[RBW] Re: Balance Bikes for Bouncing Babies

2019-03-10 Thread Andrew Patteson
Hi Justin,

My kid ended up with a great one from TykesBykes (later called Stampede),
but the website Two Wheeling Tots has tons of info and was a huge help for
me in choosing. No affiliation.

IIRC my son was 2 1/2 when we got him the balance bike and was riding a
pedal bike like a champ right after turning 4.

I wanted real tires, not foam. I liked the idea of the hand brake, though
they likely won't use it for a while.

Exciting times!

Best wishes,
Andrew P. in SLC, UT

[RBW] Balance Bikes for Bouncing Babies

2019-03-10 Thread Justin August
Hey folks-
I want to look at a balance bike for my daughter. Lots of choices out there and
want to get one that can grow with her for a reasonably long amount of time.
It’d be nice to be able to have the same bike transition with her to be able to
ride a bit on the dirt since we have great flat-ish areas in the dirt to
practice here.

Any thoughts on brands or models?
How old were they and how long had your kid been walking before going to a
balance bike?
Any tips?

[RBW] Re: railbiking video

2019-03-10 Thread lconley
I am going to build a Rosco Baby Rail Bike. I ordered a 52 Rosco Baby, not
exactly sure what I was going to do with it, but the concept of a long
step-through frame sounded great to me as I am short legged and have a long
torso as well as being over weight. A railbike needs to be a step-through
because the ground where you put your feet is seven inches below the bottom
of the tires. The Rosco Baby should be perfect for this especially with the
added distance between the head tube and the seat tube when mounting and
demounting. I ordered a set of rail bike plans from a gentleman named
Bentley (he has been evolving the design for 50 years) and am gathering
parts. I dropped the plans off with a friend of mine from the cycling club
who happens to be a cabinet maker to cut out the wooden parts of the rail
bike from the proper type of hardwood. The outrigger detaches with pins and
folds up. I also have a Medium Mountain Mixte, Clementine, and Betty Foy -
but I think the extra length of the Roscoe Baby makes it the choice for a
Rail Bike.

[RBW] Re: Question on matching rim - tire width

2019-03-10 Thread aeroperf

The best explanation I've seen on this is from Sheldon Brown.

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

"If your tire is too narrow for the rim, there's an increased risk of
tire/rim damage from road hazards.

If its too wide for the rim, there's an increase risk of sidewall wear from
brake shoes, and a greater risk of loss of control in the event of a sudden
flat."

A little lower on the page he provides a "what fits what" chart, and
states: "Note: This chart may err a bit on the side of caution. Many
cyclists exceed the recommended widths with no problem"

I'm running Conti Speed Ride 42s on Atlas rims no problem.

2019-03-10 Thread David Hallerman

Hello,

As the subject line notes, the chainrings listed here are new, never
been kissed by a chain (except two, as noted). But with 54 chainring
sets or single rings for sale, that's too much to post.

So you can find info below on the top 5 compact double sets for sale,
along with a photo link of just those sets:

But more useful, here's a PDF to download that lists all 54 chainring

If you like some chainrings, tell me which numbers as well as their
name. And if you like some chainrings, but are not crazy about their
prices, talk to me. Note: all prices include free shipping in the CONUS.

Let my overbuying become your bargain.

Smiles,

Dave, /who notes that some chainrings for sale have ramps and pins, some
are flat, many are 110mm BCD or 74mm BCD, some are 130mm or 144mm BCD,
and several are being sold only as sets, such as compact double pairs or
classic triples/

Re: [RBW] Question on matching rim - tire width

2019-03-10 Thread Wilson Wilson
Wider tire on smaller rim yeilds smaller overall tire width, but increases
height. i.e. WTB Nano 700x40 on a vintage Rigada 1320 yeilds a tire width
of 30-32 depending on pressures. A narrow tire on a wide rim increases
width of tyre, but decreases height. Velocity Dyad with Conti 700x28 yeilds
32-34 in width.

[RBW] Re: Question on matching rim - tire width

2019-03-10 Thread Mark Anderson
A wider-than-recomended tire is unlikely to blow off an undamaged rim due
directly to the weight of the bike. That's not really how clinchers work.

An important part of the upper limit on width from Velocity's perspective
is that very wide tires run at high pressures can lead to rim failure,
likely in the form of cracked webs and/or sidewalls. If you are pumping up
those 50 mm tires to 90 psi, then you're probably out of spec. for the
Atlas rim. You'd also be nuts to do so for any number of other reasons.
If you're using sane pressures for your weight (what, 25-35 psi? Less? I
haven't weighed that little since I was ten...), 50s on Atlas and 45s on
the A23 are probably fine structurally. Just ride in the rain enough and
you'll wear out the brake tracks before fatigue failure wrecks the rim
anyway.

One reason to use a wider rim on your prospective AHH is that (many)
caliper brake quick releases just open the brake a certain amount relative
to the operational setting. Thus, the wider the rim, the wider the
inflated tire that can pass through the opened brakes.

[RBW] railbiking video

2019-03-10 Thread Matt D
Al, the rolling resistance has got to be very low if you use smooth tires or
metal rims. I think all you would really need is a hard rubber lip on the
inside of a wider fatbike-width rim to really do it right. There's no uphills
or downhills because the maximum grade a train can handle is 3% and no sharp
turns because trains don't like those either. Maybe a little boring but you
could go quite fast and see things no other cyclists can see. I'd imagine it's
a wonderful, relaxing experience.

It'd be nice to see a modern purpose built railbike with wider clearances and
custom rims at the same gauge as the rails and an outrigger made collapsible
and portable with S&S couplings. Maybe even one of those wheel carriers like
British cyclists used to carry a set of lightweight racing wheels and tires to
the track back in the old days, that way you could use it to get to and from
the railway too.

Hey, anyone want to put down a deposit on a Railroad Bubbe? Maybe base it on
the Clem Smith, hobos did ride the rails after all...

[RBW] Re: New BLAHG

2019-03-10 Thread Matt D
Not sure how I feel about the instrument decals, seems too twee by half in
their current form. Maybe I'd like them more if they were more understated
or placed somewhere like the underside of the seatstays where they're still
visible but less obvious. Then again, GBW is meant to be the antithesis of
ultra-serious mountain biking culture, so maybe it's a good thing.

That's a funky custom for sure. Wonder what the customer's specifications
were? The chopped lugs look pretty great, possibly even greater considering
the instability of the lug manufacturers. Maybe in a post-Long Shen world
Riv can keep the aesthetic of lugs alive to some degree with pseudo-lugs
like that made of cut tubing, like those on the Llewellyn Colossus - look
it up, neat bike. If being forced into welding the seat tube joint on the
low end means that they save enough money to pay for something more ornate
than the napkin rings up front I'm for it.

2019-03-10 Thread Ryan Mallory Fleming
That's the one posted in an earlier email I mentioned last week. That's
some crazy fillet brazing. I noticed when I got my mixte a couple of years
ago that the curvy reinforcing struts in the rear triangle were fillet
brazed to the seat stays. I know the MIT bikes are very well-made...but
man, the artistry of the customs is exquisite. When you think that Mark
Nobilette may retire soon...you could spend money on worse things. I'm glad
Grant found another source for lugs...I'd hate to see them go away

Here is a link to a new lodge (perhaps mentioned above) in Minnewaska:

Thanks to the organizers! Looking forward to meeting up!

[RBW] Re: simple question about XD2's?

2019-03-10 Thread Jeremy Till
Spacers are used on cranks where the spider arms are drilled and tapped for
inner chainring mounting but standoffs are not forged into the arms
themselves. Older Sugino triple cranks such as the AT and GT are examples
of such cranks. They are also used on "tripleized" cranks where the inner
chainring mounts to a second set of holes on the middle chainring rather
than directly to the crank.

[RBW] FS: Wahoo Kickr Snap

2019-03-10 Thread Kellie
Smart trainer, BT, ANT+ (connects with Zwift and others). Also pairs with
HR monitor and/or cadence pod. In *excellent* condition, includes mat and
front wheel stabilizer. I love it but got a spinning bike for winter days
inside, and just not using it enough. Will throw in a large monitor to
mirror on for +$75 (but don't need it, can run Zwift on phone or laptop,
just a BIGGER experience). $400
