Mine has a few rust bubbles from my extreme sweat. overall, paint is not bad

[RBW] Packing and/or shipping bike damage: Any strategies for successful resolution?

2018-10-11 Thread tc
BikeFlights claim submitted yesterday.

For those unaware, even if you call BikeFlights, their phone answering service
navigates you to a “Do you want to make a claim” menu, then dumps you to a
place to record a msg. Then they reply via email, which has a From name that
looks nothing like BikeFlights (“Obenza” in my case, a claims support
specialist).

In the email, they echo the amount of Protection you purchased, then ask for
your damage repair cost estimate, plus any photos of both the box and bike.

After I replied with that information last night, they sent a confirmation
email (looked automated) and said they’d be in touch. Fingers crossed.

The bike shop owner has yet to call me. If BikeFlights doesn’t come through
then I will pursue discussion with the shop owner. Regardless they’re getting
an earful from me on how poorly they’ve handled this.

Thanks everyone who responded with advice. I did find a low ridge inside
the lug, which extends about 1/3 of the way around the inside of the lug.
It looks like where the seat tube ends. Now I have to figure out how to
file that smooth without scraping the paint at the top of the lug.

2018-10-11 Thread ascpgh
My orange Rambouillet is looking well-loved. "Beausage" may communicate
four on a scale of ten; patina, the wear of work.

"Beausavage" is what my finish has at the 16 year mark. Some of those look
like they might have left a mark, because they did. Others tell less
intense stories of situation and circumstances memorable.

Not trying to retain cosmetic perfection, not being a shoddy owner. Just

I have a tapered round file. It lets you get in there at a slight angle so you

[RBW] Re: Seat post slippage

2018-10-11 Thread Brian Campbell
FWIW, I have owned 3 Rivs (AHH/Hunq/Custom) and ALL have needed to have the
seat tubes reamed to the correct size. All three would scratch up seat
posts terribly when they were inserted. I spent about 3 hours with a brake
cylinder hone and 400 grit sand paper getting the AHH seat tube so that it
would not mar seat posts. Also none of the seat lugs were over tightened.

I took the Hunq and the Custom to a local builder and had him ream the seat
tubes with the proper size tool. Both had metal shavings that needed to be
removed from the bottom brackets afterward. That tells me that something
was not correct/complete in the frame prep, at least in my case(s). If I
were to buy another Riv frame the fist step would be a though going over by
a builder/shop to ensure everything is correct.

My AHH needed to have the derailleur hanger aligned as it was bent (maybe
in shipping) and would not allow for proper indexing when shifting. The
frame was brand new from RIv. It works fine now and has for the last 7
years. It was not a big deal just something to be aware of when working
with steel frames. They might need a few tweaks now nd again.
.

[RBW] Re: How’s your original Rambouillet paint holding up?

2018-10-11 Thread iamkeith
Remember that the original decal sets are all gone. (Or, at least there was a
thread that said so about a year ago.) So a repainted Ram might become a
Renovelo unless Riv could provide the artwork for a group order run of decals
from somewhere.

I don't need one yet but, since I intend to never sell the bike, I'd sure buy a
spare for if/when the repaint time come.

Both my wife and I have blue ones. Her decals are a bit scuffed from bike
racks and such. Biggest durability issue seems to be the thinness of the
clearcoat over those decals.

I baby mine WAY too much, so mine looks very good still. But I use it less than
I want and less than she uses hers, too - which is an interesting issue, though
it sounds like I'm alone:

As much as I like the blue, it is a bit too flashy and loud and bright for me.
I always feel conspicuous so, between that and my perfectly-curated, polished
silver components and matching bags, I tend to not ride it if I'll see a lot of
people. (Unless it's a bluebird sunny day, when it remarkably tends to blend
in with the sky). If/when I repaint, it will be in a darker, more muted hue
that doesn't draw so much attention.

[RBW] OT FS: Brompton BWC Edition

2018-10-11 Thread Joe Bernard
Off topic, but Brompton seems to be the official Oh Yeah, I Also Have This
Other Bike In The Closet of Riv Riders so hear ya go.

2018 S6L Brompton World Championships Edition, 300 worldwide this year, 20 in
the US.

Started as a flatbar model, then I added the Perennial Cycles Evo+ riser kit
with longer cables which adds a bit of height and width. I'm slowly discovering
that what I thought was a temporary injury in my right wrist is in fact
arthritis (runs in my family), so even this nicely balanced riding position
isn't working for me. I was thinking of trying another higher bar like the M-
or H-model Brommies use, but at this point think I'd rather just sell this one
and buy another with the bars I need.

Bought new this summer, ludicrously low miles, ti shock ($80), ti/alloy TPW EZ
Wheels (also $80), Ergon grips, will also send original flatbar. Comes with
stock saddle, not Brooks.

I have about $2k into it and looking for $1600 shipped. I'm not going to take a
major loss but will entertain offers..if I can't sell it close to asking then
I'll go ahead and do another bar swap and keep it. Which is what I probably
should do anyway!

$1600obo shipped. Check it out:

[RBW] Frankendini

2018-10-11 Thread Joe Bernard
Here's an update/finished build on my Sparkly Orange Roadini, which answers the
question, "What if you intentionally oversized a dropbar bike for flatbars?" I
think Will @ Riv will like it, he's into putting the "wrong" parts on a bike.

I had picked up an old Bianchi Project 5 with a Softride suspension stem, but
the bars were too low on that bike. Then it dawned me that the stem would work
just dandy on my Leo, so here ya go!

Riser bar, XTR 9-speed shifter someone here sold me, Suntour dt for the front,
NOS Dia-Compe levers, Ergon grips, old Sakae cranks and BB from an RB-T, NOS
Shimano RX100 fd (from France!), NOS Deore LX rd (Japan!), Mavic/105 wheels,
11-34 XT cassette, Jack Browns, MKS Touring pedals, Woody's Chop Chort fenders
with huge gaps that are different front and back..Grant won't even be able to
look at those fender lines!

It's a fun bike with almost no standover, but here's an amusing thing I
discovered: When I first come to a stop and throw a leg over to hop off, the
suspension is slightly compressed..instant standover clearance! Check it out.

[RBW] In praise of the Betty - Ride report

2018-10-11 Thread Lynne

I took an unexpectedly long ride on Betty Foy the other evening and thought
I'd report on how it went. I just purchased Betty a few weeks ago from CL -
she had hardly been ridden. I believe my Betty has a Bosco handlebar.

I now have 2 Rivs - a Betty and a Sam. I recently changed the handlebar on
the Sam from a Noodle to a Chocobar and was looking forward to taking it
out for a longer ride. My husband and I had an opportunity to ride to a
nearby town for dinner and I was excited for this to be my first longer
ride (32 miles RT) on Sam. Got dressed, packed the Banana Sack and was
about to hop on Sam when I noticed a flat tire. Boo! We had to get going
and I didn't feel like changing the tube so I grabbed the Betty and decided
to give her a whirl instead. I wasn't sure how that would feel for a longer
ride but this was a precious opportunity so I took the plunge. We figured
if I was very uncomfortable, we could turn around and enjoy dinner in Davis
instead.

Turns out, riding Betty was a delight. We had a great ride to Winters, had
a wonderful dinner on the patio while keeping an eye on the bikes, then
rode home in the dark. (We had good lights and the roads are rural and
largely free of traffic.) We rode under the stars, even got to see the
Milky Way on the way home. Betty exceeded my expectations, having only
ridden upright bikes such as this Betty on shorter, in-town rides. I was
also surprised at the good speed I maintained on the ride, despite being in
an upright position. Most of my previous experience on long rides has been
on a carbon fiber road bike, but I'm a convert to steel bikes - especially
Rivs.

Cheers,
Lynne

[RBW] FS: Misc. Nitto, Sugino, White, Dia Compe, VO parts

2018-10-11 Thread Tully Lanter
After cockpit experiments and a partial bike sale, my parts bin runneth
over. I need these gone before I go looking for another frame to put them
them on...

Everything is solid with normal signs of wear unless otherwise noted.

1) Nitto Albastache bars, $40
2) Velo Orange Porteur bars, $20. Barely used.
3) Nitto Technomic 100m quill stem, $35.
4) Nitto Dirt Drop 80mm stem, $40. Lightly used.
5) White Industries DOS ENO 17t/19t freewheel, $50.
6) Sugino chainrings (38, 42, 46, 52), $10 each.
7) Sugino bashguard (up to roughly 42t), $30. Barely used.
8) Nitto Crystal Fellow seatpost, $50. 27.2mm diameter. About 25cm to the
clamp, 20cm to the setback portion.
9) Dia Compe 980 cantilever brakes (the new ones), $40. Barely used.
10) Dia Compe non-aero levers, 2 pairs. One has slightly better hoods.
Includes 3 olive ferrules, just one shy. $15 for both. Older.
11) Dia Compe inverse brake levers, $10. Older.
12) Suzue QR front track hub, $30. Older. (Still in an original Quickbeam
wheel, but the rim is probably too worn to justify shipping the whole
thing.)

Everything plus actual shipping from 98052. Probably ~$15 for the bars and
down from there, less whatever I can combine.
