Iā€™m running a cargo site (caveat: V1 and for non bike stuff) and wouldnā€™t
recommend it if Wordpress is too complicated. If itā€™s just photos and
occasional writing, why not a tumblr or something more picture based? You could

Huh. I took a deeper dive and it looks like folks have been having issues
with the platform for a couple of weeks.

Actually, it looks like they've been having issues with the platform since
Day 1, but alas.

I find WordPress easy to drive, but not necessarily easy to build.

I'm not familiar with either of the other two platforms you mentioned.

There's Cargo as well if you are OK with
spending TheGrid-ish monies per annum, though many of their templates are
aimed at the design sensibilities of folks half my age.

Not sure what qualifies as "no longer accessible and appears defunct," but
their
own status page shows more or less 100% up time

In any case, WordPress is super easy out of the

[RBW] Another Thread on Generator Hub Wiring

2019-01-29 Thread Brian Campbell
Sorry to start a second thread but I did not want to confuse the other
thread as my question is focused on on specific area. The back story:

Took my 2013 AHH frame to Hanford cycles in Philadelphia to get mounts
added for a set Paul center pull brakes. I also had them add a number of
braze-ons for direct fender mounting access for internal wiring (fork and
down tube) as well as a chain hanger. I passed on the dedicated rear stop
and decided to use the Surly seat post hanger I already owned ( I know
someone would ask!).

I also had a set of Honjo smooth 50mm fenders painted the same color as the
frame, since they were doing a color match/re-paint on the areas that
needed to be touched up. It all came out great and I am in the process of
building the bike.

The Schmidt headlight is mounted on the front fender (using and extra stay
for stability, I know some would ask) and the rear taillight a Velo Lumino,
fender mount model is on the rear.

The rear fender is wired such that the lighting wire is easily disconnected
and fender removed if need be. My question is how best to do this with
front fender and wiring runs? I would like to keep the connections out of
sight if possible but want to be able to remove the fender as a unit simply
by unbolting and disconnecting the wires:

So the pics show where I am at. I am thinking that the taillight wire can
be connected in a similar fashion to the rear (posted above) and be hidden
under the fork crown. The headlight wire, I am thinking will run under the
fender, come through a hole under the fork crown and be joined with the
wire from the fork with one of these Schmidt coax quick disconnects:

I am struggling with where to "hide" the connection. Suggestions for thing
I ma not have considered much appreciated!

[RBW] Re: Thoughts: Downsizing the bike stable and dual-purposing bikes

2019-01-29 Thread Edwin W
In my family biking experience, I will expect you to have an easier time
with her up front than in the back. I find that a kid in the back affects
the ride MUCH more than a kid up front. My current family is the stoutest
of stout Workcycles Fr8 and I have the kid saddle mounted on the downtube.
I can put my 12 year old and toodle around with him in front of me. But
when I have a kid on the back, I have to make sure the tires are pumped up
enough and it is much more noticeable.

I know I did not answer your question except to say: keep her up front as
long as you can!

And I like Deacon P's suggestion of putting the seat over there with the
current set up.

Good luck,

Edwin

Clem H with a front seat with our (currently) 18month old. When winter hit
the NE I regrettably put the Clem H on hiatus to swap out for a winter
single speed which I think I've since ridden once in the past two months.
My reasoning was two-fold. I wanted/needed a lighter, rackless bike that
could be stored up high on a wall mounted rack in our small living space
and to rotate to get some miles on one of my otherwise neglected projects.

The winter single speed was originally conceived as a poor man's Hilsen
and/or Quickbeam. It's a tall 27" seat-tubed '83 Schwinn Traveler I found
at a local co-op as a bare frame. I initially thought I'd build it up to
replace another old geared roadbike ('87 Schwinn Traveler) that bit the
dust. I then realized this one had no derailer hanger and required a bolt
on hanger. In the interim I built it with existing parts as a single
speeder and after a few brief iterations it now sports chocomoose bars I
originally tried on the Clem H before a Jones H-bar conversion.

All of this is relevant in the sense that this Schwinn is under
consideration for similar usage to your Saluki... I'm thinking as temporary
front loaded baby hauler in the early spring with an eventual conversion to
a rear child seat that does not otherwise fit the Clem H (seatstay
interference.) I have not yet tried this one with either baby seat. It is
certainly less stout than the Clem H and I anticipate it will fit/feel
different but by how much it's hard to say so I know I'll just need to give
it a try over the next few months.

Financially, I'm in no position for any other bike acquisitions to fit this
need (baby hauler that will work transitionally with both, our front and
rear, child seats) while doubling as an all-rounder with the seats easily
removed. Although I've considered selling some of my others, the
time/logistics of just trying to do so along with the sunk costs Patrick
already alluded to has made me hesitate as long as I still have some
available offsite storage. I know I'd regret selling the 65cm Clem H...
and with few in existence in this size not likely easily replaceable
(except maybe with a Gus Boots-Willsen, though by the time I'm in a
position to replace a sold Clem, an XL GBW may not even be easily
obtainable?)

My other bikes are also of little to no value except one other that should
have some value (Waterford made Milwaukee single speed) but is a long term
rebuild project I'd absolutely regret bailing out on at this point even
though I haven't had much time for it.

With all that said, I guess my point is: I'd give it a try before taking
any other drastic measures. I've had similar thoughts and came up with my
own two or three bike stable concept but have yet to execute and realized I
truthfully don't need much more than any of my existing bikes currently
offer and by the time I finalize any bike line-up changes my needs may very
well change by that point as well.

I may console myself by replacing Kiley's SKS fenders with hand beaten

SKS's) only during summer monsoon and winter snow. If I'm reasonable, I

Re: [RBW] Thoughts: Downsizing the bike stable and dual-purposing bikes

2019-01-29 Thread Patrick Moore
Agree; try and see. 6 months is not a long time, anyway.

As for selling bikes or other things not presently used, I've done that and
looked down a year or 2 later to see that I was kicking myself for doing
so, and therefore had to spend more $ to get something similar back. I've
repeated this "sell and kick and spend" cycle many more times than I should
have.

I agree that you should add to the bike you like riding most any device
that will let you ride it more. My 2003 Road custom gofast hung on the wall
because most of my riding was commuting and I commuted on beaters. I took
the '03 to a local builder who turned it into a fixed gear commuter, and it
got ridden more than any other bike thereafter.

"Extra" bikes are sunk costs and require only inventory carrying expenses,
which are usually small. Store 'em up, and if 2 years later you have no
desire to ride them, sell at that point.

Re: [RBW] Re: Teach me about sealant in tubes?

2019-01-29 Thread Patrick Moore
+1 on full tubeless, for fat and soft, but I'm not convinced that for at
least supple tires, tubeless is better than tubed, and there's some support
for this position.

I did however get sealant into many prestas without removable cores; just
remove them anyway and pinch tube to keep them from disappearing into the
abyss of the tube (even if that happens, not hard to get cores back in
place).

Someone on CR list uses large veterinarian syringes for his sealant;
sealant itself heals the hole. I've not tried this. Now of course I buy
removable cores, but I had a stash of old tubes.

I've got a set of Compass tires that I'd like to ride, but it seems
they always have a slow leak from a small puncture. From what I gather,
sealant in the tubes may help combat that.

Specific questions are: which sealant do you use? Which tubes do you
pair it with? With a tube with a removable valve core, do I need to do
anything specific to get it in, or just up end the bottle? How much do you
 put in in a go?

Thanks for any willing to share their knowledge. I appreciate the brain

Re: [RBW] Re: Teach me about sealant in tubes?

2019-01-29 Thread Patrick Moore
I'll add: OS seems to last longer in tubes than Stan's. OS seems to last as
long as in the bottle; Stan's has turned into boogers after a year or 18
months. But both dry up in very thin-casing tubeless tires, at least around
here in high desert ABQ and I have to replenish, in summer, every 3 months
or so. Have been dragging my feet in opening up the tires, removing any
dried stuff (OS leaves film, Stan's leaves boogers) and replacing OS
Regular with OS "Endurance" (thanks, Joe) which is said to last longer than
regular, but doesn't seal quite as well. I'll report when I do this. Right
now, with winter temps, I'm pushing my luck with leaving the old stuff in
for the 4th month. So far, luck has held.

no?

sealant? I could not get OS to work with 2" tubes in F Freds at 25 psi and
lower; no good at all, so I went to tubeless.

Re: [RBW] Teach me about sealant in tubes?

2019-01-29 Thread Patrick Moore
If the pressures are high enough, both Stan's and Orange Seal work very
well in tubes, OS better than Stan's. I found that neither sealant worked
in low pressure tubes (sub 30 psi).

I use the smallest and lightest tubes I can find; 26 X 1" tubes or 650C X
23 in tires up to 32 mm with sealant. Works fine.

Example of benefit: Several years ago I swapped out my 700C X 35 mm (actual
width 31-2 mm) Kojaks for the original Parigi Roubaix clinchers. I had been
riding the Kojaks sans sealant and averaged perhaps a flat ever 2 rides of
20 miles or so -- no problem, used to it, just bought lots of patches.
Switched to the PR -- nicer ride! Got 5 flats within first 10 miles; used
up -- forget; at least 25 and perhaps even more -- patches that week.
Bought Stan's, put in tubes, and the clouds opened and angels sang. Later
found that OS was even better.

Now use 175 gram (actual on last one measured) 559 X 32 Elk Pass tires --
lighter and more supple than the PR -- with OS in 60 gram (claimed) SV 11
tubes in our goatheads, both pavement and firm dirt. Angels still singing.

[RBW] Thoughts: Downsizing the bike stable and dual-purposing bikes

2019-01-29 Thread Justin, Oakland
Hi folks,
In my past year-plus at home as a dad I've enjoyed some riding with my
daughter on our bike - a 199x Trek 930 (lugged, 1 1/8" threaded fork). It's
been amazing. I haven't however been able to ride as much as I'd like on my
Saluki, my Trek 710 or my Salsa El Mariachi.

As the Saluki holds the largest place in my heart and is the least
replaceable bike I'm wondering about moving the currently front mounted
kid-seat to the Saluki, knowing she'll move to the rear in the next 6
months to a year. The concern/worry is that the 930 is so stout that I
can't tell she's there, aside from her cute little helmeted head being at
perfect height for a mid ride smooch. Would the Saluki offer a similar
stout/secure/stable experience? For reference I would be moving the whole
"cockpit" of Bosco bars and the like over to the Saluki and getting a CrMo
stem of some sort.

Any thoughts? Would I get a wagging feeling while riding?

Ideally I would own 3 bikes - MTB, Town/Commute/Kid, Roadie.

Thanks!
-J

[RBW] Re: Teach me about sealant in tubes?

2019-01-29 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Tubes have to be built with removable valve cores from the start. You can't
swap them out, as it's the entire valve that is different. It's hit or miss
at a LBS when you're trying to find them, so check first.

I've run Stan's in tubes before, and have had marginal success. Maybe 75%
of the punctures (all goathead) sealed. But that means the other 25%
didn't, and that's a problem. You can't field-repair a tube with sealant in
it, as the patch won't adhere to the tube. You can patch it back at home if
you get it clean enough, but it could still be a problem. YMMV of course.

Full tubeless is the way to go. Save your pennies and get a wheelset built
up. I am mostly converted over, and honestly don't ride the bikes that are
not set up tubeless anymore.

Both, I've removed them from other tubes and bought them at the bike shop.
I'll also add on to the negative experience with Schwalbe Extra Light
tubes, I've had four split at the seam at typical pressures in Compass
26x54 tires. At least they had removable cores...

[RBW] Re: Teach me about sealant in tubes?

I have used sealant in tubes for 6-8 months. I use standard Stan's sealant
in Schwalbe tubes for 26x54 and 650bx42 tires and have not had a flat I had
to stop and deal with since starting. The tubes have removable cores, which
I remove and then use the Stan's injector to add 2-3oz. I think I topped
them off once before a tour as a precaution.

I've been using sealant with Compass standard and various Schwalbe,
including the Liteskin casing which is very thin. I think it's been pretty
effective.

I've noticed that the sealant is still very much liquid when handling the
tube while changing tires, so longevity hasn't been an issue for me. I have
had to swap valve cores on one set of tubes when pumping started taking a
little too much effort.

I love both the bags that have been suggested. For your purposes, I donā€™t

[RBW] Re: Teach me about sealant in tubes?

2019-01-29 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Brett,
I use Orange Seal in tubes (butyl and latex) with Compass 584x38 and 584x42
(regular, not EL casing).

I think it helps, but my frequency of flats was low before sealant. My
rides are generally commutes, and getting a flat can be an expensive
nuisance if I'm late for child pickup.

For set up, I install tube+tire and air it up (without sealant). If it
looks good, then I deflate the tube and remove the valve core. (BTW: Park
chain tool, probably others, can be used to remove the valve core; the
"arms" are the right distance to engage the flats of the core.)

With valve ~4 o'clock position (and tire off the ground), I inject ~4 oz of
Orange Seal. I could probably get away with less sealant, but... half of 8
is 4 and I figured that if I stored the bottle, the remaining sealant would
probably dry out. (My LBS didn't have the 4oz size.)

Next, reinstall the core and air it up. I recently read someone advising
adding Boeshield or similar to the core before installation (to prevent
clogging). Maybe I'll try that next time. I can't say that it's been much
of a problem for me, though.

Good luck!

[RBW] Teach me about sealant in tubes?

2019-01-29 Thread Brett Callahan
Friends, I know it has been discussed here before, but I'm awful with the
Google Groups search function. Would anyone be willing to share about their
experience using Stan's or Orange Seal in tubes?

I've got a set of Compass tires that I'd like to ride, but it seems they
always have a slow leak from a small puncture. From what I gather, sealant
in the tubes may help combat that.

Specific questions are: which sealant do you use? Which tubes do you pair
it with? With a tube with a removable valve core, do I need to do anything
specific to get it in, or just up end the bottle? How much do you put in in
a go?

Thanks for any willing to share their knowledge. I appreciate the brain
trust that is this group.

[RBW] Oddities that make the ride home extra-adventurous

2019-01-29 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I wouldnā€™t necessarily say it was extra-adventurous considering the following
rides mentioned werenā€™t exactly adventurous to begin with but twice
(correction: thrice!) Iā€™ve had cranks work themselves loose from bottom bracket
spindles.. First was on a shakedown ride after some parts swapping along a
frequent 6-ish mile loop in a local park and MUP system and I simply neglected
to fully torque the bolts on the square taper cranks and was too eager to get
some miles in. NDS came loose about halfway and forgot my mini hex wrenches
which I usually keep in a small tool kit. Tried to tighten with an
appropriately shaped rock but couldnā€™t get enough leverage no matter how I
tried. Return trip was essentially a one legged effort and fortunately on
relatively flat terrain. 2nd time was a cottered crank where the nut on the
old cotter worked itself loose on a Raleigh Sports. This was in the early half
of a planned summer leisure ride to get some dinner. The nut was never to be
seen again and we doubled back to load the bikes in the car and drive instead.

More recently I did a square taper conversion of a Raleigh frame using Raleigh
cups and Italian spec square taper spindle. Used NDS road crank appeared to
get too close to the adjustable cup after a recent retorque and catch the flats
to cause the cup to loosen and begin to push the crank off the spindle.
