[RBW] Re: FS XL Rivendells

2015-10-20 Thread Julian
It appears you've listed the Atlantis on eBay for $2000 obo -- is there a
$400+ Riv-list premium?

In the eBay listing it appears the bike has some parts missing (brakes and
chain at first glance), and something odd is going on with the front
deraiiluer cable. What's the clamp on the top tube?

FWIW, you might have better results if you have a fairly in-depth
description. Your current description on eBay, in totality, reads
"Traditional Riv Atlantis" I'm really not trying to be snarky, but
especially given the state of the bike in the photos, you might add a more
in-depth description, listing the build parts and explaining what is
missing and/or altered and why.

Best of luck with the sale,

[RBW] Re: A couple of Sackville questions

2015-10-20 Thread Ron Mc
I bought a sheet of 1/8" closed-cell foam. I cut 3 pieces, a bottom and
top liner, and a band that goes around the inside of the trunksack. While
I glued the band to itself, it all stays in place by friction. It's thin
enough not to affect the bag capacity, provides some thermal insulation,

 and
keeps the bag standing smart even when unloaded.

For me, Keven is RBW. While there are many other helpful and nice people at
RBW, Keven defined my experience there. Always helpful, always answering my
questions with a smile, always providing that extra touch to make my
experience there worth the 45 minute drive. No question was ever boring,
dumb or silly. I haven't been there in a couple of years, but I will miss
him next time I go.

The team has big shoes to fill, although I'm sure they'll make sure they
do. He set an example that should endure.

[RBW] Re: Clem Geometry

2015-10-20 Thread iamkeith
If the standover works for you, I think you're golden. Me, I'm still
worrying. Since they're shipping out in just a few days, this will by my
last obsessive, worry-driven, over-analysis. Looking at the Clem and Hunq
charts together again, I just noticed something else. Based on the
standover heights alone (which is the starting point in the normal process
of selecting a Rivendell bike), the sizes of these TWO MODELS COMBINED work
out very well in increments such that there is no overlap. Given all the
other similarities, its almost as if they're designed to work together:

- *45 Clem* (74.9cm)
 > 1.6cm delta
- 48 Hunq (76.5cm)
 > 2.6cm
- 51 Hunq (79.1cm)
 > 1.7cm
- *52 Clem* (80.8cm)
 > 2.0cm
- 54 Hunq (82.8cm)

 > 3.9cm

- 58 Hunq (86.7cm)
 > 1.6cm
- 5*9 Clem* (88.3cm)
 > 2.3cm
- 62 Hunq (90.6cm)

My size, of course, falls squarely in the middle of the *BIG* gap, between
the 54 and 58 Hunqapillars. (Which is also squarely between the 52 and 59
Clems.) Other bike models that happen to share a mysteriously-missing
size, at the exact same increment, are the XO-1 (57cm) and a Atlantis
(59.5cm). You know how, in the Clem Brochure, Grant said that there's
this weird, cosmic thing happening between Rivendell and Shimano, whereby
if they really like something it is sure to be discontinued? Well, there's
this weird cosmic thing happening between me and Grant whereby the bikes
he's designed, that I am most attracted to, don't really come in my size.

[RBW] Re: Estimating My Wife's PBH

2015-10-20 Thread iamkeith
If it helps as a frame of reference, my wife is between 5'-4" and 5'-5",
and also describes herself as having a long torso. Her PBH is 75.6" (29
3/4"). She rides a 50cm Rambouillet and feels like it fits her perfect.
I'd personally put her on a 51cm, though. Slightly more than a fist-full
of seatpost right now. (That bike was from the era when Riv models were
offered in many more size increments. )

[RBW] Low rider front rack for Sam Hillborne?

2015-10-20 Thread Conway Bennett
I have panniers I want to use more but don't want the weight of a rear rack as
I have rarely use them when I have had them so I want some inconspicuous
lowrider front rack, at least I think I do.

I like the original salsa down under rack but it's not available anymore or
anywhere but I am also considering the tubus duo but it's pricey and can be
hard to get in the states. HAR is even more expensive and designed for the
proprietary sackville bags so it is low on my list.

What do people use or have used with success and may want to offload?

Thanks in advance!

If you have the appropriate mounts for the Tubus Duo that's the obvious
rack to get. In fact, aren't Duo rack mounts unique and specific to
that rack? If you have ordinarly low rider mounts, the Tubus Tara is
the one to get, in my opinion. I got mine, painted silver, from a
supplier in the UK. Only black ones are imported to the US.

[RBW] Re: Estimating My Wife's PBH

2015-10-20 Thread Will
It's somewhere near 80 cm. The 53 Atlantis has a 78.9cm standover and that
works well really well. I have a little clearance, but not much. The 54.5
would be very tight for me.

I would call Riv and get someone to walk you through converting saddle
height to the numbers they need. With their shift to sloping top tubes I
think the fit range is more flexible. I suspeect the real issue is
determing what bar you want and getting the frame sized to handle that bar.
Riv tops tubes are quite long. My stem for Albastaches is 6 cm. That
suggests I've pretty much maxed frame size.

The other question you have is cargo function. If you get a frame that
skews big, but still fits standover needs, you will have lower seat
placement, which is definitely not a riding problem, unless you want to run
saddle bags. Saddle bags need room to hang. My hang space is short. My
solution was to install a Tubus rack and pannier. I am quite pleased with
that alternative. I would never trade it for a saddlebag at this point.
It's more utilitarian. I can hang and remove the pannier in about 5
seconds. That makes the setup very useful for shopping, commuting, and
parking in public places where you don't want to leave a $200 bag on the
bike.

I've owned frames sized small for me. Going bigger is better, IMO. The bike
is more stable. The ride quality is better, smoother.

I've seen a Hilborne in the wild. It is a beautiful frame. I can't say it's
less well constructed than an Atlantis. It is very good. My complaint with
Hlborne is 650B (vs 26" on Atlantis) and lack of canti-posts. I really like
the tire selection Atlantis enjoys. And I really like cantilever or linear
pull brakes. Like I mentioned up-thread, I'd be inclined to wait for
Appaloosa. A Hilborne quality bike with better clearance and cantis would
be absolutely awesome.

[RBW] Re: Racks for the Clem

If it were me, I would probably choose between the racks Riv sells. If I
was going to use the rear rack as a saddlebag support and random whatever
items, I would go with the Pletscher. If I was going to run full panniers,
I'd pony up for the Nitto Longboy Longstay.

As many of you Riv-obsessed folks know, one of the most important things
about a good visit to Riv is that your partner enjoys it. Keven whipped up
some espresso for my wife when we visited and she left with a better taste

bikes as I would like, but a better taste, for sure!

Thanks for that, Keven,

I was wondering that too Wayne. In looking at the most recent photos on the
blug it appears they've added a lower braze-on a couple inches north of the
dropout which I assume would work for a rack stay. This would effectively bring
the rack inboard, accounting for the longer stays.

Not sure about the plescher rack. What really would you put in a rat trap? I
can see it being handy for a jacket or a u-lock but that stuff can go in the
front basket.

Check with Wayne at The Touring Store:
http://www.thetouringstore.com/index.htm I use the Duo on my Atlantis &
like it a lot. I'm not sure Tubus adapter works with the Duo. It's
intended for a mid fork eyelet a specific dimension above the fork eyelet.
However, I've mounted mine to hourglass eyelets just below the canti posts,
with the lower mount to the fork via a P-clamp. This raises the panniers
enough that I can run my large Ortleibs up front.

[RBW] Re: Racks for the Clem

2015-10-20 Thread drew
Wife's clem proto came with a pletscher rack, and I replaced it with a
racktime. No issues in terms of fit.

Now if I could just figure out why the pletscher isn't fitting on my 700c

Re: [RBW] Re: FS XL Rivendells

2015-10-20 Thread Julian
Jim, that's good to know -- thanks.

Ryan, I'm sort of confused as to what you're offering and at what price,
and I might not be the only one -- I'm sorry if asking publicly is an issue
-- I do not intend to offend, merely to understand.

You say you offer a list discount -- that's great and certainly a nice
thing to offer -- I've done similar on this and the Bob-list for the same
reasons. You listed it here for $400 more than your buy it now on eBay. Is
the listed price here not correct? What is the actual Riv-list asking
price, then -- less than $2000? And is that for a complete bike, as your
initial post here indicated, or for a bike with some parts missing and
other possible issues, as seen on eBay?

Thanks,

[RBW] Clementine tire size?

2015-10-20 Thread Reid
OK, I see that the max tire size on the chart is 60. Does anyone know what
size the bikes will have as delivered?

Thanks!

Reid

[RBW] Re: Clem Geometry

2015-10-20 Thread Tim Wood
That's a strange and curious pattern for sure. Curious as I feel that big gap
would be a very common and popular size for the average sized male (5'9-6'1).

What is a good amount of stand over anyway? If the 59 Clem with 700x60's has an
88cm stand over and I have a 90 pbh in bare feet, I think I'm in for a snug
relationship with my top tube. Luckily I ride in fairly thick soled shoes (keen
sandals and blundstone boots). I ride mostly road and trail, nothing super
technical so I feel good about my choice. But as you say, it would be nice if
there was a size in the middle.

[RBW] Re: Keven

2015-10-20 Thread Dennis Hogan
+1 on Keven - he is very chill. I last interacted with him on a visit to
BB a couple weekends ago. He helped me conceptualize a new cockpit for my
Homer based on a test ride on a Hunquapillar that Roman had set up for me.
And he gave me a BB pin when I said that I got the last free Rivelo patch
from John for being the 10th visitor to the new store in Portland.

I first met Keven when I picked up my first and only riv - a AHH - in Oct
of 2010. It was a 65cm and apparenty he was the only one long enought to
ride and configure it for me.

I was in a similar place many years ago with two young kids and needing a
different work context - it was a tough choice but one that worked out.
Hope it does for Keven as well.

[RBW] Keven

Thank you Keven for helping me get my Bleriot repaired after it was mangled in
a crash! You were helpful in letting me know all the options, finding a
replacement fork, and just generally being wonderful!

Re: [RBW] Re: Estimating My Wife's PBH

2015-10-20 Thread Kevin Lindsey
No problem with well-intentioned lies. However, after 30+ years of
marriage, my ability to trick my wife into anything is pretty much
non-existent.
I'll estimate her PBH based on her current bike.
All the best,
Kevin

[RBW] Re: Estimating My Wife's PBH

2015-10-20 Thread Kevin Lindsey
Will -
What's your PBH?
Funny thing about the Riv specs is that I often can't find them on the new
website, at least, those specs having to do with sizing. Given the
critical importance of sizing, it could be that they want you to call and
chat about it rather than use (and, possibly, misunderstand) a chart.
Who knows?
