[RBW] First S24O of 2016, and first on my Appaloosa, tonight!

2016-04-07 Thread M D Smith
Bill Wrote:

One sub-optimal finding is that I've found that I don't have a water bottle
small enough to fit into an Iris cage in the third position under the downtube.
The smallest bottles I have still hit the fender (P65). There's water at the
campsite, so I'm not going to worry about it tonight, but I do want to be able
to run three bottles someday. Maybe I can tweak the fender position. Maybe a
different cage will position the bottle lower. Etc.

To which I repy:

Remember back in the olden days, when what are now considered normal bottles
were "large" and there were smaller sized bottles (without the upper section)
that were considered "normal?"

Well, see if you can find one of those. I specifically sought one out for a
long tour I did and was happy that I made that decision. I often found myself
filling up on water in gas station bathrooms. More often than not, the spigot
on the sinks were so short that it made the filling of a larger bottle
impossible. The only way to refill, I found, was to use the small bottle and
fill the larger bottles from it. It was actually a trick I learned (or rather
an issue I discovered) on an earlier shake down mini tour.

Enjoy your trip!

Hi all, clearing a few wheelsets, looking to sell local to SF Bay Area

linked, but discount for forum members.

Phil Wood Rivendell "rivy" rear hub laced to Velocity Dyad, built by Rich
Lesnick of Hands On Wheels. 700c, spaced to 130mm but able to move to 135mm
with proper spacer. Uses a freewheel, I'll throw in a 6 speed for free!
Front hub is also Phil Wood, in same polish, but not the Rivendell
addition. Laced to Ritchey rim.

Panaracer Pasela TG 32's and tubes.

$350 on Craigslist, $300 for forum members

Go for a long ride on a bike with a saddle that doesn't fit
you. Your
a$$ will clamor plenty, and you won't give a damn whether you
are
perfect or not, you'll just want something to make the pain
stop. And

[RBW] Best advice for securing bikes in a garage

2016-04-07 Thread Rod Holland
I keep a 32' aluminum extension ladder ly1ng against one wall of the garage. I
find it works well as an improvised bike rack, and lock 3 bikes to it. Of
course, a determined thief with the right tools, operating unobserved, could
defeat this, but the garage is normally locked. So far, so good.

[RBW] First S24O of 2016, and first on my Appaloosa, tonight!

2016-04-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
My 14 year old son is on Spring Break, and one of the things he wanted to
do was go on an S24O. I'm leaving the office early, and we'll ride ~28
miles from home in El Cerrito to Lake Chabot Regional Park. Tomorrow
morning we'll get up, break camp and ride the ~15miles down through Castro
Valley to my office in Union City. I'll keep him busy in the lab during
the workday Friday.

Me: 55cm Joe Appaloosa. Him: 52cm Yves Gomez. I'll be running most of the
cargo, with a Nitto Big Front Rack, Sackville Backabike panniers (on the
front) a Wald big basket, and a Sackville Saddlesack Medium (no rear rack).
He'll have a Platrack and a Sackville Slickersack setup.

One sub-optimal finding is that I've found that I don't have a water bottle
small enough to fit into an Iris cage in the third position under the
downtube. The smallest bottles I have still hit the fender (P65). There's
water at the campsite, so I'm not going to worry about it tonight, but I do
want to be able to run three bottles someday. Maybe I can tweak the fender
position. Maybe a different cage will position the bottle lower. Etc.

Wish us luck! Our in the tent passtime will be: Cribbage!

So I used the soapy solution and applied it to the tire bead and it helped.
However there is still a slight hop. Next I'll add a second layer of rim

[RBW] Re: Frame pump placement - Rear triangle possible?

2016-04-07 Thread drew
the pump in bag is a fair point. i have a mini that i toss in a bag on my
fastest bike. but i swap bags and move stuff around so much, that im never
sure exactly where it is. the frame pump can just stay.

issues i encountered when trying to mount on rear triangle, or back of seat
tube were: 1-when mounted on the seat stay, from drop out corner to top of
seat tube, the pump pushed my fender inward and it caused rubbing on the
tire. but i have 50mm tires+fenders. 2-when mounted on the back of the
seat tube, from bb area to the top, my xt front derailer pushed the pump
out so that it didnt fit cleanly. the clamp bolt on that particular
derailer hit it just in the right spot for it not to work.

Go for a long ride on a bike with a saddle that doesn't fit you. Your
a$$ will clamor plenty, and you won't give a damn whether you are
perfect or not, you'll just want something to make the pain stop.
 And
chances are, you will be able to find one that works. Even imperfect
people deserve a pain-free ride, and philosophical absolutes in
practice
are little more than hot air.

however those are tent poles wrapped in an old pair of socks lashed down

Re: [RBW] Re: Frame pump placement - Rear triangle possible?

2016-04-07 Thread Mark Wilkins
I have a Topeak full-size that I use in the rear triangle of my 60cm
Ram and my 61cm Atlantis, just like the pics of Sean Hipkin's bikes.
I'm not sure of the size of the pump, but I recall using it this way
because it was just a hair too short to fit snugly under the top tube
of my 60cm Ram.

It fits snugly on both the Ram and Atlantis, and I don't use a strap.
If I was riding any rough(-er) terrain, I probably would.

Mark

[RBW] Re: Frame pump placement - Rear triangle possible?

2016-04-07 Thread islaysteve
If you dont mind giving up your seat tube water bottle, you can mount a
Topeake frame pump (and probably others) there easily. I have the XS size
for my 51 frame; Topeakes come in about 4 sizes. I also used one of the
water bottle mount screws to hold a small Velcro cable tie; much less
conspicuous than the black Velcro strip provided with the pump.

[RBW] Re: FS: Paul Racer Brakes

2016-04-07 Thread Michael Hechmer
Patrick, when you do a 650b conversion you lower the rims by 19 mm. Since
the Racers go to 57-67, they should work on any conversion from 38 which is
common for short reach brakes to 48. Standard reach brakes are usually 37
- 47. So if the brakes you have don't work I feel sure they are Racer Ms.
I have those on my Ram and they are great for that bike. If you are going
to use 650B x 38 these brakes will work, but if you want an even wider tire
you would need to deflate the tires to put the wheels on & off. The brakes
are specked for 55 mm fenders, but I have squeezed VO 60 mms under these.

I hope this helps.
Michael
