R-12 achievement unlocked. [12 consecutive months of 200km or more RUSA event ]

Super 600k [RUSA 600KM with 10,000 m/34,000 ft elev.]

My end of year RUSA mileage was 8 200k's, 3 populaires, 1 360k flèche, 2
300k's, 2 400k's, and 2 600k's. Plenty of those were mixed terrain rides. Plus
a hand full of century or 200k's I did by myself. Plus lots of PR's hit and
improved too.

For 2019 I will do the Super Randonneur series again with SFR and do PBP in

Re: [RBW] Appaloosa 1x9 issue/question

2018-12-08 Thread William R.
Good advice Patrick! I did consider going down to a 36t chainring. And if this
new cassette is less than hoped I may yet. Or like you say, go back to the way
I had it in the first place and just LCG it when pedaling is no longer optimal!
Now that I consider it, I’m beginning to wonder what I was thinking. Oh well,
as long as it’s on and all set up, I might as well try it and see how it goes
;-).

Re: [RBW] Appaloosa 1x9 issue/question

2018-12-08 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Alternatives to the excellent advice already given:

— keep the old cassette (or get one that goes to 36) and switch to a 36
chainring. How much do you use the 11t? Test it by riding one gear up (lower
gearing) on the downhills and see how you do. You’ll max out and coast a bit
sooner is all.
— keep the entire old setup and walk a bit more often as you get stronger in
that low gear.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for brake shoes?

2018-12-08 Thread Sean PNW
Kool Stop Thinline Salmons for my bikes.

Mike Varley of Black Mountain made a pretty good case for their use within
this handy blog post from several years ago, 'Get the most out of your
canti brake…':

*Pad thickness: Thick vs. thin*

*Thick pads are squishy. When you apply the brakes on a bike with thick
pads by squeezing the lever, the pad hits the rim and as you squeeze, you
might feel mush. Part of that is the pad compressing. To solve this
issue, thin brake pads are immensely helpful. The KoolStop Thinline pad
works great. Very little flex/compression going on at the brake pad if you
are running Thinline pads. Probably the main reason Paul Components
supplies their brakes with these pads. But the thin pads will wear out
faster. So what. This simply means that the brake adjustment – the pad to
rim contact – will be optimal longer. You’re not going to have the pads
wearing at an angle as you would with thick pads and the chances of the pad
diving under the rim are greatly reduced. *

Compressionless housing makes a noticeable difference in braking
performance and 'feel', it seems pretty reasonable to expect the same
principal should apply to brake pads as well

Eric and Joey: thanks. My thinking was along these lines but I wasn’t sure. I
will try some of both, b-tension screw and more chain. I guess I will try
adding 4 links to start? It’s a fairly new chain. I do have more new chains
though. And I saw there was still quite a lot of b-tension adjustment left. I
will try using what I’ve got to start. I will let you know how it all turns
out. Thanks again.
