Ok All, some of you have been very kind and patient seeing my posts...I
appreciate that. I'm giving it one more try and then I'm putting this
beautiful bike on eBay or Craigslist or both.

I don't think $1800 is too much for this bike. And if you want to have it
shipped to you, BikeFlights is around $75 to most places...I would cover
the boxing of it by my LBS.

There is NOTHING wrong with this bike, it comes with all that is mentioned
previously and has fewer than 30 miles on it.

Please pm me if you have any questions.

Re: [RBW] Re: Contemplations on Crank Arm Length and Fixed Gear Riding

2018-03-16 Thread Patrick Moore
IME, headwinds and non-variable gearing require a considerable mental
adjustment but, when you have made that, headwinds are not so bad. And it
helps a great deal if you have a riding position for heavy winds that both
reduces your frontal area and, I believe just as important if not more so,
kicks up your power output, which happens when you bend more at the hips.
Together, a mellow, forgiving, humble, and patient attitude, paired with a
near-as-you-can butt-back, flat-back position, make a huge difference in
dealing with headwinds. And retention helps; I find myself pulling back
quite deliberately on the pedals to maintain cadence.

Still and all, mental fortitude and bending over work for winds in the 20
to 30 mph range; when they hit 40 (as ours did the other day, with even
higher gusts), lower gears do help a bit.

Re: [RBW] Contemplations on Crank Arm Length and Fixed Gear Riding

2018-03-16 Thread Patrick Moore
But what are the lengths of the 2 cranks? I guess at 175 and 172.5 ... did
I win?

I use 170s on my fixed road bikes, and only used a longer cranks fixed --
175 -- on the brief (6 mos?) trial of riding fixed off road. I did install
175s on the Matthews ("road bike for dirt), but that has multiple gears so
that I can upshift when I run out of rpm.

Actually, come to think of it, I did briefly use 172.5 Dura Ace 7410s on
the erstwhile Ram, but didn't notice a difference. I do notice a difference
between my 175 cranks and the 170s; 175 on the fixed gear mtb felt horrible
when trying to spin -- it had a 60" gear, and downhills were torture; which
is why I want back to 170s on that bike. And I do notice that I run out of
steam at lower r's pm on the 175 mm Matthews than on the Rivs in the same
gears.

But I wonder how much of this is due to Q and how much due to the 5mm of
additional crank length; both the mtb and the Matthews have ~ 160 mm Qs
while the 2 Rivs are at 130.

In any event, I'd rather grunt a bit more up hill in order to be able to
spin easier downhill, thus 170s for my Rivs. Jury still out on the
Matthews; may eventually swap the 175s for 170s.

DP,

That's a nice looking crank. Looks a lot like the FSA crank that I bought
from Riv about 5 years ago. 175mm length on my QB these days. We've having
a very windy past couple of weeks, glad to have the extra leverage when
cranking up a hill into a head wind. I've had to use the low gear on the
fixed two speed Bendix hub more as well. This morning was the exception,
the wind died down, no need for the low gear.

[RBW] Joe Appaloosa: My first Rivendell

2018-03-16 Thread Jonathan

Today marks 1000 miles on my Appaloosa that I bought last fall, so I
thought I'd make a post about it. It is my first Rivendell. I joined this
group right around the time I ordered it.

It's primarily my commuter. I ride to work year round in Milwaukee, in all
weather. (I put the Appaloosa away for the winter, though, and rode my old
beater with the studded tires.) The roads just got cleaned up enough to get
it back out last week. I love this bike. It made me a believer in upright
riding. It is such a beautiful, comfortable, useful bike. I love it more
than any bike I have ever owned. I love it so much that I ended up ordering
a new Canti-Sam frameset to be my long distance road bike, and then a
couple weeks ago, I also pre-ordered a Clem L for my wife.

I bought the bike complete, so it's standard Riv-build, plus racks, bags,
and fenders. I swapped the bars soon after I got it for the Chocomoose.
Most of my miles are on those bars. Right before the snow hit last fall, I
tried a set of Bullmoose bars and really liked them, but didn't get many
miles in with them. Then, I picked up a set of "bad angle" Boscomoose bars
over the winter, and have been riding those for the past week. I think I
like them better than the Chocos, but not sure if these or the Bullmoose
will win out in the end...

I'm excited to put a lot more miles on it this year.

Re: [RBW] Re: Smooth Factor of lighter rim brake steel forks

2018-03-16 Thread Patrick Moore
Grant has stated, long ago if not often, that fat/fattish tires and
handlbars absorb so much bump that forks are largely irrelevant in doing
so. I know Jan believes that thin-blade, heavily raked forks do a great
deal to absorb bumps. I'd be curious to know more about this in general,
and in particular, about any putatively bump-absorbing fork that is strong
enough to use with a disc brake. Not interested in shock forks, me.

A BMC Monster Cross with some Barlow Pass EL o light wheels would make

I'm going to regret this, but for sale is a Waterford built 2006 A. Homer

Hilsen that I have owned it since 2010. When I bought the bike, I thought

I'd own it for the rest of my life, but it turns out that it just doesn't

fit the type of riding I'm doing as well as I thought it would. It is one

of the more beautiful frames I've ever put my eyes on and when I purchased

it I painstakingly cleaned the frame and carefully touched up all the chips

with matching enamel paint (first sign that I'm not a true "Riv guy").

The paint is darker blue than the current Homer and anyone that is paying

attention knows that the AHH has gone through a lot of hues of blue over

the years. I was also missing the brifter index shifting from my sportier

road bike, so Homer's bar end shifters got swapped for a full Shimano

Ultegra 6500 triple groupset (second sign that I'm not a true Riv believer)

which I believe to be the last classically beautiful group that Shimano

produced. I don't need to go into how great these frames are and how well

they handle, or how beautiful they are, but I will say that the size 59

frame was on the verge of being too big for my 5'11" frame, but it was

still comfortable for a couple of 100 mile plus rides that I did on it. The

larger than normal sizing and the low seat post was one Grantism that I do

believe in for this bike which made it extremely comfortable for long rides.

Further details on the build are a full Nitto cockpit & seatpost including

46cm Noodle handlebars wrapped with brooks honey leather tape that could

use some moisturizing but still has plenty of life. A set of classic

I'm interested in this fork for my old Trek 950 and any future Riv that

I was just thinking about rim availability and the future of my 26"
Atlantis.
My mental mumbles:
"Should I start buying rims What about hubs without Disc mounts.Who
would have thought that they would go away? *My Atlantis might get retired
due to lack of outdated stuff? *Sure sounds like an oxymoron. "

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day! Black Mountain Monster Cross

2018-03-16 Thread Chris
Great Looking bike! I have a Rootbeer MonsterCross and love it! Can't wait
to get mine back to the West Coast this summer (Puget Sound area) and start
riding again, Chesapeake VA sucks for cycling... would love to have those
wheels, I have A23s with 105 hubs with Rock 'n Roll tires and they are ok
but the Belgiums would be the bomb!

[RBW] Where is Grant's guide to photographing your bike?

I remember Grant writing a guide to taking a picture of your bike, but I
can't find it.
Does anyone know where it is?

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day! Black Mountain Monster Cross

2018-03-16 Thread Bill Lindsay
One slightly negative aspect of these SRAM brake levers on this flared drop
handlebar:

The top of the SRAM S500 lever body is fairly flat and that offers a nice flat
continuation of the ramp into the hood on a normal drop bar. On these flared
drops, the lever is tilted inward and so that flat top is tilted as well. I
find there is a corner on the outside trailing edge of the lever body that kind
of pokes my hand. My full finger gloves are not padded at all. I’ll give it a
little more time with padded gloves as well. I think I could shape the plastic
of the levers to address the issue if it proves to be an annoyance. It’s just
something I notice now in this new cockpit.

Thanks for posting pictures of your BMC. I have one in orange and the new
green is so loud, obnoxious and awesome it makes we trade up. Great build,
I had 50's on mine but they were a tad big for the riding I was doing and
went back to the Rock N Roads.
