Good morning. I'm offering for sale a lightly used Brooks B67. I'm the

never been wet, always stored inside, and has been treated 2-3 times with
VO Saddle treatment. I'd like to get $80.00 shipped CONUS. Please PM with

I went with a custom All-Rounder made by Joel at Clockwork. Super easy to

out perfect.

The pictures of the one for sale could be better, but if my size I would
love to own another Clockwork.

You know, In taking these pics I was going for more of the effect of the

In all seriousness, It’s a great bike, no cracks/ never ever crashed. It’s

I haven't seen a full geometry chart for this year's run of canti-Sams. I've

clearance is likely to be. I'm confident I can get Barlows or Snoqs to fit,
with fenders, but wonder about whether there's room beyond that.

Deacon Patrick: Thanks for your paragraph! It helps a lot. I suspect that
I may be in the middle of low-carb diets. While on most days I eat almost
zero carbs, each Saturday I eat a restaurant basket of tortilla chips and
about once a week I'll eat white rice with dinner. So maybe those carbs put
me in no man's land? Also, I'm guessing I don't eat enough, period, because
my weekday lunches are small. Also, I'm skinny, so I'm thinking I have
almost no fat reserves.

Tom: Thanks for the info. I agree that I may be close to being fat-adapted,

2018-04-29 Thread Deacon Patrick
Evan,

You may not be getting enough fat colaories. I put butter on my burger (or
whatever meat I’m having). We buy ground beef with 25% fat, and it gets made
into a sauce or simply put with the meat. Essentially, 80-90% of my calories
come from fat. I eat 1-2 meals a day. “Breakfast” is coffee with cream. Lunch
is my main meal, unless I skip it, then dinner is (and generally bigger).
Dinner is usually 3 eggs of some sort (amazing nutrition in them thar yokes!).
To be Ketogenic the rule of thumb is 25 grams of carbs or less per day. To be
healthy low carb, the rule is 200-400 grams per day (I think, reference the
Perfect Health Diet for details on that as I don’t eat that way, but my wife
and daughters do — they didn’t do well on ketogenic).

Re: [RBW] How heavy a front load on lowriders on a Rivendell road bike?

2018-04-29 Thread Patrick Moore
I had front and rear racks custom made for the 2003 Road, so that I could
load front and rear, but I never get around to shopping with both, always
one or the other. I generally don't ride more than 10 miles with such
loads, so it's not a *real* problem.

Back when I had a canti Sam, I had lowrider bosses added, and as an
experiment, once carried a front load of, oh, 40 lb -- 2 X water-filled 1
gal jugs in each. Now that was scary! It felt as if the headset had
completely seized. I could only turn by leaning, so nothing more than a
very gradual turn.

And then there's the time I carried (just to see) 2 X 26 lb cinderblocks
high and forward in a Wald Newsboy on some cheap Schwinn -- Voyager or
somesuch. Now there was a trip!

[RBW] Re: Max tire width for current-generation canti-Sam?

2018-04-29 Thread tc
Rod,
The Riv page for the canti Sam states:
*"Sams are back with canti posts this time so you'll be able to fit a
larger tire (up to a 47mm with no fender)..."*

Having said that, I have a 58 side pull Sam that theoretically has a max
tire width (w/out fender) of 44. I run 44 Snoqualmie's on the stock DM18
Alexrims (inside width 18) at about 45lbs pressure in back. I can tell you
it could very likely run 47s on my Sam, with the stock side pull brakes.

[RBW] Re: Frustrated by RBW lack of inventory

2018-04-29 Thread iamkeith
Since you're reading this thread, Grant, I had an idea and some thoughts
for what they're worth:

When an item is out of stock, maybe the website could give a better
explanation of *why* its out of stock and, in certain cases, offer the
option to purchase anyway. In other words, is the item "discontinued,"
"not intended to be reordered for an indefinite period of time," or has it
"already been ordered and expected to be back in stock at a known date?"
If the later, I think I would quite often choose to complete the purchase
and include the item. And, in those cases, it would also be nice to have
the option of "hold items to consolidate for a single shipment."

Another way to think of it would be to offer the option to "reserve"
something while it's in stock, while waiting for other items to replenish.
I know this would all require extra work, but I believe that it would lead
to more sales. If others behave anything like me, I KNOW it would.

At this point in my life and as long as I have at least one functional
bike, I consider bike spending to be a first world luxury. So it's awfully
hard for me to feel "frustrated" or upset over something as trivial as
spotty inventory. In fact my experience is that it's been that way more
often than not - even before the current restructuring - and I blame my own
circumstances more than Rivendell's. I just accept that this is the
nature of the business and of life.

Nonetheless, the fact that I prioritize bikes for my discretionary spending
doesn't mean that I have a lot of discretionary income, or that I can buy
something whenever I want to. I tend to keep a running list of items I
want (not the same as need). *Then I wait until I not only have the money
to swing a purchase, but ALSO until I have the time to mess with bike
projects. So in order for me to make a purchase, there needs to be a
confluence of not only those two conditions, but also the third condition
that the desired item is available for purchase!* If it isn't, I most
often don't buy anything at all. C'est la vie. As I said, this is just a
hobby - and not being able to spend money when I want to is certainly not
going to kill me.

I am fully aware of how fair Rivendell's shipping rates are, but I will
tell you that I am still reluctant to purchase only "part" of what I
originally intended to order. It's human nature to be averse to ANY
additional shipping charges and, even if the net financial result is the
same, it's just better for my marriage if I only get one or two boxes from
Rivendell every year instead of one every month. Plus there's that whole
thing about having the time to take on a project and the desire to finish
it all at one time when I do.

I have multiple times included a comment in the notes on my order that says
something to the effect of "Hey - I had also intended to buy X product.
If by any chance it's going to be in stock soon, please let me know, feel
free to hold my shipment until it arrives, and give me a call so we can add
it to the order." But Rivendell's shipping department is so damn
efficient, I don't think anybody ever reads those. And multiple times
it's turned out where that shipment of handlebars or whatever *did *arrive
right after my order was shipped. I suppose that is mildly frustrating.
It definitely results in a non-sale where there could have been one.

Some cases in point, that may help give some insight into circumstances as
experienced by the customer:

A few years back, Rivendell had a bunch of awesome NOS Nitto stems that
were similar to a forged dirt drop, but with a lot more extension. I had
really wanted to buy one, but kept waiting until some other item came back
in stock so I could consolidate. By the time it did, those stems were gone
forever. I suppose that was frustrating too, even though it was a stupid
move and entirely my fault. Lesson learned maybe... except that my habits
haven't really changed. Had I been able to "reserve" one of those, I
would have done it.

Another: I finally received a payment from a client last week, and went to
pre-order an Atlantis frame. Of course they are sold out, so Vince put me
on a wait list. I fully intend to have the money available when they
actually land and become available again, but sometimes s---t happens. In
the last week alone, I've had unexpected expenses resulting from having to
buy plane tickets to an uncle's funeral, a broken lawnmower right as the
snow is melting for the year, an exploded $475 toner cartridge in my laser
printer, a doctor's visit for one of my kids in a neighboring state, and a
fricking speeding ticket from trying to get to it on time.

Point of all this, to mix metaphors, is that Rivendell might do well to
figure out how to make hay when the iron is hot.

[RBW] Re: 137 Wald + Which Front Rack?

2018-04-29 Thread tc
Thanks for all of the input!

I'm surprised no one mentioned Soma racks. It looks like the Soma Fab
"Lucas Mini", "Lucas 2 Mini", or "Champs Elysees" might do the trick.

Googling their Lucas rack, I found on Soma's facebook page their response
to someone asking how much it will support. Soma's response (here
) was, *"Should
handle up to 10 kgs or 20 lbs, but don't go that high if you hit potholes
or go on rough roads. it is a light duty rack. most people have a hard time
steering a bike with over 10lbs in front anyway. Sorry I did not see your
post earlier." *

I like their rack options because they retain much of the look of the M1 or
32F, but have supports down to the drop out eyelets or QR, and the supports
are more refined than what Wald sells.

I also like the idea of purchasing the 42cm Nitto struts and using them on
an M1 or 32F, but there's no official weight rating on that config.

Re: [RBW] Re: Feeling the Rivets

Interesting! My wife's B17 had the steel rivets and it was causing her
discomfort. I just recently removed the steel rivets on 2 B17's and replaced
them with copper rivets. Now all our Brooks have the copper rivets and they
really are more comfortable.

Hey Deacon: I agree. Even though I do eat coconut oil at breakfast, often
eat almond butter at lunch, and eat olive oil at dinner, I'm still likely
not getting enough fat calories. Also, I'm probably not getting 2,000

Seems like a really smart move! My guess is that the MUSA Rivs have become
a bit out of reach for many potential customers...not to mention the
Waterford lead times. This (and the new Atlantis) should help solve that.
Still wish the ETTs were the same as the older models, but I've come to
terms with my own bizarre proportions. In my aged wisdom I'll stop

[RBW] Re: Made in Taiwan AHH?

2018-04-29 Thread Jonathan D.
The catalog has information on PBH but not detailed geometry measurements. It
is really beautifuly done and I am guessing they get shipped out soon. Also
show the Billie and the Wave bars. I am waiting to use my credit for one of
those bars.

My take is that they are trying to create more size options for the made in
Taiwan bikes. They run in between and then there is the wheel size
differention. It might create some fun forum discussion again about how much a
AHH and SH compare or new Atlantis and Joe. The new Ahh does have a sloping too
tube and probably stouter steel like the SH.

[RBW] Re: Frustrated by RBW lack of inventory

2018-04-29 Thread George Schick
An issue that has not come up in this thread - but is definitely one that
places any retailer's back up against the wall - is manufacturer
discontinued stock. For example, I've noticed that certain higher-end
companies have stopped making 36 hole rims - because there has been a
dwindling demand for them in recent years. However, that leaves those who
have invested a decent amount of cash in 36 hole hubs are now up the
proverbial creek without a paddle if their rims wear out or get taco'd and
they want to replace it with the same kind (no need for fooling around with
different length spokes, etc). And there's nothing the retailer can do
about it unless he's willing to invest even more money in stock piling
products like this, betting on the future demand for NOS. It's somewhat of
a loose-loose situation for both the retailer and customers like us.

[RBW] Happy Fantastic Rivendell Perfecto Shopping Experience!

2018-04-29 Thread Grant Petersen
It's not up to me, but I wish the subject titles like "Frustrated by Riv's
lack of inventory" wouldn't stay alive for weeks. It may have made sense in
the original post, and it's no up to me to change the rules of posting or
threading or whatever, but tour inventory level right now is at the past
5-year average.

Our focus will be "fewer things but more of them." I've passed on many of
the suggestions to Dave, who deals with that end of things. We are more
limited than REI and L.L. Bean in that we buy an ecommerce package that we
can afford, and it has more limitations than the unaffordable ones.

If any of you out there is in the business of making ecommerce sites
better, or customizing them...then send both me and Dave (n...@rivbike.com)
the same emails, and when Dave comes back on Thurs...well, maybe not that
DAY, but soon after, he may get back to you. Our site runs on shopify--and
we're not likely to change that soon.

If any of you are familiar with that and can improve it, great. The last
time we hired out for help, with a shopify expert, there was that messup
with the credits--now solved, but hooboy.

There are better shopping sites than ours. I use them, too. But ours
continues to improve, if slowly, and is better now than it has been in the
past. Some of the improvements are on our end--the administration side.

I have to say...as far as e-commerce sites for smaller companies go
(bicycle-related or otherwise), the Riv one pretty damned good. Well
organized and easily navigable with just the right amount of Riv-ish quirky

ordering...except that time you guys sent me a suspended carbon frame

[RBW] Happy Fantastic Rivendell Perfecto Shopping Experience!

2018-04-29 Thread Joe Bernard
The idea that Riv has an inventory problem is bollocks. Bollocks I say! Are
they light on SRAM 11-speed road derailers? Well yeah, they have *one* because
it was the wrong order for a bike build, otherwise it isn't a thing they sell.
What Rivendell DOES have plenty of is the kind of frames, parts and gear they
specialize in. It's not a full-range-o'-discount-parts Performance Bike shop or
Amazon, and I don't expect them to have all that on hand at all times. Do they
have some of it sometimes? Sure, I've ordered about a half-ton of cheapie mtb
brake cables cuz it's 6 bucks (currently $4 on sale) so why not add it to an
order? I keep using the inner wires right away, then stacking the housing until
it's starting to look like an art project. But the point of Rivendell is the
Rivendell-ish stuff they promote, and it's usually in stock. I like the shop,
the people, the service. Two thumbs up! 👍👍

[RBW] Banner week

2018-04-29 Thread Ron Mc
I managed to get a lot of Work done, knock out 130 mi on the bike(s),
repair a bike I thought was going to be a major chore, yesterday ramrodded
12 schools putting 1380 baby rainbow trout that they had raised from eggs
in their classrooms since January, and got back on the bike today.
On Monday's ride, my NOS Cyclone GT broke its main spring - I was in the
home stretch, 3 miles from the trailhead, Put the chain on big-big to avoid
cutting the chain, and limped home.
But wait a minute, this NOS RD has over 20,000 mi on it...

and I figured this out - instead of spending $200 for another Cyclone GT,
bought a short cage NOS for $60, and rebuilt it with my long cage, so I got
a clean derailleur body and parallelogram, new spring, new jockey wheels

replaced my dead brake hoods from stores at the same time, and all new
cables (yeah, there was a Tuesday ride in there, too)

Lite lunch on Thursday's ride

11 of the 12 schools on Saturday drove 4 hours from Houston, and ok and I
met them at another BBQ stand for lunch before we headed to the river -
still have 8 schools to go over the next month, including 2 elementary
school field trips

On this morning's crack of dawn sprint from Alamo Heights to the Alamodome,
my buddy Tad debuted his recently restored Mussolini-era Umberto Dei
condorino - of all his cool bikes, this is the only one I covet.

I was followed home by a free Santana tandem project - long term

But the highlight of my week was a spirited late morning greenway ride with
my daughter the champ - she's riding the '86 Team Fuji (Ultegra 9sp) that
she built for a summer project 3 years ago

A trail steward chased us for 8 miles, and when we all stopped together at
a street crossing, exclaimed we had given her the best bike workout she can
ever remember. Then we scraped her off.
