Just a quick reminder, meetup tomorrow at 10AM at WC bart. Then ride over

pretty hilly, but nothing crazy). Then down to BBH. Anyone coming but
running late just PM me from this thread.

Iamkeith,
I'm just a hair under 6' tall, PBH is 85.5~86. My saddle hit is 75.5. Grant's
suggested PBH range for this one is 83 to 88. So I'm just about dead center of
that. It's not a traditional look but that's what my custom Rivs are for :^).

Nice, Frank. Can i ask how tall you are, and your saddle height? Hard part of
jumping on these is not knowing if it'll fit and, especially, not knowing
whether or not a future version might fit even better. Looks to me like youre
making this one work despite being on the tall side though.

[RBW] Re: Anyone using this Ti lock? How you like it?

2016-07-15 Thread Minh
I have one of these as well, and my biggest complaint is the way it hooks
on the frame to carry it around, i'm always worried it will scratch the
frame so i only use it on my beater (which does not have a basket so it
works, but this bike does not need such a fancy lock). locking can be a
bit futzy with how it has to catch the cylinder. one thing i didn't think
about, if you don't want to carry this on your top-tube, there aren't many
other options to carry it--try putting this in your basket!

all the videos and don't scare me off as i think any lock can be defeated,
if a thief can use an angle grinder to cut a chain in public view you'll
never beat them. maybe this one is worst because you only need a giant
cable cutter so it's less noisy. what turns me off about this lock is the
price compared to other options which i feel are about the same in terms of
security.

i think what you're paying for here is the form factor more than anything
else, i'm not sure i'd buy another one--the only reason i have one is that
i got my heavily discounted.

[RBW] Re: Anyone using this Ti lock? How you like it?

2016-07-15 Thread Philip Kim
Yikes! To be fair those are some huge bolt cutters.

Seems like a cool product, but I do like the Abus mini lock

I have. I also use in conjunction with the Abus cable lock
,

if my bike is going to be locked up for a while.

The Abus mini lock is a two bolt system, so even if you cut one part, the
other arm is still locked in place, unlike the Kryptonite U-locks. I feel
like with this TiGr lock, there's only the cylinder holding everything
together.

[RBW] Re: Line of Sight movie has atrocious cyclists. What is going on?

2016-07-15 Thread s...@austin.utexas.edu
I agree that the "messenger wannabe" phenomenon is a problem.
Unfortunately, those hipsters who are attracted to "messenger style" simply
affect it without any pragmatic reason to do so and usually without the
bike-handling skills required. But they'll most likely move on to the next
cool thing after awhile, if we're lucky, some will stick and become real,
lifelong cyclists (abandoning the reckless bravado along the way). If we
can return to the original post regarding the "Line of Sight" film, these
messengers (Alfred Bobe Jr., Austin Horse, and Christian Thormann) are
actually not only working bicycle messengers, but are also sponsored by
major companies (Red Bull, Masi, etc.). These guys possess incredible
bike-handling skills, speed, endurance, and are actually top-notch
athletes. Watching this high-octane footage is no different that watching
skaters performing the most insane tricks in dangerous situations or
watching Danny MacAskill perform some of his incredible, death-defying
stunts. Pedestrians are hit and killed by cars WAY more than anyone is
injured by a reckless messenger (or messenger wannabe). Car traffic in
congested cities like NYC, Boston, Philly hate reckless pedestrians as well
as cyclists. Cyclists hate reckless drivers and pedestrians. Pedestrians
hate reckless drivers and cyclists. However reckless they all are, it is
highly unlikely that cyclists and pedestrians will kill. It is all too
likely that reckless drivers will. I have seen taxi cabs performing as many
feats of recklessness as bicycle messengers.

Re: [RBW] Anyone using this Ti lock? How you like it?

2016-07-15 Thread Lungimsam
I wonder if the rivets can be easily drilled out to remove the lock. I have an
email in to customer support.

I use a couple different Kryptonite locks and a frame lock as a ulock in a
pinch. Usually fits aroubd stop sign type pole and I can catch a stay with it.

Locking my wifes bike with mine in public places with my super long Ulock can
be like solving a jigsaw puzzle sometimes. But works.

I am thinking that Abus mini 40 with the double whatever it is called would be
good as crooks have to cut both sides to get it open.

$100 is steep for the tigr. Also concerned that the trim look might invite
theft attemps.

Not sure which lock to get next.

Re: [RBW] Anyone using this Ti lock? How you like it?

2016-07-15 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I bought a TiGr mini a couple months ago and it's a nice, lighter
alternative to the Abus steel-o-flex (
https://www.abus.com/eng/Mobile-Security/Bike-Safety-and-Security/Locks/Steel-O-Flex)
that I otherwise carry around. It's a bit more fiddly to lock up compared
to a mini u-lock or standard u-lock on some bike racks due to its odd shape
and locking mech - sometimes it takes me a couple tries to get my bike in a
position where everything lines up just so and I don't suspect this would
happen even with a mini-u - If you regularly park on crowded bike racks,
I'd say this could be an annoyance.

[RBW] Re: Anyone using this Ti lock? How you like it?

2016-07-15 Thread Jeremy Tavan
I bought one of the Mini TiGr locks for my titanium go-fast bike, and
overall I'm quite happy with it. Sometimes it can be a little difficult to
get it over my Clem's fat tires and a thick bike rack, but for most
applications I've enjoyed it. The titanium loop is very light, though the
steel lock cylinder is pretty hefty. It operates smoothly, and the
mechanism is quite clever. I can't provide a guess as to "how secure" it
is, as I don't park my bikes in high-risk areas and I've never seen any
evidence of someone trying to defeat the lock. I may buy a second Mini TiGr
for my fancy schmancy town bike. If they'd sell me one with a matching
cylinder to my other one so I could share keys, that would be extra nice.

Cheers,
/Jeremy
