I agree they look good. For those wanting to see rise, to my eye they
looked completely planar, like a wide Jitensha bar, as others pointed out.
The place they put your hands remind me of where the original bullmoose
bars put your hands, but maybe even wider. They pull your hands back to
where they are about even with the stem bolt.

2018-04-18 Thread tc
Thanks for posting, Bob! Guessing that's a 90 or 100 stem. Most obvious
comparison is likely the largest Ahearne+Map bar at 610 wide and a 25mm
rise. It appears the wavie has some rise to it, too. Looks like the wavie
will have more room for shifting your hands around, compared to A+M.
Thinking about an alternate bar for the Atlantis, and this might be it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Long Rides to Nowhere: promotional video by SFR

2018-04-18 Thread Bill Lindsay
If you have a local RUSA chapter, you should check out the riders at the
start (or the finish) of these events. I think it would be a lot less
intimidating to see the kinds of specimens that can do these events. It's
all about preparation and being prepared. Whatever distance you can ride
comfortably, you can push yourself to ride twice that far. If you can ride
20 miles comfortably, you can ride 40 miles. Do that a few times until you
can ride 40 miles comfortably. Repeat that until you can bump up to 80
miles comfortably. Once you can do that, you are totally ready to ride
your first 200k brevet.

But these rides must be awful fun to do!

[RBW] Re: WTB 3 x 9 brifters

2018-04-18 Thread Peter Adler
That depends on whether Neil's looking for road/drop-bar brifters or
mountain/flatbar brifters. A Travel Agent converter will adapt short-pull
road levers to long-pull V-brakes. They're clunky looking, but they work;
you can probably find a pair for under $20.

Alternately, if Neil's interested in flatbar brifters, I've got a set or
two of Shimano XT 3x9 brifters (BR-M760) that I'm never going to use, and
would be more than willing to sell.

Thanks for sharing this, Bill. It's beautiful country, hard to believe
it's so close to millions of people. I have ridden some of these roads,
but in shorter stretches and slower speeds than the randonneurs. A few
roads are truly remote, with no cell service and sometimes not a single

[RBW] FS Chem H 52cm - $900

2018-04-18 Thread Alan H
Hi all,

I'd like to sell my Chem H, size 52 in mustard yellow. The bike is in
like-new condition with less than 200 miles on it. Turns out that with my
short legs (80-cm PBH) I don't have enough 'clearance' for my taste. I want
to replace it with a 45, but first this one has to go. I'm selling it
stock, complete for $900. My short legs are your gain. I have the original
pedals and seat and will include them if you want them. The original grips
are gone.

Local pickup in SoCal is preferred, but I can arrange to have it shipped by
a LBS if you're willing to pony up the extra dough. Thanks for you
consideration!

[RBW] Re: Prague to Paris route help

I'd be cautious about relying on Google Maps in Europe. Their data quality
is much worse than it is in the US. OpenStreetMap, on the other hand, is
generally much better. So you could use something like OpenRouteService to
plot a route (note that there is a limit in how long a route you can plan).

Last spring I rode part of the 600k route in cyclotouriste mode over

2018-04-18 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hi Brian,

I did re-listen to those podcasts and will warn they are a little dry
unless the history of things, most especially bicycles, is of true
interest. They comprise almost entirely of an interview with Tony Hadland,
the knower and keeper of much history. I enjoyed them (again!) but there
were a lot of names and developments to keep track of. Also, be warned
that to have the rise and fall and history of such a great marque presented
in an hour or so of listening can be a little disconcerting.

That said, the intro to the program came straight out of the video so a
good segue...

I remember there was at least one edition of "The Bike Show" where Jack
biked through the old Raleigh grounds with someone who knew of all the old
buildings and such. It was great fun listening

I also found it interesting how the bars and stem were shaped and finished
