only if you don't maintain the bike properly by adjusting the pads as

[RBW] Re: Alternatives to lift-a-tube

2018-11-21 Thread Erik Wright
I thought I'd jump back in about a month later to update with what I came
up with. I had a DIY lift a tube in the back of my mind these past few
weeks, and last week went to a hardware store for some lightbulbs and
decided to stand around in there looking for things I could use to make a
lift-a-tube. Well, a 90 degree PVC corner thing and some clamp-y things
turned out to do the trick, and I now have a lift-a-tube. The usefulness is
out of this world. I might just have to make one of these for all of my
bikes!

[RBW] Potential Trade: 56cm Toyo Atlantis for something taller

2018-11-21 Thread David B
Backstory:
I've been encouraging a friend over the past several years to get into
cycling from a "Just Ride" perspective, and have helped source, then
trade/sell frames as he figured out what he likes. He picked up a 56cm Toyo
Atlantis a few years back after trying out a Clockwork custom frame we
bought used - the Clockwork was a gateway to wanting something with larger
tire capacity, but also something lugged, and with gears (Clockwork was a
single speed). I believe that Clockwork frame went to someone on this list.
He has since moved out of town to central Illinois, and riding
significantly less, and wants to part ways with the Atlantis. Since I took
a large chunk of time putting together the build for him, we're trying to
figure out a way for me to get parts back and such, and is offering the
frame/bike to me at a reasonable price considering my time investment.
However... a 56cm frame is several sizes too small for me. So I'm
considering my options and whether I should suggest he try it sell the
complete bike to someone else or not.

My main point of all of this is to see if there's a potential trade out
there for the frameset.
It'd be...
Rivendell Atlantis - Toyo built, 56cm, takes 26"/559mm wheels
for
Another Rivendell of some sort, but in the range of 60cm-66cm size (my pbh
is ~93cm)

Any potential trades out there? Feel free to contact me offlist.
Thanks,
David

Re: [RBW] Re: Carradice style saddlebag advice for 51cm Roadini?

2018-11-21 Thread Patrick Moore
The Carradice canvas is still pretty thick and stiff, at least those I've
recently bought (though, warning, that of the Junior I just received is not
as nice as that of the Nelson LF and Camper LF I got earlier this year or
late last year. But still, using the Jr and the SQR, even a big lock won't
make it sag as much as the more supple fabric of the Cartwright bags.

And, you can always insert a stiffener.

But there are always the Bagman support and the "Classic" support, which
seems even better than the Bagman, though it requires more vertical room
than the SQR, *and* saddle loops:
https://www.carradice.co.uk/products/saddle-fixing-systems/carradice-classic-saddlebag-rack
.

I've have preferred one of these if I used saddle with the loops.

[RBW] PSA: 20% Discount on Cheviot Presale Frames

2018-11-21 Thread John Buglino
Love mine! Totally agree with Will's BLUG post, easily one of my favorite
bikes ever! So versatile, and for me the ease of shouldering under the saddle
for stairs is much appreciated.

Re: [RBW] Re: Alternatives to lift-a-tube

2018-11-21 Thread Patrick Moore
Clever! Though, if the bike were a Rivendell, I'd want something
classier-looking. I'll be you could with reasonable ease, some thickish
leather strapping, and pop rivets, come up with something equal in
aesthetic effect to a Riv frame.

BUT! I'd not add something like this unless I had regularly to carry my
bike up flights of stairs, or onto public transportation.

Me, I am blessed with a 2-car garage and no car (my daughter, mostly with
her mother, drives my car; I just pay for it), so I don't need to carry
bikes very often. But back when I lived in a second-floor apartment, I
hoisted them with my right arm, grasping them mid-seat-tube just above the
st bottle cage, and carry them front-wheel-down, supporting the weight on
my right arm. I tried this just now with the 30-lb Matthews with very short
(17" c-c?) st, and it works a treat.

Re: [RBW] Re: Alternatives to lift-a-tube

2018-11-21 Thread Patrick Moore
To be more clear: Grab seat tube just above bottle cage with right hand,
hoist bike, front wheel hanging down, to shoulder level, so that your arm
forms a very tight "L" bed, with fist just forward of your shoulder. Climb
your stairs.

[RBW] N+3 🤦🏻‍♂️

2018-11-21 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
Rode less this past calendar year than any other during the last decade
(following a minor knee surgery, early retirement, and working as much as ever
but only doing so doing things I want and love).
Planned solution: downside fleet and refocus cycling priorities for this next
stage of my life.
Reality: several bike trades with amazing kind, generous, tall, fellow RBW
Owners.
The next 7 days has me receiving 3 new (used) Rivs I have purchased in the last
3 days!
Builds, impressions, comparisons to come. Welcome to my madness!
Sincerely,

[RBW] N+3 🤦🏻‍♂️

2018-11-21 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
I am going to rationalize that I am in good company with you Trader Joe!
Looking at the glass as half full, we both do our part to support others Riv
dreams.  Fortunately for me I buy used almost always because of my 99.5 PBH;
however I did buy a large Hubbah tandem, and Will’s Bosco designed Jumbo
Mountain Mixte new!
Everything else I buy “used” holds it’s value incredibly well; so I essentially
have free will to experiment before passing things on again.
Exception being when I keep another, and another, and another!

Thankful to Grant and company for bikes that fit.
Thankful for Joe, William, and a few others for being able to justify to my
wife “just” how sane I am stillbike wise.

I've also been waiting for a 26" wheeled bike from Riv since the
all-rounder. Although I'm not a short rider (I'm 6' tall, with 89cm PBH), I
want to ride a 26" wheeled bike once again. Quick, nimble, fun, and
versatile tire sizes. I love my Sam, but I'd buy a 26"er in a heartbeat if
one was offered.

The 26" Surly LHT fits Rat Taps with fenders, and is a hoot to ride. (Lest
anyone feel the need to reflexively advance the "feels dead" trope, let me
suggest that Compass tires have a vivifying effect). But agree, a Riv offering
