[RBW] Whatever else people feel about the long bikes...

2016-01-11 Thread Zed Martinez
They certainly rock in the snow and ice. Winter finally decided to show up
here in Indianapolis so I took the fenders off and threw the knobbies on
the Clem this weekend. Today was the first commute in the bad weather
(which in my case means basically a straight mile of unplowed, unsalted
bumpy ice through the local neighborhoods until I hit the trail)... and
man, the Clem was a much better ride for it than my previous entries. In
the past I've leaned mostly on my Felt hybrid with its aluminum frame and
disc brakes with some 35mm Schwalbe Winter Marathons, but, it was always a
terrifying white knuckle adventure in riding the bumps and hoping the rear
wheel didn't decide to kick out from under me while following a rut. Even
with just regular knobbies (the cheaper versions of Continental's Mountain
King II what that were the only 650b mountain tires in town...), the Clem
handled everything much more casually and, importantly, much less
terrifyingly. I can speak for any other Rivs, this being my first, but it
really felt like the long wheelbase was definitely helping me out today. I
was notably less likely to get stuck at the mercy of a rut, and the one
time I hit a slick patch and the bike started to slide I put my inboard
foot down (like I always do to be ready to walk off the bike as it goes
down), and hitting the ground with it was enough to knock the bike back
upright and reset the rear wheel. The bike regained its balance instantly
and rolled smoothly on back on a straight track. I've had worse
experiences, for sure. I also have to say, whatever they toted merits, I'm
increasingly convinced I won't be going back to disc brakes anytime soon.
On the Felt I had to ride only the front brake because if I touched the
rear one even lightly it was enough to slide the rear wheel out (Avid
mechanicals or Shimano hydraulics both). With the cantis on the Clem I
never felt like I was lacking stopping when I was on the cleared roads, but
I had enough modulation to use either judiciously while I was on the icy
stretch and it made things a lot less worrisome for it.

And, because pictures rock, obligatory "It's 7ºF, why are you taking a
picture?" picture.

[RBW] more than 15 shots for 2015...

2016-01-11 Thread Meade Anderson
Folks,

Here's a flickr album of some of my better shots from 2015. A few
comments...I didn't seem to capture too many great shots quality wise (all
iPhone) but do have more than a few great memories, and a confession, not
all of these shots are taken on bicycle rides...a few are from paddling
trips, runs, etc. I did a little more paddling in 2015 than in the past
few years and enjoyed my time on the rivers and bay but my cycling mileage
suffered. (Now I did have a few days which included a morning spin in the
piedmont area of Virginia, an afternoon paddle/float & fish, and later a
stop at the rural farm brewery (Lickinghole Brewery) for rehydration, a
snack from the food truck and music...doesn't get much better.) And there
were a few really cool rides that I forgot to take pictures like the day
that my long time pal Steve invited me on a ride around the Short Hill
range to inspect a forest fire. That day had very high winds and the fire
was moving north up both the eastern and western flanks and towards his
property but amazingly despite the winds, all ended well with mostly burned
timber and brush over rocky terrain.

And another confession, there's more than 15 shots...

https://www.flickr.com/photos/julianmeade/albums/72157662213189129/with/22945313504/

See ya on a ride (or a paddle)

[RBW] Re: Brake Levers for Albastache?

2016-01-11 Thread drew
I have the trp levers. The brakes work great, but I had to mount them upside
down because the ergo style design has the lever flayed out for use with drops,
and they angled oddly up when horizontally mounted. I'll probably change them
when I can justify a cockpit overhaul, but right now everything is pretty
nicely tuned in. I prefer aero levers, but zed is right, the cable routing is a
bit wonky on albastache

[RBW] Re: Brake Levers for Albastache?

2016-01-11 Thread Zed Martinez
Are you talking just brake levers, or integrated? For just brakes, I like
the Dia Compe Gran Compe 202 on mine
(http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/brakes/levers/gran-compe-202-non-aero-brake-levers-drilled.html),

though, if I was doing it again I'd get the cheaper non-drilled versions
(http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/brakes/levers/gran-compe-brake-levers.html).

I like the smaller bodies a lot more than the aero Tektro RL340s I used
previously, and I definitely like old style non-aero cable routing a lot
more on the albastache. The aero routing always made it hard to run new
cables through the housing once I wrapped it under shellacked cotton.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rust-proofing your frames

2016-01-11 Thread Anton Tutter
Good luck with the FluidFilm, I've heard the stuff is great. I had been
using FrameSaver and liked it a lot, but switched to Boeshield once when
there seemed to be a worldwide shortage of FrameSaver. Boeshield doesn't
seem to dry as waxy as FrameSaver, and whatever residue it leaves behind is
very thin, but I suppose it's better than nothing.

If you haven't already put a new BB in, while the BB shell is empty you
might want to drill a small (1/8") hole through the bottom of the BB shell
if the Atlantis's shell isn't already drilled. It is the best way to ensure
that any trapped moisture or even standing water drains and vents. You can
dab a little FluidFilm on the bare metal exposed from drilling. I've done
this on a few bikes and have been glad I did.

 White vinegar!

I filled the tank (which was completely lined with rust) with vinegar,
and added a few small sheet metal screws to knock the rust loose when I'd
shake it. I let it sit for about a week, shaking it a few times a day. A
week might have been way more than needed. but the point is, it came out
100% clean. I then treated it with an epoxy tank liner product to prevent
rust from returning, which I wouldn't ever do on a bike frame, but the
vinegar would certainly be a good rust treatment for inside a rusty
 bicycle
 frame.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rust-proofing your frames

2016-01-11 Thread Mark Reimer
Thanks Anton - the Atlantis already has a hole right at the bottom of the
shell. I was pleasantly surprised to find very little surface rust anywhere
inside the frame. I obviously couldn't see inside the seat and chain stays,
but the chain stays are sloped downwards so any rust would probably be
toward the BB shell, which looked clean so far as I could see. I treated
external surface rust with some clear nail polish, which is a short-term
fix. I've rubbed the paint off from muddy tires and dropped chains, so it's
fairly minor, but this should help slow it down till I one-day repaint it.

Regarding the Phil BB - I was using their new weather shields. I started to
wonder if they actually trap water INSIDE, rather than keep it out. I mean
of course they keep a lot of water out. But if the bb is ever submerged
momentarily, I could see them filling up and retaining water against the
seals. This is just a suspicion, I have no way of knowing it. Either way,
the only point of entry for water to access the bearings on a Phil BB would
be from the outside (the inside is protected by the bearing retaining shell
and mounting rings), so clearly they aren't preventing moisture from
getting at them very well. I hope I can find some good bearings locally and
fabricate some kind of bearing press to install them. Bummer that I JUST
traded my other Phil BB with new bearings in it for a WI BB!

Re: [RBW] Re: Rust-proofing your frames

2016-01-11 Thread Anton Tutter
I've had Phil BB bearings go bad in just one season from water intrusion.
In my case, it wasn't even submersion or winter riding. Regular rainwater
had made its way into the frame and pooled down at the BB shell. I removed
the Phil after noticing it was spinning a little rough, and sure enough
there were rust stains all over it and inside the BB shell. It was out of
warranty, so I had no choice but to pony up for new bearings. At least Phil
doesn't charge much for servicing; the bulk of the cost is the bearings
themselves. But I was annoyed-- those bearings should withstand water
intrusion better than they do.

Re: [RBW] OT: questions about multiple computer screens

2016-01-11 Thread Scott Henry
I have been using dual monitors for maybe 5 years or so. Both at work
and at home.
Work is a laptop with an extra monitor. Home is a desktop with two
screens.
A 17" monitor is pretty small in today's world though.

Don't limit yourself to monitors either. I use a 24" monitor and a
32" TV. Stop in to walmart and look around, often times (like this
time of year - right before the superbowl) a whole TV is cheaper than
a dedicated monitor.

was nsty rusty inside. Guess what ate the rust clean off, is dirt
cheap, can be dumped onto the street after, and available everywhere?

 White vinegar!

I filled the tank (which was completely lined with rust) with vinegar,
and added a few small sheet metal screws to knock the rust loose when I'd
shake it. I let it sit for about a week, shaking it a few times a day. A
week might have been way more than needed. but the point is, it came out
100% clean. I then treated it with an epoxy tank liner product to prevent
rust from returning, which I wouldn't ever do on a bike frame, but the
vinegar would certainly be a good rust treatment for inside a rusty
 bicycle
 frame.

Looking forward to warm! While not wishing my life away, I am playing with
destination possibilities for a trip to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary

Re: [RBW] Re: Rust-proofing your frames

2016-01-11 Thread Mark Reimer
Yeah I thought about that, but that will put it out of service for at least
two weeks, plus 30 bucks in shipping. Alternatively I could go down to a
bearing supplier and get equally high end bearings for under 30 bucks and
replace them myself, have it back on the road in an evening. Phil has been
good to me with fast turn-around and customer service, it's just the
US/Canada thing that gets in the way.

I've heard of their BB's lasting way, way longer than mine on a regular
occasion. My suspicion is that my bearings are rough either because they've
been submerged in water briefly (remember the s24o report where I attempted
to carrying the Atlantis across a swamp? The bb definitely took a bath), or
they were over-torqued on installation (I didn't use a torque wrench, next
time I will. I've found reports online of premature bearing wear as a
result of over tightening).

Hi James,

Of particular note is the cyclist have a smoke on a rest break. I recall
seeing old TDF images with racers having a smoke, apparently it was
believed to help their breathing. They were looking for any edge they could
get. I love that Tapei has a Italian bike fetish. It's great to see
cyclists from other parts of the world. Have a great 2016 and thanks for
the share.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rust-proofing your frames

2016-01-11 Thread Tim Gavin
I had my '88 Schwinn KOM blasted and powder coated clear (with a light
sparkle) this winter. (I'll take some pictures soon).

I treated the frame with Boeshield the other night. I plugged the tubes
with wadded-up paper towels, sprayed in the Boeshield, and then rotisseried
the tube to try to coat it evenly.

Boeshield is relatively thin, and runs and drips easily. It's advisable to
do over a surface you can wipe clean or don't care about. But it was an
easy task, and the frame and fork took me about 15 minutes.

Re: [RBW] Re: Smart Sams with fenders

2016-01-11 Thread Tim Gavin
I have P45 fenders over 700 x 38 Bontrager CX0 tires on my cross/gravel
bike. They have between 5 and 10 mm of clearance above the light knobs.
Less than optimal, but still ok.

Yes, the fenders plug up with mud more quickly than the stays would plug up
without the fenders. But, they only plug up when I'm riding in that dark,
sticky, brownie batter mud on farm "B" roads (Iowa topsoil is quite dark).
If I stay out of that thick mud then my fenders never plug up.
A little bit of mud is rarely a problem. If it's muddier than a little,
then I'm either on my fat bike or on gravel instead of dirt.

So, fenders + knobs + mud = clogs
But really, knobs + mud = almost as many clogs, almost as soon.
Take the sticky mud out of the equation and fenders + knobs = happiness.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rust-proofing your frames

2016-01-11 Thread Mark Reimer
Took the plunge last night and stripped the Atlantis down to the frame and
gave it a good dose of FluidFilm. The stuff sprays on nice and easy. I used
painters tape to seal off the bottom end of each tube, sprayed from the top
liberally, the taped off the top and end spun the frame around to coat
everything inside. Mess was minimal and I was able to apply it inside my
apartment. This morning it looks like the stuff has started to cure a bit,
into a yellowish thin film. The can says it will never harden, but rather
retain a soft waxy feel. Tonight I'll re-assemble the bike. Sad news was I
discovered my Phil BB, less than a year old, has notchy bearings already.
Not impressed.

[RBW] Let's see the best of your 2015

2016-01-11 Thread true
It's fun to see pics from other folk's rides, including the scenery, the bikes
and the people
and sometimes I get ideas from them.

Thanks for sharing them.

Most of my riding is in the urban and suburb areas of Dallas, TX

As a result most of my photos come from this area with an occasional
ride in a country road setting.
This area does have a lot of interesting sculptures, various outside art and
architecture if one knows where to look.

As I have aged I take more time to stop and snap a pic or ten.
As cell phone cameras have gotten better I pretty much rely of it these days.
I think just about all of these are taken with my S5 Samsung phone.

I linked my favs from 2015 in a story format on photobucket.

Yes, it's a selfie. But it's a selfie with Rizzo, my Betty Foy. I haven't been
able to ride in over a year, but the weather was so nice today (though a bit
chilly), I decided to take a chance to see how the new knee would handle a
short ride. I didn't go more than 4km from home, and I rode very slowly, but
the point is I rode my bike.

For Clayton and anyone else who's facing knee surgery (or any other kind of
surgery that's keeping you off the bike), I can only say DO IT. The recovery
won't be easy, but the reward will be so great that they won't be able to pry
the smile off your face for weeks.

Your potential seller will probably ask you what O.L.D. you need. Does

have an awesome 2016 and we revisit some of the same events and make more
new memories.

Re: [RBW] Re: Let's see the best of your 2015

2016-01-11 Thread Mark Reimer
Great idea, here's mine!

https://www.flickr.com/photos/theworldisours/albums/72157663447866785

I included a brief description of each photo in the album info up top.
You'll have to it 'see more' to read it all. A few more photos than some,
but I honestly had such a good year on the bike this year. Feeling very
thankful for that. Can't wait for what's to come!
