[RBW] All arounder Handlebar recommendations GO!

2015-10-15 Thread Michael Rivers

VO Tourist on the left, Nitto Noodle on the right. Both very comfortable.
Silver goes a bit faster than the blue so I picked handlebars to match.

No experience with the bar, but while looking over the JonesBike site for
what's new, I noticed there is now a swept flat bar offering
among the H-bars. (about half way down)

[RBW] Re: Sources for wood fenders, particularly bamboo

2015-10-15 Thread Takashi
I have bought 4 pairs of wooden fenders from Cody.
I bought the first pair in April 2011.
It looks like compound curved fenders tend to twist a little bit after a
few years.
Other than that, they are still working fine though I've never done any
waxing/varnishing.

Other wooden fender manufacturers I know of are:
Sykes
(http://www.sykeswoodfenders.com/sykeswoodfenders/sykeswoodfenders.html)
Anderson (http://creativeopenings.com/CO_Fenders/woodfenders.htm)

I haven't used their products, so I don't know whether they are good or not.

[RBW] Clem Geometry

2015-10-15 Thread Edwin W
I was trying to see what the effective top tube lengths are for the Clems.
I am getting a small frame for my boys to grow into and was trying to
figure out what kind of stem/bar to get.

I could wait until it arrives, but that would leave me nothing to do in the
meantime!

Was there ever a chart posted?

I can call if not.

+1 to trying the Albatross flipped over, since you have it at least. I'd
been wanting to do this with the Soma Oxford (pretty close copy of
Albatross) bar I have on a lock-up commuter. I shortened the Oxfords by
about 1-1/2" on each side. Tried it out on my ride home yesterday,
definitely more aggressive, making the grip are below saddle - mine were
slightly above in the 'correct' orientation. Not sure if I'll keep them
this way or not. I have a threadless quill adapter and appropriate length
stem, might buy some hinged brake levers so I can flip them back/forth
easily.

In case you were wondering, here's pictures of a San Marcos that is for

I think it's pretty neat, but I guess to the rest of the world it's too
heavy/too expensive/too much trail/too stiff/doesn't have paul racer
mounts/chainstays too long/doesn't have thru axles/doesn't take press fit
bearings ect. Anyway, if you want one you probably better jump on it, cause
they really don't sell well enough to justify their existence. Anyway,
Public bikes come with matching fenders, so that's a neat feature.

[RBW] Re: All arounder Handlebar recommendations GO!

2015-10-15 Thread Surlyprof
After selling dedicated road bike and mtb, I only own a Hillborne now. I also
tried flipping my albatross bars to save some money. Found the drop was too
far among other problems. Sucked it up on the cost of a whole new cockpit and
bought the albastache. I've never been happier with any other set up. They
give a nice amount of reach for going fast-ish and enough upright position to
relax the neck and back while meandering. The albastache on my Hillborne feels
about as all arounder as I can get. Seems to handle both roads and trails
equally well.

Thanks for the thought. I like to think we inspire one another. The last
photo was shot by my touring bud Peppermint Patty (she really does look
like the Peanuts character) and she did a great job of making a minor bump
look epic. But then she started in Canada several weeks ago so had lots of
practice at picking the spots for the great shots.

[RBW] FS: 56 Blue Rambouillet f/f/hs/bb (and potential 650b build)

2015-10-15 Thread allenmichael
You can see my intentions from the photos. I have an orange 58 Rambouillet,
but I was going to experiment with building up a 56 with a nice pair of
650b wheels (synergy rims, red SON dynamo front, red Chris King rear, red
Hetres). I thought the red and blue worked well together.

Alas, I haven't even been riding the 58 much at all. I'm mostly commuting,
and the Simple One is hard to beat for this purpose.

I'm trying to sell the frame for $700 (plus actual cost if it needs to be
shipped). Here is a Portland, Oregon Craigslist
link: http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/bik/5269855278.html

These are gorgeous frames, and they ride exceptionally well.

Dreaming—I would love to find someone local who wants the wheelset and the
frame and even some of the other build parts. If you are interested, please
let me know.

Re: [RBW] Re: C in October

2015-10-15 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I haven't purposely taken a slightly extended period of time to give thanks
and comment on Chris' visit and great ride on the C, life jut managed to
pick up at it's occasional breakneck pace as soon as I returned to reality.
Some other folks who joined in part of the ride on day one, or the first
overnight, like I did, have already let you all know that it was a
beautiful day amongst great company. Most folks took far more and much
better pictures than I did as well. I guess I have a little something else
to share about the day...

Life's thrown me a few knuckleballs over the past several years. I spent
three or so of the last five or so years helping my mother through a
terrible cancer fight. We made it through one round but she didn't survive
round two. I've spent the past two years getting things right with myself
since that fight.

I found that being out in the world, away from the cacophony of my general
urban surroundings, perched on a bike, rolling through the landscape, has
been phenomenal "therapy." I've focused most of my riding on solo
excursions, be it commuting, weekend adventuring or just riding around.
Just this past year I've opened myself up more to the idea of finding some
folks who like to ride the way I like to ride (which appears to be the way
most of you like to ride), and, well, going for rides with them. As a
lifelong introvert, I'm not always comfortable with a bunch of new people,
and as a reforming solo bike rider, I barely know how to ride along with
other folks. This is where Chris and local DC Metro area Riv-folk come in...

I kinda set out on this trip last week cognizant that it was Chris' ride. I
was happy for the invite to join in, but I didn't want to make it my ride.
Combine that with the introverted tendencies, and I thought I might just
participate a bit, maybe hang back and certainly enjoy the day on the C
A few friends and strangers just picked up on a common interest and good
things happened. There wasn't really a non-participatory option, and this
was a good thing.

Some days you just go out for a bike ride, and that's all it is, just a
human-mechanical interface event. Hop on, body moves, bike moves, hop off.
Other times, it's not just a bike ride, it's a bigger thing. Could be a
faith-restoring event even. Faith in what? Doesn't matter. Sound crazy?
Maybe it is.

I made my way solo back to DC on day two. I started the trek feeling light,
energized, full.

There's good people out there. Sometimes you meet 'em on a bike.

Chris, Steve, Carey (and Tom, Tony, Ken, the other Steve, the other Steve?,
Mary) it was a pleasure to meet you, on a bike. Thanks for letting me in on
your more-than-just-a-ride.

drew, I've set my Map bar up with just 2 hand positions, but there's a mid

right. It's a much more secure feeling than leaning on the hoods of my

Hugh, thanks for the kind words. I've got the first three days of photos now
up on Flickr, and day four will be uploaded soon.

Jeff, your comments resonate. As a classic introvert who needs more solo time

Texas. So when there is a chance to geek out with folks having a common
interest, it is special. Your presence enriched our trip, and I hope you and

Now that I'm back home, it's time for me to turn my attention to the Seventh

each year from my house. Saturday, November 14. Y'all come on down!

Re: [RBW] Re: Laid off and in a Quandary

2015-10-15 Thread Patrick Moore
Years ago I used to be sent around the country to do "ethics interviews" of
upper down to mid level management -- actually, down to field supervisors
in some cases -- pursuant to performing an "ethics audit" of the
organization. (I was the "associate consultant" who provided the data to
the full consultants.)

We worked with leading F 500 and even 200 companies as well as professional
organizations.

My view of the disconnect between the C's and Directors and VPs and the
lower levels was very striking; also striking was the forlorn confusion
among the lower ranks from the orders to be "ethical" -- in one company a
mgr was fired on the "no thieving" rule because he took somebody's Sprite
from the refrigerator -- and the much more important rule to get more done
and make more sales while cutting costs and resources. It's the damned
system!

At any rate, I swore I'd never do their jobs, and so far I've more or less
managed to keep this promise, with results for my wages.

I work with many very intelligent and personable clients, mid to upper
level (say, functional VPs and regional and country Directors; C's from
smaller and mid size orgs) and what strikes me is how much their identity
is bound up with their jobs, and how much -- incredibly much! -- energy and
time they spend on things that make for success, look good in Business
Week, but that have my eyes glazing when I have to read about it. As they
say those who can, do; those who can't, write resumes.

(OTOH again, I do have interesting clients doing interesting things besides
managing the $XXB capital budget for power infrastructure and what have
you; entrepreneurs and solo professionals.)

Point of this self indulgent ramble: man, if you can earn even a modest
living doing what you like, and what you like is something truly humanly
useful, you are so far ahead of the game that little else counts!

Take a look at the VO Casey's Crazy Bar:

That would be a challenge for a Riv. There are open face quill stems on

I don't recall Riv ever selling an open face quill stem.

[RBW] Re: All arounder Handlebar recommendations GO!

2015-10-15 Thread drew
Great info!
flipped albatross didnt work so well for me when i tried it a couple of
years ago. i kind of like the look, but the positioning never felt good for
me. the vo crazy bar is too crazy, too wild.

so i think im down to the map/ahearne/jones/pope style bars or noodleish
drop bars.

leaning slightly to jones/ahearne. so questions about that style of bar:
how many hand positions will i realistically get? how are they for
climbing? one main complaint i have about the albatross bars is that i
never really feel comfortable on long, sit down climbs. the position doesnt
really allow a satisfactory lean/weight distribution in that setting, and
my arms end up changing position every couple of minutes.

[RBW] Frederick MD Fall Country Rides w/ Cues: Off the beaten path

2015-10-15 Thread Gravel & Grind Espresso + Bikes
We’ve written up 3 great fall rides on our journal which might be of
interest to DC/MD area Riv riders. A bunch of Riv riders recently did one
of our s24o trips we wrote about, and dug it, so I figured this might be
good reading as well. There’s a coffee outside ride, a winery ride, and a
big epic ride from Frederick City to the PA border. From the article on
our journal: Fall is the most fleeting of seasons. It’s burst of color a
final explosion before the land plunges into a world of abbreviated days,
muted grays and biting winds. Don’t spend it inside, eating bonbons and
drinking pumpkin flavored coffee. We’ve compiled three local rides that
start in the city o’ Frederick and head out into the country. They are not
your typical rides, and they avoid the main roads that Frederick cyclists
use. Less traffic, more scenery. Some of ‘em have pretty big hills. For
all of them, we recommend a roadish bike with fat tires and low gears.
Here’s the link: http://gravelandgrind.com/frederick-forgotten-explore/

2015-10-15 Thread Mark Wilkins
I just rebuilt my wife's Atlantis with Bosco bars. Cromo, Tektro levers,
Sunrace thumbies, multicolor Newbaum's.

The "grips" are brown cotton tape over a layer of cork tape.

She likes it over the Albatross, cork grips, vintage Dia-Compe levers, and
shimano bar ends that used to be on the bike

[RBW] Re: The Tao of the Bosco Bar

2015-10-15 Thread Jeremy Till
Here's a couple of mine, they are my current all-time favorite bar:

https://flic.kr/p/z3uwFM
https://flic.kr/p/pgoF44

58cm HT aluminum boscos, cheapo (think they're Origin8) adjustable cable
pull levers (I like 'em slightly more forward than Grant), Shimano 9spd
bar-end shifters, Oury grips with the flange end cut off. Derailleur
cables run along grooves provided by the Oury grips, never feel like
they're in the way. I've got 2 or 3 good hand positions that all have
brake lever access and a couple more without.

If I were doing a more off-road specific build I might think about thumbies
to remove the perhaps theoretical risk of pokey things at the ends of the
bars, but for mostly road/touring/commuting/fire roads like my trucker sees
I love the bar ends.

Thanks Hugh!

Whenever you make your trip we'll roll out the welcome wagon for you and do

[RBW] Re: Laid off and in a Quandary

2015-10-15 Thread Allan in Portland
If it helps, a lot of what people spend their money on is self-medicating
something else they are miserable about in their life.

A former co-worked joked after going back to grad school, "yeah, my income
has dropped by about 90%, but I'm saving so much on hookers and booze I
hardly notice the difference."

Personally, about 7 years ago I quit work and took a personal a sabbatical.
I can say almost the day after I walked out the door, and for the duration
of my sabbatical the long list of "stuff" that I had wanted and been saving
up for prior to my quitting lost all its desire to me. I was completely
contented with what I had and more than happy spending my time on doing
stuff that interested me and had personal meaning. It was remarkable, and
totally unexpected in its degree.

If the homestead experience is something you've always wanted to do, and
it's going to give you a lot of personal fulfilment, then I can almost
guarantee you won't miss the Clem and you'll probably even marvel at your
state of mind that had you sending your original email. On the other hand,
if you're going into the homestead as kind of a last resort/escape from the
broken middle-class economy we as a nation have found ourselves in, well,
odds are you're going to find it tough going with or without the Clem. If
you think having it around will be a source of life's small pleasures, go
ahead and get it. If you think it will be a source of friction and
resentment, by all means pass.

Best Regards,
-Allan

[RBW] Re: Atlantis completes the Pacific Coast

2015-10-15 Thread dougP
Hugh:

In a way this one picked itself. When the rest of the crew took off
several weeks ago, their only fixed point was to start at the Canadian
border. Norm & I concocted this scheme on the fly after my San Francisco
to Monterey ride. By the time I met them they were ready for a break.
After weeks on the road, my notion of carrying on to San Francisco didn't
get far, but then all of us have done that bit.

Now the two English gals we met really trumped all in terms of casual
approach. One brought a 30 year old Peugot from England, and her sister
bought a KHS hybrid in Portland. They did no planning, had no books or
maps. We of course were astounded & asked them how they figured out where
they were going. "Oh, there's so many people on bikes we just chat with
everyone we meet & it all works out." One planned to return to the UK from
San Diego but her sister was nudging her to go to Mexico with her. Now
those people are the true adventurers.

Tony,

Really enjoyed your blog post about the experience and ride. As always the
images were great. Just a funny side note. When I first discovered
Rivendell for some reason I thought they were East Coast based, of course I
quickly realized they were in Walnut Creek, but seeing you all riding out
there brought back that vibe. And you guy's and gal personified the
Rivendell ethos. Someday I'll make it out to the mid-atlantic and do a

Re: [RBW] Re: 2016 RAGBRAI

2015-10-15 Thread Robert F. Harrison
Riding "across" Oahu probably would be a bust. It's basically up and down
with an unfriendly tunnel in the middle. I think it's okay in a group, but
is pretty nerve-wracking solo (or so I'm told).

Around Oahu is probably a better idea - sort of anyway. You can't actually
ride around the entire island, you have to carry your bike at least part of
the way at Kaena Point.

Having said all that, we have a few organized rides every year; two are out
and back, one around Kaena Point but not really around the island.

1. Honolulu Century Ride - Honolulu to Kaaawa and back (
https://www.hbl.org/honolulucenturyride/)
2. JBL Metric Century Ride - Haleiwa to Kaaawa and back (
https://www.hbl.org/events/haleiwa-metric-century-ride/) - This is my
favorite.
3. Zach's Ride in Paradise - two day event with two stage ride on Saturday,
criterium on Sunday (https://www.hbl.org/events/zachs-ride/) - never done
any of it

So no, we really don't have a ride around the circumference, but it could
be done and I've done almost all of it except for Kaena Point. Here's a
video of the point entails:
https://www.hbl.org/events/zachs-ride/around-kaena-point-on-zachs-ride/

BTW - It's not a tiny island, but it's small enough we sure wouldn't get a
week out of it. Three days with two nights would be fun and not at all
stressful. Of course our randonneur friends would probably opt for one day
and go around twice. I've often given though to doing it (just once
though).

Aloha, Bob

[RBW] FS: Low Trail customized Hunqapillar size 58

2015-10-15 Thread René Sterental
Hi all,

It's been a very hectic summer at work with business travel and other
things, so I wasn't able to follow up on my quest to downsize my quiver of
bikes and push forward with my life simplification goals. Things are still
hectic, but a bit less so now, so I'm moving forward with my plans again.

For sale is my customized low trail 58 cm Hunqapillar, equipped as follows:

- Pewter custom painted 58cm Hunqapillar frame with custom made low trail
fork with braze-ons.
- Original (with original paint scheme) Hunqapillar fork
- Nitto seatpost
- Mavic A719 36 spoked wheelset with XT hubs built by Rich L @ RBW
- 60mm steel Berthoud fenders (front fender has Berthoud leather flap for
extra coverage)
- 50mm Schwalbe Big Bens
- Nitto Mini front rack
- Nitto Big Rear Rack
- Paul Neo-Retro polished front brakes with salmon pads
- Paul Touring polished rear brakes with salmon pads
- Shiimano Dura-Ace 9 speed downtime shifters
- 12/36 XT 9 speed cogset
- Shimano XT M771 Shadow rear derailer
- Brand new (just tested) Brooks B17 Imperial saddle
- Shimano brake levers for cantilever brakes
- Paul Bottom Bracket
- Interloc original headset
- Paul front brake cable holder
- Double kickstand
- Choice of bars: Bosco regular 58 steel or Bosco Bullmoose 58. The bike
currently has Albatross bars I was testing.
- Leather black grips (I have two options to offer: Brooks leather and PDW
leather, both in black; I just have to dig them out)

Parts I'm keeping:
- Front Derailer: I'm keeping the Campagnolo double front derailer to put
on another bike; these cannot be found anymore, so you'd have to get one
from RBW, particularly if you go with a triple crankset as the one I have
is for a double crankset.
- Custom Double crankset and pedals: I assembled this bike with a similar
crankset than the Betty Foy, and will be transferring them to my Atlantis.
The Atlantis has the traditional Sugino triple, so I can swap them if you'd
like the Sugino Triple on the Hunqapillar.
- King bottle cages: I forgot to remove them when I took the photos, but
I'm keeping them.

I think that's it for the parts. Let me know if I forgot something.

Detailed photos are on my Hunqapillar album on Flickr; they should be the
last series at the bottom, if sorted by date. Let me know if there are any
other views you'd like to see.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/albums/72157627319515196

I'm asking for $3,600 for the whole setup as listed above. I will entertain
offers. I'd rather sell the bike as a whole, but if there is only interest
for the frame and fork(s), then I'll disassemble it and put the parts for
sale separately.

I'm located in the SF Bay Area, so local delivery would be best. Otherwise,
I'll get a quote for packaging at my LBS and your choice of shipping. Those
charges will be separate.

For now, I'm definitely keeping the Atlantis; it suits me better and I love
it. As I move forward with my plans, I'll keep you all posted, especially
if other bikes come up for sale.

Thank you,

René

[RBW] Atlantis completes the Pacific Coast

2015-10-15 Thread dougP
Starting in 1988, I've been accumulating segments of the Pacific Coast,
sometimes little bits and other times large chunks. It's such a beautiful
riding area that some segments have been done multiple times. However,
owing to logistical issues, Brooking, OR, to Arcata, CA has eluded me.
Recently the opportunity came up to get there & do the missing bit (a
whopping 110 miles). Besides, it was 100 in SoCal & my friends biking down
from Canada / WA / OR kept sending pictures wearing rain gear. While
transporting north, it came to me that I've now ridden my Atlantis the
entire length of the Pacific Coast. Pictures prove it happened:

Thanks; good to know that they hold up. I'll probably choose the flat ones
for cost and to avoid what you report about the curved ones.

I've looked at those other vendors and Sykes is even more expensive, while
Anderson seems to offer only curved ones. The short list now consists of
Cody's company.

Unless someone has some for sale used and cheap ...
