[RBW] FS: You want a Clem frameset, but it has to be EVEN CHEAPER!!

2015-06-24 Thread Bill Lindsay
You've all seen my Clem-ish build on a 1980s Schwinn mountain bike:

CLEMISH
https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/17663099654/in/dateposted-public/

Some of you wanted to buy a Clem Frameset, but delayed, because it was
still $700, and now are full of regret and self-loathing that you didn't
act, and you are kind of on the fence about buying a full Clem. You have
80% of the parts and just want a decent Clemish frameset.

Well, maybe I have what you need. I did a bunch of volunteer work for the
Elementary School Re-Cycle event. One of the bikes that didn't make it
through my workstation and didn't get sold is a red 22 1987 Schwinn
Sierra. A lot of the parts were toast, and I didn't pull together a full
build for it. Here's a scan of the Schwinn 1987 catalog

SIERRA
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m130/ratrodbikes/87%20Sierra/87catalog.jpg

This one is red. Fit wise, you need to be in the 5'10 to 6'1 range. I
think it would be great with a set of Boscos. I'd like to request a $100
Donation to the Harding Elementary School PTA for the frame+fork+headset.
Or I can pull together a partial build list for not much more. Local
pickup in El Cerrito is preferred, but we can talk. I'm serious about the
donation. Write it off your taxes. I can get you a receipt for your
donation. I'm not looking to make a cent on this, but will be happy to
move this frameset onto a happier next-chapter. Let me know if you are
interested. I'll take a couple photos and reply to this post as a bump.

I am glad someone brought up group riding.

Without castigating those who ride with blinking rear lights, I will say
that on group rides such as brevets where there is extended nighttime
riding, such blinking taillights are not acceptable. They are very
annoying, and can even be dangerous to some.
When it's hard to stay awake in the middle of the night, a blinking light
can have a hypnotic effect.
I won't ride with such cyclists that have these.

But I expect few on this list do extended nighttime group riding.

So I go with both; I sometimes add a red blinky light for added

I hope someone out there can chime in...I was at their global center today.
Had they had the durable cotton shorts in dark grey with a 33 waist I'd
have bought them. Apparently, dark grey is super popular and 33 waist a
common size.

Even though I was there I didn't get a confident feeling the originals
would dry quickly dispite the lackluster assurance from the lovely young
lady helping me.

Word is they won't have the dark grey durable in for a long time.

Incidentally, there was a beautiful grey cat with yellow eyes lurking

These are their cigarette shorts so their tight fitting, not lycra tight
but still snug. They have two types in this model the cotton twill fabric
with a small amount of lycra for stretch and their new fabric called
durable cotton which has cotton, nylon (durable) and some lycra for stretch
and I think a coating for wind and water resistance.

What I'd really like to know is whether the first fabric model (which is
incidentally the older model) after a long day in the saddle will dry out?
Usually after a long day I'll change into some knickers around camp to give
the shorts time to air out and dry.

Do they soften up after washing and are they too heavy for hot Summer
rides...their Web site states they're for Spring Summer? But they seem
very thick especially as opposed to their other specific lightweight
 shorts.

 Your feedback is appreciated.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tire trouble puzzlement

2015-06-24 Thread Michael Hechmer
After many hours of effort I'm not sure I'm closer to solving this problem.
And I'm no longer sure it's 100% a rim problem.

A careful examination of the new pari-moto front tire on my Trek revealed
that the colored line that I was advised to keep constant around the rim
was itself not a constant distance from the bead. At a point about 90
degrees from the label, near the inflation label, it dived to near zero.
After a couple of tries at centering it and retesting (I live 3 miles
from pavement so this was a bit arduous and time consuming) I identified a
tiny ridge running parallel to the bead and also that this ridge was level
with the rim on the two wheels that seem to be working OK. I took a pen
and inked a line at the top of that ridge, then I mounted the tire by first
exposing the ink line and then pushing it slightly in.The second try of
this quieted the tire about 80 - 90 %, which was enough to allow me to
perceive the thumping in the rear tire. I then ran a test on two bikes
with all but one of the permutations of wheels of wheels bikes. (I
couldn't put the Saluki rear wheel with a 135mm Deore onto the Treks 130
mm drop outs but I could convert the 130 mm White to 135 and put them on
the Saluki). At the end of this I realized three things. Both the front
and rear tires on the Deore/Synergy rims were basically Ok; both front and
rear on the White/Synergy rims were misaligned; the rear tire on the
White/Synergy wheel also showed a half inch slice in the side wall, right
at the rim.

I think the next up is replacing the rim tape on the White/Synergy wheels
with HB tape, if I fin I have enough and it will fit. I am also
considering replacing the pari-motos on the Saluki (even though they are
fine) with Compass 41 mm tires and then replacing the worn rear tire on the
Trek keeping the other as a spare.

Up till this I have really liked the pari-motos. Living out in the country
I don't encounter a lot of debris, just a lot of rough roads and these
tires have been great for me.

[RBW] Re: Quickie Velogical Review

2015-06-24 Thread Andrew Marchant-Shapiro
They work well and are a nice alternative if you want to avoid
modifying/dedicating a front wheel. Nevertheless, keep in mind that there
are a number of dynohubs that are per se less expensive, and only
marginally more expensive if you build your own wheel. Further, be aware
that the Velogical unit, IME, puts out less than 3W. Plenty for most LED
systems, but it *is* less powerful than a dynohub.

The new frame has a dynamo braze on but you can buy the Velogical with
bolt on mounts. As this builder picture
 https://www.flickr.com/photos/57976152@N07/17343953555/ shows, the
Velogical tucks neatly under the Honjo H-35 fenders. There is a simple
wire lever that either locks the dynamo on to the wheel or off.

Lights are Lumotec EYC and Secula - you can see the latter in the linked
picture. Velogical instantly powered both. Even at low speed the lighting
is as bright as I could ever need in the city. Engaged it makes a little
noise - not enough to annoy me - coasting the TT White Industry freewheel
is louder I imagine there has to be drag, but nothing I notice. It has
been pretty wet here in Chicago the last few days (weeks really). I
deliberately rode through puddles. Velogical did not seem to slip any. I
hope to take the bike on some short tours away from city lights soon.
Frankly the lighting appears bright enough that I do not expect any
 problems.

I have a SON hub on my tour bike and had one on my previous commuter.
They are definitely great power generators. Velogical is somewhat less
expensive, lighter, and allows use of whatever front hub you want. Time
will tell whether these little dynamos are durable. At this point it
definitely appears to be a viable alternative to generator hubs for some
 uses.

I'll also be bringing my scrapes. I think I was going too slowly-- my
front wheel washed out. Ay ay ay, I don't like to go fast on steep

 http://swrve.myshopify.com/products/mens-cigarette-shorts?variant=126704252

Quick update, set up SKS P50 fenders with 650bx42 Paselas, while waiting for the RnR's to come in.Looks like there's more fender room. About 8mm or so. I'll be able to fit P55's and maybe even P60's to give more lateral clearance. The vertical clearance might get in the way though. In the meantime, trying to decide if I should go Nitto RM-013 or AlbatrossHave both cockpits ready to go.

I leave for Banff Saturday, and start toward the Mexican border July 1. In case
you feel like following my progress, my GPS breadcrumb trail will be here:
https://share.delorme.com/AnnePaulson

Riv content: I'm bringing wooly garments, my Rivendell-purchased Trangia, and
my Just Ride attitude.

On my next-to-last pre-Divide dirt ride, I crashed on a downhill, so I'll also
be bringing my scrapes. I think I was going too slowly-- my front wheel washed
out. Ay ay ay, I don't like to go fast on steep loose downhills, but I probably
would have been better off speeding up on that one. Fortunately, most of the
Divide is much less steep that the stuff I ride around here.

On the Krampus? Please report in excruciating detail. And good luck. We
suburban short ride types salute you.

When I read about the Krampus I want to abandon my thought of a 29er-type
Ravn and buy a fatbike or similar.

Riv content: I'm bringing wooly garments, my Rivendell-purchased
Trangia, and my Just Ride attitude.

On my next-to-last pre-Divide dirt ride, I crashed on a downhill, so
I'll also be bringing my scrapes. I think I was going too slowly-- my
front wheel washed out. Ay ay ay, I don't like to go fast on steep
loose downhills, but I probably would have been better off speeding up
on that one. Fortunately, most of the Divide is much less steep that
the stuff I ride around here.
