[RBW] Re: Fenderless Sam: Snoqualmie or Barlow Pass?

2017-12-23 Thread DarinM
Just to reinforce, I emailed Compass about this a few weeks ago and was assured
by that the weights are correct as listed. The current Barlow’s are even
heavier than the size below, if I remember correctly. If I were set on that
size I would go with the new Panaracer Gravel King in 38mm for almost half the
price.

2017-12-23 Thread drew
Don't know about brakes, but 44 on a 18-19 rim shouldn't be an issue. I had
50mm marathons on dyads (I think they are 19mm internal) on a Sam and there was
nothing close to an issue that came up. This was with Paul racers. I'd bet the
559's clear 44mm just fine.

Even better, just strap it (poke holes in original straps as needed)
directly to the rails of your Flite, Turbo, or San Marco: I've done that
with Carradices and Rivendell bags up to Camper, Hoss, and Sackville Medium
sizes, and carried 35 lb loads in them. This works better with the buckles
inside the bag.

Or, get the VO bolt on loops, though I'd swap out the Phillips head screws
for small allen head screws, so that you can tighten them enough that they
don't slip. Use a wee bit of blue Locktite if you are uncertain; I never
needed to.

Re: [RBW] Re: Reader index?

2017-12-23 Thread Patrick Moore
Aha! Thanks for this. Those titles bring back *old* memories!

Money making suggestion to RBW, no % taken: make a book out of best old
Reader articles. Heck, if copyrights are a hassle, make a book just out of
Grant's pieces. But if you can include the Maynard Herson articles and the
Bontrager ones, all the better. Do keep all the interviews.

Make the book a *thick* book by selecting generously, of course. Say, 1,000
pages. 44 X average 25 pp -- leave out half; let's say 500 pages. Leather
bound calfskin, gilt edged, archival quality paper, full color.

I have to say that the RR was one of the most readable bike "mags"
available, when it was available.

[RBW] Re: Fenderless Sam: Snoqualmie or Barlow Pass?

2017-12-23 Thread tc
With the R559 brakes it looks like available height for the 44 Snoqualmie's
would be more of an issue than width.

My Marathon 35's measure 34.5mm wide X 36.5 high (60psi, front tire,
unloaded) on the Alexrims DM18 (18.4 inner rim width).

Has anyone mounted Snoqualmie's on a rim with an inner width in the 18-19mm
range on a Sam? I know the Sam is supposed to handle 44mm tires, but it
dawned on me that they don't spec what rim/brake is required to support
that.

[RBW] Re: Banana Sax Pics?

2017-12-23 Thread Bill M.
I have the 'original' version of the Banana bag, which hung from the saddle
rails. It looks like the new one is for saddles with loops only? That
would be a deal breaker for me, which is too bad because the blue might go
nicely with my next bike (custom, lugged but non-Riv). The toggles,
reflective strip, inside pocket and blinkie loop are all nice improvements,
though.

The mounting in the photos looks messy, I always run the buckles inside the
bag, with just small loops of leather outside snugged up to the saddle.

2017-12-23 Thread Joe Bunik
happy holidaze, Gang,

Am I crazy to recall that there was an index sheet / master table of
contents for the Rivendell Reader at some point? Anyone have a copy
available?

I need to find my USB cork!!!

Hoping all your saddle sacks are hung by the chimney with care

[RBW] Re: Banana Sax Pics?

2017-12-23 Thread drew
I've had all three. Size would go XS, banana, S. sackville small isn't exactly
small, and the shape of it really utilizes space. I used to regularly get 2
takeout boxes in mine without hassle or jostling of the food. The banana is
smaller for sure, but the way space is used almost makes it not comparable to
the sackville small. It's a really useful bag but more for riding essentials
like Lock/jacket/tools and doesn't feel as saddlebaggy. XS is too small for my
liking. Couldn't fit much more than a tube and a few tools.
