Re: [RBW] Re: Grant is asking us to not run baskets on Nitto Racks
A 27f without lowriders is basically a VO constructeur. I’d love to see a 27f, but instead of the removable lowriders you get a slightly higher/extended permanent crossbar that would be wide enough for small panniers. There seems to be a gap in the market for non huge racks that can take a basket always and panniers sometimes.aside from the pass and stow, which is great. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Weight weenie report. Dia Compe 980 brakes
It depends somewhat on rim width, but I think around 80-85 is generally what most v-brake/canti posts are set at these days? Builders will know, but I believe I read 80mm suggested on a framebuilding forum (Curt Goodrich?). That's what I used for my spacing when I redid some posts for a conversion. I'm running Tektros and they fit fine. Maybe a bit more for really wide rims? [RBW] Re: What tires fit good on 700c Sun CR18 rims?
I used levers. Still very difficult with folding Paselas. As if the tire size was too small or rim too large. Easier after getting them on first time. But still a fight. One should not have to fight to mount tires in 2018, especially when there are better sized rims out there. Never had to fight with GB rims or Synergies, at least getting them on and off was a breeze. GB bead set great. Synergies bead seat poorly. But on/off no prob. The GB Cypress was actually physically impossible to get on the CR18. The last 35% of tire would not budge and the unmounted part of bead/tire was still hanging well below rim into space next to spokes, tight and immovable. Even lubed the tire and rim to no avail. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Grant is asking us to not run baskets on Nitto Racks
Regarding the Surly rack: there was a picture in a newsletter or blog entry in the last year or so, where mark had figured out a superior way to mount it to a riv fork. He used the bosses on the top of the crown but, instead of using the straight struts and having to bend them, he used the spare pair of curved struts and attached them to the vertical rear leg of the rack instead of the horizontal cross member. Looked much better. I don't dislike the 8-pack/12-pack at all, but will agree it's too bulky and clunky against the elegant lines of a rivendell frame. Looks just right on a pugsly though. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Hilltrek Ventile Cotton Analogy Sale
I wear their Foinaven Smock. https://hilltrek.co.uk/clothing/smocks/foinaven-smock/ I got it in red after my brain healed to the point I was riding trafficed roads and needed to be seen. Before that, I had a blue Liathach Smock, but found I didn’t need the extra features (my wife wears it now ... she is too smart to ride when it’s wet or frozen out!). If I was getting a jacket only for cycling, I’d size down to a medium smock (they don’t offer their greenspot cycling jacket in cotton analogy), but since I also want to layer under, I am happy with the large. Yes, they size jackets up accordingly. Mine is a large, and that is what I generally wear in a shirt (either M long or L long, my monkey arms make it tricky). I do fine with even a boiled wool sweater underneith, though just. I’ve talked the ventile and Cotton Analogy up before, but I’ll repeat a few things for anyone new: The “analogy” part is a liner that actively pushes moisture out (both humidity and liquid) and essentially makes the jacket suitable as an insulative layer, so while the jacket is bulkier than plastic/nylon/goretex jackets, it replaces a wool shirt layer. Be aware of this, as if you want the jacket for warm/wet (which I don’t wear a jacket for) you will swelter. The jacket is perfect for Scotland/Colorado wet, where temps are 60’s or far lower when it rains or snows. Expectations when wearing: Once the outter “fake” waterproofing wears off, the jacket feels better and I think functions better, but it functions by swelling the outer layer’s cotton fibers to make them water proof. Moisture from exhurtion is then pushed out by the liner. So, the jacket gets wet and stiff from the water absorption, but the liner keeps this from soaking through to you as well as getting rid of sweat. [RBW] Re: Grant is asking us to not run baskets on Nitto Racks
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I can't currently think of a front rack that is less-attractive to my eye than a Surly 8-pack. That tells you more subjectively about my eye than it does objectively about the Surly 8-pack rack, but I think it's a pretty gross design, and I'd totally run one on my bike, provided that I was dead set on running a front rack, and I had exhausted every other possible option. I don't know for sure, but I have seen at Rivendell Bicycle Works, a rack 'laying around' that looked exactly like a Nitto F27 rack, but was missing the detachable front lowriders and the rack had no attachment points for any detachable front lowriders. When I asked "what's that?", they said "prototype for something we're thinking about". So, I'm not a betting man, and I don't know for sure, but If I was a betting man, I'd bet that the "Nitto Basket Rack" from Rivendell would resemble a Nitto 27F, without the detachable lowriders. I would also bet that it's price would land somewhere in between the Nitto 32F that Rivendell sells for $140, and the Nitto 34F that Rivendell sells for $218. I have three bikes that currently run a Wald Basket on a front rack. All three racks load the front hub at the dropout, and use the up-top connection point as only a rotation-resistor. They are: 1. Wald huge basket on Nitto 34F rack on HubbuHubbuH tandem 2. Wald medium basket on Nitto F20 "Mt Campee" rack on Medium Mountain Mixte 3. Re: [RBW] Re: Grant is asking us to not run baskets on Nitto Racks
I appreciate the versatility of the Surly 8-Pack Rack, but the erector-set-style mounting gives me the heebies. Even if it works well and doesn't rattle loose it just looks... bad. I'm planning to try the Soma Champs Élysées Mini Front Rack for my new-to-me Hilsen: https://www.modernbike.com/soma-champs-elysees-front-mini-rack---stainless But it very much looks to be a rack intended to support a brevet bag (if that) and not much more. Soma doesn't list a weight limit, but I doubt it's basket-worthy. I've got the same rim. I haven't tried mounting tires ENTIRELY without levers, but my Pasela 32's mount just fine. Had a flat today on a ride and had it changed in 5-6 minutes. I would recommend Pedro's tire levers: https://pedros.com/products/tools/wheel-and-tire/tire-levers/. I broke several tire levers over a few years, then found these at my LBS like 4 years ago. I've lost one, but haven't broken any. And the flat I changed today I only used one lever. The other just sat there looking unloved. Just my two cents. [RBW] Re: Ride Report: Buffalo to Albany on the Erie Canal
Thank you for your write up! I thoroughly enjoy reading your's (and everyone's) write-ups, along with your pics. It's even more motivating to me to do longer rides, especially since we both have Appaloosas. Re: [RBW] Pacenti Brevet 700c rim questions.
Brevet rims are tubeless-ready, so they're closer to the "tricky" end of the spectrum for mounting. I have Pacenti PL23 650b rims (tubeless-ready), and they're tougher to mount tires on than the Synergy rims I used previously. However, tires bead up more reliably on tubeless-ready rims, once you get them mounted. Synergy rims required wrestling and soap each time to get the tire fully seated on the bead. [RBW] WTB: Small Riv or Riv-ish Frame
I've been searching on and off for a replacement frame for my wife who's about 5'4". She's been riding an older Lotus touring frame that's been a PITA to work on over the years, though gets the job done day to day. She typically commutes on her bike with a rear rack, but occasionally wants to put a front rack on for fully loaded touring. I'm hoping that a new frame will be built around smaller wheels (26" or 650b), as her current frame looks nearly clown-like with it's 48cm seat tube, a headtube the size of the lug alone, and seemingly gigantic 700c wheels. Canti posts preferably, capability to fit 35mm+ tires, front/rear rack and fender mounts. In this case, color does matter and frames may be rejected based on their color alone, which I have no control over :-) Anyone have anything sitting around that fits the bill? PM off-list please, Mike in Seattle -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: PSA: sweet frame for tall person
I was bidding in the $500 - $800 range, once it passed $800.00 I just couldn't afford it. 66cm Rambos seem to be ultra-rare. I'll probably end up getting a custom frame at this point I think.
