Was $95 plus shipping.

Asking $70 shipped USPS anywhere in the US.

[RBW] Re: FS 56cm Rivendell Sam Hillborne (double top tube)

2016-03-15 Thread Bruce Smitham
BUMP- Still for sale is my 56cm Rivendell Sam Hillborne (double top tube). I
just don't ride this bike with the others that I have. It's in excellent to new
condition. It works perfectly without any issues whatsoever. So here is the
list of parts: Wheelset is Shimano LX hubs (front is Dynamo), DT Swiss spokes
to Mavic A319 rims 36 spoke count front & rear. The pictures show Schwalbe
Marathon Supreme 40mm but I'm selling it with the Bruce Gordon Rock & Roads
43mm (see one of the photos). Sugino triple carnk (175mm arms) with 26/36/46
rings, Wipperman Connex 9speed SS chain, Shimano XT front & rear derailleur,
Shimano XT 12/34 cassette, Nitto Albatross handlebars, Nitto Technomic stem,
Shimano MTN brake levers, Shimano Dura Ace 9speed bar-end shifters, Meisha's
cork grips, Zefal frame pump, Nitto 65 seatpost, WTB Pure V saddle, B&M Luxus B
headlight, B&M taillight, Nitto lampholder, Nitto Marks front rack with double
stays, Nitto R-14 rear rack, VP 001 gold pedals, Pletcher kickstand, Tektro
R559 long reach brake calipers. I don't think I missed anything. I'd like to
get $2,200 plus shipping CONUS complete and $1,950 plus shipping CONUS without
front & rear racks. Pictures below:

tried Soma but they're out, don't like any other options out there in that

2016-03-15 Thread Surlyprof
I have Keen Newport H2's and Chaco Z1's. Chacos seem to have a little
stiffer sole and more open-air feel but I prefer riding with the Keens. I
like the toe protection even if it is only psychological since I can't
remember ever scraping a toe on the ground riding. I may try the Chacos
again. It'll be like a convertible for my toes!

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for riding Sandals?

2016-03-15 Thread JohnS
Another like for Keen Newport H2 and Keen Clearwater CNX. The Newport is
more robust and has a stiff sole, but the sole flares more than the
Clearwater and sometimes rubs the chain stay. I wear the Newport most of
the time for 9 to 10 months of the year. The Clearwater I have are black
and remind me of old school bike shoes, unfortunately the soles though
narrow are more flexible than the Newport. Both are great for around town
riding and the rail trail. I have a pair of Giro Republic shoes for longer
road rides.

[RBW] FS: Burley Solo Trailer, with Cargo kit

2016-03-15 Thread Bill Lindsay
There is a recent thread about infant carrying techniques. If anyone is
looking for the trailer solution, I have a Burley Solo that I would be
delighted to have out of my garage. I bought it in 2001 when my son was
born. I used it a fair bit between my two kids. I thought that it might
add some versatility to buy the cargo kit for it at the same time, and I
did use it a couple times in Cargo mode for S24O gear.

Anyway, I'd love a local (East Bay, California) to come take this off my
hands. If you aren't local, I can ship via BikeFlights. I think $100 plus
shipping would be a great deal.

Lots of photos starting here, showing both configurations

Re: [RBW] Shimano Road Hub 135mm spacing

2016-03-15 Thread clyde canter
If the bearings are set properly the extra nuts don't effect the "preset"
play in the hub. When it's time to repack bearings the task is a tad
easier if you remove (dremel) the threads on the inner innermost lock
nuts, effectively making them into spacers/ washers. I have a 126mm
o.l.d wheel I've done this to. By adding locknuts to both sides of the
axle I get somewhere around 133mm o.l.d. The wheel works in 126, 130 and
135mm framessteel frames of course. You also get a slight
front-derailer rub adjustment for frames that are flexy in the bottom
bracket or derailleurs with tighter throws. I'm not sure how the slightly
off chainline would work with STI or Ergo, but Shimano Barcons don't
seem be bothered by it, indexed or friction. I've ridden several thousand
trouble free miles on this wheel.

Re: [RBW] Shimano Road Hub 135mm spacing

This is also the reason why the instructions for overhauling a hub with QR
(e.g., Park Tool website) tell you to tighten the adjustable bearing cone
just enough so that there is a slight looseness or play in the bearings.
That way, when you tighten the QR lever properly, the slack will disappear.

Re: [RBW] Shimano Road Hub 135mm spacing

2016-03-15 Thread Eric Norris
The frame will only sit on the ends of the axles for as long as it takes to
tighten the quick release. From that point on, the quick release holds the
wheel in place. #sheldonwasright

FWIW, many mechanics don’t know this. I took my Singer to a local shop that
specializes in high-end custom bikes, and they were shocked (shocked!) at the
very small amount of axle extending beyond the cones on the rear wheel. I
explained that the had been like that for more than a decade, but they were
still incredulous. Later that year, I took the bike on a 400Km brevet, a 600,
and PBP.

unless you need the extra strength of the 135mm just add an extra locknut
on both sides of the axle and you are good to roll. The shorter axle will
have a couple mm left for the dropouts which is plenty. Actually Sheldon
wrote a piece about sawing the axle flush with the dropouts on vertical
dropout frames for an alternate way of chain tension on single speed
conversions. As always with Sheldon's info, it works. I have done it and
the quick release is all that is required to hold the wheel in the correct
place.

This is correct. You can use the current axle, as per Sheldon:

"Some folks will tell you that you also need to install a longer axle when
doing this, but that's not correct. Typical rear QR axles are 11 mm longer
than the over-locknut dimension of the hub, so there's 5.5 mm of axle
sticking out past the locknuts. That's way more than is actually needed. If
you are converting a 126 mm OLD 7-speed Freehub (137 mm axle length) to 8
or more speeds, the OLD goes to 130 mm. That will leave you 3.5 mm of
protrusion on each side, once you move the right cone over to even things
out. That's plenty.

In fact, no protrusion is truly necessary, but it's a convenience in wheel
installation to have some protrusion. I once set up a bike with zero
protrusion, where the axle was flush with the locknuts. (This was a
fixed-gear with vertical dropouts, and I did it to give me a bit more chain
tension adjustability.) I put a lot of hard miles on that bike and it never
gave me a lick of trouble."

This is from: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html

I have played around with some Shimano hubs, going from 126-130, 130-135
and 135-130. One thing I have noticed is that the hub shells from 90s era
mountain and road hubs are very similar, so really it is all about the
spacers/axles. Generally, as long as the seals/cones are compatible, you
can move between spacings and switch around axles etc...

Re: [RBW] Shimano Road Hub 135mm spacing

2016-03-15 Thread Lungimsam
So it's like the tire is pinched in place rather than the axle running under
the dropouts and to the outer edges of the dropouts? I'm visualizing the inner
edges of the dropouts resting on 2mm of axle on each side.

Re: [RBW] Yepp Mini on Rivendell experiences?

2016-03-15 Thread Edwin W
Dave,

That is one cute kid!! I think there is something nice about having the kid up
front so you can chit chat with him, but if he's too close, it will be
annoying. Raising the stem would raise you up and move you back a bit, and
boscos would do that more, but at a cost and for a hassle.

Good luck and let us know what you do.

Edwin

Re: [RBW] Yepp Mini on Rivendell experiences?

2016-03-15 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Is there a minimum amount of stem space required? How much? A timely thread as
I'm in the market as well!

It's good to see pictures with Albatross bars, looks like they work fine for
getting around the seats. Aside from the actual fitment to the bike of the
seat how do people change the loading of other commuting gear? Wald front
basket still OK? Do you get more wheel flop? My only complaint with my front
basket loaded on the Saluki is that the bars always want to fall back towards
the frame when stopped or pushing the bike... I've solved it on previous builds
with the VO spring thing at the back of the lower fork crown. A good solution
except that it would get mounted over the 's' in Saluki now which seems a shame.

But honestly I'm close to having to do it as the headset is adequately tight
and I do like to load the front. Given that a yepp is on that same turning
axis I'm wondering if it makes a difference.

Are drops and moustache bars definitely out for use with the yepp?

Tony
