[RBW] Goatheads and goatheads, what is rider to do?

2018-08-19 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
Just a note, a few of the Compass tires are tubeless compatible. All the new
models are, and older models are being slowly upgraded to TC.

Riv content: I will be converting my currently-tubed Naches Pass Compass tires
(559x40mm) on my Atlantis to tubeless soon; I am waiting for the Effecto
Mariposa sealant to show up (was unsuccessful finding this particular brand
locally).

Pair of Contis in very near new condition. These came on a bike I bought and
have been ridden just a few times. Switched them out for a pair of more supple
tires.

Nice tires, perfect for a commuter or town bike. Folding. Reflective sidewalls.
These go for an insane price on Amazon

so here’s your chance to get a way better deal than Jeff Bezos will give

[RBW] Goatheads and goatheads, what is rider to do?

But how does it ride at the Hutchinson recommended 80-100psi? Is it really

[RBW] Goatheads and goatheads, what is rider to do?

2018-08-19 Thread Lum Gim Fong
PS- I am really glad these tires are a great solution for you but just
wondering. That’s why I ask.
Also, the review on bike radar says Hutchison only approves certain rims for
these tires and tire has to setup for 24hrs to seal before riding.
What do you do roadside if you do get a flat? Is the setup time just for the
first mounting?
I am a logistics thinking kind of guy so just wondering about these things. I
know that goathead riders have to resort to extreme measures to ride flat free.
So I am glad you found something that works!

[RBW] Goatheads and goatheads, what is rider to do?

2018-08-19 Thread Lum Gim Fong
What rider weight and pressure?
At their recommended 70-100psi for different rider weights, how can it be as
cushy as a 45psi GB/Compass tire? Over 70psi and harshness starts to be felt
imho.

[RBW] Goatheads and goatheads, what is rider to do?

2018-08-19 Thread Don Compton
Ok, as a Roadeo owner, maybe I am not today's typical Riv owner. But,
living in Northern CA and experiencing "goathead " season, I have finally
found a solution to the problem. I finally tried "Tubeless" tires. What a
revelation. I was using Compass 32 extralights and recently got 4 flats in
6 rides ( 3 goatheads and 1 radial tire wire ).Enough is enough. I bought a
pair of Hutchison Sector 700x28 tubeless from Rex Cycles in Sacramento and
the 28s ride better than the Compass 32 extralights and in 5 rides I
haven't had a flat. Also. the tires, while riding and handling better than
the Compass tires, the combo of tire and sealer is lighter than the tire
and tube combo.I really think think this is the future of bike tires.

[RBW] Fwd: WTB: 700c wheelset with 135mm rear spacing

2018-08-19 Thread Reed Kennedy
Thanks to another list member I have been fortunate enough to adopt an A.
Homer Hilsen. This one wants 700c wheels and the rear is spaced for a 135mm
mountain / touring rear hub.

Anyone have a spare wheelset they're interested in parting with? Preference
is for something at least vaguely on the lighter side and with reasonably
wide rims. Doesn't need a dynamo (though I'd be open to that). Don't care
if the rims are tubeless compatible or not.

Happy to pay $$. Could also trade a super nice Velocity Atlas / Phil Wood
touring wheelset if you're looking to do some offroad riding or loaded
touring.

[RBW] Dynamo Lights - Sinewave, IQX, Schmidt?

2018-08-19 Thread nathaniel nichols
I have both a B IQ-x and B Luxos U on my two main rando bikes. I like the
Luxos for very long road rides to charge Garmin or phones/devices while riding
during the day and let the lamp work alone at night. It can definitely charge
and run the light at the same time tho. Another great feature of the Luxos is
the switch mounted on the handlebar, you can turn light on/off or change the
mode of the lamp without having to reach down near the spokes and also if you
need to change different charging wires it can be done from the handlebars area
where the usb dock is. One or two downsides are that it's a big light, so when
I mount it on one side of a rack I can tell there's extra weight tracking that
way, so like most dyno headlights were designed I mounted over the front wheel
on the front of my rack, this puts it in a vulnerable position and I actually
fell on some trail once and broke the outer casing of the light, luckily I
wasn't riding at night. This isn't really a problem tho if you mount it to the
center hole on the fork crown if youre rackless.

On the IQ-x is my bike I use for longer mixed terrain events, which flickers
more at low speeds but doesn't bother me because I can still see where I'm
going. With both of these lights I pair it with a high quality Coast brand head
torch mounted to my helmet, this is good for reading cue sheets or street signs
in the dark. Also good for tight single track etc. But just be cautious you
don't blind anybody around you, I usually ride alone so..  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I haven't used the other 2 lights you mentioned

[RBW] Re: Dynamo Lights - Sinewave, IQX, Schmidt?

2018-08-19 Thread William R.
I use one of the B Icon Core rechargeable lights that I bought from Peter
2-3 years ago. It is a great light that is going strong despite heavy use
and abuse. It does have a narrow yet long shaped beam. When riding on area
paths and trails in total darkness I like to pair it with an older Nite
Rider MiNute 600 rechargeable. I am very sensitive to bothering others with
its symmetrical beam though. I keep it pointed down to just light up the
area directly out in front as I ride. These two lights used in tandem on
their lowest settings provide plenty of long lasting light and security
while riding in total darkness for me. But yeah, as soon as I'm back on the
roads and just need to be seen, I turn the Nite Rider off.

Re: [RBW] Reflections On My Riv and A Weight Loss Program

2018-08-19 Thread Kiley Demond
Thanks, Clayton. My Cheviot was “Heidi”. I know about Tigr locks (it will be
hard for someone to tell me about a product I don’t already know about; just
part of my crazy). My Dutch bike (Matilda) came with a frame lock and I loved
its convenience, and the Tigr was so expensive — but, at that point I wasn’t
weight conscious, very likely the Tigr will be the next lock. Thanks.

Yep, staying is shape is priority! I grew up in NYC and walked everywhere so
even now driving as the main mode of transportation is strange to me. In
college, rode my bike all over southern California because I didn’t have a car,
but I was used to having everything at my fingertips. I would ride 10 or 15
miles just to see what a store carried. A big adjustment was driving to go
running. What? Driving to the Rosebowl to run around it?  Lifting weights is a
good idea. I lifted weights since 1978 in So Cal and only stopped when my life
went off the rails in 2014. I have always been crazy strong and I don’t want to
lose it or mobility, so thank you for that reminder as well.

Yup, tried the Tubus and the aesthetics lost. I’ll have to think about a future
rear rack. I will have racks because I like them much more than bags. That’s
one of those tradeoffs.

Great bits of information; Riv 2.0 will be patience-driven black hole — in the
future. The Cheviot was a pell-mell, silver-only, aesthetically-pleasing black
hole.

I use a Sinewave Beacon on and off-road and love it. Highly recommended!

As an aside, I have read about symmetrical and asymmetrical beams before, but I
don’t really understand why I shouldn’t use a symmetrical beam on-road. Isn’t
the light still far less bright than, say, a car’s headlights? Can’t I just aim
the beam bit more at the ground than I would off-road so it doesn’t shine in
drivers’ eyes? I’m open to being way wrong here, so any explanations are
appreciated!
