By the way, there is a ridiculous disconnect between the prices of Carridice
stuff ordered from the UK vs the US. Look at SJS and others. And that was
before Brexit demolished the pound.

[RBW] Re: rear axle placement/adjuster screw removal

2017-04-10 Thread Bill Lindsay
Yes, you can remove those screws if you want to. The only purpose of those
screws is to give you something to register the rear wheel against before
you secure it in place. Without them present, you just need to
deliberately put the wheel where you want it before securing it.

[RBW] Re: rear axle placement/adjuster screw removal

2017-04-10 Thread Ed Carolipio
When I had that type of rear end on a geared bike and pulled the axle all
the way back, the drive side of the axle tended to slip forward under load.
If you look at your frame from the rear, the rear dropouts aren't
absolutely parallel; rather they taper out a bit as you go rearward. In
that rearmost position, your QR skewer may be working against too much
tension from the frame, i.e. your rear dropout distance may be much larger
than the spec for your hub.

Things to counter that effect are an "internal cam" type skewer, where the
lever enters the cam body perpendicular to the axle, and shimming spacers
on the axle.

Re: [RBW] rear axle placement/adjuster screw removal

2017-04-10 Thread Patrick Moore
I often, if not always, removed the screws with no ill effects to
derailleur performance. I think that the screws are placed at the dropouts
to allow easy wheel side-to-side alignment, which (assuming your frame is
not wildly out of whack) the ends of the dropouts also do.

Do they have other purposes?

I bought dropout screws for my 2 Riv Road fixies, but I never bothered to
install them, preferring to gauge chain tension and wheel alignment by
thumb and eye -- easy enough!

Re: [RBW] Re: book of possible interest to Rivendell riders

2017-04-10 Thread Patrick Moore
Way back in my Bangalore days, age 11 and 12, I got interested in and
practiced "italic" penmanship and "gothic" lettering, and even had a
broad-nibbed fountain pen or 2 and a boxed set of caligraphy nibs with
holder, along with an illustrated manual or 2. Odd, since specimens of my
everyday handwriting from the time are not only illegible, they are untidy.
But I used to enjoy being a crypto medieval scribe, and even dipped a toe
into half uncial.

Now, a fountain pen is largely a matter of comfort, since I can write with
one without cramping; improvement in legibility is a welcome side effect.

 History: For 18 months, 6th and 7th forms, I went to St Joseph's, a
Jesuit prep in Bangalore, where we copied teachers' dictation into cheap
notebooks and regurgitated it on tests. The only writing instrument was the
fountain pen, and all the boys used the cheapest ones possible, basically
hollow plastic tubes that unscrewed in the middle, with nibs. You unscrewed
the tube, filled the big end with a dropper, and screwed it back together,
whereupon the ink would leak from nib and body, and you'd wipe your hand on
the whitewashed wall or on your trousers. I may have introduced space age
American tech with cheap ball point pens. And the priests used 2' long
lengths of slender bamboo as persuaders, though I as the sole American got
by with frowns and finger waggings.

Re: [RBW] Re: book of possible interest to Rivendell riders

2017-04-10 Thread Tim Butterfield
I started in 2005 and have a small collection of fountain pens. My current
favorite is the Namiki/Pilot Custom 823 amber demonstrator. It is piston
filled with a large ink chamber. The prior favorite was a wine red Conway
Stewart Appellation by Kevin Cheng. It had great balance and wrote
wonderfully, but was limited by the cartridge converter ink capacity. Some
other notables are the Waterman Sterling Edson and Conway Stewart Sterling
Duro. There are some other nice pens in the collection, but I have bought
and sold enough that I cannot remember what's current.

I have not gotten into the vintage flex nibs. But, one year at the Chicago
pen show, I had the Nakaya nibmeister make me a Nakaya Briar pen w/clip and
a medium stub elastic flex nib. It wrote really well and flexed
wonderfully. For my Cataneo Italic writing, I am currently using Rotring
Art Pens. For more on that style, check here: http://jp29.org/itintro.htm

For inexpensive pens, the Hero 616 can be had in packs. I think I got a 10
pack many years ago for less than $50. They do vary in quality somewhat,
but are hard to beat at the price. The vacuum fill sack also holds a
decent quantity of ink. I have some Parker 51 also and the Hero 616
compares quite favorably given the price difference.

Though I am not currently as active with fountain pens as I once was, the
Fountain Pen Network is a great resource.

John,
The Thunder Burts on there are labeled 2.1.
When I was looking at bikes at Riv and talking with Roman about his, I'm pretty
sure he had Continental 2.3s on his.
These bikes were made with Appaloosa forks and he said they try to match
chainstay clearance to fork clearance when they design bikes.

It won't take a 3" tire but 2.3" and down will cover any of my needs.

I'll admit to having a few fountain pens here.
I've owned them for nearly 3 decades.
Parker, Waterman and Pelikan.
If you care to spring for the gold nibs, they are supposed to be more flexible.
I'm not sure if it's a myth or nor but folklore used to say that you shouldn't
let other people use your fountain pen because the nib breaks in to your own
writing style.
It sounds like an awful good reason to prevent some hamfisted philistine from

has a memory.

For anyone wanting to try making their own quill pen, if you're ever in Vallejo
CA, I'll be happy to give you a macaw feather or two.
If you're shopping for feathers, I would suggest wing feathers over tail
feathers.
Wing feathers take much higher loads than tailfeathers and the shaft is thicker
and heavier as a result.
Unless of course, you are a gold nibbed aficionado, then for sure you'll want
the improved flexibility of a tailfeathered quill.
Just don't let anyone use it after it conforms to your writing style.

[RBW] Re: Car Bike Rack

2017-04-10 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
Just saw a new Yakima hitch mount rack called the Dr. Tray. It holds 2
bikes. They make a 1 bike add-on for a total of 3 bikes. However, like most
tray mount racks it is not fender friendly.

I don't know if Edwin's Yakima Two Timer which is a tray rack with clamps
for the top tube (fender friendly) is the new version or the old version. I
saw the new one at the REI Garage sale a couple of weeks ago. The tag said
the wheel clamps moved around. Sure enough, I could easily move it with my
hand though the knob was tightened full-on. I could see how vibration could
cause the wheel clamps to move around - the strap on the wheel would limit
travel, but the clamp would still inchworm around a bit.

Cheers,

Re: [RBW] Re: Car Bike Rack

2017-04-10 Thread LeahFoy
Friends, let's veer away from anything negative about men. I happen to be a big
fan of men. If I told you about The Greatest Man (not counting Jesus), my late
father-in-law, you would weep at the stories of his kindness. And then there's
the two young men I happen to be raising, oh, their lucky future wives! There
are so many good things in the world because there are good men in it. Nope,
you'll get no man-bashing from me.

I feel perhaps I should lighten up this thread. A video clip of me trying to
mount those bikes on the rack ought to do it. There's me, trying to get
purchase on a sturdy part of the frame. Me, on tippy toes, trying to be taller
so I can lift the Clem higher onto the rack. Me, hoisting the unwieldy Clem
onto the wheel trays, and missing. There's the grating of metal on metal as I
try to figure out what is hung up on what. There's the scritching (if that's
not a word, it should be) of brake levers against my new van's tailgate window.
There's the handlebars, swinging around to bop me in the head during my futzing
with the bike's position. And finally, there's the part where the little
Islabike topples off the rack as I make adjustments and lands wheels up - how
is that even possible, I ask you - in the driveway. It was a mess, but as I
said earlier (lol, right Joe Bernard?), my clothes were cute. The black grease
stripe across my forehead that I discovered later - not as cute.

I'm SURE I could recreate this, hahahaha!

Happy Monday, my friends!

2017-04-10 Thread Patrick Moore
Where did this "ask directions" thread pop out from? I'd like to join.
Really, I missed it; it's not from Leah.

Directions: what's the big deal? I always ask and have always asked
directions; long ago my girlfriend told me, "The other guys I've gone out
with are afraid to ask." My daughter gets embarrassed because when driving
I roll down her window and ask motorists on my right about their rides (if
they are driving interesting vehicles; the most recent, a 1967 BSA Gold
Star 500. I do scare cyclists this way, sometimes).

Why the hell would you be afraid to ask about something?

Tubing aside, presumably the Roadini will also have the signature Rivendell
handling and "feel." I love my Matthews, but I do notice that it lacks that
signature handling of the 5 Rivendells I've owned. (Well, the '95 road
custom didn't possess this fit and feel as much as the other 2 and the Ram

2017-04-10 Thread Patrick Moore
His later book, The World Beyond Your Head, continues the same themes with
a greater focus on the deleterious effects on character of mediating
experience through electronic media.

Crawford is that great oddity -- actually, several oddities:

1. An academic, or academically trained writer, who can write reasonably
clearly and in a way that captures and entertains.
2. An Aristotelian who is not a Thomist.
3. Something of a Stoic, I think, or perhaps his ethics is a mix of
Aristotle, Stoics, and Epicurus.

Thanks, Toshi. I already have a Safari, a Xmas present from my brother who
is a fountain pen connoisseur. He had given me a nice old Parker 51 some 10

dropped it nib down on tile.

The Safari writes very nicely, but it does skip occasionally, whence my

I like black ink, so the J Herbin is also on the list.

Re: [RBW] Re: Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-10 Thread Patrick Moore
Carradice, old versus new, quality: Let me explain: the first Longlflaps I
owned had leather straps so thick that you had to break them in to make
them easy to buckle down. The leather wasn't as good as the best Rivendell
supplies for its Sackvilles, but it was PDG.

The canvas was thicker, and in particular, the wear patch on the bottom of
the Nelson Longflap was made from the same heavy, waxed canvas, not vinyl
or whatever replaced it. The inside of the Longflap was lined with a thin,
supple, greyish cloth.

The Nelson and Camper Longflaps had thick cotton tapes pulling together
interior side flaps instead of drawstrings pulling nylon necks tight; one
may have his own opinion about the drawstring versus the tapes, but one
can't deny that the flaps and the cotton tapes were tightly woven cotton.

The buckles had little rollers on them to make snugging up the straps
easier. The metal was thicker, too.

You could -- I did -- fill one of those old Longflaps with water and, for
15 minutes, nothing would leak.

The last ones I've owned, mostly Juniors, but also a Nelson from the mid
2000s, have inferior leather and canvas. They're still good, but not as
good as the ones Rivendell first sold in the mid '90s.

OTOH, the Saddlesacks are better than any Nelson, old or new, that I have
seen.

You have to see the 1990s Nelson Longflap and compare it to a contemporary
one to understand the difference. I wish I had kept my original Nelson LF,
Camper LF, and Junior.

Into The Value Of Work” by Matthew B. Crawford. The thesis of the book is
making the case that society has place too much value on white-collar work,
and lessened the value of the trades.

The author was working as an executive at a think tank, but ‘gave it all
up’ to go back to working in motorcycle mechanics. It is when describing
some of the current models of Mercedes that have no dipsticks that he drops
a favourite line of mine: “layers of electronic bullshit”.

[RBW] FS/FT Fillet Brazed Bullmoose Nitto

2017-04-10 Thread Timothy Orr
I'm sad to say I'm selling my set of fillet brazed Nitto Bullmoose bars. They
are probably to coolest bars I've ever owned, but my new bike has a long top
tube and I got some Albatross bars to be more upright. I might even eventually
get some Boscos. Anyway, these bars are beautiful and will make any bike
immediately 167% more awesome.

Photos are here:
https://goo.gl/photos/DmA8BGZ3fRJSBrYQ8

See the Riv site for specs and more photos:
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/handlebars-stems/products/nitto-bullmoose-bar-dull-bright-fillet-brazed-150mm-16194

$100 + shipping
I recently shipped another set fro OR to IL for $26. They require a big box. I
doubt you'll find a better deal out there.

I'd consider a trade for a Saddlesack(Medium) a Carradice Camper Longflap,
Nitto Mark's Rack (I could pay a difference if needed to work out a deal).

Cheers,
Tim

I'm not sure why you think the Roadini isn't double butted; the brochure
certainly implies that it is? I'm not sure how /heavy/ the tubing is, but
saying that the tubes are cut from the big-butted end sounds like it's
being made from regular d-b tubing.

[RBW] Rosco Bubbe No, 7 Build

2017-04-10 Thread lconley
Rosco Bubbe No. 7 of the Batch.

Wheels built by me: 36 hole, White Industries Eno hubs, eccentric flip-flop
rear, Wheelsmith DB SS spokes, 700x28 VO Escapade rims, 770x50 grey Big Ben
tires, White Industires 18 tooth freewheel and fixed gear.
Crank: Sugino RD-2, 48 tooth
Chain: KMC SS 1/8"
Pedals: Grey Thin Gripsters
Seat: Brooks B-17 TI - dark green
Seat post: Kalloy? 26.8
Stem: Nitto with twin clamp bolts - anybody know what the model number of
this is?
Bars: VO Postino.
Grips: Rustines Gum on top of Dia Compe
Brake Levers: Dia Compe inverse
Brakes: rear - Tektro R556 sidepull, front - centerpull - Frankenstein mix
of early 70's Dia Compe 610 arms & springs (NOS), modern Dia Compe 750
remainder, Gran Compe Roller straddle hanger, Weinmann quick release

The only reason I got the 50mm tires on was because of the Eno eccentric
hub and front centerpull. I need a shorter hanger than I had to get a
centerpull on the rear - working on it. Or I may use side pulls a smaller
tire that the bike was designed for, but I live the 50s on it now.

As far as I can tell, they're better. Back in the day, the
"traditional" Carradice bags had a big opening with two side flaps with
tie strings that didn't meet in the middle. Now there's a "skirt" with

much less likely with the new style bag to have things fall out.
Otherwise, the materials and construction details appear very similar if

sliver of human history. And the ability of the average citizen to buy,
store, and feed way more bicycles than he or she needs, and endlessly
discuss said bicycles on the internets, is due mainly to the high per
capita use of energy that we have been enjoying for the last century or
 so.
But, as all things do eventually, that high energy consumption, and the
many benefits that come with it, is winding down. That said, I think you
are right that too much of anything, including bicycles, can ultimately
impair contentment and gratitude, and I am doing my best to release some
 of
my bicycle fixation --and some of my bicycles. I just have one or two more
 projects to go here...

Re: [RBW] Re: Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-10 Thread Lee Legrand
Are the carradice saddlebags not made as well today as they were years
ago? I was thinking of getting a nelson saddlebag just to hold my basic
tools for riding. Nothing really big just room for pumps, spare tube,
patches and multi-tool to have in emergencies.

Ah...we didn't even get to the dip pens and script. I took Michael Sull's
workshop at the SF Pen Show last August and it was great and humbling. The
best part was getting a pen and being completely enamored by this master
and his stories. Actually, maybe the best thing was that he gave all of
the students a "nametag" that he wrote out our names and which I now have
framed.

I qualify as a fountain pen geek and agree that the Lamy Safari is a
fine pen. My favorite is the Lamy 2000. It writes as well as any pen can
write, and it's discreet because the nib is hooded so it doesn't attract
 attention.

Japanese make wonderful fountain pens too. Pilot pens are my favorites.
For 10 bucks you get a great pen: the Pilot Kakuno. It's a kid's pen but
writes great. For a similar price the Metropolitan looks great but the ink
dries inside the cap too quickly for my taste.

TWSBI is a Taiwanese maker with great pens at a great price. The pens
write as well as any steel nibs write and the ink filling mechanism has a
high end construction. The 580 or 700 would be my choice around 70 bucks.

Gold nibs are gonna send you over $100 and the aforementioned Lamy 2000
or Pilot Custom Heritage 92 would be my choice.

 Writing is wonderful!

[RBW] Re: Car Bike Rack

2017-04-10 Thread Garth
Well, I am a man, if I don't know where I am going I won't hesitate to ask for
directions. I once visited a small city in Cailfornia I had never been and was
looking for a certain place, I thiuht I jknew where it would be but lo, not
even close was I. So instead of wandering like a fool, hey, there's a
skatepark, there is some guy who looks like he has a clue, so I stop and ask
him and not only was he helpful and all, but I later ran across him and his
wife a few weeks later completley randomly and we didn't recognize each other
at first. After chatting awhile, "Hey, aren't you that guy I asked for
directions that one day ?" "Oh my yes, that was you, I thought you looked
familiar!" he said. Ahahahaahah, a very small world indeed. I ask people
anywhere about where I am at, it doesn't matter the subject, it's just fun
connecting. I don't get that with a computer. Directions from a computer can
be just as misleading as from a person, and a paper map can be just as useless
at times. I mean duh, I am where I am, whatever it may be called, so I am never
lost.

So just because it is repeated in print that men don't like to ask for
directions, it does not make it true. It doesn't matter who you are of any sex
or any other label, some ask some do not, there is room for all in their own
way. The same with every other sweeping generalizations, they are
generalizations and so "generally" don"t say much, but they get you to listen
which is why they are repeated so often. It's like another form of rubber
necking, social rubber necking if you will. Denigrating each other then turning
around and watching the aftermath. There is so much more to life that that !
