The REI Passage 1 is a pretty decent one-person tent. It retails for $140
and comes in at about 4 lbs. I used one for a couple years. -Shawn

[RBW] Lack of Betty Foys for sale.

2019-01-17 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have owned 2 NOS Betty Foy frames that were sold before being ridden for the
two beautiful women in my family. My wife said she was giving up riding 12
years ago when our children transitioned into drivers training and a faster
means of freedom. fortunately she did a 180 and wanted me to get her a new
bike. I found a NOS Betty but she was right on the border of sizes. After
accumulating 650B wheels and everything needed for a spectacular build she
asked me to sell it so us non drinking non gambling souls could take a trip to
VEGAS with her sister and husband.Next I called RBW and they found a last
60 or 62cm hidden in their glittering cave somewhere. This was to be a HS
graduation gift for my daughter to take to college where she planned to play
NAIA volleyball. After 2 years of rehabbing knee injuries the large BF was
passed along to a list member who reached out to me regarding the bike for her
tall significant other. Unfortunately my daughter needed a rare knee surgery
only performed by several doctors in the world and was limited to swimming,
golf, and biking for the balance of her upon graduation from college at 21. I
purchased a large Clementine withdyno hub and light and gave it to her for
graduation and refused to take it back. We have ridden together many times in
her new city about an hr away from my wife and I. It is something wonderful to
explore the historic and cultural areas surrounding her residence as a young
homeowner in Beer City USA Grand Rapids MI. Unfortunately her new husband who
is perfect in so many ways has a complete dislike of riding bikes. The silver
lining is I still get regular rides with my adult daughter

Long story short; why do I not ever see these great bikes for sale. The
Cheviot is a masterful minor upgrade it am shocked more Betty riders have not
made an upgrade: is it the brilliant color and paint job, a loyal connection
between rider and bike, or the perception that the longer chain stays are not
enough of a change to make the switch?

Just curious.

Re: [RBW] 31.8 Quill Stems

2019-01-17 Thread Mike K.
FWIW, I’m using the Origin8 quill stem and love it. But I did consider the
threadless stem with the adapter. Went with the 31.8 quill because of price,
but the stem+adapter combo is still in the table if I think I need more height.

[RBW] Re: Boyz on the Hoods: 4th Annual Escape from Super Bowl Weekend Campout

2019-01-17 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Philip, a begenning tent recommendation is somewhat like someone asking for a
begenning bike recommendation. Sardonic grin.

First, borrow one from someone if you can. You’ll learn a lot about what you
like and don’t like and why. Of course the risk is you break it you buy it and
you may not want it.

If you just want protection from dew/frost and light rain, a tarp is all you
need. Go uber elite with the tarp and add a trekking pole to one corner and
three stakes to the others and it’ll do well even in a moderate downpoor. Cheep
and light, but also airy (problimatic in colder weather) and buggy (both
crawlies and airborn). This is likely the least expensive way to go for a test
tent system and any quality ripstop medium weight nylon tarp will work from
your local surplus store. Or just bring the fly from you big tent. Grin.

Hammock camping is well worth trying, but set ups vary and if the temp drops
below 40 you need insulative layers under/outside the hammock. Not all sites
allow hammocks or have the trees they require, but they are wonderful in treed,
sloped areas that are uncampable by tent.

Tents: Until you know you are wanting to do this often in varying conditions
regardless of weather forecast, you will learn a lot with a Walmart equivilant
or el-cheepo Campmore or REI bargain 1-2 person tent. Avoid the ultralight
tents untill you know you want to spend a lot for a tent that any real weather
will shred around you when it matters. No need to buy a pricy tent yet. Most
work just as well/poorly as the el-cheepos.

Once you know you are dumb enough to go camping regardless of the weather and
since you are biking a 3.5 pound tent that sets up easily (you pitch the fly
and the tent is already pitched inside. Brilliant.) and dry inside even if you
packed it wet and stands up to any weather, any season, any continent, buy a
Hilliberg Akto. Need shade on a hot day? Push the inner tent to the side and
you have a covered and breezy porch. A bit like my raingear quest leading to
the ultimate answer in ventile, I tried way too many tents before I caved and
tried Hilleberg the Tentmaker and on the first trip wished I’d bought the right
tent from the start.

With abandon,
Patrick

I’m kicking off the new year by trying some bike camping.
I’ll either schlep the heavy tent I got for the Riv Jamboree, or invest in a

So glad you are riding the heck out of that great bike. You have it looking

For others, I bought Stephen’s 650b 56cm Hunq this summer after he sized up to

to give him the chance to buy it. In addition to wonderful bikes, Riv has
introduced this group and its members into my life. What great gifts.

These pictures make me miss my Cheviot. It’s a surprisingly lively ride,
and as a tall guy, I love that huge head tube.

Don’t miss the brakes, though. V brakes and discs point out the flexy

Hmm.

I've got my Sam set up as a 1x, and I still routed the shifter (11sp bar-end)
to the left side of the downtube, then crossed it over to the proper channel
under the bottom bracket en route to the derailer. It just makes for a more
natural cable routing, I feel...and helps with paint rub.

[RBW] Re: How to select a Brooks saddle

2019-01-17 Thread John Phillips
Has anyone measured the width & length of their Cambium C19? Brooks says
all versions of the C19 are 275mm long & 184mm wide.

I was about to order the All Weather Carved C19 after reading some people
found carved version to be a bit more comfortable, but I wasn't sure if my
sit bones would fit between the rivets. Then I remembered I had one of the
older original C19's sitting somewhere in the closet. So I dug it out, sat
on it and tested where my sit bones were, then I measured the distance
between the rivets, the overall width and overall length.

My C19 is 176mm wide and 270mm long, not the 184mm wide and 275mm long
listed on the Brooks England website.

So, could anyone tell me what the actual dimensions of the new All Weather
version of the C19 actually are?

Maybe I'm just cranky today, and this doesn't amount to a hill of beans,
but if the All Weather C19's are even less wide, I'd like to know before I
order one.

Thanks much,
John

[RBW] Re: Gus Boots Willsen on Shell Ridge

2019-01-17 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
I undersand, Phil. I’m talking spreading them out over years. Grin. But, if it
is truly a buy one to do it all, that’d be the Atlantis. The AHH and Boots are
nearly on opposite sides of the spectrum, with Boots pushing the spectrum
farther into the hillybike than the Hunqapillar or Bomba.

I own a Quickbeam (somewhat equivilant to an AHH on the spectrum) and Hunqabeam
(Hunqapillar converted to Quickbeam dropouts to also be fixed). QB’s fantastic
for all terrains, though it is underbiking on singletrack and very underbiking
on technical singletrack. For me, it doesn’t take a touring load with enough
stability I’m comfortable (but I’m uber picky about that), and I wouldn’t take
it bikepacking. Hunqa’s brilliant for everything very similar to the Atlantis
in that respect, though on the stouter side and great for bikepacking, though
bikepacking technical singletrack (like the Colorado Trail) is underbiking. If
I had to choose one, it’d be the Hunqa, as it does everything including
bikepacking.

And that’s my dilemma with Boots. Can I justify it? Hunqabeam is 90% there in
terms of what a custom bikepacking bike would be for me, the Boots near 100%.
Can I justify the expense with a family of six and an aging septic sized for
two, just for greater ground clearence, fatter tires, and longer chainstays?
The decision point is approaching! Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Bikepacking 27.5+ v. 29+

2019-01-17 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Next question for those with fattish tire experience: differences in rollover
and gearing/effort for 27.5 and 29 in the 2.8” width.

Context, if it’s not immediately obvious: Boots. I fit either the large (27.5)
or xl (29). Application is bikepacking and daily riding, 1/3 each on average
paved, dirt, singletrack.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hillborne dropbar, bar-ends: Cross shifter housings then cables?

2019-01-17 Thread Pancake
Is this summary correct?:

Standard routing is not to cross the cables. Keeps them short.

But crossing them is an acceptable alternative that increases housing length a
little, while possible avoiding some frame rub. May require tinkering under the
downtube where the cables cross back for certain frames.

Thanks for the fast replies. I’ll finish up my handlebars today. Loads of rain
so no test ride likely, but it’ll be very nice to have the bike back in
operating order! First bar-end, dropbar assembly for me. I’ll start with
regular cork tape while testing out where I like the bars/levers, then
Newbaum’s and clear shellac by April.

Thanks again,
Abe

2019-01-17 Thread hugh flynn
I don't remember when I first learned about the cross in front/recross
under the downtube method but yeah, if you are looking for ways to minimize
paint rub, it's a good option.

As noted below, under tube bottle mounts can get in the way, but that
varies by bike. On one frame, I had to add spacers under the cage to keep
the cables from hitting it, but that was a simple fix. You definitely want
to make sure there's nothing hitting/obstructing the cables. Other than
that, never had an issue with it.
