[RBW] How tall is too tall for a 55cm Appaloosa?

2017-02-08 Thread panog
I'm 6'-1'' with a PBH of 91.5 taken, as they say, "to the bone". Some time ago
I test rode a Choko-Moose 62 and found the size very doable. The bike looks big
and tall standing next to it but the choko-moose tames it when you ride it. A
PBH of 91-91.5cm corresponds to the very end of size 58 and the very beginning
of size 62. Size 55 is meant to be for a PBH of up to 87cm. I think it may be
small for a 6-footer specially when set with upright bars.

I'm 6' and I ride the 55 Appaloosa. It feels big, rides big, is big, and is
great. My PBH is 86.

What sizes are you in other bikes?

[RBW] How tall is too tall for a 55cm Appaloosa?

2017-02-08 Thread drew
No expert, but 55 seems way small. I'd ride a 55 and I'm 5'10 (ride a 54 hunq
and 56 Sam for reference). I have to think 58 would be more comfortable for
most riding. You could always use a shorter stem if you wanted to use dirt drop
bars...

2017-02-08 Thread C.J. Filip

In a blatant attempt to dredge up the past, add to the knowledge base and
show a bad, highly edited/filtered picture...

A 60cm canti Saluki with 58mm Honjo fluted fenders mated with 42mm
Hetres/Babyshoe Pass tires!

The rear fender required considerable indentation/dimpling at the
chainstays. Mild indentation was required at the fork crown.

Fenderline is a ways from perfect, but couldn't help myself from sharing!

[RBW] How tall is too tall for a 55cm Appaloosa?

2017-02-08 Thread A. Nostuh
I know Riv headquarters tends towards recommending larger sizes and it works
well for some but not all.

That said, I'm 6'1 1/2 and long limbs no torso.
and have no idea what my PBH is, and I get different numbers each time I
measure.

I kind of dig the "dirt drop" style with more seatpost and stem extension, and
not having the top tube all up my junk

Also, the 58cm, while very pretty with double TT, looks ginormous long reach
for a dirt drop bar/stem

Also consider the standover height will still get pretty high with big 50mm
tires on 29er wheels

Anyone on here on the taller end of the 55cm Appaloosa spectrum?

Re: [RBW] Re: Awesome new bars on Blue Lug Blog.

2017-02-08 Thread Bill M.

That silver bar is a Scott DH, an 80's vintage triathlon aerobar. IIRC
"DH" was for the inspiration, the aero tuck of a downhill ski racer.
Here's how it should look complete with armrests and bridge piece. The
bends were supposed to provide hand positions like conventional tops and
drops as well as a laid out aero position.

My friend had one on his Mercian for years. I hated the thing myself.

I'm assuming you're talking about the ones that look like moustache bars
with a lot of extra forward reach in the curves, and that fit mtb style
levers? Interesting for sure.

I have never ordered from them but I think that, if you're in the States,
it is easier to do from the fairweather site.

Here's food for thought, though:

I was just recently wanting something like that - a moustache with the
primary position being the one at rear part of the bar. I'd like to try
chocos, but can't afford them at the moment, and am kind of concerned
about how narrow they are. Those blue lug bars don't look much, if any,
wider ... and they have the unfortunate 31.8 clamp area.

I happened to have an extra Surly Open 40mm rise bar. I turned it upside
down and installed it, and I think it is going to be AWESOME. (won't know
for sure until the snow melts.) It looks a LOT like that bar. It has all
the grip positions of a moustache/albastache bar. takes mountain bike brake
levers, AND is actually wide enough for a change, at 666mm! And probably
cheaper, too. It's not silver, but it will be wrapped with handlebar tape
anyway.

Going off-topic now but, when Riv finishes up securing and finalizing their
range of proprietary handlebar designs, this is what I hope they end up
doing: adding multiple, especially wider, versions of each. If it makes
sense to have different widths of noodles and boscos, then it makes sense
to have different widths of albatross(ish), chocos and albastaches too,
right?

[RBW] FS/FT- 23" Stumpjumper, F/F & extras -$225-

2017-02-08 Thread ant ritchey
Cross-posted (as usual) to the RBWOG:

For sale or trade- my Stumpjumper.

A link to my CL posting with some photos- BIG RED

These photos aren't the greatest. Even in ideal lighting, my now-stone-aged
iphone 5 really struggles...argh...
I'd like to get $225. Buyer pays shipping w/ Bikeflights. Should be around
$50. Got a box ready.
Holler if you have any questions, if I left anything out or if you'd like
to see more photos.
PM/offlist if you're interested and thank fer checkin' it out!
Sincerely- Ant Ritchey in Portland OR

TRADE INTERESTS
heard rumors of that mythical 25" Stumpy...
bikepack-y bags, Sackville stuff, big n' tall h'bar bag, aluminum Albatross
bars, 130mm Technomic, Dia Compe 750 brakes, Honjo H95's, Pass & Stow,
Schmidt hub, frames- 24"+ mtb/64c road...

The following is just the copy from the CL posting:
Steel Tig. Seat tube- 23" center to top. Top tube- 23" center to center.

At long last- giving up the too-small-for-me ghost. Damn. A "Guards Red"
stumpy, kinda my dream. No dings, no dents. Some scratches but overall
still pretty sharp looking. The components were very clean and I'd be
surprised if it had been ridden more than a hundred miles. I've gone over
the whole bike, cleaned every speck of dirt, etc. BB shell and steerer
threads are in immaculate condition. All brazeons intact and fully operable.

After doing a bit of panning between older Specialized catalog scans, the
MOMBAT site and Google image searching..I've decided this to be an '87.
Canti front, U-brake rear. Plenty of eyelets, including fender mounts on
the bridges. Horizontal drop outs (Wanted to make this my flashy, commuting
single speed rig). Just stuck 56mm actual 26" tires in there, lots of
clearance in back, would easily accept 60mm actualcould probably
squeeze up to a 60mm (rim depending, obvi) in front or more if you scallop
the steerer tube a bit. Again, this was my intention after mounting 2.35
Super Motos and seeing that they'd need a smidge more room for personal
comfort. As-is a perfect candidate for the Compass Rat Trap Pass.

Included in the sale: brakes- one virtually new silver Tektro CR720 front,
original Shimano U rear in very good condition; w/ pads & hangers) 2
matching red Specialized-branded bottle cages (bearing some minimal paint
chipping), chrome Specialized headset and seatpost (it's a 26.4, kinda
scratched up & reads "Strong Japan").

[RBW] Thanks for Breaking on a Dime Tip!

2017-02-08 Thread Surlyprof
Keven had suggested folding over a piece of sandpaper to achieve that
thickness. That, combined with one of Grant's blug tips always worked for me.
Once I have the sandpaper in there, I strap a section of inner tube on the
brake lever to hold it closed while I tighten down the brake shoe bolt. Works
pretty well.

[RBW] Re: FS - Compass 32mm and 48mm Tires

2017-02-08 Thread Philip Kim
Chris,

They fit my Cheviot with Paul Racers just fine on A23 rims. Probably
could've done SKS fenders by cutting them up so they don't go under the
brake arms. Brake clearance was more of an issue with the Tektro 559's.

Currently also have SBH's on my BDB Pelican on Synergy Rims. They measure
at 44.5mm. the BDB Pelican has the Grand Bois fork crown which is 53mm, and
I believe the earlier Ramblers use the Pacenti PBP crown which is 56.5mm
clearance.

I'm going to mount them up to my Pacenti Brevet Rims and I'll take
measurements later tonight. My custom is also coming within the next couple
of weeks, and using the Pacenti PBP crown and Paul racers. I can see if
they will fit under the fenders then.

2017-02-08 Thread Tony DeFilippo
You know I just pulled them off the rim last night and dont think I ever
measured them. They definitely didnt run over 48mm on my bike as I easily
fit them with fenders on my Bombadil.

2017-02-08 Thread Pondero
Tony,

Did the 48s actually measure 48 for you? ...and for which rim?

I've been sort of wondering if these would fit my Rambler without fenders.
My guess is yes. I'm probably too indecisive at this point to be your
buyer. Just pondering...

[RBW] Re: Thanks for Breaking on a Dime Tip!

2017-02-08 Thread Garth
Mark, what I expressed about brake noise is from my own experiences, not from
someone's book or web article about someone elses. Your assumptions of what I
said are yours, not mine.

As for Steve he cannot help himself. The mockery of not understanding is
unbearable indeed.
