...and a bike lock!! Nice work, Tony!!
Say, how did you run the wiring to your rear dynolight?

I usually run small Berthoud front bag loads. I plant bike locks at my favorite
places so I don't have to carry the locks on the bike.

Are you riding to work in the frigid weather Thursday and Friday?

I don't have a gearing answer, but you're absolutely right about putting a nice

[RBW] Re: Where are the Brompton Owners or A Case of the Novembers

2016-12-14 Thread Jeremy Tavan
As a frequent Brompton-plus-Caltrain commuter who has owned both a 3-speed
and a 6-speed Brompton (the 3-speed was stolen, the 6-speed was all the
shop had in stock to replace it), I can say I would be fully comfortable
using just the 3-speed for my sort of use. I spend almost all my time in
the lower geared cog, only moving to the smaller cog for brief high-speed
rides down an underpass ramp. YMMV, of course.

Re: [RBW] Re: Where are the Brompton Owners or A Case of the Novembers

2016-12-14 Thread Eric Norris
This is just me, but ... I found the stock gearing on my 6-speed Brompton to be
a little too low. The middle gear on the IGH (2nd gear, I guess) is direct
drive, which is the most efficient. However, pedaling at a normal cadence when
cruising on the flats required me to shift to the 3rd (highest) gear on the IGH.

To fix this, I purchased a 2-tooth larger chainring from Clever Cycles, which
raised the gears enough that I can cruise in 2nd position on the IGH. 3rd
position is saved for downhills or other fast sections. Low gears in the 1st
IGH position are still low enough for me.

If you're riding in the City, you might need lower gears than I do, in which
case the -12% might be best. As always, YMMV.

P.S. If your wife insists that you need a bike ... she's right!

I think they would. I have Soma C-Lines on my QuickBeam, and they're fine,

fit them, but with almost no margin for rim wobble.

Re: [RBW] Re: New bike day! R05C0 8U883

2016-12-14 Thread Steve Palincsar

On 12/14/2016 07:24 PM, Bill Lindsay wrote:

Steve asked about bike security at BART stations

I think you asked because you think I'm going to park my new bike at
BART, which is the opposite of the use-case. People park a bike at
BART for one of two reasons:

1. I drive to BART. BART to destination station. Unlock parked bike
and ride it to work
2. I bike to BART and park my bike. I BART to destination station.
 I walk to work.

Neither of those is my use-case. My use case is: Ride from front
door to BART. BART to Union City Station. Ride to office.

You mean BART lets you take the bike on the train at rush hour? Far cry
from the DC Metro! Off hours only here.

Not that I have all that much experience riding Metro with a bike - did
it maybe 3 times, all tiring: very hard to keep the bike stable just
standing there, even with fairly empty trains. And the first time,
riding into town at 7 pm for a Moonlight Monument ride, trains still
pretty crowded, was really memorable. The guy behind me was ranting to
his girlfriend about how he was going to kill his supervisor at work.
More and more lurid descriptions of blood, dismemberment, knives and
guns -- and all the while I'm there rocking from side to side
desperately trying to keep the bike from bumping into this guy, white
knuckles on the brake lever, lest he go off on me.

To answer your question which does not apply to me, bike security
varies station to station. Some stations have nice lockers you can
pay for. Some have crappy lockers you can pay for. Some have
supervised free bike parking inside the station. Some have nothing
useful. I've never once parked a bike at BART.

My office has nice bike lockers.

That explains a great deal, and I feel much relieved.

I agree with you there. I was waiting outside someone's house ahead of the
arranged time to buy something, only to have him text me to forget it, his wife
just sold it. Only cost me half a day to get there - I was predictably
frustrated. I wouldn't leave until he explained himself to me!

Re: [RBW] Re: New bike day! R05C0 8U883

2016-12-14 Thread Justin August
The free valet parking at my BART (Fruitvale Station) is excellent.
The BikeLink lockers at West oakland are well used and I've not heard (cue
report of) of a daytime work hours theft.
There is ample before the payment turnstile parking at most. There is sparse
after the turnstile parking at some.

I've only used the valet parking - excellent as I said - and have a BikeLink
card that I'm too scared to test using my Saluki or wife's Betty.

I often put my Saluki in my wife's trunk, carpool from East Oakland (Maxwell
Park) to San Francisco (Western Addition) and then ride home at night to BART
in SF and then ride the 7-20 miles home depending on route and preference. So
that's my "BART Bike."

Re: [RBW] Re: New bike day! R05C0 8U883

2016-12-14 Thread Bill Lindsay
Steve asked about bike security at BART stations

I think you asked because you think I'm going to park my new bike at BART,
which is the opposite of the use-case. People park a bike at BART for one
of two reasons:

1. I drive to BART. BART to destination station. Unlock parked bike and
ride it to work
2. I bike to BART and park my bike. I BART to destination station. I
walk to work.

Neither of those is my use-case. My use case is: Ride from front door to
BART. BART to Union City Station. Ride to office.

To answer your question which does not apply to me, bike security varies
station to station. Some stations have nice lockers you can pay for. Some
have crappy lockers you can pay for. Some have supervised free bike
parking inside the station. Some have nothing useful. I've never once
parked a bike at BART.

My office has nice bike lockers.

[RBW] New Cheviot

2016-12-14 Thread Les Lammers

I was looking for an all around bike about 9 years ago. Not much out there.
Stumbled on Riv. Took a chance and got a Bleriot. The 650B's were calling
me. I still love it. This spring I pre-ordered a gray Chevoit and it's now
built. I initially had Choco norm bars but they were a bit too upright so I
decided to try 52 CM Soma Sparrow bars. I flipped them and added Ergon cork
grips. The saddle is presently a bit below the bars. Stem is a Nitto
Technomic 60mm. Using Paul Thumbies but may go to the IRD stem shifters to
clear the bars a bit. Tires are 650B Panaracer Messenger 42mm. They measure
41mm on Velocity Synergy rims. Not at all bad for a $30 tire. Saddle is an
older B17 that I sent to SA to have a cut out done. Installed a Nitto R14
on the rear. A Nitto M18, back ordered, and small Wald basket will go on
the front.

I like the Sparrow bars and the Ergon grips are very comfortable. The
cockpit is upright but not too much so. This is my first non drop bar bike.
Why did I wait so long? I need to do a long shakedown ride and will post
afterwards.

I hate it when people do that. If I've made the appointment with a buyer, I'm

[RBW] WTB- Nitto dirt drop stems, mt-8 and/or mt-10

2016-12-14 Thread ant ritchey
As it goes, I've previously owned both of these stems. Sold 'em via this
here list. Par for the course- an experiment is now underway and it's got
me thinking...

My LBS has had them back ordered for what seems like forever via Merry
Sales so now I'm reaching out here.

Looking for both the 8cm and 10cm reach iteration. Older, shorter
variations of the DD just won't do, as I've gotta jack the bars up as high
as I possibly can.

PM if you've got something. Thanks a bunch, bunch.
