I've got a pair of black MUSA knickers in medium. These are in great shape
with no rips/holes. I just installed some new elastic and buckle in the
waist.

$40 shipped CONUS

[RBW] FS: Cranksets, pedals, shifters, derailleur, brakes

2018-04-09 Thread Michael Ullmer
Cross-post from i-BOB, lots of stuff for sale.

Most of these are take-offs from my spring break projects, others were just
kicking around the parts bin for way too long. My bike budget is in the red
at the moment, I need to dig myself out :-)

1) Shimano FC-6206 Deore XT 175mm 110/74 Triple Cranks, 46/30 Willow Rings,
Shimano Cartridge BB - $85 shipped CONUS
--This is a great set of cranks I had on my rando frame. The crank arms are
elegant, my favorite of the vintage Shimano. They're set up a double, but
can also be triple. The willow rings have a few hundred miles on them, the
teeth are in great shape. Comes with a 121mm Shimano Cartridge BB (a couple
hundred miles on this one).

2) Shimano FC-MT60 Deore 175mm 110/74 Triple Cranks, 49/37/25 Willow Rings,
Shimano Cartridge BB - $85 shipped CONUS
--This set came off of my all-road Fitz. Crank arms are in good shape, some
of the shine still left. The Willow rings have a few hundred miles on the,
teeth still in great shape. Comes with a 121mm Shimano Cartridge BB (a few
hundred miles on this one).

3) Shimano FC-M550 Deore LX 175mm 110/74 Triple Cranks - $25 shipped CONUS
--I had these on my Cetma cargo bike, but ended up switching to a tandem
Sugino crankset when I put a Stokemonkey Assist on it. The finish on these
is a little dull and the Deore LX logo is rubbing off. I might have some
rings I can throw in for cheap if you need.

4) 8-speed Shimano Bar End Shifters - $35 shipped CONUS
---I tried these only briefly, but just like suntour barcons better. All
the clicks are there, a few scuffs on these

5) Shimano PD-A520 SPD Pedals - $30 shipped CONUS
--I switched to flat pedals on the bike these were on. Plenty scuffed up,
but still spin smooth.

6) Shimano Tiagra RD-4601 Long Cage 10-speed - $30 shipped CONUS
--I had this on my rando, but I switched to SRAM 10-speed. This one's
pretty clean and shiny.

7) Controltech Bar Ends - $12 shipped CONUS
--These were an impulse buy at the LBS to see if I like bar ends on my
mountain bike. Turns out I don't.

8) Avid BB7 MTN Calipers, Tektro Long Pull Road Levers, Avid Long Pull flat
bar levers - $60 shipped CONUS
--I switched to TRP short-pull calipers on my all-road Fitz and now have
these as extra. The calipers don't have mounting posts or bolts. The Tektro
road levers are in great shape, they were new when I got them. The Avid
flat bar levers show some wear, but overall in fine shape.

Congrats, Bill, and thank you for the write-up. It provided some much

Debating whether I ride my Atlantis (sturdy and hefty but supremely
comfortable), my Lightning Bolt (probably perfect, but perhaps overkill),

[RBW] Re: How hearty/quiet Honjo Fenders?

2018-04-09 Thread 'Ann L' via RBW Owners Bunch

Patrick:

I had a set of Honjo fluted fenders. Although they were extremely light
weight and beautiful, I can personally attest they were neither quiet nor
hearty. The first time a pebble rattled through one of the fenders, it
sounded like the derailleur was eating itself. I ride my bikes hard in all
types of weather. After two years, the bolt holding the front fender to
the frame attachment rotted through the thin aluminum. From the type of
riding you do as gleaned from your posts, Honjos probably are not a good
choice for you.

[RBW] Re: 300k ride report: Samuel Hillborne still rules

2018-04-09 Thread Bill Lindsay
I think everybody is different on how they deal with long days on the bike.
Some people just get grumpy and unhappy after a few hours, and that's no
fun. Your bike has to be comfortable. I've had long days where my neck or
shoulders or my tush start to hurt, and that can make things no-fun, and it
just seems stupid to be going on such a long ride. You also don't
necessarily have to pile on monster mileage to prepare. The longest ride I
did on the roll up to this 300k was 60 miles. I do a bunch of climbing
though.

The thing I didn't mention in my write up was that several of the riders
and coaches associated with the high school mountain bike team I help coach
were all live-following me and their encouragement texts showed up on my
GPS screen. That was pretty fun on a day where I was riding solo for 13
hours straight.

I've casually toyed with the idea of doing a 200k brevet (I've never done

Re: [RBW] Re: New Atlantis Pre-sale page is up on rivbike.com

2018-04-09 Thread jandrews
Similarly I called Riv Bike too to discuss sizing. I would like to
purchase a MIT Atlantis as a dedicated tourer and keep my SH in dirt mode.
I was thinking I'd be somewhere between the new 56cm and the 59cm...but was
told that I'd be on a 53cm! My pbh is 84.5 and I find that very surprising.
I ride a 56cm SH and a 58cm Simpleoneboth purchased new from Riv.
I was sort of holding out hope that I would be recommended a 59cm since I'm
so invested in 700c...but no.
However, it does seem like I could be sized on a 55cm Appaloosa which runs
700c, so I could go that route and save $100 on the frame...if I really
want to keep using 700c.
FYI, I know I fit (Barely) the previous gen. 58cm Atlantis (which is 700c)

[RBW] 300k ride report: Samuel Hillborne still rules

2018-04-09 Thread Bill Lindsay
This past weekend I rode the Sky Londa 300k brevet with Santa Cruz
Randonneurs. I rode my 56cm, single top tube, cantilever-brake, orange
Samuel Hillborne. Executive summary: the ride went great. The bike did
perfectly. I'm hoping to do my 400k in two weeks.

Bike details: I ran 700x35 Compass Bon Jon Pass (standard) tires. HED
Belgium wheels. SP dynamo. 1x9 drivetrain 42x(11-32). Loyal designs
handlebar bag. VO fenders.

The ride started at 6:00AM Saturday morning at the Santa Cruz Lighthouse.
I set my alarm for 2:45, and started driving at 3:40. I parked near the
finish and rode to the start, just on time. It was raining quite hard,
which discouraged some starters apparently, as there were only 8 of us at
the start. Fortunately it was not cold all day. Santa Cruz Randonneurs is a
small but prestigious chapter of RUSA; prestigious because they are led by
RUSA #7 Bill Bryant and RUSA #8 Lois Springstein, both of whom having
served as RUSA president (I'm #6551). I had done a version of this course
in 15 hours on the dot a few years ago, and I had the goal to cut a
significant amount off that time. Despite the heavy rain I was determined
to settle into a brisk but sustainable pace. I figured out pretty quickly
that the other 7 riders were content to take a more slow-and-steady
approach, so I went out alone off the front. The rain and wind were both
pretty severe. Big, heavy raindrops just soaked everything, and the
headwind was as strong as locals know to expect from the coast. The course
followed the course North as the skies started to get lighter. The first
welcome sidetrack off of coastal Hwy 1 went along Gazos Creek Road. A tiny
narrow canyon with a very vigorously flowing creek. The rain began to let
up as I entered the canyon, and I was completely alone. No cars or people
at all. It was beautiful, and I stopped for a selfie:

Flickr Link to Gazos Creek Selfie

I started riding again but was distracted by how beautiful everything
wasso much so that I didn't notice the fallen tree in the road. I saw
it at the last moment but still crashed into it. It wasn't a bad crash but
a branch whacked my chin pretty good, and I was bleeding. I was mostly
thankful that nobody saw me, because it was an embarrassing move, like
hitting a parked car or something. I took inventory and meekly continued.
The first control was in the tiny town of Pescadero (mile 34). I grabbed a
coffee at the cafe, which has a couple character pieces that remind me of
Riv whenever I'm there: they sell and play vinyl records, and they have a
hat-rack stocked with vintage baseball gloves for sale. It's a cute spot.

Flickr Link to Pescadero Control

At a 'control' you have to prove you were there, on time, so you typically
get a printed receipt. This cafe didn't print receipts so we hand-wrote
one on a business card. While we were figuring that out two other Randos
rolled up, both on traditional road bikes. One was a titanium Seven, and
the other was a steel SOMA. We said hello, but I was soon on my way. It
was still raining but very lightly. The course returned to Hwy 1 and
continued North briefly before turning back inland for the first
siginificant climb into the redwoods. At the end of Purisma Creek Road
there was an "info control" (mile 51). The club posted a plastic sign high
on a post with "SCR" on the top line and a three digit code on the bottom
line. You have to find the sign and write the code on your brevet card to
prove you were there. I moved on and finished the climb and had a very fun
descent back to Hwy 1 and hit the nothernmost point of the route at the
"Easy Mart" in Half Moon Bay (mile 64). At this point I was feeling
great. This was the farthest North I'd be. This was the farthest from my
car I would be. The wind would blow me to the south for the rest of the
day. I knew this was going to be totally do-able.

Flickr Link to the Easy Mart

Southbound AT SPEED was really fun. Cruising along easily at ~21mph was
pretty great. The Bon Jon Pass tires at ~45psi were just singing. At mile
75 I turned back inland on La Honda Road for the biggest climb of the day,
up to Sky Londa. In the flatter lower section of the climb, a ladybug
landed on my GPS and rode along for the entire climb. Freeloader!
Stowaway!

Link to Instagram movie of ladybug (hopefully)

My 1x9 drivetrain did fantastic all day. I had everything I needed,
nothing I didn't, and the steps between never struck me as too large. If
you asked me to throw away one of the 9 gears, I would have ditched the
11. The grades only got over 10% for brief periods so my 36" low gear was
plenty low enough. I never wanted f

[RBW] Seen on My instagram: 700x55 Compass slicks

2018-04-09 Thread William R.
Very interesting indeed Bill! That Instagram post wasn’t dated April 1? I
wonder if these will fit on my Appaloosa. If my nominal 44mm Snoqualmie Pass
tires measure actual width of 41mm, will the new 55s measure 50-51mm on the
same rims (Atlas). I will be eager to find out. As it is, 53s (Maxxis Torch)
and 54s (Thunderburts) easily fit on the Joe, but Big One’s at 60mm certainly
did not. 55mm Compass may be the bees knees.

Right now the levers are hard to reach from the drops. I am going to lower
the levers some. The hood levers seem a little narrow compared to the
Tektro TRDs that I am used to, but I spend mist of my time on the upper
bends. I do like the absence of housing under the tape.

I don't spend a lot of time on the drops, mostly going downhill. I just
don't feel comfortable descending while upright.

[RBW] WTB: Hub Area racks

2018-04-09 Thread Reid Echols
Hi folks, after finally getting my Sam built into it's current "lightweight"
rando-type setup, I'd like to pick up a hub area rack to hang my sackville
mini-panniers (I forget what they're actually called; I think they were
originally handlebar bags?) on. Anyone have one they're not using?

I've got a few things for trade, too; Selle Anatomica saddle, various Nitto
stems and bars, Carradice bags, Bruce Gordon rock n roads (700c, black), etc.
Let me know if you're looking for anything in particular.

Thanks,

Well, it seems you do miss some things when you forgo social media. I'll be
interested when a description (and a photo! I wonder if it will seem as

Big Ones not so delightful (one rolldown test showed the BOs faster than
the road tires tested, and this with tubes). But I'd be interested to learn

Looks great, like when there is a cohesive theme to a bike. Nice mix of
old and new, good color match. Look like the Compass Snoqualmie Pass
tires? I bet the ride is superb.

What kind of noise was that?  Rattling from a loose installation, or the
sound of dirt and gravel hitting the inside of the fender?

They didn't have enough clearance for my Smart Sam knobbies but looked
sharp with Barlow Pass ELs.  I ended up giving them to Evan E. on the
list.  He used them to beautify one of his classic bikes.  I replaced
them with a pair of SKS plastics Riv sold.  Not as pretty but also not
as loud on all the gravel trails I need to ride.

Nice path racer. I myself would position the brake levers lower down, but
it would be a shame to wreck that pretty tape job.

Re: [RBW] Re: How hearty/quiet Honjo Fenders?

2018-04-09 Thread Patrick Moore
That's remarkable. Now, my Honjos were the "hammered" type; I wonder if
that made them more brittle, or if that's not the cause, at any rate, more
prone to cracking?

Good to know about compound curves; I hope eventually to replace the
Berthouds on one of my Rivs (which I slightly marred in a clumsy first
attempt at shaping to fit between narrow stays and fork), and given your
comment, I may try to snap up any FS Honjos I see on-list. The marring is
minor enough that I won't swap unless I see a good deal, though.)

And, I like your application of Tire Savers to the safety function. I have
a stash of those things and I'll consider adding them if and when I do swap
fenders.

I decided, after the first ride, that the saddle and pedals were too
narrow. So I went big and ordered some blue Catalyst pedals and installed
one of my Brooks B68 saddles from the stash. After a mile or so of trying
to position my feet "correctly" on the Catalyst pedals, I decided to quit
thinking about it and let my feet do their thing and find their own
position. Ended up a little forward of my normal position on platform
pedals, but nowhere near the recommended position. I have short (for six
foot tall), very wide (8-1/2 ) feet and extremely high arches, one of
the reasons that I do not use clipless - nobody makes a shoe that fits
well. The pedals and saddle made a huge difference, now the bike disappears
beneath me, except for the lever position on the handle bars, maybe a
little too high - I'll save that for when I need to change the handlebar
tape (not anxious to try the harlequin wrap again). I really like single

Come to think of it, I wouldn't be afraid of using the Raceblade XL with

Even though they're rated for 32mm, they provide great coverage and

Re: [RBW] Re: How hearty/quiet Honjo Fenders?

2018-04-09 Thread Ron Mc
Hi Tony, no, I have them just Not contacting the tires. When I hear the
tire rub noise, I adjust them, but that's very infrequent. So fiddling
time is minimal. I avoid riding off curbs, because that knocks the front
out of shape, and I have to stop and reshape it.
On another bike I use the SKS Raceblade XL, plus a PDW Origami front mud
guard on the seat tube to make them close enough full-coverage fenders.
Here I have the tire wipers in the more traditional position. They still
help with mud, but don't reject sticks and rocks. .

What they help most for is installing the fenders - I get the position
correct immediately, and can install these in 2 min.

BTW, these fenders you shape by sliding them in the stays. Once you get
the shape correct, they come with self-tapping screws to permanently fix
the fender in the stays.

[RBW] Re: Something Simple This Way Comes...

2018-04-09 Thread tc
Thanks all -- it really is a fun bike. Sometimes it's just nice not to
change gears and focus on what you can do with what you've got. Kind of
freeing. I'll stick with this gearing for a while and see what happens. I
will probably add a tooth or two to the chainring eventually, but whatever
- it's all good.

Other thoughts:

   - I continue to like the inverted Albatross bars. I will add another
layer of leather grip wrap, not because of vibration or soreness, but
because the diameter with 1 layer just feels too small to me.
   - Confirmed on my ride yesterday that moving up into the curves on the
inverted Albatross is really comfortable. I didn't do it that often; but,
when I did, just to change things up, or esp. to climb, it felt natural and
provided comfortable leverage when pumping up hills. And it looks cool :)
   - The 42mm Continental Contact tires ('basketball tires') are actually
quite nice. This is my first set. Felt reasonably fast, and at ~42lbs
pressure absorbed vibrations, bumps, and wooden bridge irregularities very
   well. Noiseless, too.
   - The Brooks B17 Imperial (has the central cutout) is such a great
saddle. I have one on my Sam and love it. Just the right amt of support,
enables moving around easily, and just enough give without needing
springs. I really like it over the regular B17 or the Flyer.

Re: [RBW] Re: How hearty/quiet Honjo Fenders?

2018-04-09 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Ron, on the tire wipers do you have them in contact at all with your
tires? I installed the compass wipers on my Saluki last fall and found
them to be fiddly, lots of adjustment to keep them from buzzing on the
tire. I've got them off the tire enough now to not require ride to ride
adjustment but I also now question the utility.

I will say that I don't notice picking up small rocks to rattle my fenders
come to think of it but I also haven't ridden any significant gravel.

[RBW] Re: Something Simple This Way Comes...

2018-04-09 Thread Dave Johnston
I tried Dove bars upside down for awhile on my fixed/free bike and didn't
like them at all in upside down mode. Somehow low and close is worse than
high and close.

I found Mustache are better for that look and purpose, but I eventually
settled on drops. I prefer drops when you only have one gear to work with
as I find honking the under geared bike on steep uphills easier using drops
and hoods positions (m bars are good for that too).

I'm going to take exception with Patrick, in that, you'll never crack any
fender unless you install it with external residual stress (and yes, he
admitted that).
I have one set of Honjos that has been on two bikes, for many, many
thousands of miles - wrecked on the 1st bike, reshaped the S-shaped front
fender to install them on the second bike.
Honjos take very well to shaping compound curves. Spread them every inch
or so to tighten the radius, squeeze, etc.to increase the radius.

I don't hesitate to ride the bike in slop, but on my Compass slicks, and
the reason I don't care about the slop is I use tire wipers where most put
their mud guards. They reject everything from the fenders and scrape
occasional mud from the tires, preventing the fenders from plugging. Zero
noise on gravel roads. That said, not intended for riding in mud, but
dealing with intermittent mud patches

Jan didn't like this, but for Many (thousand) miles, it works fine. Have
flipped the front scraper backwards, and it simply deflects out of the
way. It rejects rocks, sticks, chert and most of the mud from entering the
fender.

I don't think I'd use any fenders with knobbies. I think I'd go with
mountain bike type mudguards for knobbies.
