Re: [RBW] Re: 29 x 2.3-2.5 Knobby Tire & Rim Recommendations for Clem.

2018-02-26 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Deacon Patrick - Can you expand on your preference against wider rims? At
what width (or weight) are you seeing diminishing returns? What rims are
you running your Thunder Burts and Stielicooms? I've weighed going wider
on my Saluki rims, currently sitting with A23's but I've got a pair of
cliffhanger rims hanging in the garage.

Regarding the OP question, I'm running cliffhangers with Schwable Big Ones
tubeless on my wife's Clementine (52cm) and they max out the chainstay
clearance... I'll post a picture and measurements later. They are quite
comfy though.

Tony

Re: [RBW] Re: 29 x 2.3-2.5 Knobby Tire & Rim Recommendations for Clem.

2018-02-26 Thread Deacon Patrick
I’m fine with wider rims, Tony. My hunqapillar will have Cliffhanger rear and
Atlas front, QB has NoBS rims. For the riding I do, I consider a hearty rim
essential, and wider rims maximize tire suppleness. I shifted my QB from 719s
to the NoBS without noticable change (but the big change then was to fixed, so
changes may have been swallowed in that).

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Unsafe helmets

2018-02-26 Thread Surlyprof
Trying not to get political but I was disappointed to see Blackburn on this
list as well. The founders of Blackburn and Giro (Jim Blackburn and Jim
Gentes) both graduated from our design program and started companies to
help cyclists stay safe, be more comfortable and enjoy cycling more than
they could before they started those companies. Both men are truly genuine
and fantastic people who often come back and tell their business stories to
our students. Both are retired and their companies have been sold to these
larger corporations. I fear that this is the kind of thing that can happen
to the principles of any company as they are bought and taken over by
larger companies. I'm glad to see Grant work so hard to maintain
Rivendell's soul and principles when it is suffering its various financial
challenges through the years. He's probably been approached with offers
before and turned them down. Blackburn racks transitioned me into bike
commuting 25 years ago and I've owned mostly Giro helmets because they are
well designed and fit me best. However, as a teacher whose fear is
heightened with every school shooting, I have to say that I vote with my
dollars. I will probably be looking for a different brand of helmet in the
future and buying a Hail Mary from Riv even though I really can't afford it
and don't really need anything now.

Thank you for posting the articles Michael and Jonathan. It was good
information to know.

Beautiful reimagining of your Hillborne, Tim. Mine is set up similarly but
I still love that blue and cream color scheme the best. The bicycle looks
so classy with the blue and tan accents and I've always loved the double
tt. Barlow Pass tires on a Sam are fantastic. It feels like your gliding
more than riding.

Enjoy those spring and summer rides.

[RBW] Re: WTB or recommendations for SS/1x crankset, 650b tires

2018-02-26 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
VO has a 1x version of their Grand Cru crank (165 or 170 lengths) with
110bcd and comes with a 44t ring and a more digestible cost than some of
the others I had looked at (including WI and Paul which were on my wishlist
but well above budget.)

I ended up just using already available 110bcd doubles as singles for cost
reasons. I also scored a 130bcd Dura Ace double 172.5 with 39/49 rings as
part of a larger trade that is now in use as a 39t single with chainring
bolt spacers taking up the space of the outer 49t. Not as clean looking as
a dedicated 1x crank but cost nothing extra and was a perfect fit on my
existing 113 bb.

[RBW] Un-Un-Racing update: A Race!

2018-02-26 Thread Bill Lindsay
The Racing season for Norcal High School League has begun. Our first race
was last weekend. Some of you will remember I'm the Team Mechanic and an
Assistant Coach for El Cerrito High School. Last year we placed 2nd in
league (Norcal, Southern Conference, D1), behind perennial powerhouse
Salinas, but ahead of local rivals Albany and Berkeley. This race was down
in Fort Ord (near Monterey). We drove down Friday, pre-rode the course,
and had a team pot-luck in the hotel parking lot. Saturday was race day.

I had several highlights:

Both my kids came with me (17 and 14) and both said they'd do it again. My
17 year old put a lap down on the race course.
I finally got to use my epic toolboard that I was showing off last Fall.
It's better equipped than my own workbench.
Our own MH was 2nd in every race last year, 2nd to MG every race. She
leapfrogged over Sophomore into JV Girls, and WON. MG was 2nd and she was
not happy
Brand new rider, Sophomore girl MW started from basically zero in
pre-season. We must have worked her hard because she won off the front in
her Soph Girls race.
Our most promising Freshman boy EN, crashed during pre-ride, banged up his
shoulder, and couldn't pull on the handlebars at all. He dug deep and got
3rd in Freshman Boys anyhow
Our stars, twin brothers MG and EG, raced Varsity for the first time
against some unbelievable competition, and placed 4th and 7th

We frantically were estimating the scoring for the team totals (top 8
finishers) and it was clear we were top-4, but we weren't sure our place.
At the podium, they gave trophies to the top-3. Third PlaceAlbany.
Second PlaceSalinas! Our hearts were in our throats. First
Place.Berkeley. Dangit!

Next morning, I log into the Norcal website to see how close it
was...CORRECTION! They had a math error! The official results went 1.
Salinas, 2. El Cerrito, 3. Berkeley. Order was restored. I'm not sure
when or how we'll retrieve our trophy, but who cares. It was particularly
gratifying to place that well, because even though this was our largest
field of racers ever, with 20 riders, Salinas had 41, and Berkeley had 64
racers. We have a feasible plan to reel in Salinas, potentially in the
next race on March 10th.

There is no real Riv-content here, but some RBW Group Members did donate
generously to help purchase our trailer last year, so I hope you enjoy
updates from time to time. Other potential Riv content is that the March
10th racecourse overlooks Laguna Seca Raceway, and I'll be camping there
the night before, with coffee outside and lots of various Riv campgear.

[RBW] Analog Cycles w(Right) stem write up

2018-02-26 Thread James / Analog Cycles

Hey Gang, James from Analog Cycles, formerly the Co-Owner at Gravel & Grind
here. We have some interesting projects in the works that are highly Riv
oriented. Hope you'll take the time to check them out. Also: for right
now, we're the DC area Rivendell dealer. Wanna get a Riv? We'll set you
up. We have a few Chev frames and Roadini frames in stock, and we can get
ya whatever Rivendell has, and save you the shipping + help with build outs
and fitting. In late spring, we're moving Analog to Vermont, but we're in
Frederick for a few more months!

We have a new entry up on the Analog journal: w(Right) Stem Write Up
which details our recent stem project.

It's about super short reach stems, the benefits, the history and the
future. We've been riding the prototypes for a while, but they're about to
go into low scale production. Check it out when ya get a sec.

[RBW] Ode to Grampa / My Atlantis

2018-02-26 Thread ant ritchey
A bit of snow laid on down last night. Today's sun rose to reveal a good
bit still holding on. The day itself promised to be a fine one, perfect
even- sunny, crisp-cold...and no work!

My grandfather was a boilermaker & steelworker in Pittsburgh, PA, my
homelands. Today is his birthday; the 15th we celebrate without him with us
here on Earth. He's often a part of my thoughts while riding, but today is
special for obvious reasons. I mention this and him for this reason: So
much of what I think the general RBW school of thought embodies has a lot
to do, philosophically and/or historically, with strength and simplicity,
of both animate and not, and most certainly certain folk from his time;
tough as nails while still being as sweet as pie. I'm grateful for it,
grateful for it all. The bicycle has brought more good to my life than any
other non-living thing. RBW/Grant and everyone from this camp I've met
along the way are a benchmark of highest order & this bicycle, my '04 Toyo
Atlantis, is the functional symbol of it all & a reminder of these
coinciding legacies every single day of my life. He'd be proud of me and
all of us atop our cherished works of the steel stuffs.

A guy walking his dog down the snowy path (presumably eyeing the big Wald)
jokes to me as I pass: "Man! You take your paper route seriously!"

Enough with my run-on sentences. Without further ado, a few pics of a bike:

[RBW] Re: Analog Cycles w(Right) stem write up

2018-02-26 Thread Ben Miller
James,

Cool (w)rite up man. I like the history and thought that went into them.
Might take a bit getting used to the stubby look, but it does have a
certain appeal to it. And, I love that it's a removable faceplate. To me
this is the single biggest drawback to quill stems and why??? (I know some
other quill stems are made with faceplates, but don't look that nice...)

I might have to take some measurements and see if they'd work with any of
my current bikes. Although I think the Crust Scapegoat that you guys built
for me would totally work, if I can ever get my hands on a set of
Bene's/Crust's Leather bars. Maybe the threadless version will be out by
the time they release the next version of the leather bars!

Also, sorry to hear that you guys are leaving MD, but stoked you're going
to my home state of VT! Best of luck with the move!

[RBW] S&S coupled Rivendell?

2018-02-26 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I am not claiming it to be a reasonable, recommended, or even worthwhile
choice, not even, but I have become curious...

Has anyone had their Riv frame retrofitted with S&S couplers before taking
delivery, the same kind of scenario as someone having a frame repainted
before delivery? I am curious if Rivendell has someone they work with on
such things and if anyone has had that done. Certainly shipping the frame
off to Bilenky or someone would be an option but adds even more cost to
something already expensive.

Anyway, just curious if anyone had gone that route directly through
Rivendell. I might call them just to see but I know too they are busy, way
too busy for hypothetical, somewhat crazy, probably not going to happen,
questions.

All help appreciated,

[RBW] Custom frames sold out

2018-02-26 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
all Waterford made models showed the same last I was on the frames page.. I’m
guessing this is to prevent anyone ordering made to order models directly
through the site. They seem to prefer personal contact with arranging those
anyway.

[RBW] Re: Custom frames sold out

2018-02-26 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
I would think a comment to call Riv directly might work better than a "sold
out" notation. Custom builders that I have seen often have a place to put
in a deposit online and then a follow up with the builder for specific
specs. Just struck me as odd but perhaps it is not.

Discussing bike fit on Riv style bikes with James is enlightening. We'll see

That's a great thought; love it. And the thoughts are just as relevant
today as when you first wrote the draft.

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet in San Diego

2018-02-26 Thread nick f
Hi everyone!! this is my bike for sale!! I bought the bike as a frame only.
I promptly called rivendell to get a replacement fork. Upon talking to
Mark, he informed me that no current riv model had a fork close to the ram
(this may have changed with the roadini but the roadeo was a poor fit)...
And I really didn't feel like spending on a custom color matched
replacement, so Mark kindly gave me all the specs of the original ram fork
and kindly sent me on my way.

Moral of the story. Its a nice lugged steel tange fork, that shares the
same specs as the oem rambouillet fork, that should be painted a color
other than black...I got it through Soma fab

P.s. Dropped it to $800! Im moving soon, and unfortunately this beauty
cannot make the journey with me!

this bike deserves a good home
