I just saw they also have Brifters and some options for 2x and 8 speed!
They say the derailleurs are only compatible with Advent shifters so
there's some lock-in there...

[RBW] My first Rivendell!

2019-02-21 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
“So much of it doesn't make sense.”

Wait till you get to the next thought. “Wait. This is what makes sense. It’s
everything I’ve been daft enough to believe unquestioningly that doesn’t make
sense.”

Then the thought after that. “Whoa. Um ... what else am I unwittingly believing
without truely paying attention?”

Grin.

That was me when I discovered going barefoot. It led, nearly simultaniously, to
nose breathing, floor living and highfat ketogenic diet. Eventually it led to
Grant and my bicycling revolution began. It’s also led to homeopathic medicine
and other things. What an amazing ride.

With abandon,

2019-02-21 Thread OwenS
Oh I definitely meant 'cheap' in the pure sense of cost only. Very cheap
when you compare the Altus derailleur with my previous bike's SRAM Shadow
clutch derailleur. Did the SRAM change gears any better? *Nope.* Did it
costs like 8 x the price?
*Yep. *

I'm kinda pissed that the general bike industry has drip fed me information
around which components I needed as a 'serious cyclist'. I think the whole
Shimano/SRAM hierarchy of components is almost total garbage. Categorize
components in terms of weight or use-case, not some imaginary metric of
'betterness'.
*"Oh no don't get the Altus, the Claris is much better. But not as good as
Tiagra. What you really need is 105". *

I feel free in so may ways now. I wish I could thank Grant directly but I
have no idea how to get in contact with him.

[RBW] Re: Bosco bars grip suggestions

2019-02-21 Thread Ash
I'm a Bosco handlebar fanatic. Have them on two bikes currently. (I have
also tried all 3 sizes)

Before moving to Bosco I had settled on Ergon GC touring (the flatish kind)
cork grips.
I found them pretty uncomfortable with Boscos. Round grips work better for
some reason. Now I have the round rubber Ergons. They might be called
GA2. They have clamps, so easy to install/remove.

Oury grips worked fine too. I like round ergons slightly better.

[RBW] Re: Bosco bars grip suggestions

2019-02-21 Thread Ed Carolipio
I started with a single layer cloth tape before going on a grip journey::

   - Rivbike Dutch paddle - too small for my hands
   - Cylindrical MTB grip with a lock-on screw, like the Lizard Skins
    - this one worked well too, but a
bit short lenghtwise to cover the generous grip area on the Boscoes
   - ESI Chunkys Extra Long size - a little too thick for my hands,
   difficult to take off/on
   - ODI Longneck Grips in superlong size - really like the length for
variety in hand position but a bit squirmy when stand-up pedaling

Next step on my grip journey is the superlong Kraton grips from Jones bikes
, which would be firmer
than the ODI ones while preserving the front-to-back variety in hand
positions. I think the "Riv padded cloth tape grip" would be a good option
but I don't have firsthand experience to comment.

shellac. Just wrap, use twine to finish the end, and you’re all set.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadini handlebar ideas

2019-02-21 Thread John McBurney
I have Nitto bullhorns on my Bombadil. I’ve done a lot of road biking with
drops and mountain biking with minimally swept back flat bars. I’d never
ridden a swept back bar of any sort except for a test ride.

It took a few minutes to adjust to the bullhorn bars but especially when
combined with the Brooks B67 saddle it’s just a lovely relaxed position. I
like it. I still like the position on my race bike but I totally get where
the upright position works especially with a wider sprung saddle like the
B67.

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-02-21 Thread ascpgh
It’s not clear how fully functioning the included GPS of new smartphones is.
I’ve read discussions about the co-operation with cellular internet for the
route information and detail greater than latitude longitude definition.

I’ve been left of undefined location by electronic means in a few too dire of
moments to rely solely on them. The “canopy” of foliage or atmospheric moisture
degrading signals is a risk to me, so I keep a map and compass with me.

[RBW] Re: Roadini handlebar ideas

2019-02-21 Thread Chip Martens

Has anyone else tried this method from Dan Stroud ( @hobocross on Instagram
) — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGokAt6XAi0

I didn't love the Salsa bars I had on my Wolverine and was looking for
something more comfortable. I built WhatBars.com to help me figure out this
problem, but it was only when Dan posted that video that I decided to go
with the Soma Oxfords ( similar to the Albatross bars ).

I personally always found myself riding in the hoods or on the flats, but
never truly being comfortable, especially at slower speeds, and switching
my Wolverine up to this setup with the brake levers / grips as instructed
has made a huge difference. In the "hoods" position, I still feel like I
can "tuck down" if I'm trying to ride more swiftly.

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-02-21 Thread aeroperf
We did a cycling tour in Puglia, Italy (heel of Italy's "boot") with these
guys: www.pugliacycletours.com
They handed us a Garmin unit with pre-programmed routes through the Itria
valley to bike along.

Showed a map without internet
Located current actual location
Showed trails as well as paved roads
Did NOT show elevation
No larger than a smartphone
Charged via USB

It provided us with pre-ridden routes. All we had to do was follow the
pointer on the displayed blue route. It displayed a flag if we went
"off-route".

Others may know better if this matches up with "Elements", but I'll check
with them to find out what it was if it sounds like what you want.
I'm used to following paper maps attached to the handlebars, so I was
impressed.

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-02-21 Thread tuolumne bikes
The cheapskate way can have additional advantages, depending on your needs.
A cheap Android cell phone with an app like Backcountry Navigator or some
of the other apps previously mentioned will be much cheaper than a
dedicated handheld or bike GPS. It will usually have a much bigger
touchscreen with better user interface and USB charging. The GPS works
without cell service, but navigation like Google Maps needs cell data or
wifi.

If you carry a cell phone already, consider a (small) second phone for
extended trip use of GPS. The "GPS phone" doesn't need a cell account--just
connect it via wifi at home to set up the app and download maps, and keep
it in airplane mode (with GPS on) when out in the field. The GPS function
doesn't drain the phone battery much--it's usually the constant search for
cell signal that kills your battery, so the "GPS phone" will usually keep
working long after your regular cell is dead. With a USB block battery, you
can have GPS for a pretty long trip in the boonies.

I use Backcountry Navigator Pro out in the Nationall Forest. It does
everything a handheld does except turn by turn navigation and has detailed
maps available for download. Caltopo maps are excellent USGS topos for the
USA, and there are other providers for most of the rest of the world. Some
of the fancier maps require a subscription, and the app cost about $10 when
I bought it years ago. Always carry a paper map also.

[RBW] MicroShift’s New $125 drivetrain

2019-02-21 Thread Jeremy Till
Interesting. I may have to try it out on my CleMTB (I had been thinking about
replacing the shifter anyways). Price point aside, this is the first 9spd rear
derailleur that I'm aware of with a clutch. Are there any others? I wonder if
the cable pull ratios are compatible with Shimano stuff.

[RBW] Re: MicroShift’s New $125 drivetrain

2019-02-21 Thread Justin, Oakland
This looks like the type of thing I would hope Riv would spec on the Boots
if possible. Simple, low-cost and low maintenance without sacrificing some
modern amenities like clutches and big cassettes. For the type of riding
these big cassettes are mostly oriented to (MTB) I don't see bigger jumps
being a huge deal.

Here’s an idea. How about giving everyone a limit—24 or 36 frames. Shoot just
that and post your best pics. I enjoy the discipline of shooting film, since it
requires that you think much more carefully about what you take.

I’ve just started processing at home, so it’s just BW right now. Mattias

get proficient with BW I’ll give it a try.

Re: [RBW] NAHBS film photo challenge

2019-02-21 Thread David Bivins
I wish I could join you all! I'm a big film photography enthusiast.

To your point about color, Philip, CineStill began marketing a
purpose-built temperature controller that's based on a sous vide
device, the TCS-1000. I've successfully developed color film at home
in the kitchen sink by judiciously monitoring the tap water, but this
new device, which is about $100 (cheaper than a sous vide device), is
pretty brilliant. I was gifted one at Christmas but haven't used it
yet.

Take care,

David

My local photo store (Jeremiah's Photo Corner*) has started classes for
home developing color. Apparently the trick is to use a sous vide cooking
controller to maintain temps.
If you're interested, it might be worth a stay at the Astro Motel

[RBW] WTB: Albatross Bars, Mark's Rack, Silver Bar End Shifters

2019-02-21 Thread sameness
[X-Post > iBOB]

Hi all, some random WTB items I'm after...

- Nitto Albatross (B352AA), the heat-treated aluminum version
- Nitto Mark's Rack (M1), the front rack with provisions for two struts
- RBW/Silver Bar End Shifters,
these:
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/shifting/products/silver-shifters-bar-end-kit-17089

If for some reason you happen to have just the Silver Bar End Shifter
Mounts
(these:
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/shifting/products/silver-bar-end-shifter-pods-mounts-pair-17068),

I'd be interested in those as well.

Note this is for a budget-ish build, so (lower) price is more important
than (cosmetic) condition.

Let me know what you've got and your asking price including shipping to ZIP
90064? Contact off-list via PM or email, which is my username at G Mail,
please and thanks!

I recommend you join the Mac Observer chat room and post the question, I've
seen it surface there often. Also search the Mac Geek Gab podcast archive,
I know it's been discussed many times there. If your a hands on guy you can
open it up blow out the fans and if you want re-apply thermal paste to the

Been repair laptops for years and the 2014 isn't bad for access compared to
