I regularly do hilly rides and never felt like my 24 chainring with 34 cog
in the back is too low. This feeling is especially true after a bunch of
riding and when I am really tired. A slow spinning ride certainly beats
walking up the hill for me. Whatever long or tired may be for each person
will be different, but when I reach that long and tired, I am happy to have
those low gears!

[RBW] Re: Hub area bag/rack mounting hacks

2016-08-27 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I was specifically looking for solutions for the hub area bag/rack combo. I
think the backabike bags have some similarity in that they also use nylon
straps for attachment, and I'll comment on that a bit, but the hub area
bags have a bottom pocket that slides into the bottom of the rack as the
bottom anchor point, so they are a touch different. This pocket actually
complicates matters a bit for mounting systems like the Ortlieb kit as you
can't just drop the bag onto the rack from the top, rather you slide the
pocket into the bottom of the rack from the bottom.

I'm not sure the Ortlieb system will work on these bags, but I'm fixing to
figure it out.

I like the aesthetic and the simplicity that Riv is going for with these
bags, and I don't find the mounting solution for the hub area bags to be
problematic, but I wanted to see if I could improve it. I think that the
strap mounting solution for the backabike bags is a bit more problematic
due to the size of the bags. They're bigger bags which represent
opportunity to get more weight in them. If you have one of those bags
loaded with heavy stuff, I have to think that mounting/unmounting with the
straps, regardless of how frequent you do it, could be fairly cumbersome.
The hub area bags could be cumbersome too, but they're smaller mount lower
to the ground so even if they are heavy you don't have a large bag to lift
as far off the ground.

Since it is custom, and they offer different head tubes and braking
options, I am pretty sure they would be happy to take your money and get
you on a Fantasy "Riv, " complete with cantis, quill stem, and geometry for
bars level with saddle. A Firefly All Road was reviewed in BQ last issue.

Like Steve, I had a '91 Spectrum. I liked it fine, but I like steel better.
I've ridden modern Ti as well--a friend bought a Lynskey road bike
recently. It's a great material for bikes, but it just doesn't do much for
me--certainly not enough to pay the extra $$$. Though I did flirt with
buying a proto ti rSogn that Sean of Rawland offered at one point (which I
believe was built by Lynskey).

If you are referring to my comment in another thread that they are not
designed for easy on/easy off, that was definitely not a lament! I
experience no grief over this, because I knew they were not made for taking
on and off frequently, and I don't need bags that facilitate that.

 Here is the product description:

*Both mount via two grommets and a strap (included). It's not the one hand/
one second mount and release of a lot of modern bags, but if you can spare
30 seconds, you'll see the beauty in its simplicity and security, and may
have some bonus peace of mind knowing there's nothing to break, and you can

Now I see from Jeff's latest post that apparently you can easily retrofit
these with Ortlieb hardware. So there you go! Me, I'm sticking with the
stock system.

I got a Bike, Book & Hatchet shirt for 5 bucks, then bought a MultiSack and bar

I brought my Dahon folder 2-speed for a little underbiking at Shell Ridge. I

the trailhead just as I had packed my bike back in the car. I met Mark's wife,

[RBW] Re: Albastache Cockpit Tweaks

2016-08-27 Thread Lungimsam
Dentist visit for the tusks.
Nice work!

In one of the readers Grant did a set up recommendation for tusks.
Distances and angles of brake levers, etc. It was interesting and fun to
read.

'staches are easy and fun to tweak and set up.
Drop bars are a bear. Very difficult because the leaning is on the hoods,
so both hoods gotta be even in every axis. Easy to get neurotic over it.

Leaning on 'staches is on the bars, not levers, so they are a joy to play
around with when setting up!

[RBW] OT: best tablet or Kindle Fire alternative?

2016-08-27 Thread Patrick Moore
I have an old Kindle Fire, which someone onlist very kindly donated. The
battery is losing hold, and I'd like a slightly more generally useful
replacement, meaning that the device's principal use would be Kindle, but
I'd also like to be able to surf lightly and check and send email.

The device would have to be faster and less "klunky" than the Fire.

The device's screen must be more or less the size of the Fire's, and it
must weigh about the same -- I like reading in bed.

I don't use it for deep surfing or actions that need privacy security.

I'd buy used before new, but new cheap is acceptable.

What are my options, and which is best? I use Apple laptop and phone, but I
am not tied to the marque.

I'll give the Fire away free, shipping incl., if and when I get a
replacement device - it was shipped to me free and I thank the giver again.

Thanks.

Jay, my experience is similar to Ren'e's. I had a persistent rythmic click
that I couldn't find. After much adjusting and inspecting, a friend who is

the tire off and carefully looked at the rim while he hand stressed it.
Under load a hairline cracked appeared in the rim. The crack was visible
with a 10X hand lens, but not by eye unless under slight load. Bob

Re: [RBW] Re: Fantasyland Daydream: Ti "Riv"

2016-08-27 Thread Steve Palincsar
Some Ti frames are flexible. Some people do not like flexible frames
and will disparage them. And that's what you heard.

My 1991 Ti Spectrum definitely is. Back then, before the fall of the
Soviet Union and the Peace Dividend, there was no bicycle Ti tubing;
there was Ti for aircraft hydraulic systems and Ti tubing for liquid
Sodium for the cooling of nuclear reactors, and it came in limited
tubing diameters and thicknesses. Like it or no, back then builders
didn't have the option of choosing to fine-tune stiffness, the way they
do now (to see this in action, check out Seven Cycles' order form).
Today, you can get a Ti frame to be as stiff or as flexible as you like.

[RBW] Albastache Cockpit Tweaks

2016-08-27 Thread Deacon Patrick
Albastache (new Moustache) tweaks! i take a year or more to decide what and how
to tweak, and each year the tweaks get smaller, because they don’t need to be
bigger.

2 cm shorter stem; inboard shift of brake levers (better leverage for just 1-2
finger braking); thumb shift instead of bar end shifter, for direct access to
shifting in the curves when it matters most (climbs and descents).

Photo helps make sense of it all:

Re: [RBW] Fantasyland Daydream: Ti "Riv"

2016-08-27 Thread Patrick Moore
Regarding the "Riv" part: I could easily do without the lugs if a frame had
the "fit" and "feel" of a good (road) Riv, and such a "Riv" in ti would be
wonderful. (IMO, the essence of a Riv is the fit and feel; all else is very
much secondary.)

I recall an American seller of custom ti's, who used to be on the iBoblist,
who sourced his wares in China. Can anyone recall his company's name? The
prices IIRC were very reasonable.

[RBW] Fantasyland Daydream: Ti "Riv"

You've got Riv in quotation marks, implying that your fantasy bike is like some
Rivendell in some way. Which one? What way? Road bikes that have clearance
for wide tires and that allow you to get your bars up high are pretty common
now. A titanium cruiser with really long chainstays would be harder to source.

Or are you talking about having Grant work up a custom design and right when he
goes to send the build sheet to Nobillette, you have him send it to a Ti
builder?

Or are you just starting conversation?

[RBW] Re: Cantilever brake question...

2016-08-27 Thread René Sterental
Here is the source of my original confusion; extracted from the article
linked by Alan:
"*Straddle cable and yoke position*
To get the most out of your canti brake, it's crucial to get the straddle
cable carrier (yoke) installed in the right position based on the type of
brakes you are running. Simply put, you want to try to achieve a 90 degree
angle between the pivot bolt/cable anchor/straddle cable. The angle formed
if you drew a line from the pivot bolt to the cable anchor on the arm and
along the straddle cable should be around 90 degrees. This gives you a
good combination of modulation and power. It's possible to alter this
angle to get more power, giving up modulation. A rough rule of thumb is
low-profile brakes require a low straddle cable carrier position, wide
profile brakes require a high straddle cable carrier position. Going even
lower on a low-profile brake will give you more power, but the modulation
will be lower and the brake pads will need to be set closer to the rim.
This position also will feel a little mushy at the lever. Most lower
profile canti brakes I see have the straddle carrier set too high. This
might feel good at the lever; solid feeling, you might say, but when you
need to hit the brakes you won't have the power needed to stop."

See the sentence that starts with "A rough rule of thumb..."

So I checked my Neo-Retro yoke position; it wasn't too high, limited by the
crown fork cable hanger, probably around 1 - 1.5" above the fender (recent
photo: https://flic.kr/p/Huku4A). Lowered it to almost touching the fender,
just 5 - 6mm away, and though the feeling increased slightly, the braking
is still less powerful than the rear Touring brake.

Next step is to remove the rack (hassle!) to install the Touring brakes and
check if the MiniMoto fit or not.

Stay tuned...

René

Are you talking geometry, lugged joints or overall aesthetics? I'm not
sure the later two would be possible, even "faked," because of the joining
methods that will work with Ti. Tig is your only option, I think. Also, I
have two Ti bikes. One is stiff because it's a compact frame, but the
larger one is VERY flexy which is the much-more common description. I
can't see anything in Ti having a Riv-like ride quality, which is typically
very solid and stiff feeling.

[RBW] Re: Toyo Atlantis Shimmy ???

2016-08-27 Thread iamkeith
Tony,

I think I may retract some of what I've said above. I always stress out
about being an arm-chair mechanic and giving bad advice so, once I've said
something, I keep going over it in my head and thinking about how I might
have been wrong. In this case, I think the added shim is NOT where I
thought it might be from looking your picture.

I just took a look at my daughter's bike which has the same headset.
Here's a shot from a slightly different angle than yours, which shows the
race fully inserted into the headtube. Viewed from the angle of your
photo, it does give the appearance of there being a "gap," which I took to
be a spacer.

So, if they had to add a spacer in order to be able to tighten the
locknut, what I'm now thinking is simply that the upper lip of the locknut
was contacting the top of the steerer tube. This was probably happening
all along but, after facing the headtube and removing material, it just got
worse. So one of those regular spacers needed to be thicker. With some
locknut designs (this one included), there is a pretty small margin of
error in terms of necessary spacer height: too many spacers and not enough
threads will be engaged; too few spacers, and the locknut will bottom out
before tightening against the upper cap. Easiest way to figure out how
many spacers you need is to tighten the locknut *without* spacers, measure
the gap, and then add spacers that total a couple of mm MORE than that.

Still If that headset was repeatedly coming loose on you for years,
then it was likely damaged, and you really should replace it before trying
anything else. If it was ovalized or distorted, that could make your
steering want to "index" to a certain point, which would make it very hard
to ride no-hands.

Similarly: This is counter-intuitive but I've heard it mentioned enough
times that I think there must be something to it: If a headset is
tightened slightly TOO MUCH, it will actually make it harder to ride
no-hands. You should try loosening it just a bit and experimenting.

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2016-08-27 Thread Robert Barr
Leah, I will chime in with some observations from Indianapolis. I live in
an area with several schools that don't provide transportation. A number of
parents, mainly moms, ride back and forth to school with groups of
children. There is a wide variety of bikes and engines. A number of the
moms use old Burley/BOB/... child trailers to carry school stuff. We don't
have any steep hills in the area, but given the amount of gear I see being
transported and the bikes and engines, I think a trailer of some type would
work well for you. Best of luck. Bob

I've played around with multiple nylon straps, d-rings, mini-carabiners,

[RBW] Re: Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2016-08-27 Thread Corwin
I agree with Mark. A trailer is the best solution. Keeps the weight low
(can't get lower than a trailer), is more stable than panniers, and can be
attached and detached in a matter of seconds if you get a trailer like the
Burley Nomad. I had one for sale recently for half the price of a new one.
I bought mine several years back and carried many loads of groceries home
in it. It even held several loads with power tools. And a trailer will make
your whole group safer with it's orange flag flying about head height.

Regards,

Corwin

Gorgeous bike/build! Are those Compass Switchback Hill tires? If not, I was
lurking around another thread and was wondering if you were able to fit
those tires in the Hillborne? Thank you.
