Re: [RBW] A plug to buy something from Rivendell Bicycle Works: A Nitto F-15 rack

2016-09-22 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've got the F15 with the Barsack. I used it at first on my Hilsen, now it's on
the Roadeo. It's great for brevets. It doesn't bother the steering. Another
neat thing about the rack is that the clamps that attach to the handlebars are
pretty inconspicuous, so you can remove the rack and leave the clamps on. It
goes on and off quickly. I think they look a little better than an empty
decaleur.

Re: [RBW] A plug to buy something from Rivendell Bicycle Works: A Nitto F-15 rack

2016-09-22 Thread dstein
It seems to me it'd better to plug the bag, not the rack, since so few bags
are made to go with it. Seems very specialized, whereas most other front
racks will fit most other front bags. That being said, it looks like a cool
system (barsack + f15). I've seen the barsack in person and it's much nicer
than it seems from the website (which I've never even noticed it on).
There's some very well thought out features on the bags, including the
magnets which are genius.
>

Does extra weight on the handlebars affect steering more than if it sits
lower on like a mark's rack?

[RBW] A plug to buy something from Rivendell Bicycle Works: A Nitto F-15 rack

2016-09-22 Thread RonaTD
Another very happy user here. I have two boxy bags and two racks. I also have a
Berthoud medium bag on a decaleur on another bike. The Berthoud is only
marginally bigger. The boxy bag is plenty big for a brevet unless I need a lot
of spare clothing, in which case the Berthoud is too small, too. The magnetic
closure on the boxy bag is much handier than the elastic cord closure on the
Berthoud. On the other hand, the built in map case on the Berthoud is way
better than the add-on case from RBW. As noted, it is a real boon to be able
to mount a handlebar bag on any of my bikes. Well, I haven't put it on my Riv
Road with a Campy brifter setup. I suspect the cables might interfere with
mounting the rack there.

2016-09-22 Thread Ray Varella
I had one of those many years ago with a "Boxy Bag" Riv used to sell.

The bag had tubular channels for those rods to slide through.
My guess is any handy seamstress could modify most types of handlebar bags to
fit those rods.
That would open up numerous options for other bags.

I don't know why I ever sold the set I had.

[RBW] Re: Surly Pacer sizing

2016-09-22 Thread Richard Rios
I don't think it was mentioned and it's a great point about the bars. Lots of
stuff plays into sizing. Perhaps he would like to offer more info and someone
could offer a more specific response. Or maybe he was already leaning towards
one and was looking for a bit of reassurance. Don't know. Hopefully some of the
feedback he gets will be helpful though. I know I've bought a few bikes sight
unseen for ok, better, and worse. It's a tough spot to be in because nice bikes
can be kinda expensive and you tend to lose your butt if you decide to sell
cause you don't dig the fit. Had happened to me a few times. For example I
originally bought a 52 Sam H. And after riding and remeasuring my PBH decided
it was a bit small...so then I bought a 56 and wow that felt like a huge jump
in size. I never got comfortable and sold it. Truth be told they were
technically both fine and great bikes But I was doing the whole hand wringing
thing. In the end though a 56 atlantis feels much better to me then either of
the sams...any way lost my behind on both bikes / frames so the topic is kinda
close to my heart and if I can help a brother out in this area I do my best to
point in a reasonable direction. I think performance / competitive has a fit
calculator out there that offers three frame sizes calling them french, eddy,
and something else...maybe try that see what shakes out.

My PBH is 83.x. If I was going to get a Pacer, it'd be a 52 or 54, but

the question is, and pardon if it was mentioned, but does Jay want drop

The Sackville Bar Sack may be kind of small, especially if you are packing
raingear on a brevet. I love the magnetic closure feature. RuthWorks
knows how to make a bag for the F-15 and could build it tall if you have
room. Or maybe David Banzer even.

[RBW] Re: Surly Pacer sizing

2016-09-22 Thread Richard Rios
Absolutely. There is no exact method for sizing a bike. Personal preference
plays a huge role. After going round and around about the whole finding the
"perfect" frame size...I have resigned myself to the whole F@#! it get a close
enough frame size, to which there are no major compromises and it looks ok to
my eye and shazam! Happiness and lots of bike riding ensues! Rather than the
wring my hands and worry about a few mm here or there and constantly kick
myself for not having had bought the other size frame camp. The "perfect" frame
size or bike for that matter only exists in our minds. And as always the
question of perfect for what? But this is not to say it isn't fun or worthwhile
to discuss what the perfect frame / bike might be and why...Because we all
know it is. :) But a suggestion was asked for and usually any one person should
be able to ride at least 3 different frame sizes in 2cm incraments pretty
happily. With the starting place for that being saddle / pbh range ...becauae
ya gotta start somewhere and it was offered by the OP, which suggests it is an
important sizing parameter for him. I think that problems pop up when people
want or end up at the opposite extremes / high bars and the smallest frame
possible when the bike is not designed for that. Then they get miffed and say
all kinda bad stuff about the bike and the person who recomended the size. With
that said, back to the question. A 58 would really seem to be the safest bet in
this situation and subsequently my recomendation based on info offered. Jay
provides his pbh which would suggest that is what is important to him about how
he sizes a bike. Had he offered torso length or reach numbers it might have
suggested different priorities size wise, maybe he has a long torso...but the
58cm would prolly offer the most versatility for higher or lower bars without
extreme stems or spacer stack. The 56 and 60 will both work but they will
commit to a racier or comfort driven position. Which all depends on info he
knows that we dont. Therefore he can take the suggestion FWIW and make a
decision based on his priorities and hopefully feel a little bit more
comfortable about his purchase if he has to buy the bike sight unseen. Which is
the point of asking such a question...I think ;^)

[RBW] A plug to buy something from Rivendell Bicycle Works: A Nitto F-15 rack

2016-09-22 Thread Bill Lindsay
Nitto makes a front rack called the F-15. It clamps to the 26.0mm part of
your drop bars and it's a u shaped support around the perimeter of a
handlebar bag. Rivendell stocks that rack and has 13 of them in stock as
of 9/22/16. Various bag makers offer a bag to fit that rack. There is a
Sackville model that Riv also has in stock, but they only have two of the
bags.

http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/r8.htm?CartID=6

My plug is for the rack itself. It's astonishingly nice. It looks like it
should be super floppy but it's surprisingly solid for a typical handlebar
bag application. If you own, or ever think you might own a typical 'road
bike', that doesn't have much in the way of attachment points for a normal
front rack, the old F-15 is a fantastic option. I'm running mine on a
Black Mountain Cycles road bike. Not only is it way lighter and way less
expensive than a traditional rack + decaleur setup, but it puts the
handlebar bag in exactly the same place relative to the handlebars no
matter which bike I put it on.

In my opinion, anybody in the habit of setting up various bikes with
various bags should have an F-15 laying around, hence the plug. Riv has 13
of the racks but only 2 of the bags to fit it. Riv is selling the rack for
$78. The other two online US vendors that have the F-15 rack in stock are
asking $95 and $120 for it. Now's a good time to buy an F-15 rack, (it's
like picking up free money at $78) and treat yourself to a bag to fit it
when one comes up for sale, or have Ruthworks make you a custom to match
your bike.

[RBW] Re: Surly Pacer sizing

2016-09-22 Thread Garth

PBH is no absolute either, no method is ! This may be the most
difficult thing to understand because people are so used to having other
people tell them what they should want or be like. There are many variables
of why a frame may be "just right" or not, some you can't even put into
words let alone any "formula". I look at bike fit as quite personal, as in
know thyself as no one else does or possibly could.

I say forget about trying to "fit into" a certain bike or frame. We all
know what we really want but for whatever no good reason it is self denied
by "settling" for what we don't completely want. Sorry, "money" is not a
limiting factor, it's just another excuse which amounts to nothing. This
is not good or bad, it is what it is, not much as the perfect ride is all
that matters !

[RBW] Re: Surly Pacer sizing

2016-09-22 Thread Richard Rios
I'm with Grant sizing wise 100% on this one about not letting top tube length
lead you around to much by the nostrils. My experience with the top tube length
has been it is pretty easy to adjust for with a shorter / longer stem and
depending on how high your bars are much of that length can be easily eaten up.
Also if you do happen to look at the geometry chart on surly's website you will
notice that the ETT lengths in the 56 58 sizes of cross check and pacer are
very similar. Doesn't really make sense to compare the smaller sizes to middle
and larger range. Bikes grow taller much more than they grow longer as sizes go
up. Also surly did a little write up about how smaller frames will end up with
longer top tubes due to a number of factors. It's worth the read. So again IMHO
either frame should have you close enough depending on what you are looking
for. Sportier clubish fastish rides 56, bit more distance / comfort oriented
but still spirited 58... If I were you I'd personally lean toward the 58. Again
just my .02 and I still think the 60 would be worth considering !)

[RBW] Re: Surly Pacer sizing

2016-09-22 Thread Belopsky
It's best to look at the geometry chart to compare, however. The pacer is
not like the crosscheck or straggler. I can easily ride a 52 pacer, but a
54 straggler was a bit too long - 54 straggler is a 563.3 top tube, 52
pacer is a 540 top tube. 54 pacer is a 555..

I did it last year, from Fort Worth to DC, for my C&O tour. I'm planning to do
it again this year, pretty soon, for my GAP tour. It was especially easy for
me to have my daughter able to receive it at the other end. I think Bike
Flights would be less expensive, but much more disassembly/assembly is required.

[RBW] Re: FS: late 80's KHS Montana mountain bike frameset/headset plus parts

2016-09-22 Thread franklyn
An update and repost for sale: (pictures
 of the frameset as
well as how it's current built up)

I have this frameset or complete bike for sale. I got the frameset partly
because it's a curiosity, and partly because it was inexpensive. The
stickers/decals say it's a KHS Montana Pro. I did some research on the
internet and figured out that it's probably a late 80's KHS Montana, but
whether the decals and paint are original I am not certain.

Here are some numbers: 21" (~54cm) seat tube center-to-top; 23" (~ 58cm)
top tube center-to-center; It has 1" top tube, 28.6mm seat tube and 31.8
down tube. The fork has a set of mid-fork braze-ons for racks. and the
frameset has front and rear eyelets at the dropouts, as well as at the seat
stays for racks/fenders. it uses 26.8mm seatpost.

The frameset itself is in very good shape--straight, no ding or dent. The
paint has some chip in it, but overall the paint is in good shape too. I
think the faded pink is a nice color for bikes this vintage. A couple of
interesting details. There is a plate on top of the chainstays and behind
the bottom bracket shell. It doesn't have a tap for fenders. Perhaps it's a
mud shield. It also has a pump peg behind the seat tube. Finally, it has
braze-ons for U-brakes or rollercam brakes.

I have respaced the rear drop out to 130mm and installed the headset. It
uses an older standard steerer tube with inner diameter of 21.1mm (or
.833"). I am including a Sunlite "dirt drop" high-rise style stem as part
of the sale.

It takes 26" rim-brake wheels. I built it up with 650b wheels as a drop-bar
touring bike/commuter. I originally intended to use wider 650b tires such
as the Schwalbe Thunder Burt, but they wouldn't fit. In this configuration,
it can take 650b 42mm tires (the pictures show it with Panaracer Pari Moto
42mm tires) with fenders. It can probably take 650b 48mm tires without
fenders. With 26" wheels, it can take much wider tires. I am selling
because I got a more purpose-built 650b frameset that can take 50mm+ tires.

Price for frame/fork/headset/stem/U-brake/Titec 26.8mm seatpost/frame pump
is $95 + shipping (using bikeflight)

Additional components to be sold with the frameset, but not separately (all
prices do not include shipping):
- Cockpit: Velo Orange Course 44cm handlebar + Origin8/Tektro aero brake
levers + Suntour barcon shifters for additional $45
- Front regular OR mini V-brakes: $15
- Altus triple crankset (170mm 46/36/26T) + Shimano front derailleur +
Deore DX rear derailleur: $30
- 650b wheelset: Velocity hub 135mm laced to Weinmann Zac19 rim and Shimano
LX front hub laced to Velocity Synergy rim $75
- SKS half frame bag (see in picture) basically new; good capacity; $15

(pictures of the
frameset as well as how it's current built up)

Contact me if you are interested,

Franklyn
Berkeley, CA
