch Mueller 'Toplight Line Plus' light is a fantastic dynamo taillight and I doubt there's anything that provides better visibility. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Dynamo Taillights
Mike, I agree with you re the Toplight Line Plus. But they just came out with a new version, that pulses http://harriscyclery.net/itemdetails.cfm?ID=3633! Reid, this may be just the ticket. It's a bit more expensive, but seems to offer some sort of flash, at least when you slow down.
