Re: [RBW] Model/Size Recommendations for PBH 82ish -- In between sizes

2019-02-20 Thread jamison brosseau
I ride a 59 Clem l and have an 89 PBH. The seatpost looks fine. I think a 52
Clem would be perfect for you if your PBH is 82. The amount of seat post
showing would be fine. I really think a 59 would be too big for you.

Re: [RBW] Off Topic: Questions about MacBook Pro, external monitor, heat, and screen burn-in

2019-02-20 Thread Peter White
Curiously, my Mac Pro, the little grey cylinder version, recently started
acting up. Both video and audio get choppy. Only fix is to reboot. I did
find two bits of software that have helped. "Macs Fan Control" monitors
internal temperatures and adjusts the fan speed. "DriveDX" monitors drive
temperatures and spits out a report of drive condition. I still get the
problem but instead of having to reboot daily it's now every three days or
so. I did a partial strip down and cleaning of the computer two weeks ago,
clearing out a lot of dust. Next weekend I'll do a more thorough strip down
and cleaning.

I suspect that unless the computer is kept in one of those "clean rooms"
they make computer chips in, you're going to get dust inside, and that dust
is going to prevent adequate cooling of the system.

[RBW] Re: Off Topic: Questions about MacBook Pro, external monitor, heat, and screen burn-in

2019-02-20 Thread REC (Roberta)
I don't know about macs, just PCs. I use my laptop PC similarly and had
similar issues. Notes are from my head, not looking directly at my
machine.

I propped up the entire machine, at least an inch, on all four corners, on
a hard surface, with nothing around it that would impede airflow. The more
airfow, the better. Clean, or get cleaned, the insides. I'd bet this is
the issue, since you recently got a new pooch. On my PC, I got into the
display setup area and chose presentation option. Then in the power mode,
I changed the internal monitor to never display and for the hard drive to
never go off. If you don't have that, how about turning the screen
brightness down as low as possible and open the lid as little as possible.

I'll be in town tomorrow and can stop by the Apple store and ask them. The
geniuses there are usually very knowledgeable .

Re: [RBW] Off Topic: Questions about MacBook Pro, external monitor, heat, and screen burn-in

2019-02-20 Thread Bill Schairer
I am not an expert but here are my thoughts:
1. You are kind of pushing the computer beyond its expected life, especially
the hard drive
2. My sister recently was having issues with her Mac laptop and had the
battery replaced, which seemed to address her problems. I have no idea whether
an aging battery can affect performance even when the computer is plugged in.
3. I was having similar issues with my aging iMac. Rather than buy a new
computer, I took it in, had it cleaned, replaced the hard drive with a solid
state drive and doubled the memory. It was about half the cost of new computer
and I figured if I got another 2 or 3 years out of it it would be worth the
cost. It was like a brand new computer when I got it back. I think I am right
about at that 2 or 3 year mark and it is starting to act up again. I’ll
continue to push it for a while yet but am recognizing the moment of truth is
not too far off.
4. The latest and greatest OS and software are designed around the latest and
greatest hardware. Even if they can be run with the older hardware,
performance will probably suffer. This is based strictly upon experience and
not any technical knowledge.
5. For whatever it is worth, Word was and is the software that is most
problematic for me and I am not a heavy Word user. Everytime I open it up, I
regret it wishing I had opened the document on my ipad instead. The guys who
serviced my Mac (authorized service rep) told me that Word is an
extraordinarily heavy app. It is complete overkill for me but sounds like a
necessity for you. Seems that could be deciding factor between service or new.

Doug, those sound like some excellent trips - next time! Biking the 1 to
Big Sur, which is such beautiful drive, would be at the top of my list.

I didn't get out to Walnut Creek as it was a 4 day turnaround with 3 days
on the bike, but I've been before and it's everything I'd hoped it would
be. I really want to ride the Gus tho and was hoping I could then. But,
on the other hand, I was just out on the very very muddy trails around
Prospect Park yesterday (some mud had thawed in the sunlight, others frozen
in deep ridges fun to navigate) and I was on my Cheviot with Compass
Stielacooms...it was SO fun. My point being, I have enough Gus in my
Cheviot to get me around.

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-02-20 Thread ascpgh
Important difference here, a GPS is direct satellite navigation. Any smartphone
app is triangulation beteween cellular provider towers which are line of sight.

Cell phone based navigation is great if you are in such fortunate locations to
be with service bars enough to keep that connection. GPS is more robust when
you leave the areas of cell tower coverage, be that by distance into sparse
population areas, away from interstates or into terrain so up and down that
cell service “shadows” break coverage.

Know that GPS is somewhat line of sight as well, they are susceptible to signal
degradation by heavy overhead foliage (springtime when leaves are pulpy and
growing fast or wet from recent dew, rain) and atmospheric phenomenon between
you on the ground and the satellites. The scene in Lone Survivor when Lt. Mike
Murphy leaves cover to go out on an open rock area to make the satellite phone
call for help demonstrated the same problem. These signal degradations always
seem to coincide with the moments you usually have the greatest need for
navigation or location advice.

If you really want to maintain navigational awareness you may have to keep
cellular or GPS based device information backed up with real map. Reporters
here represent each of these ways to navigate, Patrick says he uses several
(for contingency) which I practice myself. Many places I ride haven’t enough
cellular coverage to provide continuous information. Don’t put your eggs in one
basket as the consequences increase. Missing a turn in your own town is one
thing but losing your way when circumstances have become more critical is
another.

I navigate the GAP trail by cyclometer using a crude set of mileage cues and
related locations I tape to my water bottle. I am continuously aware of where I
am along my travels, even in the dark zones to both cellular service and
satellite by obscured overhead radio visibility. The trail is an unmistakable
linear feature across a map(s). At those incremental trailheads or landmarks I
can find support needs or services from a map or by phone as coverage usually
exists at those locations. I don’t need to be running either my phone or a GPS
for my continuous location that way. It even shows on Google maps so I don’t
need much more complexity or paid services for accurate location
identification.

Hey Andy, iPhones (and I believe most smartphones now?) have had satelite GPS
that works great even where there is no mobile signal for quite a few years
now. As with all GPS, it works best with clear view of the sky, as it also uses
triangulation to get greater precision, so canyons, dense forest, deep valleys,
and other geographies can monkey with it.

This entirely depends on the accuracy of the map, be in paper or digital. Both

P.S. Just checked, and my Elemnt already has maps of North American and Europe
installed. If I wanted to go to South America, I would need to remove one of
those and install a new map. But for 100% of the cycling I plan to do in the
next few years, I’m covered.

Re: [RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-02-20 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
I have an Element. I think it's a *great *bike GPS computer, but navigation
off piste is not it's strong point, at all. If you're planning your route
ahead of time (with ridewithGPS), it'll be perfect. But if you're trying to
wayfind in a remote location, you're going to be SOL. There's no topo info,
you can't pan/scan in the device, you can't add new routes without a
companion phone with internet access. In short, improvisation on mtb trails
or off pavement is hard. The Element displays some, but not all mtb/hiking
trails.

When I'm on riding in a remote area, I use the Element in conjunction with
a companion map app on my phone where I can download maps ahead of time,
like google maps, MotionX GPS, or Avenza. These apps will place your
location on your choice of style of map. Having both devices is really
important if you need to improvise.

Re: [RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-02-20 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Totally agree with the mapping issues, although I ride exclusively on roads and
well-defined off-street bike paths.

However, requiring a smartphone for mapping could be viewed as a feature, not a
bug. Yes, I have to stop and haul out my phone to map a route to a new
destination, but in my experience it’s much easier than using the menus in a
Garmin.

Downside is that you can’t edit the route—ask to find such-and-such a location,
and it will find what it thinks is the best route. Input that route and divert
from it, and the Elemnt won’t adjust to keep you heading toward the
destination.

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-02-20 Thread Ed Carolipio
My experience with a dedicated GPS (Garmin 810, Garmin GPSMAP 62) for
biking is they're great for recording your ride and for finding out where
you are, but are poor in terms of dynamic routing and way finding, even
with screens and stored map info. (The 810 assumes I'm a car, and routes me
as one...) I'd always augment the GPS with "something else" like Google
Maps or ridewithgps.com as other people have noted. I especially like
Deacon's approach with paper/weatherproof maps for trailblazing in the
wilderness, which I'd couple with paper, sharpie, and a handlebar clip to
create route sheets on the fly for trail markers and turnoffs. In the city,
I take the time to stop and use a smartphone to do the routing, and
sometimes use Google Streetview to check if a route is too sketchy for a
bike or if there are pedestrian shortcuts available since, as I said, all
that dynamic routing software assumes I'm a car.

For the kind of riding you're planning to do, I'd recommend a Garmin
handheld used for hiking like the eTrex 20 (for something elegant) or the
GPSMAP 64 (for something that's absolutely bulletproof) coupled with a RAM
mount (https://www.rammount.com/). (H/T Vikapproved -
https://vikapproved.wordpress.com/2013/11/04/garmin-etrex-20-review/) These
can work as bike computers with the mount, and are useful on a hike as
well. Both have displays that give you a rough idea of where you are
relative to trails so you can find your "solved" location on a larger paper
map.

A note on digital maps: I'm not familiar with Wahoo, but stock maps on
Garmin's hikers are normally low resolution. Map resolution isn't so
important for road maps but extremely so for topography maps. (In the city,
most navigation algorithms assume you're going to be on a road.) Garmin
does have higher resolution maps
(https://www.garmin.com/en-US/maps/outdoor) for a price beyond the unit -
kinda cheesy but people recommend to budget for both the unit and the topo
map of the region you're interested in when shopping. If the extra cost of
topo maps is an issue, there are open source topo maps available for
download onto the Garmins - see https://www.gpsfiledepot.com/ - but that
requires a bit of work and experimentation to get up and running. For road
maps on the 810, I use an OpenStreetsMap - http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
- of my region.

On uploading your rides, for Garmin they have a free site called "Garmin
Connect" which can be linked to other sites
(https://connect.garmin.com/en-US/) to record and analyze your rides. I
upload the rides from my 810 to my Garmin Connect account, then the Garmin
Connect pushes those out to my Strava and ridewithgps.com accounts
automagically. The upload can be done via a USB cable on the computer and a
web browser; alternatively, for models with Bluetooth, that can be done by
syncing through an app on a smartphone which happens automatically when the
unit connects to the phone and the phone has a connection to the internet.
