[RBW] Re: Bar-end brake levers on Albastache?

2018-09-01 Thread Jeremy Tavan
I use and love bar-end brake levers on my albastache-cockpit commuter bike.
For shifting it has a shortened-and-rubber-capped Silver shifter on a
thumbie on the right side. On the curves, tandem stoker knobs provide
another grip location which I find I basically never use, so I'm thinking
about removing them next time I'm working on that bike. But the levers are
very convenient, and I can brake with them from all the various positions
around the bars. Recommended.

[RBW] Re: New(-to-me) Quickbeam

2018-09-01 Thread iamkeith
Wait, did you say XC pro?! If I'm not mistaken, those are self energizing
which licensed the pederson technology - which means that they are front and
rear specific and, if you accidentally mix things up, they wont work well.
(I've also heard it could be dangerous by causing them to lock up, but that
might be an urban myth for all I know.) I'd look for F markings to make sure
you haven't mis-matched halves or bought two "front" sets or something, and
then search mtbr using "pederson" or "self energizing" or "xc pro canti setup
help." You'll probably find what you need. Seems like they were a bit of an
acquired taste, but well built.

Yup, Garth's right, my body has hooked on all kinds of stuff over the years.
Run the bar enders with confidence, I successfully used them as I suggested,
with interrupters up front. As long as there's no shifters to worry about the
bars won't be so busy as to be annoying, and so very practical!

[RBW] Re: Bar-end brake levers on Albastache?

2018-09-01 Thread Garth

Bar end brake levers are great for bars such as both Albas and the swept
back(non drop) ones . Easily activated with just a pinkie and/or the next
finger. I find it more easily accessed too , I can't put it into words
it'll just be apparent as you use them.

Kai, I hear that often by those that have never used them. I've gone
through some brush and frankly I can't see it happening even if I tried. If
you are running THAT close into really knarly stuff, you could be brought
down regardless of the lever, not necessarily the lever. If we wanna play
the "anythings possible angle", gotta play it all the way for every "part"
including the rider !

[RBW] Bar-end brake levers on Albastache?

2018-09-01 Thread Kainalu V.
The only thing that makes me nervous about reverse brake levers is the horrid
bushwacking hook where the lever acts to hook a branch rather than deflect it,
but if you don't find yourself on tightly shrubbed trails, I think there is no
better lever. And if you pair them with interrupter levers way out front you'd
be giving yourself a quick brake option at any point along that sweet
albastache curve.

[RBW] Bar-end brake levers on Albastache?

2018-09-01 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Tully, I’ve not run bar end brake levers on the New Moustache (aka Albastache),
but for years I ran bar end shifters on the Hunqapillar with new moustache
bars. If your question is about room, you should be just fine. Now my
Hunqapillar is the Hunqabeam, so the gear shifter is the engine with an allan
wrench. Grin.

With abandon,

[RBW] Re: New(-to-me) Quickbeam

2018-09-01 Thread Tully Lanter
Thanks, all, for the brake tips. The mounts do have three holes, but this
particular model (Suntour XC Pro) uses an internal spring. Haven't opened
it up yet, but should be simple enough, based on this explanation
.
There's more cable drag than I'd like for the rear (probably my own fault!)
so I haven't ruled that out, either.

Meanwhile, the front feels *excellent *and is already making me a fan of
canti's!

Philip - The other neat thing about the PDW mounts, as you might already
know, is that they can break away. Quite reassuring on wooded trails!
