[RBW] Are you an "Oscar," or a "Felix" bike rider?

2017-09-30 Thread Philip Williamson
On the recent "Saluki" thread, Mark made a funny reference to the Odd Couple,
regarding immaculate bicycles and their opposites.

I'm a definite Oscar. I start out a bike build in full Felix mode, but then
don't clean it much or mess with it until something wears out or I get another
wild hair and build it up differently.

Where do you fall on the Oscar/Felix spectrum regarding bicycle cleanliness and
upkeep? Are you happy with your level of slovenliness or fussiness, or would
you like to change?

Thanks everyone. I'm researching all of these as I make my way through the
posts. I suppose that I may have over stressed "off-road". While It certainly
needs to be capable on poorly maintained dirt roads. I also, almost more
importantly, need it to be able to get to 70mph or so on the highway. It's
probably a 60% paved highways, 30% dirt roads for cars, 10% washed out roads
that are no longer in service. Nothing technical though.

[RBW] Re: OT: know anything about motorcycles?

2017-09-30 Thread Christopher Cote
Oh boy, I spent the last 5-7 years away from bicycles on a dual sport
motorcycle spree. Be careful, it's a slippery slope...

First of all, stay away from anything more than 15-20 or so years old.
Motorcycles don't age well, and the old twin shock, drum brake bikes just
sucked.

The bike that fits your requirements most closely is a Kawasaki KLX250S.
Street legal, decent on road and off. The only downside is that it's slow,
and a little on the heavy side for real off-road work. Very good on dirt
roads, and very beginner friendly.

If you can get a street registration for a real dirt bike in your state
(many can), then a street-legalized Honda XR250R from 1996-2004 would be
awesome.

I currently ride a Suzuki DR650. It's heavier and more skewed towards road
riding, but it's good on dirt roads and easy trails. Highway capable, too.
Simpler to work on than a lawnmower and they haven't made any changes to
them since 1996, so used parts availability and aftermarket support is
awesome.

If you want to buy once and cry once, get a new-ish KTM 500EXC. If I had
the means, there'd be one in my garage right now.

Other notable machines:

Kawasaki KLR650 - owned one, put 12k miles on it. Terrible on road and off.
But they have a cult following for some reason?
Yamaha WR250R - owned two. Looks like a real dirt bike, but way too heavy
and underpowered, IMHO. Very complicated with fuel injection and what not.
Suzuki DRZ400 - top heavy and has a very narrow gear spread, so it's really
buzzy on the road.
BMW F650 singles - owned the first gen "Funduro". Good bikes, but more
road-oriented. Expensive to buy, and maintain compared to the Japanese
brands.
Honda XR650L - taller and more top-heavy than the Suzuki DR650. More
offroad oriented.

Finally, if you really want to fall down the rabbit hole, check out
ADVRider.com. See ya over there...

[RBW] Re: Need Advice On Lighting System

2017-09-30 Thread 'Jack' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have a Schmidt hub on my Hunqapillar and an SP on my Atlantis. Both power
an Edelux II and a tail light perfectly. The Schmidt is probably a
better-quality build, but for me there isn't enough difference to justify
the extra cost. I also prefer the SP connector over the two pronged
connection on the Schmidt.

I have a B IQ-X on my Miyata with a Shimano hub. That also works great -
I think I prefer the B's light output a little better than the Edelux but
it's hard to tell which is really better.

I think you'll be happy with either of the hubs and lights you mentioned.
If cost is a factor (and it is for most of us) go with the SP hub and the
IQ-X light.

One cyclist said that he carries snap-n-pops when he rides.
One dog used to chase him down the street.
One snp later and the dog never chased him again. So he recommends carrying
them with you when you ride.

I don't know if they call them snap and pops out in Albuquerque but they are
like tiny paper dumplings filled with gunpowder(?) and pebbles. When you throw
one on the ground it makes a very loud popping noise that can scare animals
away. Or maybe you could carry a cap gun with you when you ride and walk your
dog. That might have the same affect the loud noise a cap gun makes?

They could be effective in warding them off on dog walks.

Do they have periodic coyote hunt's in your area? They have pro hunters where I
live to thin the deer herds. Professional Huntsman are hired to come out and
thin the herds every year.

Is your HOA obligated to keep you all safe in animal infestations like this?.

Paong,
I agree, for frames of 54cm and smaller, 650B allows better angles without

Years back I had a cross enduro bike doing exactly what you described. It was a
Honda XL250. I would not get a bike with a bigger engine than that so its easy
and not too heavy to carry and if you spent enough time in the woods there will
be times when you may have to carry it.

I recently sold my last motorcycle, after years of touring throughout North
America. For a time I had a Honda 650 dual sport, but that was a mistake. Some
of the riding I was doing was too technical for a bike that tall and heavy. A
friend with a long history of riding performance bikes bought a TW200 a couple
of years ago and absolutely loves it. If I were to get a bike again, I would
look very seriously at that one.

I dont think there is a right or a wrong answer to this question. Each builder
has its own version of the response to the 700c vs. 650b question. Boulder
bicycles was mentioned; Mike Kone's website includes his version of the
response. Grant has his own version as do Jan Heine and Jeff Lyons to name a
few.
My personal view is that there is no magic wand in either and 650b makes more
sense in certain frame sizes than others assuming your road biking is on
relatively smooth paved roads.

This guy makes a pretty compelling case for the TW200.

I completed my safety course on the TW and it is a blast to ride on.

[RBW] Re: Why no 650b Roadeo?

2017-09-30 Thread Belopsky
The Boulder can fit 32mm, maybe 33, no room for fenders nor does it have
fender mounts.
The Roadeo is built around the 33.3 Jack Brown, had fender mounts. 28mm
with fenders will work well.

[RBW] Re: Need Advice On Lighting System

2017-09-30 Thread John G.
My only experience is with the Schmidt SON hub, but I absolutely love it. I
feel almost no drag when I use it, and it still produces a nice bright
light when I'm crawling uphill at 8 mph. I'm not sure about the Shutter's
performance at those speeds.

2017-09-30 Thread Mattt

Adding to the sale is is a set of Ortlieb Back Roller Plus panniers.
Thought about starting a new thread, but will see how this turns out. I
think they are from 2010. They have some discoloration, but in fine
condition.

How about $105 shipped.

[RBW] Re: Why no 650b Roadeo?

2017-09-30 Thread Paul G
The larger sized Roadeos (59 and above I think) have similar gauge tubing to
the AHH. The sizes smaller than that use lighter-than-AHH tubing.

I have a 61 cm Roadeo and like it a lot, but realize that I could have had a
more versatile bike in an AHH without having sacrificed much.
