[RBW] Re: Off topic question: portable cd players

2017-01-16 Thread Bill M.
How small do you really need? Any DVD player will play audio CD's and some
of them are pretty compact. Google says you should be able to pick one up
at Target or Walmart in the $30 range. I'd rather use a player designed
for domestic use than a portable, if only for the remote control.

These days I rip all of my CD's, store the files on a small laptop and
stream them to the stereo via wifi.

you might include "Playing for Change" into your rotation, if you havent
alredy. Ripple is a good start.

it is available on you tube and fun to watch the musicians work.

Re: [RBW] Re: Brass Bells

2017-01-16 Thread Eric Norris
I found this product and used it to make the tired paint on an older bike look
a lot better:

https://www.amazon.com/Wipe-New-Rust-oleum-R6PCRTLKIT-Applicator/dp/B0160VUYF8

$18 on Amazon, and it’s super easy to use. It would certainly add a layer of
protection to a brass bell.

I have Crane Karen on 5 bikes. They all come coated, but the lacquer
essentially evaporates away. The more you rub them, and the more time they
spend in the elements, the sooner it goes.

Thanks for all the replies. I did a bit of snooping around on the Web
myself and came across a product made by Everbrite called ProtectaClear
that looks to be exactly what y'all described only with a higher silicon
oxide content just as Bill says. What's kinda interesting is that I have 2
or 3 of these bells on different bikes and only this one seems to be
unprotected; the others definitely have been coated with a sealer. Begs
the question, why would they offer a brass product like these bells that is
obviously going to get exposed to all kinds of variable environmental
conditions without sealing it?

BTW, Bill, I thought about possible "beausage" repercussions before I
posted this issue, but as you say, I felt it was beyond regular wear and
tear and belonged in the unkempt category. Others may have different
views...

[RBW] FS- older Lewis and Clark trail maps - now FREE for postage

2017-01-16 Thread M D Smith
Ok - no takers...

I don't want to throw these out. They are now free for postage. Should be
$6.45.

I'm going to the PO tomorrow. If anyone wants them and can get me PayPal by
mid day tomorrow they are yours.

-Mike

Original post:
"Hello-

I have some older (2005) Adventure Cycling Lewis and Clark trail maps. I ended
up never taking the trip. They are obviously outdated, but I believe ACA has
updates on their website, and if someone lives or visits up there, they may
show you some good routes to ride.

I have maps 3 to 7, from Pierre, South Dakota to Astoria, Oregon.

ACA sells the current ones for over 15 bucks each. I'm looking for $20 plus
shipping for all five, which should be $6.45 USPS.

I'm moving and don't want to cart them around any more and don't want to
recycle them either.

Cheers- Mike"

[RBW] FS: LN VO Touring Pedals + Stainless Toe-Clips + Straps

2017-01-16 Thread Jack K
Hey Riv-folk,

I have a set of very new VO touring pedals that are surplus to my needs and
hoping someone here can use them. They have very few miles on the, maybe a
couple hundred. The only sign of use is some scratches on the very tip of
the top of the toe clip, where they touched the ground before the pedals
was flipped right-side up when starting after a stop. The set includes the
following (with VO website pricing in paren's):

   - VO Touring Pedals ($55) -- super smooth sealed bearings
   - VO Laminated Toestraps ($25) -- near perfect color match to a honey
   Brooks
   - VO Stainless Toe-clips ($13) -- genuine shiny metal

All this pedal goodness totals $93 from VO. Looking for $55 + $5 shipping
to anywhere in the ConUS.

Cheers and safe riding!

[RBW] Hunq-ish Romanceur build with Riv Bullmoose bars

2017-01-16 Thread Philip Kim
If you got the money no reason not go Paul's, but TRPs are lighter and have
dual action calipers which can be adjusted separately. Provides more even wear,
and you're not essentially bending the rotor to one arm to stop. It can also be
easily adjusted by the cable barrel adjuster as pads wear. So would go TRPs for
ease of adjustment, lighter, and even pad wear which puts it ahead but not by
much. But it's really ahead of Paul's because it's also 1/3 the cost.

[RBW] Re: Hunq-ish Romanceur build with Riv Bullmoose bars

2017-01-16 Thread Zach Duval
I waffled a bit between the two, honestly, but chose the Romanceur for its road
to trail capability. I'm building it up first as a MTB (inspired by Benedict's
proto), mostly because I've long been curious to try the Bullmooses for trail
riding, but it'll likely evolve into more of a roadish trail bike. I wanted
that versatility, and as a lighter rider (145 pounds or so), I figured the plus
tires aren't necessary.

I would use bike flights. i travel frequently and this is how my Riv

Bike Flights uses FedEx and you can select a FedEx Office location to ship

[RBW] Off topic question: portable cd players

2017-01-16 Thread Garth
How funny indeed when even the cd player seems to be "relagated" to cheapo
status. Indeed .everything "new" seems to kinda suck ! Ahahahaahaha.

And yes, there is relavence here, it is like the relagating steel in favor of
carbon because it is "supposed" to be "better", or ditching friction shifting
because indexed is supposed to be "better". Disc brakes supposed to be
"better" you get the idea, it never ends, and ironically, neither can you
find where it began.

Yeah I would check eprey or maybe etsy. Remember too, you pulg in any cd
player that has a headphone output to your powered speakers, be it the small
personal kind, a boombox or even home cd player. Whatever you have.

[RBW] Easiest way to transport Saluki on Southwest

2017-01-16 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
I don't know what the fee is on Southwest, but I think Rinko usually puts the
bike in a soft case, which would seem pretty risky. Often times an LBS will
have a hard case that they may rent to you. Or they could box it for you or
sell a regular cardboard bike box. Or since it's domestic, the cheapest option
may be to box and ship to an LBS via BikeFlights. I'm guessing that would be
cheaper than airline fees.

[RBW] Re: ghost shifting and the clementine

2017-01-16 Thread Garth
Seems to from using friction shifting forever that a larger diameter shifter,
like the mountain bike/SunTour thumbshifters , are less prone to loosening.
The smaller road/SunTour Sprint style were always requiring slight
retightening. The only time I seem to need to adjust the ST large thumbies is
at the change of seasons sometimes with much different density of air. When Riv
showed they were making a new shifter that looked like the old I assumed it was
going to be a larger diameter like the original mtb style, but the innards are
the same as the road. Oil well

Sky, I would use those Falcon shifters first before you buy anything else.
Sure, the ratchet is plastic inside but so what, I bet it will stay put. I have
both the Falcon and Sunrace thumbies as backups, but have never needed them as
my ST pairs just keep working.
