[RBW] Re: WTB: Some Green Backabike rear bags

2015-11-06 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hang in there, Bill. The website says there is a possibility the olive will
be there in a couple of weeks.

I have the grey backabike bags, and they are my favorite bike accessory
purchase this year, and possibly of all time. They look great, work great,
simple and easy to use, and I use them multiple times a day, so the
enjoyment is that much greater.

I did notice that the flat webbing used to secure the bags to the top of
the rear rack were fraying. I attribute this to a variation of the classic
square peg in a round hole syndrome. I replaced one side with a piece of
climbers accessory cord, and that does not get frayed (I have tons of scrap
pieces from a previous job, working for artists who used them to lash
together giant bamboo sculptures.)

[RBW] Build help needed

2015-11-06 Thread Edwin W
Soo... continuing in my Clem build project, as I was installing my vintage
sugino gp crank set with 165mm arms, I hit the chain stay with the chain ring.
I was upset at scratching the chain stay, but I'm set on having this bike for
the long haul, so it will get scratched. (But THIS early?).
Anyway, do I need a longer spindle or whatever for a bottom bracket? New bottom
bracket?

Thanks in advance for the guidance.
Still learning,

[RBW] Re: Let's See Some Clem/Clementine Pics

2015-11-06 Thread iamkeith
I just used Testors enamel. Gloss white, mixed with the tinniest bit of
yellow will match the crème color perfectly.

Don't waste your time with masking tape. (I tried) Just use a good
quality, fine, detail brush.

For the lettering on the napkin rings (headtube reinforcers) just splooge
the paint in, and wipe off the surface. Helps if the paint consistency is
not too thin and runny.

I did not sand or prep the surface, other than wiping it with thinner.
Hopefully the fact that it's new and hasn't been handled much and the
protection of being recessed will make it stick. If not, its easy enough
to re-do as needed.

It occurs to me that the gray, on the other hand, is going to be tougher.
It is beautiful, but the pearlescent properties are going to make
it difficult to ever come up with a satisfactory touch-up color. Like
orange-Rambouillet-difficult. Have to keep reminding myself that it is a
Clem and meant to be abused - beautiful or not!

[RBW] Re: New fat 700 tires! 700x42 ultra light

2015-11-06 Thread Bill Lindsay
IMO, no. Bottom Bracket height has been shown by some of the deepest
thinkers about bikes to have very little to do with actual stability on the
bike. Grant likes low BB because it makes it far easier to get the bars
up. Low BBs get you the risk of pedal strike when you use small diameter
tires, and the converse that you point out is true: low BBs give you
permission to run large diameter tires.

Jan Heine concluded that BB height on its own has very little to do with
handling at all. The general consensus is that BB height is very
meaningful to fit the person on the bike comfortably, but has little to do
with how the bike rides. Objectors to that conventional wisdom will state
anecdotes "I had a bike with a high BB and it rode like crap" etc. That
doesn't prove that BB height had anything to do with the bike riding like
crap. Correlation vs Causation.

All of the above, IMHO, ATMO.
