My caliper (Paul racer) Sam fits 700x50 tires just fine, and I've run 42s with
fenders just fine as well. Neither felt like I was pushing it.

Jim don't be afraid! it will be obvious if you have not adjusted it
properly, too loose and it will wobble, too tight and you won't be able to
steer, both of which you will be able to catch and adjust right away.

if you get really frustrated, try and find an open workshop day at a

My Rivs have all had 32 mm flats on the headset bits. I'd get a 32 mm
adjustable cup wrench, and spend the change on a big, decent quality
adjustable wrench which is also useful for bb assembly removal and hitting
the dog. (And for many other things; just kidding about the dog; he's
already cowed and obeys me implicitly.)

Re: [RBW] XL frames and 650b experiences

2016-11-06 Thread Eric Daume
Here are some pictures of my 25" Raleigh Technium 650B conversion;

https://bikingtoplay.blogspot.com/2016/09/raleigh-technium-650b-conversion.html

After riding it for a bit, I like the wheels and tires, like the tires,
hate the brakes, and am ambivalent about the handling.

The frame is nice and flexy and fun, the wheels are tough, and the tires
are supple. The Odyssey brakes are junk--no feel, and I can't even skid the
rear tire, they're so weak. In fact, when I tried to skid the rear tire,
the brake just flexed up to where I could hear it hit the tire. I like the
handling in general, but this morning's trip to the library with a few
small hardbacks in my handlebar bag wasn't a model of delightful handling:
I could definitely feel some wind up and delay as I initiated turns. Maybe
I'm just trying to justify a Soma Grand Randonneur.

Here are some pictures of my first conversion, a Trek 620:

https://bikingtoplay.blogspot.com/2014/12/trek-620-650b-conversion.html

This one worked out well overall, but awful Pacenti rims killed it. I could
not reliably get a tire to set without pinching the tube on those.

Yes, all 1-inch threaded headsets use a 32mm adjusting nut. You only need one
32 wrench for the adjuster, the locknut can be snugged down with a standard

[RBW] headset adjustment

Hi all,

I was going to attempt a headset adjustment, which I've never done. I need
to buy two wrenches to do the job. It's probably obvious to others, but I
can't figure out what size wrench to buy to adjust the headsets on my
Rivendells. Are they all going to be 32 mm? That appears to be the most
common size.

Thanks in advance for any answers.

[RBW] A Clemiversary, or, Lost and Found Again: A Clem's Journey

2016-11-06 Thread ian m
Clem Smith Jr. arrived this month last year! I threw mine together in one
long night after work, cannibalizing other bikes, and by the next day it
was already the most comfortable bike I had ever ridden. Smooth and stable,
this Clem rode with aplomb down steep hills and flew over mangled city
streets. I had never felt so IN a bicycle, and at high speeds leaning into
turns it instilled a confidence I never had when being ON a bicycle.
Vintage mountain bikes of Northern California are for me something of the
Platonic Ideal of bicycles, so of course I had to have Clem reflect that.
The og bullmoose bars are a perfect fit, giving a bit more aggressive
position than the super upright boscos that were on the test bike I rode at
RivHQ. While Clem's (who if the DIY decal kit had come to fruition may have
been renamed Mount Clemalpais or Mt Clem) long chainstays make it tough to
lift the front end over obstacles, it still feels at home on path and
trail, with large tires rolling over everything but the biggest roots. This
being primarily a commuter with on and off road touring aspirations, I
initially installed the trusty Pass & Stow rack, but have since found the
ride feels a bit nicer without the large rack which may stiffen the front
end a bit too much.

   Clem v.1

The best use for a large and strong front rack, plus fat tires to help
smooth out those streets.

Equally at home off road, even when the trails are a little icy

   Clem in full camping regalia

This July Clem was stolen. The cable lock was cut while on my front porch.
What a disaster. But all was not lost! One long week later my incredible
partner found Clem leaning against a frat house, U lock still holding the
frayed cable on the frame, flat front tire, coffee mug still in bottle
cage. She walked right up to the house, took it back, and locked it to her
bike until a friend came to pick it up and return it home. What a day!
Moral of the story: never trust a cable lock. Since then I have replaced
the triple with a wide/low double, regressed to 8 speeds, replaced the P
with small Nitto/Wald combo, built a generator wheel with SP hub and Atlas
rim and connected that to the Lumotec Eyc. Great combo for budget generator
setup, although the flickering at low speed can be a bit annoying. There's
an easy fix for that though

   Steel

All in all, I couldn't be happier with the Clem. After scouring craigslist
and this forum for close to a year, hoping I would find a nice used
Atlantis or Hunq at a price I could justify, I thought I'd never be able to
own a Rivendell. The Clem puts that dream within reach for those of us
unable to afford those models, and in no way feels cheap or like a lesser
bike. I hope they continue to offer the Clem in some form or another,
because they are very much a gateway Rivendell for those who weren't sure
the Rivs are all their fans say they are (they are).

Ian, currently dreaming of a 650b Atlantis

[RBW] XL frames and 650b experiences

2016-11-06 Thread Abcyclehank
Just completed my fleet by purchasing a Joe/Joe 68cm Riv Custom frameset.
Considering a 650b build possibly due to severe overlap of ride options. Plan
to reconfigure the 68cm Atlantis and 64cm Bombadil also. Will constitute my
winter projects here during an uncertain Michigan winter. Currently 60 degrees
on Nov. 6th, loving the extended fall riding season. Not even thinking about
hanging up the classics and dragging out the XXL Moonlander yet.

What specific experiences have fellow listers had with conversions?

[RBW] Clem Smith Jr with Alternate Handlebars? - Choco-moose

2016-11-06 Thread Nels Sorenson
Soma Oxford on a 52 frame for me. I also found the original Boscos a little too
long and trimmed them a half inch. Needed more room especially with bar end
shifters. The Somas work well, no more thigh strike. I have a pair of used
Albatross bars coming to see how they compare as they are slightly wider than
the Somas. I have wide shoulders so more width would be welcome.

[RBW] FS: Retroshift 1x10 Shifter Set and Retroshift Burd RD

2016-11-06 Thread Geeter
This shifter setup has only a few hundred miles on it.

The shifters use Shimano pull ratio so will work with any 10spd Shimano
derailleur as far as I know. Same goes for the RD - should work with any
10spd Shimano shifters.

Asking $140 Shipped

email me off the board for info!

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne vs Heron Touring ... GO

2016-11-06 Thread Christopher Cote
Hi all, this is my first post on this board, I've been lurking for a while.
I recognize a lot of names from when I was active in the old iBOB mailing
list years ago. Anyway, I signed up here because I'm considering a
replacement for my Heron Touring. It's featued on Cyclofiend's "current
classics" page here:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2005/cc056-christophercote1105.html. I like
the bike, it is comfortable and rides great, but I am in the "I don't like
cantilever brakes" camp. I've had a few different brakes on it, each one
lauded when it came out as the best canti that solves all the problems with
cantis, but they all squeal, shudder, and don't brake as well as the
calipers on my other bikes. I was considering the Hillborne. So, this
review is a real eye-opener. I'm going to have to give this some
consideration.
