Re: [RBW] Is tube patching a permanent, reliable fix?

2017-10-10 Thread Bill M.

I use the plastic patch kit box as the 'anvil', and the rounded end of a
tire lever to apply the pressure to make sure the patch seals well to the
tube.

Also, I leave the clear plastic on the patch if I'm reinstalling
immediately. That makes sure I don't pull the patch free. If using the
patched tube as a spare, I'll remove the plastic after the patch has had a
suitably long time to cure. Bending the patched area a bit will often open
up a split in the plastic, so it can be peeled off center-to-edge.

Re: [RBW] Re: Let it Begin! (Winter, that is)

2017-10-10 Thread Patrick Moore
Another interesting post with very good photos.

Winter must indeed start up high, because Quebec City, at about the
latitude of N Dakota and Minnesota, but in the Buffalo, NY snow belt, and
where I did my graduate studies, doesn't, or didn't, get its first real
snow until November, and often not until mid or late November. You'd get
freezing temps at night before mid-Sept, and winter by the end of the
month, but only flurries until past mid November.

Note though that, for Quebec, "first real snow" often means 2 feet, and
"flurries" are what others call "storms." 13 feet in an average year, with
the fall alone, no drifts, and including sublimation, accumulating by mid
December so that just the final foot of 8' high goal posts show on the
Plains of Abraham. 12' tunnels along some of the big roads on the outskirts
where they just toss the snow aside instead of trucking it away. Snow lasts
through April, tho' mid April is snow + thaw = mush; and May is spring, so
that June is hot and green and muggy and glorious.

I did read of at least one youngster, grad student? who rode in winter;
this pre mountain bike and certainly pre fat bike. Of course, they do a
*real* job of snow removal in the more built up parts of the city.

Is 18*F a typical winter temp at 10K feet, in your area? Typical Q city
highs in Dec were between +5 and 15 *F, and late Jan and Feb were the cold
months.

Here in ABQ, I dearly love to ride in one or three good falls a year,
unusual to get more than 1, but I'm glad it all melts within a few days.

Thanks, Andy. Actually, I may get PB's new (ish) aluminum 65s; we'll see.

But these and the Zeps are tied for first place on the short list.

Re: [RBW] Re: Jobst Alp rides calendar

2017-10-10 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, I've seen that profile photo; the relationship of frame to wheels
is larger than that of my 58 and 57 Rivs to their 24.75" actual 559 X Elk
Pass tires wheels.

What frame size c-c did he ride?

And does anyone know his typical gearing? IIRC, he used something like
50/47 in front with 6 in back but perhaps he modernized to 7 for this bike?

I agree that we mere mortals need smaller gears and bigger tires!

But at least Jobst and I are similar in that we both use the same, or very
similar, stems.

[RBW] Michigan iBOB+Riv Meet-up This Saturday -- Last Call!

2017-10-10 Thread Jack K
Hi RBW-folk,

This will be my last post to the list about this event, so please take note
listers from Michigan, Ohio and Windsor ...

The Michigan iBOB + Riv meet 'n greet is coming up this Saturday, Oct. 14.
We'll have a short ride in the Ann Arbor area, followed by socializing at
HOMES brewery. Please join us if you can!

We'll meet at HOMES Brewery (*not* Sic Transit Cycles as first planned) at
noon on Saturday, Oct. 14 for a casual (30-ish mile) ride, followed by food
& drink. In case of rain the event will move inside HOMES for food, drink
and comradery of fellow bike geeks. Feel free to join us for just the ride,
just the socializing, or both, as your schedule allows.

About the ride ... There's a lot of interest in a mixed gravel/paved route,
but some of us prefer to stay on pavement. The plan is to offer both
(30-ish mile) options and split into two groups, though route specifics are
still being worked out. I'll be riding pavement, but I'm told the mixed
pavement/gravel option is easily doable on a road bike with 30mm tires.

*If you may be able to join us please contact me with your email address,
so I can add you to the list for email updates.*

To recap:

*What:* Southeast MI iBOB + Riv Meet'n Greet
*When:* Saturday, Oct. 14 at noon
*Where:* HOMES Brewery, 2321 Jackson Ave., Ann Arbor
*What You Need To Do:* Contact me (Jack) with your email address

Cheers!

-Jack K.

[RBW] Re: Front Rack for Hunqapillar

2017-10-10 Thread John
Ask yourself how much you plan to put in your panniers? Riv says the load
for the Big Front Rack is 30 lbs, and the Hub Area Rack is 7 lbs per
pannier. Another question is how rough are the roads you plan to travel?

And you are limited to tires no larger than 52mm with the Big Front Rack,
something I found out when I tried to fit the rack over 55mm Big Bens.

Re: [RBW] Re: Front Rack for Hunqapillar

2017-10-10 Thread Tim Gavin
Kevin-

Do you want a top platform in addition to pannier capability? If so, the
Nitto Big Front (34F) and Campee Classic (F20 et al) are excellent
choices. The Surly front rack is another good option, but less expensive.

If you do not need a top platform, then the Nitto Hub Area racks are nice.
The Tubus Tara has similar capability but is less expensive.
You could always add a mini front rack (Nitto M12, for example) in addition
to the Nitto HAR or Tubus Tara. Separate top and pannier racks seem less
integrated, but that allows you to use one or the other, or both, as
required for your load.

Nitto racks are well-constructed and have excellent finish. They use
narrower tubing that has a more classic appearance. Tubus racks use more
oversize tubing and they have a more modern appearance.

[RBW] Re: Let it Begin! (Winter, that is)

2017-10-10 Thread Deacon Patrick
Yes, Andy, the jacket is Hilltrek cotton analogy. No laminate or coating,
but an inner liner that mimics the capilary action of animal fur, taking
moisture (vapor AND liquid) to the outer layer of ventile where it
evaporates. Works stunningly well. Best jacket I've ever
had. http://hilltrek.co.uk/clothing/smocks/foinaven-smock/

Combined with the fishnet long johns once temps get to the "wet and cold"
danger zone and below into the frigid zone, moisture management (and thus
heat management) has never been simpler. Wonderful system.

With abandon,

[RBW] Front Rack for Hunqapillar

The issue between Hunqapillars and Hub Area Racks was that the mid fork braze
on was too far away from the fork tip to allow the Hub Area Rack to fit.

There’s no issue with your 790c Hunqapillar and a Big Front Rack. The Big
Front is a good choice.

[RBW] Re: Jobst Alp rides calendar

2017-10-10 Thread Jeremy Till
Here's a grainy set of pictures of what I believe was Jobst's last bike:

http://bikecult.com/works/archive/04bicycles/pjohnsonJB04.html

I go back to it sometimes as a great example of one mechanical engineers
distillation of bicycle technology, as a guy who only "upgraded" when he
believed that a new product offered real benefit for him as a rider. To
the untrained eye, it looks like just another Eroica-compliant vintage
racing machine, but note:

-Threadless headset (a Campy Record headset he actually de-threaded
himself)(sorry Grant)
-Suntour slant-parallelogram rear derailleur, but still friction DT
shifters, I believe
-Shimano DA 74xx series square taper cranks
-I'm not 100% sure but I'm fairly certain he has a Shimano cassette hub
back there too.

It's also true that Jobst was a monster of a rider and had little need for
low gears or higher leverage brakes (note the 70's era Campy SR brakes,
albeit with Kool Stop pads), or tires wider than 28mm on any terrain. Us
mere mortals might benefit from some of those things.

Oh and in terms of spoke count I also believe he always rode 36 spoke
wheels, such that if he broke a spoke on a ride the rim deflection would be
minimal, allowing him to open up his brake QR and ride home.

[RBW] Front Rack for Hunqapillar

2017-10-10 Thread Kevin Lindsey
Greetings.
I need a front rack suitable for loaded touring (i.e. for panniers) that'll
fit on my 54cm 700c Hunq. I was assuming that the Nitto Big Front Rack
would be the way to go, but then I read a comment on the page for Nitto's
Mark's Hub Area rack that "Yes, this rack will work for newer 700c
Hunqapillars." Is there an issue with Hunqs and Nitto front racks? What
are others using?
Many thanks,

Thought I'd try a swap here before ordering from Riv.

I'd like a Nitto Tallux stem, 13cm reach, 25.4mm clamp. This size seems to
be a Riv exclusive.
I'm leaning more towards a trade, but can buy outright as well.

I have to trade:
Nitto Tallux Stem - 10cm reach, 25.4mm clamp, used nice condition
Nitto Technomic Standard - 225mm version, 10cm reach, 26.0mm clamp, new
Tektro MTB Brake Levers - cantilever/sidepull - black, new
Anything in inventory at treetop.bigcartel.com - canvas bags, leather goods
(wallets/notebook cases/&c.), Willow chainrings

Contact off-list if you're interested in a trade.
