Thank you posting the link, I really enjoyed reading through the story and

I'd love to try out the Switchback Hills on my Sam but have to wear my

willing to spring for them.

Please post pictures (and possibly actual measurements) anyone who mounts

I love mine too. I use it for Rando riding. I stuff it full of my powders
and Payday bars along with a spare tire, spare tubes, spare lights and
batteries and lastly tools. Oh and depending on time of year, clothes as
well for cooler temps.

It's pretty heavy at the start of the ride but as I eat more and drink more
it gets lighter ;)

The bright green long chainstay bike was one of the original series of
"mystery bike" protos, that Rivendell had Nobilette build as a test
bed/demo bike for the concept and was in their showroom for a while before
selling it. I had the pleasure of riding it then, and it sold me on the
concept of upright bars for all kinds of riding, and the awesomeness of
Bosco bars. I happen to know that it currently belongs to Riv/ SF Bay Area

[RBW] Re: Tested 6 pairs of 700c (29in) tires - results and impressions

2015-09-03 Thread Deacon Patrick
Amazing, Takashi!

As most here know, my go to tires are: Thunder Burt for my Hunqapillar;
Barlow Pass for my Quickbeam. I think you are on to something when you
mention that heat could have been a factor with your Barlow Pass ride. I
don't track speed, time, distance, etc., but hot rides are sure a LOT
longer feeling than the same ride on a cool day. Throw in subtle
differences in wind and/or precipitation, and even how you are feeling that
ride -- It would take a lot of riders and/or very controled testing in real
world circumstances to attempt to quiet down the "noise" in the data. To
me, your ride impression notes are the most meaningful data you collected.
Of the tires I've ridden, I concur with your assessment. Thank you for
sharing this fantastic pile of personal experience with the tires!

With abandon,
Patrick

Thanks for this; very interesting to see that the first 3 on the list are
close, and that the F Fred is fastest. I can see how th FFs would be
chancey on graveled roads, but fortunately my roads are sandy. I do notice
how they roll very nicely on pavement, even at ~18/22.

I'll be interested to learn of any further test data.

[RBW] Re: Speak to me about front loading and rear loading

2015-09-03 Thread Brian Campbell
Timely thread. I recently took the Mark's rack, large Acorn handle bar bag
and headlight off of my AHH. I shifted the load to as saddle mounted bag
(Sackville medium), mounted the headlight on the front fender and the
change has been fantastic. I feel that the bike is performing more in line
with it's design, quicker steering, better balance in corners and an over
"spritely-ness" that was missing previously.

Who's to say what riders need and what they don't? To each his own. I
like 9 speed 11-34 and wouldn't mind going 10 or even 11 to narrow some of
the bigger gaps between gears.

OBTW,
1975 called and they want their freewheel back. ;)

Just went on a 12 mile ride. Went fine. I"m alive ;). I liked the ride a
lot actually. Definitely felt a *little* taller. Handling was fine. A tad
squirrerly. Kind of reminded me of my issue with the Big Bens on my 26"
rims earlier this year that I posted about. I'll give it a few weeks, but
if this works I think the 650b wheels with babyshoe pass tires is a nice
alternative to my 26" wheels w/ smart sams (even given the hassle of brake
pad adjustment). Certainly makes me feel a little better about selling my
Sam.

[RBW] Tested 6 pairs of 700c (29in) tires - results and impressions

2015-09-03 Thread Takashi

I tested various 700c (29-inch) tires on a same route to see how they
perform, and I thought I'd share the results here.

Please note that this is not a detailed study, as I rode only once with
each pair.
Climate conditions as well as my body condition differed from one day to
another, so that might have affected results.

*THE TIRES:*
The tires I tested are following 6 pairs:

Maxxis CrossMark 29x2.1 (52/52-622) 60TPI, single compound
Schwalbe Thunder Burt 29x2.10 (54-622) RaceGuard
Schwalbe Furious Fred 29x2.00 (50-622)
Bruce Gordon Rock-n-Road 700x43 (43-622)
Schwalbe Marathon Mondial 700x40 (42-622) Performance Line, wired
Compass Barlow Pass 700x38 (38-622) standard casing

*THE ROUTE:*
The route is 20.4 kilometers (12.7 miles) long, which consists of 4
portions:
Portion 1: paved; 7.6km (4.7mi); 271m (889ft) ascent; 91m (298ft) descent
Portion 2: dirt/gravel; 2.6km (1.6mi); 210m (689ft) ascent; no descent
Portion 3: dirt/gravel; 5.4km (3.4mi); no ascent; 406m (1332ft) descent
Portion 4: paved; 4.8km (3.0mi); 74m (243ft) ascent; 79m (259ft) descent

*RESULTS:*
Please see the attached chart for the results.

*IMPRESSIONS:*

*Cross Mark (15psi front, 25psi rear)*
It felt a bit sluggish when climbing.
Rear wheel sometimes slipped in portion 2.
Difficulty when descending in portion 3 as rear wheel sometimes skidded,
but looking at GPS data, these were fastest, so maybe it wasn't bad.

*Thunder Burt (20psi front, 30psi rear)*
I recall that someone wrote about these tires as "smooth as butter," and I
absolutely agree. Very smooth both on pavement and on gravel. Also they
felt less sluggish than Cross Marks, thus easier to climb.
It was easier to handle on gravel than Cross Marks, though rear wheel
slipped a bit in portion 2.
Also I felt them easier to handle in portion 3.
By the way, I always took brief rests (a few minutes) between portions.
Looking at GPS data, I noticed that my rest was shorter when testing
Thunder Burts and Furious Freds. I guess their smoothness or
non-sluggishness made me less tired, thus requiring shorter break.
(It's possible that it was due to climate conditions, not tires.)
I put TBs on my Hunq when I went touring this August, and they served very
well.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/albums/72157655035690913

Furious Fred (22psi front, 30psi rear)
Least sluggish among tires I tested, and indeed very fast when climbing.
As I wrote above, I needed shorter break between portions.
I did not notice slipping in portion 2, easy to handle in portion 3.
So I liked them very much, but on another day when I rode unpaved road with
these tires, I found a few cuts on the tread (not sidewall). Schwalbe
website suggests that they are fragile, and indeed they are.
I am reluctant to use them for long-distance ride when the route includes
unpaved roads.

Rock n Road (30psi front, 38psi rear)
They feel relatively smooth both on pavement and dirt, but extremely
sluggish when climbing.
I had to resort to lower gears with these tires than with other tires.
Handling was fine in portions 2 and 3, but harder to handle than fatter
tires.

Marathon Mondial (30psi front, 38psi rear)
Felt less sluggish than RnR.
Among tires I tested, these felt hardest to handle on gravel road.
So I was surprised when I checked GPS data to find that these performed
pretty well in portions 2 and 3.
I have always thought that these are "slow" tires, so I have not used them
often, but I will have to change my mind and use them more often to see how
they perform.

Barlow Pass (38psi front, 42psi rear)
Before the test, I expected these to be fastest, especially when climbing
paved road, but I was wrong.
Compared to Furious Freds, Barlow Pass felt slow, and I felt more tired.
(Maybe because it was a hot day when I tested these.)
In portions 2 and 3, I felt them difficult to handle. Felt easier than
Marathons, but slower actually.
Extralight ones might be faster, but I guess that they are as fragile as
Furious Freds.

I also installed the Rat Trap Pass Normal version (non-EL) on my 56cm
Atlantis today. This is the only bike I have that has a second wheel set. I
rarely use this feature though.

The other wheel set has Big Bens and this wheel set had 2.0" Kojaks.
Hopefully the Rat Trap will combine the benefits of both. I didn't manage
to get a ride in though.

Measurements at 36psi on 22.5mm rims:

Kojak = 44.5mm

Rat Trap Pass = 50mm (1hr after mounting)

Big Ben = 53mm

The Rat Trap were also about 5mm taller than the Kojak

I forgot to mention the Big Bens were of the 2.15" variety.

Since we are on the RBW list, I thought I would mention that supple wall
tires are not "Riv approved". The folks at Riv HQ prefer more durable
tires. To redeem myself to the Riv Gods I'll be keeping the Big Bens on the
other wheel set for situations where more durability and a bit more
traction is desired.

A couple pictures of the RTP clearances:

I don't know how wide you want to go, but my 56 cm Wilbury has no problem
running 650B x 42 Hetre tires, even with fenders. However, I'm not sure
I'll go wider than that, as the lateral clearance on the third set of stays
(the "neither-chain-nor-seat-stay") is getting pretty tight with the
42-section Hetre tires.

[RBW] WTT: Selle Anatomica for Brooks B67

2015-09-03 Thread Avery Wilson
Hey there group! I've got a used Selle Anatomica Titanico saddle in RED, which
everyone knows... Red saddles make you faster. SA saddle is nice but not in
perfect cosmetic condition. Got about 2/3 of the tensioning screw left. Also,
when you wear out the leather, SA will re-leather it for $65 in whatever color
you want.

Want to try out a wide, sprung Brooks saddle after switching to Bosco bars. I
was a little taken aback by how much more pressure the upright bars place on my
backside, and wanting to give the big Brooks a try.

Basically I'm thinking this trade would allow both of us to try a new saddle
without having to buy new.

Pm me if ya like, and I'll send pictures.

[RBW] Re: WTB - Set of Paul Touring Cantilever Brakes (Silver) - Front & Rear

2015-09-03 Thread Garth
Tedious ? (laughing) What the heck does this infer ? C'mon .
we're talking shopping here . Pick any retailer and ask a hundred people
, everyone is convinced that THEIR experience is the ONLY experience ! "I
know best, this is how it was and will always be." .. or something like
that .

How silly we all are !

Steve, if I told you the best place to find them you wouldn't believe me
anyways . The most simple answer seems the most impossible sometimes.

Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: Sample Appaloosa is pretty sweet

2015-09-03 Thread Garth
Yeah Leisl , of all the Riv frames I must say your design is the absolute
coolest ! *Truly long and low with style* !

I cannot see either why the next production frame will not have the 50cm+
chainstays, given the talk-up in the blug saying essentially "there's no
reason why not to" ! Seeing that prototype's are just what they are ,
"test" frames , I take the "sam-like" test frame for sale as just that , a
tester , but as such is ever subject to change. Not final. It may be well
decided to go with the long chainstays for the next frame and for whatever
reason it was time to put up the "sam-like" frame for sale.
