Great route. Lots of little towns, which makes it easy to travel light. Plus,
you'll be riding all the best parts of it. If you end up riding through
Nehalem, stop at Buttercup for THE BEST chowder on the Oregon coast. Each
serving is made fresh with super unique flavors. Gluten free and vegan options
too! Also, they have great ice cream.

Cheers!

[RBW] Re: Anyone tried a Copenhagen wheel on their Rivbike??

2017-08-28 Thread Jeremy Tavan
Low power, low weight is exactly what I'm looking for. Just a little
something to help with stop/starts while hauling modest loads (like a kid
on a trailercycle, or a couple bags of groceries) around town. It pushed
all the right buttons for the project I've got in mind. Were I building up
a true cargo bike with a big box or an extended tail, I'd be more
interested in the high power mid drive kits, but for this the elegance of a
direct drive seems suitable. And hey, it's a toy.

I second Doug's recommendations and John's book recommendations. My wife and I
rode the Oregon section in 2008 fully loaded on a Trek 1000 and a skinny
cyclecross bike doing 50 miles a day. We didn't have the right equipment, the
wind was always in our face and I learned why I should have purchased a Brooks
B17. It was still a great ride, great campgrounds and inould do it again just
with a Riv next time. The book was great.

touring through Nueva Helvetia, Uruguay, I met a bicycle collector who went

Benz:

I forgot to mention one way cars. Between major airports, e.g., SJO to
PDX, you can often rent a one way dirt cheap but you have to shop around.
Rental companies often wind up with an excess in one location & shortage at
another. You'd need to check several agencies, and it's luck of the draw
on what you get. But if you're traveling alone, you really don't care and
the a tiny hatchback is perfect for one person + one bike. OTH they could
have a glut of giant SUVs. And of course there's the shear hassle of
driving 700 miles. But it's a decent option to keep in mind.

[RBW] Re: Help from coastal riders: how to deal with sand?

2017-08-28 Thread 'Ann L' via RBW Owners Bunch

Thank you.

Matt B and LBieriot: I'm a fan of fenders, both for prolonging the life of
bike and tires and also for completing the look of the bike. Currently,
I'm running 52 mm Big Bens and have little give for fender clearance. Part
of the point of getting this bike was the ability to have big fat tires I
could run at a low psi. I would be willing to drop to a 48 mm but am
concerned about other aspects of sand, i.e.clogging the fenders. How much
clearance space is recommended?

Maintenance. That is exactly why I'd like to upgrade my wife's Public.
Bikes like that are pretty cheaply outfitted. I always struggle with her
brakes and keeping the Nexxus hub dialed in. I'm scheming to slowly change
out Riv quality parts as the cheaper parts wear out or become problematic.
Eventually... the frame. Gotta play the long game!

For straight bars, I've only used mtb click shifters. Don't know what
thumbies would be like.

[RBW] Re: 200 miles on 10 bikes, an essentially pointless self-challenge

2017-08-28 Thread Bill Lindsay

Yesterday I said:

"Bike #4, my Niner Seven Fiver, could hit 200 tomorrow, if I can get a 100k
in on my first day of sabbatical. "

I managed to get a 100k in on a meandering journey through the East Bay
Hills, this time tending towards the North. The scenic highlight was a
quick out and back across the Carquinez Bridge bike path, which connects
Crockett to Vallejo.

That wraps up bike number 4 out of 10. My Niner Seven Fiver is now in the
books, although this bike won't likely stay on the hook, as I'm probably
going to use this bike for the Marin Mountains 200k in October. If I can
manage to acquire a secret weapon, then I'll absolutely use this bike for
that 1/4 dirt, 130 mile ride. 911 miles is the running total, with three
more days in August.

The roadini actually inspired me to pull my romulus frameset out of the closet

That said if i was buying a roadini, it'd be the grey fer sure. Love it w the

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for thumb shifters?

2017-08-28 Thread Jon BALER

IRD Silver SOS power ratchet Thumb shifters on Choco bars. I have left and
right switched, so I can mount them on the inner part of the grip.

1. I like that they have enough cable pull to use with Shimano Dynasys (10
speed mountain)
2. Yes, easy to use.
3. I'd say I shift one direction with thumb, and the other direction up
with pointer finger.
4. I have micro-shift on my surly ICT, which has a more traditional
mountain bike bar. But I use the rear der with index shifting.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for thumb shifters?

2017-08-28 Thread lum gim fong
It is a Raleigh comfort bike with twist shifters.
Always had problems with the front chainring shifts not working well and
chain drop. Hesitations, etc. Ever since it was new.

I figure that friction shifting will get her an easy shift every time.

I think that IRD set Riv sells looks good, and it is a set. I might try
them on the straight bar and see what she thinks.

Would be nice if she had a Rivbike, then the maintenance would be easier
for me. And I'd feel better buying new components for the build rather than
putting things on her Raleigh that maybe can't be used later on a possible
Rivbike.

Maybe I should just get her a rivbike anyway one day without asking. A
Cheviut would give her a comfort type bike so it would not be so different,
and the maintenance would be easier for me and hopefully she would like the
shifters better.

[RBW] Re: Help from coastal riders: how to deal with sand?

2017-08-28 Thread LBleriot
Fenders should take care of most of the grit, but the drivetrain is cheap
to replace compared to the frame. Riding and storing your steel frame near
the sea will result in corrosion. And quick. Make sure that you treat the
inside of your frame. Also, rinse and wax the frame and lube all of the
bolts. I usually soap and hose off the cassette after it cruds up.
Regularly pulling and lubing the BB shell is also a good idea.

[RBW] FS/T: Brooks Flyer Special, used, $75

2017-08-28 Thread Jeremy Till
For sale or trade is one Brooks Flyer Special saddle. The Flyer is a
sprung B.17, and "Special" refers to having the big hand-hammered copper
rivets and some extra chamfering on the bottom edges of the leather.
Bought new by me in 2013, used regularly through 2016, used only
occasionally since then. This is the "Honey" color, although it has
darkened slightly because I have treated it regularly (~once a year) with a
small amount of Proofide. I always was conscientious about using a saddle
cover in wet weather. There are some scuffs in the leather between the
rivets, and there is one spot on the left side of the nose where the
leather bows out slightly. It has been that way since new, and I never
found it to be an issue while pedaling. Pictures are here:

https://flic.kr/s/aHsm3vkzZq

I'm selling it because after giving them a good try (3 years of riding), my
riding style has changed slightly and I've come to prefer saddles that are
slightly narrower and with a more modern geometry. For that reason, I
would:

1. Trade straight across for a Brooks Cambium C.15 or C.17, regular or
carved, any color, in similar or better condition, or a leather saddle with
a more modern profile (Rivet, Berthoud, etc., but not Selle Anatomica).
2. Do a partial or full trade for a WTB Pure V saddle, depending on the
model (Team, Race, Pro, etc.) and condition.
3. Sell this saddle for $75.

I am located in Sacramento, CA and could do local pickup either in
Sacramento or the SF Bay Area. Would ship as well, especially for trades.
I will also include the adjustment wrench and the rest of my large tin of
Proofide.

Thanks for looking,

Jeremy

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for thumb shifters?

2017-08-28 Thread Surlyprof
1. I've tried the Sunrace and Paul thumbies and am currently running
Silver shifters on Paul thumbies. I like them both but prefer the
Silver/Paul combo. They are very long compared to the Sunrace shifters but
they work very well. Nice and smooth with a great look with the CNC'ed
aluminum.

2. Once I got used to thumbies, instead of bar ends, I liked them. Very
easy to use once you get them in the position you like. That took a little
experimentation. I'll go back to Albastache with bar ends when the
shoulder heals. I really miss that set up.

3. I use only a thumb when shifting them down but use my index finger and
thumb when shifting up and trimming.

4. Haven't tried them on a straight bar. I use them now because I shifted
from Albastache to Albatross due to a shoulder injury. I found bar ends
were too long on the Albatross bars and I'd occassionally shift with my
knees when turning. I used the Sunrace thumbies with Boscos and they
worked well. The "not indexing click" was a little weird at first but then
you just forget about it.

5. I moved mine right over from the bar end pods without a hitch. Don't
forget that you will need to get the adapter for the Silver shifters
(https://www.rivbike.com/products/paul-thumbie-silver-shifer-adapter-hardware-pair-17145).

I forgot about that and it stalled my build for days. Torture!

I feel your marital pain. I've been trying to convince my wife how much
she'd love the Riv mountain mixte but she will not give up her bright
orange Public with twist shifters. I also think she saw right through my
thinly veiled attempt to add a Mountain Mixte to the household for my
personal use. I'm sure she could hear my future argument for a 650b
Hunq... "But the mountain mixte is *your* bike dear!"

The listing says this has stainless steel tubes with aluminum lugs and was
marketed for use near the ocean where rusting is a problem. Has anyone seen
one of these? I wonder if this was a Grant design.

Nice looking bike!

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam chainline w/ PW freewheel?

2017-08-28 Thread Wally Estrella
An update, of sorts, I think and hope ;)

I finally and recently received a PW built rear wheel w/ a double freewheel
on it. The chainline seems just fine. I didn't check dimensions on it,
but looks fine. I must've been more worried about the numbers than
operation of it, thus posted the original question in ignorance and hint of
stupidity.

the chainline on the QB is 42, from what I've read, the chain line on a

overthinking the simplicity of it. Sounds like it'll work just fine, so
 I'll just do it.

[RBW] Re: Help from coastal riders: how to deal with sand?

2017-08-28 Thread Matt B.
Not sure if you're using fenders already but they help a lot. A good
mudflap on the front that is 4-5" wide and hangs within 2" of the ground
helps immensely. You can't really find mudflaps wide/long enough on
off-the-shelf fenders so they usually have to be homemade with a rubber
sheet or something similar like leather or plastic. Attachment can be as
easy as a couple of holes and a zip-tie.
